There were rare moments that Himeko got to spend time with her family.
Ever since she moved into the dorms, she noticed how hard it was to draw herself away from school. Everywhere she went, there was something that reminded her of an assignment that needed to be done, practice that had to be completed, training that was waiting for her. Despite her relaxed personality, Himeko was practically constantly in a state of panic.
Today was one of those days. The ones where she tried to get all her work done so she could have a meal with her family and hear her younger siblings talk about their day. Himeko tried so hard. She went to bed after midnight trying to get ahead of assignments, she spent twice the time practicing and training.
Even then, it wasn't enough.
The worst part of it all was that the home she wished to go to—the family she wished to eat dinner with—wasn't this one. She wanted her Mom, Dad, her real siblings. Yuna and Hinata were ten years younger than her and their seventh birthday was approaching sooner than Himeko would like. She was a shitty sister. She really was.
Soft taps echoed throughout the black room, the only light to be found was from the glow-in-the-dark she stuck up there one night. Even then, the light barely brought her comfort. Of course it's raining, Himeko sighed, rolling onto her side and gazing blankly out the window, it always rains when I have the chance to get lost in my thoughts.
The worst part of it all…no, she harshly squeezed her eyes shut, forcing the thought from her mind, that's selfish. Don't be selfish.
A sharp beep sounded and Himeko flinched at the sudden sound. Ringing through her ears, she unlocked her phone and read the text that stained the screen. Mai was the only one who really texted her nowadays. Well, of course there were people from her class who messaged her too, but Mai was the only one who consistently spoke to her now.
You're doing it again.
Beneath the text was a picture of three dead plants. Himeko didn't dare to look to check the state of the sunflower that rested in the corner of her room.
Sorry, sending some positive vibes your way in a bit.
Her phone beeped again and she had half the mind to throw it across the room. It wasn't the person she wanted to talk to. The person she missed. The person she just wanted to be around once again.
Stop being selfish. You know his burdens, they're nothing compared to yours.
Do you want to talk? I have some blueberry muffins!
…yes pls.
The soft knock that sounded came seconds after the text. Himeko knew that Mai was standing outside her door. She probably had been since she sent the picture of her plants. The bed creaked, whimpering in pain, as Himeko got off it. Though her feet were bare, the sharp sting of the cold floor brought her nothing but comfort.
It's nice to feel something in times like these. The times where your thoughts get lost in a pit of nothingness.
A sympathetic smile was already pulling at Mai's lips when she opened the door, two steaming muffins in her hand and two bottles of chocolate milk under her arm.
"He didn't text you, did he?" was the first thing she said, slipping into the room and Himeko gently closed the door behind her. Deathly silence echoed through the hallways, only reminding her of how she wished to be home.
"Not today, no." Himeko said before plopping onto the couch, throwing her left arm over her eyes, "It's okay, though. He's busy."
Mai scoffed from beside her. Himeko didn't need eyes to know that the brown-haired girl was scrolling through her texts with Toshi. Although it was unsmart and definitely not safe, Himeko openly gave out her phone password to her friends (i.e., Mai and Toshi…and that weird girl from her history class who was always chewing on jerky…the jerky she didn't mind, the open-mouth chewing, she did).
"Himeko, dude, you're too nice." Mai's arm brushed against hers as she laid next to her, "If I were in your shoes, I would've already called him out on his behavior."
"He's busy, Mai," was all she said, dropping her arm to her side and tilting her head to clearly see the screen.
Plus, he's Might All or whatever and his life is so much more complicated than mine and I shouldn't be complaining because, hey, at least I can pass by with a mediocre life and what's there to complain about.
Another voice inside her screamed, interrupting her rant: you have trama, stupid! Those burns on your arms are from memories so bad you fucking suppressed them! Plus, well, not to mention, but you fucking died and in a legit different world!
It's not like I can tell anybody, though.
And she wasn't going to. From the moment Himeko realized she was in another world—a fictional one—she swore that this secret would remain her burden. It got too complicated if otherwise.
"Himeko," Mai started, and she turned to see Mai already looking at her, "It's okay to just tell him you miss him…I feel like that would have a really big impact on Toshinori, you know. You got to…you got to be vulnerable in friendships."
Himeko didn't want to talk about this. Not when it was almost quarter-to-three and she had to be up in a few hours.
But, Mai was right.
Groaning, she plucked the phone from her friends fingers and typed a quick message. Once she saw the message had been delivered, she didn't hesitate to chuck the metal rectangle on the beanbag that rested on the other side of the room.
Mai laughed, "You're so werid."
A small pulled at her lips and Himeko was quick to push it away.
"'M not," She stated, "Pass me my muffin, loser."
I miss you.
She hoped he missed her, too...she really, really did.
