"Good morning...what are you all doing?" Alma slowly walked down the hallway to where the other 5 girls were huddled.
"Miss Avocet isn't awake yet, and its 8:30! we all slept in, she didn't wake us!" Roisin Gannet approached Alma the 17 year old was much taller and stronger than Alma, but was quite gentle when she hugged Alma, something that Roisin seemed to do to everyone. "My brother taught me that everyone needs a hug at least once a day!" Roisin would say. Alma didnt mind though, The Gannet was always warm and smelled of fresh sea, and she truly gave the best hugs.
"What should we do? we never entered her quarters without permisson before!" Rose Glassbill softly whispered, examining the oak door.
"We could just all go in quickly, bombard her? she wouldn't ground all of us... right?" Millcent Thrush Approached both Alma and Roisin, Alice Treecreeper not far behind.
" I say we wait, did you guys make sure she wasn't downstairs?" Alice glanced up to Roisin who simply shook her head. "Shes not anywhere."
"Wait, theres only 5 of us here, where is Isabelle?" Millie turned to Alma, isabelles roomate.
"What do you think? She's still sleeping of course! you really thought she would get up if she didnt have too?" Alma smiled.
"Yes, she would!" Isabelle tackled Alma from behind, Swinging her around. The peregrine let out a slight yelp, terrfied, but quickly figured out what was going on as her feet gently landed on the floor.
"Isabelle!!!" Alma Whsiper shouted at the taller 16 year old girl who just simply giggled in return as she ran her fingers through her silver hair, attempting to tame it.
"What...whats going on out here?" A weak older females voice chorused from down the hallway.
"Miss Avocet?" Alma glanced over the woman before them, using the wall to make sure she didnt fall. Her black hair was askew from its typical Black bun, and her dress was clearly not as pristine as usual. The Avocet also wasnt wearing much of any makeup either except some simple face powder, but that didn't do much to hide the paleness that glowed through it.
"Are you Good?" Isabelle Broke the suffocating silence after around 30 seconds.
"Yes im fine. please get ready for your classes and breakfast. My sincerest apologies for letting you all sleep in so late. that was not my intent and I apologize for delaying the start to your day." Miss Avocet slowly departed down the stairs, leaving the girls all standing dumbstruck in the hallway.
"Rose, you know how you said you would let me play with your hair when the dead rise and walk amongst the living? Take your hair out of those braids and be ready for me at Lunch break, I have a few styles im gonna try!" Isabelle mumbled, only to be hit playfully by Rose as Everyone burst out laughing except Alma who just stared at where Miss Avocet was standing, getting lost in her own mind as everyone else left.
"Alma? are you going to get dressed or attend class in your Nightgown? lets go!!" Isabelle grabbed Alma's hand, jolting her out of her daze.
"Oh, yeah lets go." Alma departed down the hall and into their room, getting ready for the day.
"Turn to page 57 in your books girls." Miss Avocet annouced with a hoarse voice, but kept her composure Alma turned to the page, but kept a close eye on miss Avocet.
"Who can tell me What we are studying?" She asked. Miss Avocets fingers anxiously strummed on her thigh,
"Your the teacher, why don't you tell us?" jack asked. Alma shot him a dirty look, to which he just smirked at her,
"well, sense you seem to enjoy being a smart Alec, Why Don't you tell us Jack? Miss Avocet Glared. Alma turned her head as her brother rolled his eyes, rather agitated.
"I dont know, your the teacher." Jack answered nonchalantly.
"well, sense you cant give me an answer, you will have the pleasure of learning it as you copy page 57 onto the board 5 times after class." Miss Avocet leaned back in her chair, Adjusting her bun as Jack looked shocked. Alma couldnt help but laugh a little, but stopped as Miss Avocet started coughing into her elbow quite harshly, but it didnt phase the woman as she continued on with her lecture.
"Miss Avocet, can you please Help me with this question?" Alma asked after the lecture during the independent work time.
"Of course dear." The Avocet stood up, making her way over, a little unsteady on her own feet as she made it to Her youngest students desk.
"What..what number is that?" Miss Avocet asked as her vision blurred over, but didn't hear a response to her question as everything slowly faded.
"Miss?" The Peregrine frowned slightly, but felt her body tighten as Miss Avocet collapsed to the ground without another word, bashing her head on the empty desk next to Alma.
Alma Couldn't much hear the screams of her fellow sisters as she sat frozen. It didnt even feel real in the slightest, not until Roisin screamed at Alma to run and grab the first aid kit as she got down beside Miss Avocet, gently shaking the feverish woman.
Even with a limp, Alma ran faster than an Olympian, almost falling down the stairs. after tearing apart the hall closet to find an the first aid kit, she rushed back to the classroom, dropping the first aid kit. Many of the girls were sobbing hysterically, all except Roisin and Rose, who both were trying to hold Miss Avocet still as she jerked around randomly as blood had started to pool around her from the Gash she had acquired on her head.
"Alma! first aid!!!" Rose shouted, ushering her over. even she was getting teary eyed, and she was quite the stoic young lady. Alma collected the first aid contents from the ground and brought them down to Roisin, who quickly started to try to put and end the bleeding from Miss Avocet's forehead.
"Someone needs to send a,messenger pigeon to Miss Bunting at the council striaght away!" Rose called out. Alice raised her hand and rushed out of the room. The blood made the treecreeper quite queasy, esspically knowing where it came from.
"Is she gonna die?" Evalynn Finch quietly mumbled, making the few girls seated around her sob even harder. She felt horrible, knowing that miss Avocet was much the only mother to all of the other girls, and like another mother to her. She always saw her Auntie as slightly more of a mom, but she still loved Miss Avocet like another mother.
"Everyone needs to leave the room, especially the other younger girls. Take them to the garden or just anywhere not in the manor. I am going to take her to her room, but my dress is soaked in her blood and that will terrify them, and Alma, oh Gosh, This has to be traumatizing for her already, and seeing this...just hurry up and get the girls out of here!" Roisin instructed, running her thumb over miss Avocet's wrist. Rose quickly stood up, clearing her throat
"Everyone come with me please!" Rose called. All the girls quickly stood up, ready to leave as many of them uncomfortable with seeing the blood of their mother.
Normally, the garden was filled with laughter and chatter, but today it remained full of hushed whispers.
"I wonder if Miss Bunting is going to freak out?" Millicent mumbled to Isabelle and Alice.
"Not sure, but I do one thing is for certain, they seem to be much closer than just work partners and friends." Isabelle smirked a little, trying to lighten the sour mood.
"Well, they are bound to seem to be much closer to eachother, they have been together running the acdemy for quite a long time. I wonder how old they really are? I know miss Bunting is from north America, and she mentioned the colonies a few times, and I know that those came about in like, the 1700's. so she is at least that old, and I thought miss Avocet was like 2 years older, or something." Alice started to trail off, getting lost in her mind.
"Not sure, but im sure her reaction won't be pretty." Isabelle sighed, glancing over to see whst her other sisters were doing. Rose was sitting silently praying on the bench across from them, and Evalynn was bititng her nails to shreds. Alma, was no where in sight though.
"I'll be back." Isabelle stood up, venturing off to find her friend.
"What do you want?" Alma growled as Jack sat down beside her, a fake look of sympathy on his face.
"Oh, I simply must comfort you!" He Threw his arms around her, squeezing a stight as he could.
"Stop!" Alma shoved him off, making him fall to the ground.
"Oh, I guess I'll save the comfort for when she dies, and its your fault." He smirked as Alma's eyes narrowed as she stood up, wiping her tears away.
"Excuse me?" She demanded. Jack was sure he struck the right chord as he put on another face of sympathy.
"when Miss Avocet dies, it will be your fault. everyone Will Hate you. Your the one who made her come over and see you for that question because you were to stupid to get it yourself. awe dont look so sad!!" He continued "Dont worry, you did the same to mom!!" Jack kept going, as Alma's face drained of color.
"Dont you remember Mom laying on the floor, oh you wouldn't, you were a toddler Your dumb crying made her get up, and then she died right next to your playmat! you killed her!" He clasped his hands
"Stop!" Alma covered her ears, not wanting to hear anymore of it.
"Oh come on! dont you want to remember?"
"I do remember! now just shut up and leave!!! " She met his fierce brown eyes. Alma knew he composure was breaking as she tensed her legs and arms, trying to not lose it and hall off and give him a broken nose.
"Good luck mother murder! have fun when theys end you too a punishment loop! Jack patted her shoulder then left, pleased with the damage he had inflicted upon his younger sister.
Alma stayed seated, anger fading into a twisted sadness as she eyed the grassy ground. He was right. She was the reason miss Avocet had fainted and hit her head, and she was the reason her mom died. It was really just the horrid pneumonia Her mother got and unfortunate timing when she passed, but she knew both her brothers didn't see it that way. they both blamed her, as she had the same pneumonia, but she got over it well. The peregrine faintly remembered Jack crying over his mother as They took the body away, Then walking over to Alma as she laid in her little bed
"You better die also." He spat out at the young 2 year old, then pinched her cheek hard enough to make her cry. Alma subconciously brought her hand to where she was pinched, staring off blankly. That was where the hate he had towards her began, Alma was sure of it.
"Alma?" Isabelle sat beside her friend, nudging her slightly, concerned. "Hey, Al!" Isabelle slowly ran her hand up and down Alma's back, something she did frequently when Alma had nightmare.
"What..." Alma snapped out of it, slightly twitchy as she bounced her leg.
"Are you okay? I know this has to be quite hard on ya. remember, I'm always here for you, and so is everyone else." Isabelle took Alma's small hands into her own.
"I'm a murderer." Alma whispered.
"What?"
"I'm the reason she fell. she was coming to me." Alma finally let her tears pour out of her eyes as she put her head in her hands
"Alma No! You did nothing wrong! You're not a killer!" Isabelle held her arms out to Alma. "I know I'm not as good at this as Roisin is, but-" she stopped as Alma wrapped her arms tightly around the French girl.
"thank you..." Alma whispered after a little while of silence.
" No need to thank me Alma, I care about you and how your feeling! I love you-" Isabelle let the words slip as she started telling Alma how she felt about her in the moment, but let the words catch in her throat as another voice sounded from the back.
"Hey, Rose is taking dinner suggestions, is she okay?" Millie stared down at Alma, quickly rushing over. "Is she sick too?" the Thrush sat on the other side of Alma, trying to check for a fever.
"No she just needs hugs. lots of hugs." Isabelle Commented, a little embarrassed that she almost let her feelings slip.
"I got this!" Millie stood on the bench, looking over the bushes to the other side.
"HEY EVERYONE, COME HERE!" She screamed loudly. For such a tiny 15 year old, she definetly was able to scream like a 30 year old general.
"Whats going on?" Alice asked as she, Eva, and Rose all approached, then noticed Alma on the bench.
"She needs hugs!" Millie announced, pointing to the Peregrine. All three girls tackled the other 2 girls, along with Millie who got down and joined.
"Mom will be okay!" Rose ran her hair along Alma's now messy hair. Roisin watched from the window of Miss Avocets room, smiling warmly, then glancing back to Miss Avocet who laid still in her bed, as pale as her pristine white sheets. The Gannet slowly walked over to miss Avocet, sitting on the edge of her bed.
"Please Wake up soon ma. Your scaring us. We can't lose you." The 17 year old girl cradled Miss Avocet's hand. "Especially Alma."
"How is she?" Rose asked from the open window, turning as Roisin walked into the parlour, rubbing her tired eyes. The rest of the girls had Fallen alseep on the couches, cuddled together in little groups.
"She has a raging fever, a gash on her head that will get infected if we dont get some ointment or something on it soon, and shes been shaking and shivering like a wet street dog." Roisin joined her at the window. both girls stayed their for a long time, getting lost in their own thoughts
"I think I'm gonna lay down, please wake me when miss Bunting gets back-" Rose felt a tiny flapping weight hit her chest, screeching frantically.
"here!" Roisin tossed a nightgown behind a changing screen, miss Bunting quickly following after it Without a second to spare miss Bunting rushed out from behind the changing screen, without so much as a hello.
"Where is she?!" Miss bunting stared deeply in Rose's terrified brown eyes.
"Shes in her quarters!" Roisin called out. Both girls watched as as Miss bunting bolted out the door, flying at the speed of light down the corridor, smacking into the end of the hallway as she did so. the bunting did not stop moving as she entered the room though, dashing over to Miss Avocet's bed, stopping about 4 feet back, her face draining of color as she grabbed Miss Avocet's wrist, sighing in relief when she felt a weak but steady pulse. "What happened?!" She turned towards her two oldest wards.
"She woke up really late and she looked horrible but she claimed she was fine amd just overslept! Then was teaching, and then she fell, and cut herself, and We thought she died, and it was horrible plesse make her wake up soon please!!!" Rose started crying again.
" Give me a few moments child, stop getting so worked up Miss Avocet will be fine." Miss Bunting cooed softly to her oldest girls, hugging them both tightly,
Then turned back to her partner.
"She has quite the fever." Miss Bunting noted, then walked over to a locked cabinet adjacent to the bed, pulling out her own key to unlock it. after scanning for a certain bottle, she found a few suitable medicines and ointments.
"Girls, you should both retire for the night, you both look exhausted, and there isn't much sense in ya just standing around, I have it from here. Thank you for your work though. you prevented the situation from getting much worse!" Miss Bunting smiled painfully, her dark skin gleaming in the clear moonlight.
" Good night" both girls wished her farewell, making their way to the parlour, falling into a deep sleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows
"Esme, honey, I need ya to wake up now, only for a minute, just so you can take this." Miss Bunting sat next to Miss Avocet, waiting for her to wake up, but she barley moved. The Bunting waited another 30 minutes, in that time finished cleaning and bandaging the gash on Miss Avocet's head, then attempted to wake her again.
"Hey, Honey..." Miss Bunting gently shook the Avocet's shoulders. After about 30 seconds, Miss Bunting felt the woman shifting a little bit.
"What?" Miss Avocet groaned slightly, her head pounding unforgivingly as she forced her eyes open.
"Oh thank the birds!" Miss Bunting wrapped her arms around miss Avocet. "You ever do that again I'll be the one to kill you!!" Miss Bunting hugged her tightly.
"Do what?" Miss Avocet tried to sit up, needing Miss Buntings help.
"Drink this." Miss bunting handed her a small glass that had dissolved medicine in it once she was fully sitting upward. "You fainted while teaching the girls. Damn near gave me a heart attack at the council meeting, and you terrified all the girls, plus you also gifted them them a nice traumatizing experience to talk about in therapy. You Gave everyone quite a scare."
"I'm so sorry Diane." Miss Avocet let her head fall onto miss Bunting's shoulder, a few tears dripping from her own face.
"Don't apologize to me, Apologize to our traumatized girls! You cannot do this again! if you are ill, you are ill! You should have been resting in bed all day, not up and about." Miss Bunting took a deep breath. "Lay back down. your not leaving this bed for a few days, especially not after that head injury. And I am making you a doctors apointment as soon as they open on Monday." Diane supported her back and helped Esmeralda back to a laying position as the sun started to break the dark horizon, leaving little splots of sun dotting the cream colored walls. "Rose and Roisin though, they did wonderful keeping the others calm and they kept the house afloat. We both owe them a great deal of Thanks. I am going to go start breakfast." She smiled then kissed Miss Avocet's head.
"Oh I'll help-" Miss Avocet caught the intense glare of Miss Bunting, and laid back, burying herself into the blanket. "I love You." she called quietly after her.
"I love you too honey. Rest now, please."
"Is Miss Avocet alive?! Is she okay?!"
Of course miss Bunting expected this to be the first question as the girls crowded around the table for breakfast. All the girls were still quite tired and tense, if they we're awake enough to be. Rose was almost alseep at the kitchen table, leaning on Alice's shoulder. when she managed to finally fall asleep, she only got in about 1 and a half hours of sleep before it was time to get up. Roisin was just staring off into space, dark bags under her eyes. Roisin had awoken Alma and told her she was leaving to go dive as soon as they were dismissed, not being able to sleep at all that night.
"Yes miss Avocet is fine, but she will be on bed rest for the next few days, so you are all stuck with me!!" Miss Bunting smiled,
"And you cooking." Evalynn tried to hide her grimace, along with Rose and Roisin.
"it is truly not that bad!" miss Bunting turned back from the stove, her hands sliding down to her hips. Miss Bunting rarley, if ever cooked for the children, That being what Miss Avocet took on sense Diane seemed better at giving the girls food posioning than good food. It was more of a silent agreement between the two Head Ymbrynes, miss Bunting would tend to the laundry while Miss Avocet did the cooking.
"The stove, miss, it's on fire." Roisin pointed weakly at the tiny but growing flame.
"Wait What!?" Miss bunting turned around, then threw the tiny flaming pancake into the sink, doucing it some freshly collected well water. "Okay, we are going into the city for breakfast." Miss Bunting embarrasingly shut the other burners off. the girls all ran to get their shoes and coats, all except Alma.
"Can I... can I go see Miss Avocet?" The Peregrine pleaded. "Im truly not hungry, just worried, I couldn't eat anyway."
"Yes you may. I'm trusting you will watch over her correct?" miss Bunting asked as she slid on her own light green coat.
"Of course!!" she exclaimed.
"well, you know where to go child." Miss Bunting patted her shoulder. Alma quietly made her way to her Ymbryne's room after everyone left, creaking the huge door open, slipping inside with ease.
"Miss?" Alma called as she approached the bed, unsure if she was awake, but praying the she was.
"Hello my dear." Miss Avocet sat up and leaned against the wood headboard, glanced over at her youngest with a motherly smile.
"Mom!!" Alma shot off towards the bed, climbing on and wrapping her arms around her, sobbing into Miss Avocets chest.
"Honey, honey calm down, you are going to hyperventilate!" Miss Avocet held the 14 year old girl Tightly, trying to snap her out of her mind.
"Im sorry that I almost killed you!!" Alma held her tightly. "If you want to send me away go ahead, I understand!!" She whispered.
"ALMA!" miss Avocet quickly stopped the young girl. "First of all, you are not Even a hair responsible for what happened! that was all my fault dear! and secondly, I would never EVER send you away!! Don't Ever think about that! Your my baby girl, and your stuck with me like it or not!" Miss Avocet kissed Almas forehead. "But please calm down darling please. your getting yourself way too worked up!" Miss Avocet felt Almas head move to see her.
"I know this is stupid, but will you please hum for Me?" The Peregrine looked down, a little embarrassed, but miss Avocet just smiled and started humming softly.
Alma didn't move for a while after, her sobs subsiding into a into a quiet dreamless sleep on miss Avocet's chest. She didn't mind to much though, as she fell asleep too in the warm morning sunlight.
