"Whos crying?" The elder miss Finch took a few little hops to her door. She had just returned home quite late from a council meeting, a rather short one that only seemed to involve the older Ymbrynes. "Its loud...it must be close..." She took flight, slowly soaring down the hall of the moonlit house. it took the finch a little bit to narrow it down, but she finally landed outside the door to the huge kitchen.
"chirp." the Elder Finch chirped in hopes the crier would hear her, but the soft sobs seem to drown anything other noise out. after a few more half chirps in an attempt to get the childs attention, it seemed Miss Finch was clearly not getting anywhere.
after a rather straining transformation, and woman who looked about late 60's early 70's laid spead out on the dusty old bed.
"Hurts so much each time I stay longer. How long had it been this time? at least a few years at this point." She sighed, then sat up, glancing over towards her dresser which had a thick layer of dust on it. everything. in her room did, which wasnt really unusual, she rarley used anyhting in it.
"I should probably ask Evalynn to dust in here one day...or I could..." Miss Finch walked over to her dresser, but found only dresses that were much too time consuming to put on.
"Guess I'm going with a nightgown... Where did I leave those? the closet?" Miss Finch smiled as she pulled out a pale blue nightgown, her favorite from when she was still remaining in Human form. Her partner miss Goose had sewn it for her after finding out her other one got torn
by a rusty nail miss G never fixed. It had been her favorite ever sense. "surprised it's still wearable." Miss Finch smiled, but soon it left her face as she marched quietly towards the kitchen.
"pardon me, but Who might be in the kitchen?" She called. the crying suddenly ceased, but no voice came to replace it.
"Hello?" Miss Finch called out, reaching up onto the door frame. Unless her niece moved it, there should be...
"Yes!" Miss Finch pulled down the tarnished silver key. fiddling with it in the door lock, she was able to finally get the key to unlock the old door.
"Who might be in...Eva? what are you doing?" miss Finch stayed as still as a statue as Her niece froze in the windowsill which was perched half open, with one of her legs dangling out.
"Were you trying...to escape out the window?" The elder Finch watched The younger Finch slowly bring her leg back in and shut the window
"No.." Eva said with a hint of guilt in her voice as she stayed perched on the window.
"Well then dear, may you please take a seat, I would like to discuss something with you." Miss Finch pulled out a oak chair.
"Can't." Eva tried to keep her back turned to her Aunt, terrified to have almost been caught crying. "Shoulda been faster idiot." Her mind yelled at her. At least if she was able to get out the window she could have hid in the bushes until she left, but now, her Auntie sat in human form and Eva knew that the dreaded question, was coming.
"Honey, were you the one crying?"
"And she asked it before I could even fabricate a story, lovely!" Eva thought as bit the side of her mouth nervously. "No." She snapped viciously, pulling, a hairtie off the coutner and tying her hair back into a low bun. "You heard nothing. Go back to bed, your to old to be awake."
"Excuse me little girl?" Miss Finch could see her Niece stop stirring whatever was in the bowl in, instantanously regretting her words. "I'll have you know im only 200 and something! much young enough to know what I heard young lady! Now, I would like to conversate with you. Please Turn around Evalynn!" Miss Finch waited, but Her niece stayed facing the counter.
"sorry but I must decline, I cannot have a conversation at this time. I have much to much work to do!" Evalynn stirred rapidly. the mixture shooting out onto the starched white apron leaving little specks of funfetti all over. Evalynn Finch moved a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear, not expecting the sudden hand on her shoulder which made her jump out of her skin.
"F*ck!" Evalynn screeched, bitting her tounge and dropping the bowl onto her left foot.
"Laungage!" Miss Finch snapped, but stopped Immediatly as her Niece fell flat on her butt from the heavy porcellian bowl colliding with her ankle. The younger woman clenched her jaw tightly as she dug her nails into her ankle, cussing silently to herself.
"Eva?" miss Finch bent down, trying to look at her nieces ankle, but it soon dissapeared from sight as Evalynn Finch tried frantically to crawl away, but soon felt a hand placed on her shoulder.
"Honey your not gonna get far." Miss Finch sighed. "Come on, I'll help you to a chair!" the elder Finch would have helped the younger woman up, but Evalynn was not having it.
"Stop I dont need your help!" Evalynn slid back even farther, smacking backfirst into the kitchen island. This would have been okay if it weren't for the bag of frosting that tipped over halfway, spilling the top of its gooey mess onto the younger Finch's head and shoulders.
"Oh dear." Miss Finch pursed her lips and tried not to laugh, but that instantly went away as her niece just full on broke down into Sobs, covering her rosy face and limp crawling to under the kitchen table.
"Evalynn." Miss Finch called, praying her niece would come out without a fight, but all she got in return was a "Please Go away!!" and a few heart wrenching sobs.
"I feel like this table has gotten smaller." was the first words Evalynn heard as a figure crawled under the table, and sat in front of her criss cross. "When you were younger I feel this was much larger. Heck, when me and your dad were kids this felt like a castle." Miss Finch tried desperately to make her smile.
"I will litterally pay you to leave me here right now!" Miss Finch tried to curl up even tighter to shun the world out.
"Im not leaving you sobbing under our kitchen table at 1:47 in the morning dear. Now, if you would, please tell me why your crying?" Miss Finch begged. "I'll give you some strawberry cough drops if you tell me!"
"what?" Evalynn Finch felt the tears stop for a single moment as she glanced up at her aunt who sat in front of her with a smile.
"Some of those cough drops I always had on me when you were a young girl. I used to bribe you to get in the tub, stay still, or come out from under this table with them. you loved them as a girl, and it seems they still might work." Miss Finch placed a hand on her nieces. "Please Eva. your scaring me. I dont know if your hurt, or Ill, or Emotionally distressed, and I want to help you! your still my baby girl-"
Miss Finch felt a sudden weight shoved in her chest befire she even finished, arms wrappign tightly around the elder, Eva breaking into sobs harder than she had been.
"shhhh ahhh Evie, its okay, your okay. Cry it out, shhhh." Miss Finch felt sticky frosting dabbing her own nightgown and cheek from Evalynns hair, but she didnt much mind as her niece held onto her like the world. would have been obliviated if she let go.
After almost 20 minutes of Just holding Her Niece, Miss Finch could hear the sobs subsiding into small hiccups, and Eva's grip had went from total death grip to a more gentle but still tight grip.
"Can You tell me whats gotten you all worked up Evie?" Miss Finch ran her hand up and down Evalynns back she she rested her head on miss Finches chest.
"Its dumb." the younger Finch whispered.
"Oh honey, nothing is dumb to me, especially with you." Miss Finch adjusted herself.
"I just cant do anything right." Evalynn remained staring forward. "First, I forgot that Norman had a bakesale until he threw a fit because I wasnt baking." She took a deep breath "then SUPRISE! we have no flour, so I ran as fast as I could, litterally ran because its Tuesday, and the market closes at 7 on Tuesday, so I run home, twist my ankle. and fall into a ditch on the way, becaus ethat if course would make the night complete!"
Eva felt herself starting to shake. "and then Sadie came in to ask for money for the book fair, which of course, I have no money on my person, so I said she would have to wait until tomrrow to get the money because the bank closes at 6, so as per usual Shes throwing a huge fit, and then, a fight beaks out between Marlene and Norman, and then luna joined in, and Alexander needs supplies for his project, right now even though its not due until Friday, and he needs to get it done right now so he can get extra credit, and everyone starting full on yelling and, and my migraine was so horrible I ended up screaming at them all, and now they are all angry" She shut her eyes.
"and the medicine I took isnt working, and I just want to go to sleep, I haven't slept right in days, I feel like crap, I burned a dozen cupcakes and my hand already, I still have 6 dozen cupcakes to make, ive been trying to finish a model of The stars for Alexander, and im sitting under our kitchen table at 2 in the morning sobbing with frosting in my hair! I cannot handle this anymore Auntie!" Evalynn rubbed at her newly raw cheeks.
"Honey thats not dumb in the slightest! your overburdened and you clearly are under way to much stress! why wouldnt you call for me? I could have left early and came to help!" Miss Finch wished her Niece would stop shaking and breathing so sporadically, it would make Evas migraine feel a little better.
"I dont need help, im just being stupid! I should have been so much more organized, and I should have just taken better medicine, and i could have easily-"
"Evalynn Rose!" miss Finch snapped. Eva shut her mouth quickly, her tearful blue eyes meeting her Aunt's shiny green ones.
"This is most certainly not your fault Alright? you need to ask for help Evalynn! Im here for you, please know that! I might stay in bird form, but I can change easily and come and aid you!!! now come on, lets get you upstairs." Miss Finch scolded.
"I Can't!!" Eva yelped, climbing out from under the table. She made a good attempt to stand, but her Ankle quickly gave out, making the woman yelp as she felt to her knees.
"No. im banning you from this kitchen, and your going to come with me upstairs, taking a quick shower, and then your going to get in bed and rest, and thats final." miss Finch braced the younger woman. Evalynn held no oppostion now, knowing it would be useless to try and fight her aunt who always got the final say. Plus she was to tired too even try.
after a quick shower (sitting due to her ankle), the younger miss Finch finally got nestled into her bed, elevating her throbbing ankle with a pillow.
"Here, take this." miss Finch sat beside Evalynn, handing her a small cup and 2 pills. She took them with one swig, then laid back, groaning a little as her head hit the pillow.
"Dont worry, I'll take care of everything just sleep, alright.' the elder miss Finch smiled at her niece, then bent down and kissed her forehead. "Good night, I love you Evie."
"Thank You. Good night, I love you too." Miss Evalynn Finch smiled for the first time that night as she shut her eyes.
"what time is it?" Evalynn groaned as the sun blared through her. beige-ish pink curtains onto her face like a stage light. For once, Evalynn felt quite well rested, and her ankle didnt hurt as much as last night.
"10:47." She whsipered, her heart jumping,as she realized she was late. "Auntie must have gotten the kids to class. I don't hear fighting or yelling." Evalynn sat up. "Where are those two pills Auntie left for me?" Oh there they are- wait?" Evalynn held several little wrapped candies from the nightstand.
"strawberry cough drops" Evalynn felt a smile come along her face as she peered over at a little sticky note. It took a moment for Evalynn to be able to focus on it, but soon she was able to read it over.
"For My little girl Evie. Stop being such an
adult. I love you sweetheart!"
-M. Finch.
