When we last left off, Natasha defeated Zenith once and for all, putting an end to the Infernal Cult for good. However, a surprise earthquake forced the teen to sacrifice herself to save Diana, promising that she'll rescue Calreath from the depths of the base. Do note that the first half of this chapter will be different from the canon events of the story. With that said, I hope you all enjoy this next part.

Infernal Base: Sometime later
"Ngggh…" Natasha winced, slowly getting up off the ground as she opened her eyes, only to be met with darkness. With the exception of the diming lights on a few machines, she couldn't see a thing at all. Once more, she was trapped within the dark confines of the unknown, lost as to where she should begin searching. It was then that she heard a familiar cry, the purple-haired girl turning her head and saw Mew appear right beside her. Mew! I'm so glad you're alright!"
"Mew, Mew!" The Psychic type chirped, it's tone of voice indicating that all of her Pokémon are alright. Natasha sighed in relief, knowing that she wasn't alone anymore in this forsaken base.
"Come, we should find the others. We'll be able to find a way out of here if we work together." She told her Pokémon, the New Species Pokémon giving her a quick nod as they made there way over the rubble where the metal door once stood. Upon climbing over the debris, the first thing they saw was that the path leading to the exit was blocked by a massive pile of rocks, which would take ages to remove, even with the help of her Pokémon. Putting that aside for now, she made her way down the short path to the studio room, her eyes fixed on the recording equipment, which were damaged beyond repair. Just then, a low growl of sorts emanated from the large hole in the wall, where Heatran crawled through upon breaking free from Zenith's control. Recalling that Manaphy had wandered through that hole in the search for Calreath, the purple-haired girl opted to walk though it, a sudden chill running up her spine. She felt that someone…or something was watching her, and it wasn't a friendly presence either.
"Grrrroooooooaaaaaa!" A sudden roar echoed throughout the cave, the purple-haired girl screaming in surprise as she jumped on the spot. Sensing the fear within its trainer, the Mew opted to use Flash, its entire body lighting up and pierced the dark veil surrounding them. This sudden light granted the duo the ability to see their surprise tormentor, but it wasn't what they expected at all. Standing in front of them wasn't Heatran, nor was it Groudon; instead, it was the legendary Volcanion, the embodiment of steam. The Steam Pokémon glared at Natasha, angry with the girl for invading its territory as it attempted to approach her. But before it could do so, a short quake permeated the air, causing the legendary Pokémon to halt on the spot. Turning it's head to the side, it uttered a quick roar, stomping towards the source as a quick sigh of relief escaped from her mouth.
"What was Volcanion doing here? Did Zenith also have control over it?" She asked herself, watching the beast crawl deeper into the cave. It's presence made no sense here; if it was under Zenith's control, then he would've used it against her during their battle. Heck, he wouldn't have needed to drop Calreath down a trap door as it would've been the perfect counter against his Water-type Pokémon. Her train of thought was soon interrupted by a quiet chirping, the purple-haired girl looking down and saw that it was…Manaphy?
"Mana, Manaphy?" The small Pokémon chirped, its eyes widening in joy upon seeing its friends. Gently approaching it, the Mew began conversing with it, the two Mythical Pokémon talking to one another before Mew began chirping at Natasha, a look of surprise forming on her face.
"Y-You mean Calreath's down here?!" She exclaimed, the Psychic type nodding in confirmation. "Lead the way, Manaphy."
"Mana!" The Seafaring Pokémon chirped, gesturing the duo to follow it. Walking closely behind the Water type, the purple-haired girl called out for Calreath, hoping that he'd respond to her cries. After a few minutes of silence, she soon heard what sounded like call for help, putting the teenager on edge as she quickly ran towards the source. Soon enough, she found the source of the cry, a look of joy forming on her face. Standing right before her was Calreath, the Gym Leader's body covered in scrapes and bruises, his outfit sporting several tears in it. But the most surprising part was that he was holding someone else in his arms, the Infernal Cult leader himself.
"N-Natasha?" The blue-haired man exclaimed; a look of surprise etched on his face. "What are you doing here?"
"I stayed behind to help you out; I promise Diana I would save you!" She replied, making her way to her friend's side. "Did you need a hand with something?"
"Yeah, I need you to help me carry this guy." Calreath replied, shooting a look at Zenith. Like the Gym Leader, his body was covered in scrapes and bruises, but weren't life-threatening, even at his age. Approaching her former adversary, she wrapped her arm around him, the duo steadily making their leave as their respective Mythical Pokémon lead the way. Around a minute later, the old man's eyes fluttered open, a weak sneer soon forming on his face.
"To receive mercy from my enemies…how the mighty have fallen." Zenith replied, a hint of bitterness in his tone.
"I'll take that as a thank you, my good sir!" Natasha chimed in, winking at her adversary. In a twisted sort of way, she could understand his sorrow; to have been hyped up as the ultimate victor of the Cult Wars, only to have been told that it was all a lie would've broken an ordinary person. A quick look in his eyes indicates that he had lost whatever powers that were bestowed onto him by Her, whoever Her actually was. This whole ordeal could prove to be beneficial to her, as she could finally gain some answers on the whole cult business plaguing the region. "Hey, Zenith…why did you found the Infernal Cult? You had a respectable career as the Head Librarian of the Utira Library, so why toss that away?"
"…I didn't want that to be my legacy." He admitted, turning his head to face her. "We all get one shot at life, and I didn't want to spend it tending to an old library. I wanted to make my name known throughout the world, be it fame or infamy, and the Infernal Cult was my ticket to such fame. I don't know when She gave me my power, but it was at that moment that my destiny would be revealed. Founding the Infernal Cult, I sought to take over the region using Groudon's power, with the whole world following suit. Unfortunately, a side effect of my scheme was that people would leave the Infernal Cult and form their own cults to counter mine. Back in the day, there were dozens upon dozens of cults, each one worshiping a Legendary Pokémon, be it from the regions under the Official Pokémon League, or independent regions such as Torren, Urobos and Tandor."
"So I take it that you dealt with these rival cults behind the scenes?" Calreath chimed in, interested in where this was all going.
"A few of them, mainly the smaller ones. But once the First Augur rose to power, he declared war on the cults, forcing us to form a temporary alliance. Every month or so, the cult leaders would hold a meeting to discuss the situation regarding the Cult Wars." Zenith continued, catching Natasha by surprise. The cults were working together behind the scenes? Why would they even do so, considering their opposing beliefs. "Why do you look surprised, Natasha? You saw it yourself that we're willing to work together when necessary."
"What do you…" She began, only to pause mid-sentence. She had seen the cults working together, back in Telnor Cave alongside Damian. They had seen Audrey and Zenith conspire together to dispose of Jaern. Had they have worked together on other occasions to deal with external threats to the cults? "How did you know I was there that day? Why not say anything to Audrey, or have your grunts capture us?"
"As the head of the first cult ever formed, I've developed a sixth sense so to speak. I needed to in order to avoid getting jumped by an assassin from a rival cult. As for why I didn't catch you right there and then, I didn't consider either of you two to be threats. Even if you had alerted the police, our agents would've done the job in the blink of an eye. Looking back on it, I wish I had dealt with you back then." He replied.
"And looking back on that day, I should've let you deal with Jaern…" Natasha replied as well, another question forming in her mind. "This cult alliance, were you the leader of the alliance?"
"One of the leaders, there were three other cult leaders who managed the alliance, put into place to prevent one person from amassing too much power. There was me, head of the Infernal Cult, and the president of the alliance. Then there was the vice president, Audrey, head of the Abyssal Cult and my eternal rival. The third leader was the chief of research, Reukra, head of the Perfection Cult. Finally, there was our chief of finances, East, head of the Sky Cult." The old man answered, the teenager's eyes widening in surprise. If what he was saying is true, then this could explain why the cults were well-organized and well-funded. But there was something off about his statement; he said that East was the head of the Sky Cult, when in reality it was Jaern.
"By East, I assume you're talking about the Gym Leader of Helios City?" She inquired.
"Precisely. I tell you, it was quite a treat to hear that one of the region's strongest trainers was on our side." Zenith answered, catching Calreath by surprise.
"N-No way…this can't be true, it can't be. East was a close friend of mine; he wouldn't be affiliated with a cult; much less be a cult leader." The blue-haired man denied the allegations, only for Natasha to shake her head sadly.
"As sad as this may sound, it's the truth. East was a member of the Sky Cult, but he wasn't the leader." She replied, catching Zenith by surprise. "The Leader of the Sky Cult is the Second Augur, Jaern."
"T-That worthless bootlicker?! The one who acted as the First Augur's personal toady; he was the head of the Sky Cult?!" The old man exclaimed; his eyes widened as his skin was now as pale as a ghost. "B-But what was East doing at those meetings if he wasn't the leader?"
"Perhaps East was the leader of the Sky Cult at one point, but was quickly ousted by Jaern behind the scenes. Or perhaps he wasn't the leader at all, but was ordered to act as the leader in Jaern's place, casting suspicion away from him. I can't say I know about what happened regarding the Sky Cult." Natasha proposed, a look of darkness forming on the old man's face.
"It wasn't enough that the miserable wretch fooled me, but to become the Augur and call for our extermination, all while he was just as guilty as us. That cretin is the lowest form of scum, unworthy of the title of Augur." Zenith seethed under his breath. "I don't know how he managed to dupe Persephone into working with him, but it won't end well for her as well."
"Speaking of which, was she present in those alliance meetings you mentioned earlier?" Calreath inquired.
"No, she wasn't. This may come as a surprise to you, but the Cult of Darkrai she formed was the second incarnation of the cult. The first one was defeated by my hands, before the First Augur rose to power. Jaren must've kept the cult's revival a secret from us, using her as his ace in the hole." The cult leader answered. "He knew that if she were to appear in a meeting, it would raise suspicion, hence why he played smart and kept her away from us."
"Do you think that those two were behind the disappearance of the First Augur?" The blue-haired man inquired.
"Definitely. Truth be told, I was working on a plan with Audrey and Reukra on how to deal with him for good. But before we were able to put it into action, news spread like wildfire about the disappearance of him and his family. And shortly afterwards, Jaern rose to power as the Second Augur, working tirelessly to remove all traces of his existence, while making him look like a god. Mighty convenient for him, don't you think?" Zenith replied.
"Indeed. Had it not been for his propaganda machine, I'm sure he would've been found out ages ago. Who knows how many lies he's fed the public?" Natasha chimed in.
"'If you repeat a lie enough times, people will eventually accept it as the truth.' It's one of the most well-known propaganda techniques to control the masses. I should know; I've read dozens of books about human history." The old man told her, turning his head to face forward. "Of course, I won't be able tell any of this to the police due to how brainwashed they are. Knowing them, they'll most likely pin the blame on East and leave it at that."
"I won't allow Jaern to escape justice; I'll make sure that he pays for his crimes!" Natasha pledged, the teenager soon shielding her eyes from the sudden light peering through the cracks of the rubble. Guess all that talking had made the trip a lot quicker than they expected. Gesturing Zenith to lean onto the wall, Natasha and Calreath began digging through the rubble, the pile collapsing with ease as the trio saw their way out. Scooping the cult leader within their arms, the trio walked the final leg of the journey and emerged out of the remains of the base, and back towards civilization.
0000
Nora and Diana were waiting anxiously at the Rose Crater entrance, with half a dozen police officers right behind them. The Gym Leader had informed them about what had happened within the Infernal Base and requested some back-up. The officers were busy planning a search party for the missing trainers, the sergeant glued to his phone as he spent the time calling various construction companies in the hopes of borrowing their equipment.
"It's all my fault, I left her back there, just as I had left my sister that day. I should've helped her when I had the chance, but I was too scared to do anything. Perse's right, I'm just a lowly coward…" Diana blamed herself, her gaze locked on the ground as Nora rested a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't blame yourself; Natasha chose to stay behind. Nothing you could've said would change her mind." The green-haired girl consoled her friend, the touching moment soon interrupted when one of the officers spotted something approaching the group.
"B-Boss! Call off the rescue party; they made it out! I repeat, the missing people have made it out!" The officer called out, catching everyone's attention as they stepped back in shock. Making their way towards the group was Natasha and Calreath, the duo holding Zenith as the sergeant ended his phone call. Quickly mobilizing his officers, he ordered them to apprehend the cult leader, the old man offering no resistance whatsoever.
"You have the right to remain silent, Zenith. Anything you say or do will be used against you in court!" The sergeant stated, the officers putting the cult leader in the back of the van before locking the door. "You four have done the region a great service. Rest assured, I'll make sure that Jaern hears about your exploits."
"Err, thank you, sir…" Natasha replied, a hint of hesitance in her tone. Tipping his cap in respect, the officers hopped into the van and drove off, leaving the four heroes to themselves.
"Diana! It's so good to—" Calreath began, only to get cut off by his girlfriend embracing him, a muffled sobbing escaping from her mouth.
"Cal, you reckless fool! Don't scare me like that again…" Diana cried, the blue-haired man gently petting her back. "I was so scared that I lost you; I-I don't know what I would've done if you turned up dead…"
"I'm so sorry for scaring you like that; I didn't expect Zenith to pull a cheap move like that. I'm just glad that you're all safe and sound." He reassured her, the brown-haired woman raising her head from his shoulder as she gazed at Natasha.
"Natasha…thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Not only did you save my life, but you saved my boyfriend's life as well. I really, really owe you one…" Diana thanked her, wiping her tears away.
"No need to thank me, I was just doing the right thing." Natasha replied, wiping a bit of sweat off her forehead.
"So now that you're here, are you going to tell Nora what you were going to say to me?" The brown-haired woman teased, piquing Nora's interest.
"M-Maybe a-another time!" The purple-haired girl blurted, her cheeks bright red with embarrassment, the Gym Leader giggling at her plight.
"It's fitting that the Infernal Cult, a group who worships Groudon is now buried beneath the earth…" Nora mused, turning her head to look at her friend. "I'm surprised you didn't leave Zenith behind."
"It wouldn't feel right, you know. I mean, he was an evil bastard, but it's not up to me to decide his fate. Let the justice system handle his punishment, I say." Natasha told her. "Besides, he told Calreath and I a lot of interesting details about the cults. But we can talk about it another time; where did Persephone go?"
"We weren't able to catch up to her, but I saw her head towards Route 16. It's on the other side of Mount Rose and leads to Narra Town. From there, all she needs to do is cross the border into Midna Town, and she'll be a stone's throw from her base in Shade Forest." Diana informed her, her gaze shifting towards Calreath's injuries. "I'd like to help, but I got to get Calreath to a hospital."
"I'm going to make my way to Gaea Town; after all it's where the 8th gym was before the First Augur disappeared. Who knows, I might be able to find a spare badge or two. Once you've dealt with Persephone, I'd like to hear what you learned from Zenith. Stay safe, Natasha." Nora requested.
"You stay safe as well, Nora. There's still three cults left to deal with, and I intend to wipe them out." Natasha replied, the duo giving each other a brief hug as the group went their separate way.
Narra Town
The trek down the mountain was long, but relatively peaceful, no thanks to Natasha's efforts. With Zenith's grip on the region being quashed, she no longer had to look over her shoulder for his brainwashed lackeys. The purple-haired took in deep breaths whenever she could, thoroughly enjoying the crisp mountain air that flooded her lungs. It was a step up from the muggy air that permeated within the Infernal Base. Eventually she made it to Narra Town, a relatively humble place that was famous for its market, which sold a wide variety of goods from other regions, goods which were very hard to acquire in Torren. She was sorely tempted to pay the market a visit, only to be caught off-guard by an animalistic cry of surprise, coming from the uninhabited southwest corner of the town. Quickly making her way to the source, she was soon confronted by a group of Sky Cultists cornering a pair of Delta Pokémon.
The first Pokémon was a Girafarig, its body a light blue, with streaks of purple fluid running down its head and neck via see-through arteries. The arteries lead to the metallic head on its tail, its horns resembling that of a bighorn sheep as purple fumes billowed out of its mouth. The Girafarig also had several spines running down its neck, which appeared to be where the poisonous fluid was generated. Finally, it had several metal plates all over its body; on its thighs, its chin and throat, and the top of its head. The second Pokémon was an Arcanine, with a more draconic appearance than normal. Its body was a creamy color, with golden fur on its underbelly. Its tail was also gold, as were the neatly trimmed tufts of fur on its shins. Additionally, it had a billowing gold mane growing from the back of its head, a thin pair of gold whiskers growing on its face. It was the source of the growl, it's face locked into a snarl as it glared at the cultists.
"Heheheh, who would've thought that this backwater town would be home to TWO Delta Pokémon? The boss is going to like this…" The first cultist sneered.
"I just hope he deals with those Darkrai cultists for good; they've been nothing but a thorn on our side since the beginning." A second cultist chimed in, turning her head to the side and saw Natasha running towards them. "As if our day couldn't get any better…"
"You! Back away from those Pokémon this instant!" Natasha demanded, reaching for a Pokéball.
"Oh yeah? Who's gonna make us?" The first cultist taunted, with the teenager throwing her Pokéball to the ground as her Volcarona emerged from the device. Shooting a glare at the cultists, it began flapping its wings quickly, the cultists struggling to keep their footing but were soon blown away, flying several meters back. Quickly scrambling to their feet, the cultists fled the area, a scoff escaping from the teenager's mouth.
"As pathetic as their leader…" She commented, with Volcarona nodding in agreement. With the threat having been dealt with, the teenager approached the Delta Pokémon, who were eyeing her up in curiosity. "No need to be afraid anymore, those awful people have left the area."
"Arrrrrrrr~" The Arcanine growled, though not in malice. It was thankful that she had saved them from becoming the Sky Cults' war loot and was willing to join her side. The Girafarig, sensing the trust between the Volcarona and its trainer was also interested in joining her side, the Delta Species approaching her as well.
"You two want to come along with me? In that case, welcome to the club!" She smiled, taking out a pair of empty balls and put them on the ground, the wild Pokémon tapping on the button as they were soon sucked into the devices. With a joint 'ping' echoing throughout the area, the purple haired girl pocketed the balls before recalling her Volcarona, the teenager, turning her head to the south. "Now all I need to do is—ehh?" she began, being caught off-guard as her Noibat escaped from its ball. Eyeing up her shoulder, it quickly climbed up her arm and rested atop her, a small smile on the trainers' face.
"Ah, you must be the fabled Delta Trainer…" A voice called out, the teenager turning to see a strange figure in what looked like a robe modelled after the legendary Giratina. "You look small, in fact your people look small. There's just something about you that reeks of fragility, but I'm unsure on how to describe it."
"Sorry, but who are you exactly?" Natasha inquired, a look of confusion on her face.
"It's understandable that you do not know who we are. We've kept quiet, and will keep quiet until it is time to make our move. It's something we need to do and for that, you have our sincerest apologies. Everything is going just as the Mistress predicted. You and the fake prophet took down the Infernal Cult, not to mention how you took down the Abyssal Cult by yourself. The shards of the crystal are moving again; very soon you will see the true power of the crystal, of our crystal." The cultist told her, his words leaving her utterly confused.
"Look, I'm sorry to bother you, but I need to make my way to the Shade Forest." She apologized, the mysterious cultist turning away from her.
"You may do so, but know that earth will return to the mirror very soon…" He told her, walking off into the distance as she was left speechless. What does he mean by that last comment? Who exactly is this Mistress he mentioned? Was she the one who bestowed Zenith's power onto him? Her train of thought was soon interrupted when she accidentally bumped into someone. "Ahh! I'm so sorry sir." She apologized, only to realize who it was in front of her.
"Be careful next ti—" Malde began, only to figure out who it was that bumped into him. "Ah, Natasha. Good to see you. I've heard about your success in defeating the Infernal Cult. I'd like to hear about your victory, but I need to head over to Shade Forest right away. I assume you know why?"
"Indeed, I need to pay Persephone a visit. She took Diana's Pokémon from her, and I'm taking it back from her!" Natasha told him.
"Then it seems we share a similar goal. I plan on saving Darkrai from becoming her puppet. Some extremely exciting things are about to happen, and I don't want to miss out. Come, let's not keep her waiting!" The old man began, the duo quickly making the trip towards Shade Forest, hoping to thwart the cult leader's plan in time.
Cult of Darkrai Base: Shade Forest
The duo had arrived at the entrance to the secret base, where Damian had been waiting for them. Without a word, he followed the duo inside the base. Quietly creeping through the base, the trio made their way towards the room where the Cult of Darkrai perform their twisted rituals, the entire cult watching eagerly as Persephone stood before the altar.
"It's been a while since we were here last. My friends, it has been one long ride. Years and years of developing machines, studying Pokémon and the world, all to show Darkrai just how loyal we are. But alas, it abandons us at every turn, running to my sister's side. That changes right here, right now!" Persephone declares, taking out Diana's Pokéball from her pocket. "Within my hand is Cresselia, the magnet that lures Darkrai away from us. I shall use it to bring Darkrai to our base!"
Moments later, the room grew dark, the New Moon Pokémon materialized over the altar. Its gaze shifted towards the Pokéball, a smirk growing on the cult leader's face as she held the strongest bargaining chip within her grasp.
"Darkrai, I won't humor you with compliments like before. You've ignored me and went to my sister twice, the second time being the night Natasha escaped. But first time we met, we were so close to finding the cure to immortality. That was the night Jaern, you and I got rid of the First Augur. And if Mew hadn't rescued the prisoner, he would've been finished off for good. Looking back on that night, I can see why you would leave in disgust…" She began, whispering the last part to herself, though Natasha was able to hear it. "But now…now is where I stop playing nice. In my hand is a Pokéball containing Cresselia, which I'm going to put on the ground right…now."
Upon her words, she gently lowered the ball to the ground, only to raise her right foot in the air above the device, the purple-haired girl stepping back in surprise. She wasn't going to go that far, right? The Darkrai grew agitated at the sight, as if it had a hunch what her plan was.
"If you leave this place, or disobey me one time, I'll stomp on this ball without hesitation. This will damage the release mechanism, preventing Cresselia from escaping her prison. The choice, is yours…" She threatened, staring Darkrai in the eye as a murderous look overcame the New Moon Pokemon.
"Stop right there, you fiend!" Natasha called out, approaching the cult leader as she turned her head in surprise.
"Welcome back, Natasha. I've kept your cell neat and tidy in the event that you come back." Persephone taunted, her gaze shifting towards Malde and Damian. "And I see you brought some back-up with you.
"In my world, Pokémon abuse will be illegal, with the guilty being handed the harshest punishment possible." Malde warned her, the two infected humans approaching their enemy.
"Oh no, the orphan and the codger have arrived. I'm so scared…" She retorted sarcastically.
"I'll give you something to be scared about should you go through with your despicable threat." The old man threatened her, the cult leader yawning in boredom. "I will not let another legendary Pokémon become enslaved by humans."
"Like I haven't heard that one before…" She rolled her eyes, as if the mutated humans before her weren't worth her time. "Enough jabbering, I've come to claim what is rightfully mine, and you lot won't stop me!"
"Please, I kicked your ass back in Selene City. Why would I be scared of Jaern's personal toady? You're just as pathetic as him." Natasha shot back, the cult leader shooting her a vicious glare.
"Don't you dare compare me to that man! I'll…I'll show you that I really mean business!" Persephone snapped, turning to face Darkrai. "Darkrai, send them all to Natasha's Dream Realm!"
"Raaaaaiiii…" The Darkrai growled, refusing to obey its captor. Sighing in annoyance, the cult leader raised her foot in the air and was ready to stomp on the Pokéball. But before her foot could make contact, the New Moon Pokemon's eyes glowed red, the entire room growing dark as it unleashed its terrifying power. "Raaaaaiiiiii!"
Within moments, a dark portal appeared on the ground, sucking everyone in the room as the cultists attempted to flee. However, they were the first to be absorbed by the portal, with Persephone following suit. Moments later, Natasha, Malde and Damian were enveloped by the portal, a terrified scream escaping the teenager's mouth as she was sent to a world unlike anything she's seen before.
And with that cliffhanger, this chapter comes to a close. Sorry for the late upload, but I was busy writing a special chapter to celebrate the re-run of Empyreal Tragicomedy in Azur Lane. I know a few people may be surprised about the cult alliance plot line I mentioned within the chapter, but it sounded realistic in my mind. I mean if the Infernal and Abyssal Cults were willing to work together on a plan to assassinate Jaern in Telnor Town, what's to say that they haven't worked together on other occasions? Anyway, I'll see you all in the next chapter, where we take our first steps into the Dream Realm. Thank you all for reading, I'll see you in the next chapter.
