Interlude Day 002.1

Circling the "Abandoned Dungeon" took less than they thought, because in about 5 minutes they walked out the woods and into a clearing that had a wooden house covered by flowered climbing plants.

Nearby there was a simple rock fountain that feed a little artificial pond and not too far from it, the forest edge was wrapped by the same thick ivy that sealed the dungeon... which exit must have been beside the same type of crystal that they had found on the other side, since there was one peeking on their right.

Poccha chirped quietly in wonder, it was a beautiful place to live, even if he preferred the panorama of the ocean from his home inside the jaws of Sharpedo Bluff. Few things could really compare in fact, now that he thought about it.

− There are people inside. Four or five, I can't really tell. − Pikachu revealed, bringing him back from his musing.

− Then let's go and knock, shall we? − Lizard proposed, walking ahead and the duo followed suit.

When they reached the door, the Fire Type still on the lead politely knocked and waited for a response, but when no movement was heard from the inside he tried again a bit louder, though the result was the same.

− Are you sure there's really people in here? − Poccha voiced his doubts as the Charmander tried for the third time.

− Excuse me, is anyone at home? − the senpai called aloud and that finally seemed to be enough to rouse the owners, even if the noises were mostly groans and whines.

− Libeccio, it's too early for mail delivery and you know it! We talked about this! − a male young voice, probably pre-teen judging by its pitch, complained as its source came closer. The door opened shortly afterwards, revealing a Bayleef who was rubbing his eye with a vine. − What is it ab-... − finally he noticed the trio at the doorstep and froze, alarmed. − You're not Libeccio.

− We're sorry to disturb you so early in the morning, but we're in need of help. − the senpai formally requested, probably to gain his favor. Or maybe it was just Lizard's default mode with civilians.

There was a beat, then the Leaf Pokémon, tilting his head to the side, awkwardly called: − Moooooom!

− What's the matter Moss? − a female Meganium reached him and peeked from above, crooking her neck to look at them. − Ah. ...Who are you?

− My name's Lizard and these are my companions Poccha and Pikachu. − the Fire Type gestured at each of them who waved at mother and son. − We're sorry to have awakened you, but we crossed the forest in search of someone who could help us or at least give us the information we need.

− Crossed the forest? Which one? − Moss asked, startled.

− We came from South-West. We're lucky we managed to find a way to skip the Abandoned Dungeon in between. − Pikachu pointed at the wall of ivy at the other side of the clearing.

− There was no luck: I made that path to easily reach the Mines of Monte Faro. − the Meganium stated, frowning at them. − No pokémon lives in the land beyond Selva Miceta, sans one, and no one usually dares to come down the mountain; so I'll ask only once: where did you come from? − her flowery crest suddenly flared, making the impromptu male team step back, mimicked by the Bayleef.

− We've been kidnapped! − Poccha blurted fearfully, nerves breaching at this last straw that broke the Camerupt's back. The events of the last... Holy Dialga, he had been awake more than 24 hours! Well, it had been a log day for Poccha. Hopefully no one would blame him to be scared by a fully evolved irate mother with a Type advantage. However his statement seemed to halt the threat, because the female Grass Type blinked in astonishment.

− Come again? − she asked disbelieving.

− My friend and I were exploring together, when some Creepy Voice came out of nowhere and dumped us in a hole that released us here. Lizard and his partner were kidnapped in their sleep instead and woke up where we would have landed soon after; Pikachu and his friend got caught into a freaky incident that probably teleported them from who knows where to where we arrived. − the Penguin Pokémon managed to resume all their stories almost in a single breath, leaving him panting in exertion.

− This doesn't make sense... − Moss gaped in disbelief.

− We lived it and we still don't believe it either, trust me. − Pikachu nodded in sympathy, then he turned serious and a bit pleading. − My aibou is wounded and needs either a doctor or someone with healing moves, so can you help us? − he stepped forward, lifting the Specs onto his forehead to look properly in Meganium's eyes.

− Which pokémon is it and what kind of wound? − the mother inquired.

− A Riolu and almost all his back had been burned. − Lizard supplied and that piece of information seemed to change all.

− A Riolu?! This region has lost all of them in the First Wave! How...! Wait. − she paused, recollecting herself for a minute and they let her. − How did you teleport at the others' "kidnapping"-drop spot? − she stared back at the yellow rodent.

− We have no solid idea, but I think it was because of how some supercharged Mega-energy made his aura react. Hadn't been for his untapped potential, Ash could have died, so... can you help us? − the Mouse Pokémon, who had met and almost been smitten by the Creator himself (if what he had said was true), honestly begged for his best friend. Poccha couldn't help but admire him more once again.

The Meganium hesitated, taken aback a bit, but then nodded slightly. − You said that he's your partner? − Pikachu nodded resolutely, but faltered a bit as she lowered her muzzle at his level and sniffed his fur attentively*. − Okay, I believe you a little more now. − she straightened and smiled. − I'll help you and maybe this way we'll discover what happened to the other Riolus too. Where's your camp base?

Poccha sighed, relieved at the positive response. Thankfully their luck was turning around.

− It's in the forest beyond the dungeon... Selva Miceta, was it? − Lizard guessed and she nodded. − We left Ash with my and Poccha's friends to guard and take care of him. Does this mean you can heal him? − he asked hopefully.

− I was blessed with the knowledge of Heal Pulse and Aromatherapy, so I will be able to help him. I had to go there today anyway, so I'll K.O. two Flying Types with a Rock Throw. − the female Grass Type shrugged, then turned to her son. − Can you go and fetch my berry basket? I'll need the full kit just in case.

− On it mom! − Moss ran inside the house, leaving the four alone. The silence stretched a bit awkwardly, till the Meganium perked.

− Oh, where are my manners? My name is Amaryllis, I'm sorry to meet you in such circumstances. − the Herb Pokémon introduced herself and the trio nodded in greeting.

− Likewise. But I have to ask, why were you so hostile? Are there problems with other pokémon in this area? − Poccha dared to ask, then a sudden thought crossed his mind. − By the way do you have a map of this place? We're unfamiliar with the area.

− The latter can be arranged, but... − she paused as she retrieved with a vine a rolled up parchment, which was put inside the basket the Bayleef brought back. − Thanks Moss. The first two, well... It's better if we discuss them along the way. − she pointed with a meaningful glance at her son and the trio understood the message immediately: the child didn't know and she wanted him to stay that way.

− No problem Mrs. Amaryllis. − Lizard agreed aloud and made way for the mother to exit the house.

− Okay Moss, I'm going to heal their friend then I'll go and check on your father too. You keep an eye on your brothers and sister as usual and if anything happens you all go to uncle Nazo, alright? − the Meganium recommended as she stepped out.

− You can count on me, mom! − the Bayleef stood straighter, making the other Grass Type smile.

− Good boy. Shall we go? − she asked the trio who started to lead the way.

− Thanks for your help, Amaryllis-san. − Pikachu told the Herb Pokémon, preferring to walk alongside her.

− Even if I'm just an Esquire, it's my duty to help pokémon in need. − she answered as they entered the dungeon-bypass.

− "Esquire" as in someone who helps a "Knight"? − the Electric Type inquired curiously and she nodded with a beaming smile.

− What is their code? Are they like Exploration Teams? − Poccha asked, encouraged by her new demeanor, though the Meganium seemed surprised at this request.

− How come you know about Exploration and Rescue Teams and not about the Knights that order them? − she replied, confused.

− Where we come from things work differently, it seems. − Lizard hummed thoughtful.

− You were abducted from somewhere else, after all. − the Meganium absently acknowledged, before nodding to herself. − "Knights" is how our Lore calls its members. Each Legendary has higher or lower hierarchy based on one's accomplishments and claimed territory. So yes, in a sense they're like Exploration Teams, but at the same time they differ greatly. In certain circumstances Teams have more skills than what Knights, because here, to order official teams, it's needed the blessing of two or more Legendaries.

− Are Legendaries as reclusive as back home here? − Pikachu suddenly inquired. − I mean, there are the normal people who only hear about legends on Legendaries and never see either a glimpse or a photo of them in all their lives, even if they search for them. − he clarified what he meant as "reclusive".

"Normal people"? So they are not? Poccha slightly gaped at the indirect admission of the Electric Type.

− Usually not as much as yours, if that's your paragon meter. The nests or lairs of each of them are generally of public knowledge; however few try and meet them, because they're in the deepest parts of dungeons. This is why it's such an accomplishment to create a Team: you have to impress positively a couple of Knights. Many pokémon try, but usually just a third of them has the qualities required... − Amaryllis paused in her tale, mood suddenly darkening. − Or, at least, that was the percentage before the First Wave came. Now the Teams that survived either retired or went rogue and no civilian wants to apply anymore. This was part of the why I was so hostile. The pokémon that inhabit Monte Faro are in a state of chaos and they're too dangerous for my children. I hope you'll understand.

B~OwO~F

− We do, Mrs. Amaryllis, you don't have to worry. − Lizard reassured with a small smile, inwardly dreading the meaning behind her words. This "First Wave" thing felt like the event that had altered the dynamics of this region and the Fire Type had the feeling that it was somehow related with the Shadows Suicune had mentioned.

− So, what do Esquires usually do? − thankfully Poccha changed the topic.

− Oh, it's easy, we assist Knights in their duty to protect the dungeons assigned to them by the falling stars. − the Grass Type brightened at the question. − I'm assigned to Aparctias, a Suicune.

The Piplup, beside Lizard, completely froze, while the Mouse Pokémon sharply inhaled. Only the Fire Type managed to just falter in his steps, but by then their reaction had been noticed.

− Is there something wrong? − Amaryllis asked curiously at first, then lacking an immediate answer frowned in command.

− Ah, it's just... that we probably saw him, you know? − Lizard had no idea how his voice managed to come out only slightly strained. Though, better to tell an edited truth now than being found out when she went and checked her Knight. − He seemed... agitated. − they at least thankfully kept walking to their base camp.

The Meganium at this piece of information groaned deeply and quickened her pace. The trio exchanged a worried glance and hurried after her.

− What's the matter Amaryllis-san? − Pikachu trotted on her left as they reached the end of the bypass.

− Even if he's supposed to be the incarnation of the North Wind, he can be a hothead. Above all if he was in the aftermath of a Phase Two Shadow Raid. It wouldn't be the first time he attacked friends and allies because the combo Screech-Flash had disabled him. − she sighed, halting her race to turn toward the Electric Type. − You have the Specs, can you guide us to your base camp?

− On it! − with a quick head jerk the glasses fell on his nose and he scanned the woods. − Found them! ...Have either of you ever met a Feraligatr? − the non-sequitur question made the explorers and Esquire blink, but none less all of them hummed in assent.

− Yes, why? − Poccha voiced their inquiry.

− Because either Fang evolved twice or there's a big pokémon in our camp. − Pikachu tilted his head sideways. − Ah, no wait, I can count three little shapes besides the big one, it's not Fang.

Wait, there's only one pokémon as big as a Feraligatr that could be in that direction standing to Amaryllis's words! Lizard instantly panicked as Poccha probably reached the same conclusion, judging by his expression. And even if it isn't him...!

− "Big pokémon"? − Amaryllis demanded, then glared sharply at the yellow rodent. − Lead the way.

Pikachu complied, still a bit confused but alert, and the group ran across the woods; the Meganium steadily took the lead once understood the right direction, then suddenly her footsteps halted after jumping inside a bush.

Cradling his tail flame to avoid setting fire to the plants, the Charmander followed her as quickly, coming upon the scene Pikachu had seen through the Specs at the same as his companions.

− ...What have you done... − the Grass Type whispered in horror, looking at the camp.

Not that Lizard could have blamed her: Fang and Rush were gathered on the sleeping bag beside a now conscious sitting up Ash on the part nearer the opening of the root-cove; all three of them seemed to be pale and slightly shacking. Why? Well, the cause could be related to the almost two quintals of Legendary pokémon laying sprawled in an undignified heap not far from the head of the sleeping bag.

− A rescue mission! You guys have no Holy Uxie of an idea of what we went through! − Rush puffed her feathers defensively.

− We ran out of Reviver Seeds as soon as things got crazy serious and Suicune made us muzzleplant on the wall of his "super secret chamber" which entrance we either missed or it just didn't open! − Oh boy, Fang's usual well hidden snark had surfaced. Things had really gone Zubat-shish crazy, then. − We barely escaped with Suicune thanks to our badges, which thank Rayquaza still work by the way, because the Escape Orb couldn't function either!

− What do you mean that the Chamber didn't open?! − Amaryllis screeched.

− That the moment before we were Surfing towards the supposed escape in the wall, then next we were revived since we had been splatted against the rock! − Fang snapped back defensively.

− That's impossible! − the Meganium's crest flared and Poccha yelped in alarm and promptly hid behind Lizard, who would have done the same if the angered mother had been a Water or Rock Type. − The Embleteora never fails!

− Then probably he just missed the entrance! Not that the real reason matters anyway, in that moment we couldn't certainly haul Suicune all the way up the wall. He was a little too unconscious. − Rush added her two pokéyen dryly.

− But he couldn't just leave the dungeon! That's why the Chamber was made! − the Grass Type stepped dangerously towards the girls, who answered the threat by bolting up and shielding Ash, who had an overwhelmed look on his muzzle.

This won't end well... Lizard's dread skyrocketed at the scene; however before it could escalate further, a yellow blur leapt between the two parties.

X~OwO~Y

STOP! − Pikachu yelled, each paw extended to the contenders and cheeks briefly sparkling in warning. He was really grateful of all the years of experience in "pace-making" that he had gained in their travels. He lifted the Specs to his forehead and sent a glare to the mother. − There's no need to fight. Amaryllis-san, we have no idea of what is wrong, but if you just yell at each other we won't understand any of this. − he turned his head to the girls with equal severity, making them almost flinch. − And you don't have to be so hostile and defensive. Start from the beginning: what happened and why is Suicune here?

− ...It's my fault. − Before any of them could answer, Ash had piped up, making everyone turn towards him. − I felt... something wrong... and asked them... to go and save... Suicune. − now that Rush and Fang had moved away to let them see him, his best friend looked more ill than before their departure. A tiny whimper of concern rose in Pikachu's throat, but he resisted the urge to go and fuss over him; at least till the short-fuse situation stopped threatening to explode.

− We accepted the mission and ran to Spiral Dungeon to check. − Fang picked up the narration. − Ash was right: there were some... things that were attacking and overwhelming Suicune. They had the shapes of pokémon but were all black and polygonal. When a Nincada-lookalike attacked me, I Water Pulsed it and it busted in a cloud of dust. − she shuddered.

− Shadows. − Amaryllis breathed in horrified realization.

− Yeah, I think that Suicune at some point called them that. − Rush nodded. − Anyway, we fought our way to him and tried to cover his sides at the best we could, but after two spent Reviver Seeds, things got bad. The Shadows we were fighting vanished, but others, more powerful looking, showed up. We tried to run for the Chamber Suicune mentioned, but...

− You went "splat". − Lizard quoted in a cringe that the girls mirrored as they nodded.

− We were out of Revivers then. We were cornered and there were these tire-like things that I believe were Bug Types, because they had two couples of antennas and could toxic us from afar like it was nothing and... − Rush's description sounded familiar, so Pikachu blurted his first thought.

− Whirlipede? − at the bewildered stares of the explorers (but recognition in Ash and Amaryllis' cases) he elaborated. − The tire-like things. They attack by Rolling Out and used others Poison Types moves too, right? − the duo nodded. − They were probably those species then. You guessed right, they are Bug-Poison Types and I can see why they were a threat: they're pretty fast. What happened next? − he prodded.

Senpai's idea saved us. − the Torchic promptly answered. − She remembered that beside Exploration, we're also Rescue Teams. − she plucked her badge from under her bandana and waved it awkwardly with her beak before tucking it away. − Luckily the badges had registered Ash's plea as an effective Mission, so we managed to use the command "Recover and Escape" to teleport back here.

Fang seemed to blush at the praise, but then got serious. − Whatever those Shadows were, we've been very lucky that we got out.

Pikachu sighed in relief at the escaped danger, so he looked more at ease to the Meganium. − Amaryllis-san, what is the problem then? They did save Suicune.

The Herb Pokémon's head was hanging low, slightly lolling to the sides. After a beat she looked up at them, a thankful but defeated expression on her muzzle. − I'm... grateful for your help, but the whole point of Aparctias never leaving the dungeon is because of something he has to protect that cannot exit. − she looked at the Water Beast. − However it's better if the actual Knight explains it instead of his Esquire.

The Grass Type crossed the camp and settled beside the Suicune, laying down while the girls still looked at her warily. In the meantime Poccha and Lizard had joined them and were silently scanning their partners from afar to check for any serious injury.

Pikachu waited till he was sure that Amaryllis was calm enough to be trusted, then finally reached his aibou. He really was sicker than before and if the damp patch of earth beside the sleeping bag was of any indication, he had gained another symptom.

As soon as Pikachu came in reach, Ash purposefully leaned forward and the Electric Type met him halfway, letting his friend's burning forehead rest on his shoulder. The yellow rodent resisted the urge to do the same as instead he looked over Ash's shoulder to stare at the Herb Pokémon. − Amaryllis-san, can you also heal Ash's burn with your Aromatherapy?

The Meganium gave a sniff to her Knight and grimaced, then looked up at them. − I'll heal them both at the same time, he's poisoned. − she nodded in the Legendary's direction, then straightened and deeply inhaled as her white-rose petal crest vibrated, releasing a sweet and gentle cloud of pollen. They all breathed it in, savoring the healing effect and some tension faded away.

Pikachu observed as Fang took upon herself to check the progress of Ash's back, removing the dried mush and smiling satisfied after a couple of minutes when the Meganium paused the move to pick up a Leppa Berry to replenish the strength of her pollen. At that point the Mouse Pokémon felt relaxed enough to pet his trainer's nape, making him do a rumble similar to a purr. − You okay now?

The ex-human sighed half-heartily and rubbed his forehead against the yellow fur, ruffling it. − Just a lasting bit of nausea and dizziness. ...But it doesn't hurt anymore. − he confirmed in a whisper.

All the remaining tension flooded away from Pikachu's frame and finally he buried his muzzle in his aibou's shoulder.

− Riolu, I'll give you a flash of Heal Pulse to jump-start your recovery, before focusing on Aparctias. − Ash blinked noctowlishly at the address, before remembering that he had turned into one. He looked up at the Grass Type and grinned a bit mareepishly.

− Thank you Amaryllis-san, but you should do Suicune first. I feel already better and an Oran berry will be enough, no need to worry. − even if he didn't know well the other pokémon yet, he could feel their disbelieving gaze on his back. − I'm not joking, really!

− Ash, sorry if I don't believe you after witnessing you puke your guts out soon after our arrival. − Rush deadpanned, making him wince as Pikachu disentangled himself from the hug to glare at him.

− "My guts out" is a little too extreme. − the boy tried not to pout as he carefully turned to face the others in seiza and his partner flanked him automatically. − Besides, it wasn't my fault! Whatever I felt wrong got so angry that made sick! Now it's gone, so the nausea is already going away. − he justified truthfully.

Fang put a paw on his forehead and hummed appreciatively, stepping back. − Well, the fever is gone as well as his burn... He could wait five minutes since now Aparctias is more urgent...

Amaryllis eyed the Fighting Type and nodded in agreement with Fang's assessment. − Alright. − she turned to the Legendary and pointed her antennas towards him, letting out from their tips pinkish waves that covered him. − Riolu, can I ask you something in the meanwhile?

The pokémon trainer perked, still unused to that appellation, but readily answered. − Sure, you can call me Ash though.

She smiled a bit, amused by his straightforwardness (probably), never stopping the Heal Pulse. − Can you describe what happened before asking the girls to save Aparctias?

Ash frowned in thought and shifted his stance to sit cross-legged. Like a clockwork Pikachu wormed his way onto his lap and the ex-human had to lift his new muzzle a bit, so it could rest on the top of the Electric Type's head who faced the group. It was a bit awkward, but not uncomfortable. − I can't describe the feeling anything else than wrongness. It ran underground and spawned there, − he pointed in the adult's direction, probably where "Spiral Dungeon" was, − and there: it was near where Pikachu, Lizard and Poccha's aura crossed the limit of where I can sense, I think. − he pointed in the other direction and sudden horror spiked near him. Startled Ash turned towards its source and found a blanched Piplup.

− You mean... − the others mirrored Ash's action as Poccha turned even more white than blue. − That we skipped Selva Miceta just before it got invaded by the Shadows?

− Welllll... not exactly... − Amaryllis trailed uncomfortably and worry pooled in all six of them. − There would have been no combat. − they tensed at the ominous way she said it. − You would have been directly swallowed by the Darkness Riptide.

− The what?! − Poccha squeaked high-pitched.

− Each time a Shadow Raid surges, a Riptide of black sand swipes away anyone who's inside a dungeon that has been conquered by the Shadows; it's similar to the Mysterious Wind, but instead of throwing you out, you're never to be seen again. That's why Selva Miceta is sealed by ivy. Aparctias was protecting the Mines of Monte Faro from being subjected by the same fate, however... I don't know what happens now since he had been rescued, he never went into details of this kind of situation with me. − the Grass Type explained.

− How much till he wakes up? − Lizard voiced the question in everyone's mind.

− I'm almost done, just a couple of minutes. − Amaryllis diagnosed.

− ...You mentioned the First Wave, madam. When and what happened? − the male Fire Type attempted to keep conversation on.

The Meganium sighed and pointed them all a small glare. − Only if you promise to tell us who you really are and where you come from. You're Exploration and Rescue Teams, but know nothing about Knights and Shadows. Plus that Riolu is too old to be one of our lost ones. − she pointed to Ash, who blinked confused and alarmed.

− You lost Riolu? − he blurted, earning a light swat on the muzzle from Pikachu's ear. − Sorry.

− And all the Lucario too. Six months ago, on a new Moon evening, tendrils of black sand shot out of nowhere from the floor of all the dungeons. The more unfortunate and low level pokémon got swallowed by them and that was the fate of most of our Riolu and their parents, who tried to save them. They were all training in a dungeon, however they were too far from the entrance to try and escape by foot. − Amaryllis sighed defeated. − We know about their fate only because a Cutiefly was small and fast enough to avoid the Darkness and escape the dungeon.

− A what? − Fang asked confused.

− It's a Bug-Fairy Type no bigger than a Sitrus berry with small wings; they're agile enough to fly, but unfortunately too small to carry heavy weights. − the Meganium grimaced. − Anyway, it saw their abduction and the attempt of a gamble: one of the fathers was a Psychic Type so in a last desperate attempt to save whoever was left, he "spirited away" them by Teleport. We still don't know where they landed, but since then Antro Dojo is a Forsaken Dungeon like Selva Miceta. − she paused. − Something similar happened all over the region and dozens of dungeons have become dangerous, prompting several pokémon to act more aggressively. One of the most extreme cases is Monte Faro itself, so that's why I was so suspicious of you three. − she added apologetically.

− I think we can all understand that. − Fang assured and they all nodded in assent. − It's difficult not to go in a defense-mode if dungeons have become dangerous. Though, I still don't understand why Aparctias would stay constantly in one of them.

− Ask him yourself, I think he's waking up. − the Meganium cut down the Heal Pulse as the Legendary groaned and shifted.

− What happened? − the Suicune grumbled and if Ash concentrated enough he could perceive his concealed confusion and disgruntledness.

− Sir Aparctias, do you remember the Shadows' attack? − Lizard carefully asked, since no one else seemed eager to answer the Water Beast's question.

− Which Sh-... I am not in min dungeon. − the Aurora Pokémon startled in a proper laying position and tensed, ready to spring, as his eyes darted around wildly, only to settle on a resigned Meganium. − ...Amaryllis?

− I'm sorry sir, the rescue had already taken place once I arrived here. − she apologized, but then she took a deep breath and assumed a resolute if resigned attitude. − However, it hadn't been for these two young pokémon, you would have been taken. They told me that they covered your back even after the Raid had been updated to Phase Two. − she pointed with a vine at Fang and Rush, who fidgeted at the Aurora Pokémon's attention focusing on them.

− I see... − he hummed and nodded, observing better the group, before Ash literally felt an epiphany dawn on the incarnation of the North Wind. − It was you! You were the ones who defeated me and left me unable to recover from the Shadow Raid you "saved" me from!

Before Amaryllis could even start to get angry, a torch of fury lit up from the previously only "fiery" aura. − And we've already told you that we had tried to reason with you the first time we met, but you kept trying to erase us! − Rush snapped, barely restrained by Poccha. − And then while we were trying to save your despondent ass, you kept distrusting us despite we were doing everything in our power to help!

Before the Suicune could reply, a stone calm voice interjected, freezing them all. − Aparctias? Are they really hinting that you attacked some Rescue Teams because you had been disabled again by a Phase Two Raid and got your pelt handed to you? Twice? − Amaryllis's voice had slowly gained a sweet tone that felt somehow familiar because instinctively the fur on Ash's nape stood to an end.

− Uhhhh... − the Legendary looked away uncomfortably, as if searching for an answer.

− And now that you're out with your Embletaora unclaimed, you're gonna suffer from the Blight? − her tone now was edging towards hysterical angry. − Are they hinting all of that?

− ...Perhaps? − Aparctias tentatively answered, subtly edging away from her and burrowing himself in the roots behind him.

− Excuse me? Before you maul your Knight, could you give us the full picture? − Fang intervened, trying to defuse a little the situation.

− Right. − the Meganium nodded curtly in their direction then turned to stare hard at the Water Beast, masking the deep dread she was feeling with cold wrath. − They're probably foreign teams, so they need details about the Embleteore System and what it has to do with the Darkness. Talk fast.

− Yes madam! − the Aurora Pokémon yelped into attention and turned to the six, trying to recollect himself. − Since ancient times, the members of the Lore felt compelled to achieve great deeds to gain the favor and the respect of the pokémon living in this region. However the Knights' Order was born when from the sky fell what afterwards were called Embleteore: rocks rich in both energy and aura.

− Meteorites. − Poccha breathed in wonder and a bit of something the ex-human boy couldn't place. Anyway at the word, Ash felt a shudder pass in both Fang's and Lizard's emotions, while he and Pikachu grimaced, making him dismiss the Piplup's strange emotion. The duo from the human world could relate to the fear of having burning projectiles trying to crush you, but, while probably Team Bitefire hadn't experienced firsthand Arceus's Judgment, something similar had happened.

− Indeed. At this time we still do not know where they came, however their possession meant great prestige since they were and still are extremely rare. − He paused, either to muse on what to say next or to create suspense. − However prestige comes with a price: once they enter in a dungeon, a sort of a curse is triggered within the Embleteora. Whoever brings it out again is hit by a Blight that manifests itself in mortal or extremely disabling incidents or illnesses. It is still not known how to cure such Blight, however its prevention is.

− ...What exactly? − Poccha asked with a slight quiver in his voice that made Rush alarm while the Riolu frowned and turned to look at the penguin. His emotions were all scrambled, but the previous one that Ash had felt was finally identified as foreboding.

− The possession of an Exploration and Rescue Team badge. The pokémon who brings the Embleteora out has to carry one and be its legitimate owner. We Knights are yet to find its reason, but that encouraged min predecessors to appoint several E&R Teams once the Embleteore's hidden power, their true purpose probably, was discovered. If a certain process is undertaken, the meteorite can become either a Mega Stone or a Keystone, depending on who brought it out. Once the transformation has taken place, the curse no longer activates. − Aparctias explained, ignorant of the effect his words had on the Penguin Pokémon.

P~OwO~W

− So, just to be sure... − Poccha felt like crying in relief as he fumbled with his Special Band bowtie to take out the iridescent rock fragment. − Does an Embleteora look like this? − he extended his wing with the shard towards the Suicune who leaned forward to look better at it.

− ...This is mine. I had it embedded in the lowest angle of min crest. It was needed as a key to open the Secret Chamber! − Aparctias jumped up and towered on him. − How do thou have it?

− I found it on the ground and it seemed some kind of treasure! I wanted to study it afterwards! − he squeaked, but stood his ground.

How did it end there?! − the Suicune almost Roared to intimidate him, but his partner half stepped in between of them protectively, feathers ruffled so much that she looked twice her size.

− You said that it was on your crest, so... something must have hit you pretty hard to dislodge it if nothing had managed that feat before... − Fang tried to reason to quell the atmosphere.

A sharp intake of air switched the group attention from her to the Mouse Pokémon, who looked distressed. − ...I headbutted him with a Volt Tackle? − this sounded more like a question that a statement, but he managed to figuratively hit the ground running with: − Hey, he had just injured Ash more with a Surf! I had every right to be angry! − Pikachu gestured helplessly while his friend patted his head reassuringly.

− "Injured" as in "his back already been burn into a crisp" injured? − Amaryllis growled towards the Legendary.

− Not to add insult to injury, but the burn before was even worse. − Rush seemed almost eager to throw the Suicune under the metaphorical Tauros stampede, so Poccha gave her a small glare that was replied with a too innocent look.

− Guys, stop making the situation worse for Aparctias! It was just a misunderstanding, please let it go. − Ash called them all out, with a bit of an exasperated tone. − It can happen during a battle to lose focus and it's not the first time that I've been injured, so no need to worry now that I'm healed. Shouldn't we just be happy that Suicune hadn't been either taken or cursed?

There was a mareepish exchange of glances as Amaryllis sighed, appearing already exhausted.

− ...I acknowledge the fact that what thou did was a good deed. I had not noticed the disappearance of min Embleteora before now, thus the Shadows would have taken it if had not been for thee. − the Aurora Pokémon had composed himself in the meanwhile and nodded to the Piplup. − I infer that min Esquire has already told you something about the Shadows.

− Yes, she told us when they attacked, about the Riptide, what happens in the Forsaken Dungeons and the disappearance of Riolu and Lucario. − Lizard resumed readily. − Is the Mines of Monte Faro dungeon lost now?

− Not completely. Since min Embleteora had been legitimately liberated and I have not been carried away by the Shadows, the Darkness Riptide will swipe the dungeon only if I am not present within its walls. It had been noticed that the presence of either a Knight or an unclaimed Embleteora inside a dungeon disrupts the Riptides into Shadows. This is how me and min associates survived until now. − Aparctias explained. − If both of us had been taken, then the Mines would have become a Forsaken Dungeon.

− I understand that the Blight prevented you to take out the Embleteora and leaving it there wasn't an option either, but why hadn't you asked a Rescue Team to aid you? It's our job after all. − Fang pointed out, making him, Pikachu and Lizard frown. Shouldn't she... Oh, she hadn't been there when Amaryllis had explained.

− Not all Knights are open to let go of the symbol of the ownership of the dungeon they reside in. − the Suicune admitted dejectedly. − However those who are did not get the chance due to the disappearance of most of the Teams in the First Wave. Whoever is left is ether too scared to answer their call or has gone rogue and does not want to risk their own safety.

− I guess that no civilian is too eager to try and create new teams, isn't it? − Rush's feathers had finally settled, but she was still half covering him from the Water Beast. Silly partner, she had a Type disadvantage but still wanted to protect him.

− Indeed not. This is why Byakko, the News Bearer, sent word through his Pidgeot Mail to the Knights who wanted help that a plan was being undertaken and to be prepared to... uh. − Aparctias suddenly fell silent, paling a bit. − ...You six are part of a Rescue Team? − he asked before they could question him, probably rhetorically since Amaryllis had told him they were.

− To be honest only me, Lizard, Rush and Poccha are. − the Totodile pointed to each one as she said their name. − By the way, I'm Fang and with Lizard we are Team Bitefire.

− Poccha and I are Team Purplewing. − the Torchic precised. − Ash and Pikachu... − she trailed unsure.

− We got warped to where their kidnapper dropped them. We aren't a Rescue Team. − the Mouse Pokémon continued apologetically.

− What do thou mean with "warped"? − the Legendary seemed puzzled. − He isn't one of our Riolu, I met all of them once before the First Wave, thus he couldn't have been included into Houdini's Teleport.

− I was menaing to ask before: who are Byakko and Houdini? You kinda lost me at the Pidgeot Mail. − Poccha asked completely befuddled.

− Among the deeds the Knights do, the current Landorus named Byakko instituted a mail service for Knights and their Esquires to keep us in touch with each other. The Pidgeot assigned to us is called Libeccio. − Aparctias paused as Ash stretched towards his backpack and fumbled a bit, retrieving the Pokédex. − What are thou doing?

− I noticed that they aren't familiar with pokémon of certain regions, so we'll search for them to show them their appearance. − the Riolu straightened and left the device on Pikachu's lap, letting the rodent search for him. − You can go on, Aparctias-san.

− ...As for Houdini, he was an Alakazam and the father of one of the lost Riolu. Given how he was part of a Rescue Team and bearer of an Alakazite, he was also the one who Teleported away part of the kits. − the Suicune just blinked at the antic and went on. At the shared look between the Teams, they had understood the purpose behind Ash's actions. − We still do not know anything about their fate. Let us go back to your story instead: what happened to you two?

Ash hugged a bit tighter his best friend, as an uncomfortable expression painted his muzzle. − I lost part of my memory during the incident that sent us here, apparently. Pikachu told us that I shielded him from an attack empowered by Mega energy, but unfortunately I don't remember it.

− You got covered by sparks that weren't made of electricity, perhaps manifestation of your aura that flared after you had blacked out; in the blinding light I probably fainted too. − the Electric Type continued the explanation as he swiped the list on the device. − Here, this is a Landorus in his Incarnate Form, − Pikachu then turned the Pokédex with the image of said pokémon and the four nodded in thanks, − and this is the Therian Form. He's a Ground-Flying Type and he's the leader of the Force of Nature trio, which other members are Tornadus and Thundurus. − he added, swiping to show all the pokémon named.

The Therian Forms look waaay more majestic and intimidating than the Incarnate ones. Poccha thought in wonder.

− Their names are respectively Suzaku and Seiryuu. They preside a dungeon each at the feet of Vulcano Fornace, where there is the headquarters of the Pidgeot Mail service, along with Byakko. − Amaryllis finally joined the conversation taking out the map of the region. She distended it in the ground and the six shifted to take a better look.

The land had the shape of a broken helix or a weir "S"** with two diamonds in the middle of the sea, one on each side of the region, probably islands or archipelagos. In the middle of the hollow "S" there were three peninsulas and the middle one, the longest, had a large volcano overlooking the sea. Probably it was "Vulcano Fornace" and the one Pikachu had sighted early this morning.

− This is where we are. − the Meganium pointed with a vine at the south point, near where a high mountain with a shining peak stood. − That is Monte Faro and going north there's Collina Fucina and Scogliera Calcedonio. Their dungeons are protected each by a Legendary Beast.

− An Entei and a Raikou then? − Lizard looked up at the Esquire who nodded.

− Hekla and Veena, min sisters. − Aparctias sighed fondly. − Now that I am free I could go and visit them... Well, I will think about it later; now back on the main discussion: I have a suspicion about Byakko's plan, however I would like to be sure of it before speaking about it aloud, thus I will wait for Libeccio's return. Until that moment you all are our guests. You can pack your things and follow us to our home.

Startled by this sudden change, Poccha spluttered. − What about this Embleteora?

− It's yours now. You earned it when you all defeated my dumb Knight. This was his intention anyway since the start, so don't feel bad about it. − Amaryllis reassured him as the others started to pack. Pikachu put away the Pokédex while Ash tried carefully to stand and managed so without too much problems. − You little reckless Riolu are going to stay put until I Heal Pulse you, or so help me! You are twice worse than Anemone! − she scolded, pushing him back down (on bare ground so they could roll up the sleeping bag) and getting a mareepish expression in return.

Still a bit uncertainly, Poccha put the shard back inside his bowtie, but catching a smiling and approving Rush beaming beside him, made him feel a bit better.

The dismantling of the camp was a quick work and lasted just enough to get Ash healed by the Herb Pokémon, who insisted in carrying his backpack till they had reached the house in the meadow even if he had protested that he could now walk just fine.

Hoping to find more answers, the six, the Knight and his Esquire departed to the latter's home.

SAVED.

* Since we've already established the Riolu/Lucario (Aura Adept) characteristics while Ash was still human, his "human" scent is also similar to that evolutive line. This way Amaryllis (who has never met a human obviously) mistook the lingering scent on Pikachu's fur as a "full" Riolu's instead of a mix of the two.

** For visual reference, the region looks similar to the Mega Evolution symbol on the cover of this fanfic, minus the rainbow coloration and with some missing parts that had been eroded by the ocean.

A/N. Sorry for the attempt of begin of worldbuilding and the rushed ending, but I wanted this finished for the fanfic anniversary and I'm already a bit late! Dx (It's 2 AM an something as I'm writing this, sorry for the typos along the way. I tried to edit a bit 5 hours later, but probably I missed something anyway.)

Also I could be counted as late for the release date of Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee, but who really cares about them (and I play Pokémon GO so I'm not against filler-filler games) when on December 7th on Switch SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE IS BEING RELEASED?! (sorry for the caps lock, I got a bit overexcited xD)

Now that Ash is feeling better and the major threats have ended, the six will probably have time to relax? Who knows, next chapter will probably solve some other mysteries and be ready soonish, so... Please understand xD.

If anything wasn't clear, please feel free to ask in the reviews, I love reading your opinion!

(BMW, a friend of mine pointed out the the "splat" in last chapter was extremely cliché... I apologise for this shameful occurrence! *dramatically sobs*)

Hope you liked the chapter and type ya soon!
