Quest 001

As the eight pokémon walked towards their destination, now that he wasn't injured anymore Ash found himself testing his newfound muscles and additional appendice: having a tail felt foreign and while there were moments when he forgot about it (just because he was focusing on something else that had distracted him, mind you), the way his balance was affected immediately served as a reminder.

Now that no one was dragging him along, he had to adjust his balance every dozen of steps and certainly the wood terrain wasn't helping him in his endeavor. He had stumbled at least four times before reaching the bypass Amaryllis had mentioned during their walk and each time his aibou had caught him seamlessly, even if the Mouse Pokémon was a head and a bit shorter than him.

− Sorry. − he apologized again at the umpteenth stumble.

− Don't worry, you've just healed! − Amaryllis intervened, trying to reassure him, as they stepped inside the tunnel beside the dungeon.

− It's not that, I recovered from things probably worse that this in a matter of minutes some times, it's just... − Ash adjusted his stance and the foreign appendices waved slightly, making him sway but not fall. − The tail! − he gestured helplessly.

Rush had the nerve to snort and, while Fang snickered, the Totodile also patted sympathetically his shoulder. − I know that feeling. − she nodded sagely.

− I think that you two got away easily, though. You still have paws at least. − the Torchic waved her stubby wings in protest.

− Then why don't you evolve? Combusken have claws at least. − Lizard observed. Both she and Poccha deflated, sulking.

− Can't. We mentioned that we had shenanigans with Lord Dialga, right? − the Piplup asked, making the Riolu perk. When had they said that?¹* − We had a brief disagreement with Lord Palkia too, but after clearing the misunderstanding, he said that we had a minor "spatial distortion" placed on that prevents us from evolving. He said that he would work on it, but since we're who knows where... − he trailed with a sigh. During that statement three auras shifted in confusion, forewarning Ash about who was about to speak.

− Now just wait a second. − the Meganium interrupted, as they kept walking in the bypass. − You met two of the Mighty Knights? Someone who is so reclusive that practically only their own Esquires and underlings and the High Knights had met longer than few minutes? − she gaped. Team Purplewing exchanged glances, then shrugged and nodded at her. − When and where?

− Lord Dialga was somewhere along six months ago, I think. − Rush looked at her teammate who nodded. − We met him at Temporal Tower dungeon in the Hidden Lands, while Lord Palkia was in the Spatial Rift dungeon, three or four months ago. Since we're talking about the Creation Trio, we should probably mention that when we were kidnapped we were on our way to issue a duel with Lord Giratina for the possession of the Rock Horn at World Abyss dungeon. − she explained, but at all these pieces of information Amaryllis's and Aparctias's progression in the bypass finally seemed to come to a halt.

− It does not match with what happened here. Libeccio told us that after the First Wave Ponente, one of the Pidgeot, went missing, so the communications were cut. Then, after a week of relentlessly Raids, the only news that reached Byakko was that all the four Knights that inhabit Isola Insomnia had carried their Embleteore out the dungeons and vanished. However, the News Bearer conjectures that the appearance of a new dungeon on Vulcano Fucina in the same timeframe is somehow related. Although, the theory can not still be confirmed due to the impossibility to access it. − the Suicune elucidated further.

− Since we're talking about things that don't match... − Pikachu picked up before anyone else could intervene. − Our Palkia and Giratina are Ladies.

− Really? I didn't notice. − Ash asked in the following stunned silence.

− They didn't exactly parade it, you know? − his aibou pointed out, gesturing to all of him to make him understand. And he did: while he had been human, he had had a hard time to tell males from females without evident somatic differences between the two. He nodded in acknowledgement.

− How is it even possible? Legendaries or not, I've never heard of pokémon who can be of both genders if they have one!²* − Poccha was flabbergasted.

− You forgot to mention being at different places at the same time! The Mighty Knights' dungeons aren't even called by those names. − Amaryllis intervened equally baffled.

− ...I may have a hunch. Ash do you remember the Reflection Cave incident? − the Mouse Pokémon looked up at him, so said boy put a paw on his chin to think.

The name itself didn't tell him anything, but going by deduction it should have been a cave with reflective surfaces, so... Pikachu had gone through a shimmering rock once and he had jumped after him, then the place on the other side had strange colors and odd familiar pokémon...

− Were there a mischievous Pikachu and a cowardly Hawlucha? − Ash glanced at his best friend who beamed.

− Yes! They were a mirror version of me and our nàkama. He's a Fighting-Flying Type. − he specified to the Teams, who nodded in thanks.

− What is this incident importance at this moment? − the Suicune inquired, a bit annoyed.

− It matters because that time we fell into a mirror world, a parallel dimension where things were the opposite of what we knew. Ash's counterpart was a crybaby and mine was mischievous. − the Electric Type explained resolutely. He turned to the Teams. − A quick question: evidently you already knew about humans, but do they exist in your world?

− They're legends, almost fairy tales, no one, probably even the oldest Legendaries had never seen one in person. Is it the same here? − Lizard looked questionably at Knight and Esquire.

− It is. Why do you call them up? − Amaryllis seemed still lost.

− Because, before teleporting, we were in a world where we coexist with humans everywhere. There is almost no landmass without them and a region as big as the one drawn in that map would surely have already been discovered by them. − Pikachu pointed to the map in Meganium's luggage. − However since it hadn't and humans are fairy tales... If there are parallel dimensions, why shouldn't alternative dimension where there are mystery dungeons exist too? − he concluded, leaving all of them to muse.

− ...It makes sense, Gardevoir did say that I was chosen from somewhere else. − Fang looked at her partner with a meaningful glance that made him lit up in understanding.

− And it solves even the question about the different gender and ubiquity of the Creation Trio: for every dimension there is its time, space and reverse world! − Rush reached her epiphany.

− Though since you never heard about the Meteorite accident and we know nothing about the Time Gears affair, we don't belong to the same dimension either. − Lizard pointed out to Poccha, who agreed enthusiastically. Uh, so Ash had been right about the "falling rocks emotional trauma" of Team Bitefire.

− So we six are dimensional travelers? − the Riolu summed, just to be sure to have understood correctly.

− Yep, we're also in someone's else world. − Fang added. − Of course this theory can only be confirmed by one of your Mighty Knights, but until we find them... − she sighed.

− We should probably search for them anyway if we want to go back home. They're the only pokémon I can think capable of such feat. − Poccha observed.

− If what Byakko suspects is also true, you should head to Vulcano Fucina after you have rested. Nevertheless, even before discovering your need to find the Mighty Knights I would have suggested to reach that place: the News Bearer is the one who is the most informed about the events happening in this region. He would be able to aid you. − Aparctias stated, his emotion whirling around like a rebellious dust devil, which couldn't decide on which feeling settle.

Not that Ash could blame the Legendary, he himself was still reeling from the fact that he was able to tell that the Suicune was feeling that way. Moreover, since he had been healed, his brain wasn't fuzzed so much to smother a low constant "buzz" in the back of his head anymore. So when Ash had tried to concentrate on it in the moments of silence during the walk in the forest (when he hadn't been stumbling), he had noticed that it held the emotions of all the pokémon around him, like a background orchestral medley. Each pokémon was like an individual instrument with its own score that reflected their feelings: anger and rage were intense and loud, fear and terror discorded and screeched, happiness was a pleasurable allegro. The Riolu couldn't still tell which pokémon was which instrument, but he could bet that within the day he would be able to identify them.

− Thank you for your suggestion Aparctias-san. − Pikachu interrupted his train of thought, making him focus back on the conversation. − We'll have to copy your map then. Maybe with two Exploration Teams we won't get lost this time! − he teased the trainer with an impish grin.

− Hah har, very funny. − Ash replied, folding his arms.

− It's true! Once you managed to get lost even in the woods surrounding your town! − Pikachu shot back.

− It was dark and Noctowl was pranking me! − he defended embarrassed.

− Excuuuses! − the yellow rodent sing-sang, making him mock-growl. After all, he could sense his best friend's hidden playfulness, so he knew it was just an act. − As a matter of fact, there was also that time when...

− Now com'on here! − the Fighting Type pounced, or at least tried to because the yellow rodent jumped back, sticking his tongue out, and started running towards the exit of the bypass, chased by the Riolu, both of them grinning.

~OwO~

− If I hadn't seen him sitting feverish and burnt, I would have never guessed that Ash had been injured at all. − Amaryllis murmured awed, as the group followed the duo at a more sedated pace. Though, Esquire and Knight had stayed a few meters at the back in order to converse more privately.

− Riolu are resilient pokémon, it is not quite surprising. − Aparctias answered beside her.

− But they are still so young! − the Water Beast caught the undertone hidden in his Esquire's quiet statement and sighed.

− Are there alternatives? Besides, it is within their right to refuse since they did not have any say in the matter. − he reasoned equally quietly.

− They don't strike me as the type to shy away from helping people. − she argued back, watching as in the meadow outside their home Pikachu let the Riolu tackle him and mock-brawl on the grass. They were just like Anemone and Ginkgo and that made her inwardly groan: if the six were going to travel together to Vulcano Fucina, the Teams were going to have a loooong way to go.

− I hope that Anemone and Ginkgo would not take inspiration from them. That is quite rough. − Aparctias grumbled at a normal volume, voicing part of her thoughts, as Ash and Pikachu were rolling on the ground.

− You think so? − the Torchic asked surprised as they finally walked into the meadow.

− Don't blame him, Ash is tickling Pikachu to death. − Fang scolded the Chick Pokémon in a solemn (if fake) seriousness. Then she snorted, eliciting a laugh in the other girl, a snicker from the Charmander and a groan from the Piplup.

A few meters from them, the "brawling" duo on the grass perked and looked up at them curiously, tilting even their head in the same direction to look at them, ignorant of the grass blades on them. Amaryllis couldn't help but smile at their ridiculously adorableness.

− Mom? − the cottage door creaked open and Moss peered at them, only to startle at the presence of Aparctias. − Father?!

There was a loud scramble and the door burst open completely out, making their children tumble out, one on top of another, with unfortunately Fern almost at the bottom. In their eagerness, the pile of three Chikorita and a Bayleef quickly dispersed while the Knight and Esquire met halfway their offsprings.

A mixed chorus of "Father!" and one "Pops!" met them, along with a tangle of vines, which tried to embrace the Legendary who relished such welcome.

Amaryllis enjoyed the sight with a smile: even if what they were about to ask was unfair, at least something good had already been done if they would (unlikely) refuse.

B~OwO~F

− F-father? − Poccha gaped as the tangle around the Suicune tangled even more.

− Well... Mrs. Amaryllis did say that she was going to check on their father... Then that the only pokémon who lived in the woods where we were camping was sir Aparctias, so... − Lizard trailed equally baffled.

− What's the matter? − Ash instead asked curiously, standing up after releasing Pikachu from his hold. The Electric Type shook himself like a wet Mightyena, prompting his friend to step aside to swipe the grass from himself.

− "What's the matter?" Ash, it's unheard that Legendaries ever had children! − the Charmander tried to reason with the ex human in a shout-whisper. Was the nonchalance born from the partial memory loss? No, Fang hadn't been so calm when she discovered certain things.

− Oh! Well, maybe in your dimension they hadn't just had the chance. − Ash turned to look at Pikachu, who perked automatically in response. − Did we meet a Lugia and her baby once? − he asked unsure.

To the male Fire Type, the Mouse Pokémon nodded, pleased. − Saved from an evil scientist who wanted to enslave or sell him. Also at Ecruteak City some of the oldest pokémon consider the Johto Legendary Beasts as Ho-oh's children, since he made them from the remains in the burned Brass Tower. − he told the Teams matter-of-factly.

− Oh, so even in the human world my Knight and his sisters are Lady Huma's blessed children? − Amaryllis seemed happy at the news.

− "Blessed children"? If I may ask, what does it imply? − Rush unashamedly inquired.

The adult Grass Type seemed to ponder the question, eyeing all six of them, then nodded to herself. − In this world, Legendaries are practically immortal, though if anything should happen to them, either succumb to a natural disaster or be eliminated, another of their species will be born casually from an egg which would have hatched into a pokémon with at least one Type in common with the deceased Legendary. Then there are Aparctias and his sisters. − she smiled bittersweetly. − We don't know what happened to the previous Beasts and we never had the heart to ask Lady Huma... Anyway, the three hatched from a brood of eggs laid by a couple of Eevolutions.

− But Eevee are Normal Types. − Fang noted.

− Though Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon match the Beasts. − Pikachu countered, making Amaryllis nod.

− That is exactly how Lady Huma, a Ho-oh and one of the High Knights was able to bless the eggs so they could hatch into the Beasts. While the two Eevolutions were the biological parents, Lady Huma is their godmother, so to speak. − the Esquire explained.

− So... there could be more than one of each Legendary? − Poccha seemed overwhelmed.

− It could, but generally the Knights try to avoid unnecessary fight for dominance and title. This is also why if they decide to have children of their own, they usually keep the species of the non-Legendary parent. − the Meganium nodded towards her Knight who was trying (and only partially succeeding) to disentangle from the Chikorita's and Bayleef's hold. She lowered her head to add quietly only for the six. − Probably the reason for this situation to be "unheard of" is because Legendaries more than often survive their "mortal" children. So they avoid to make them in the first place. − they sobered at Amaryllis speculation. − Anyway, I'm not telling this to scold you, but just to make you aware of the situation if you ever stumble upon other Knights' children. For someone is a sensitive subject.

The Teams and the two rescued nodded, serious... only for that solemn moment to be shattered by a feminine shrill behind them. − Oh my Granma, a Pikachu! I've never seen one in person! − a split second later the Mouse Pokémon was whisked away by a pair of vines which dragged the too-surprised-to-react rodent into the hold of an energetic and overenthusiastic female Chikorita. She snuggled him close, squeezing almost the soul out of him and making him turn a deadly shade of blue.

Sparkles flickered from the poor pokémon's cheeks, ready to retaliate, before a panicky voice called out: − Nope, wait, nonono!

In the blink of an eye, Ash had crossed the whole distance that separated the Teams from the children, almost ripped his best friend from the Leaf Pokémon's grasp and a Thunderbolt had struck him (and only him) down. The Riolu coughed a cloud of soot before falling, twitching, but with a blissfully breathing Electric Type in his (gentler and safer) hold.

Ash! − they reacted immediately, running up to them, as said boy (still twitching) sat up and Pikachu tried to breath normally again.

− No need to worry, I'm fine. − he waved off their concern, shaking off the thin layer of soot that the Thunderbolt had generated on his fur. − It was actually a low volt shock and I'm more used to them than Chikorita would have been. You okay now, Pikachu? − he looked concerned at his best friend who nodded.

− Sorry for the shock. − he murmured still breathlessly, but Ash just patted his head comfortingly.

− Anemone! What was that?! − in the meanwhile Amaryllis was scolding severely her daughter. − You could have hurt Pikachu gravely and he would have had all the rights to Thunderbolt you in defense! You should be grateful to Ash that he was quick enough to take him away from you!

− I... uhhh... − the Leaf Pokémon shrank back with guilt written all over her face.

− Amaryllis-san, just an apology is enough. − Ash pacified the angered mother, while the other children had frozen since the lighting noise, so the Suicune could completely free himself.

− Unfortunately this isn't the first time I've been manhandled by girls or children. If she's really sorry, then it's fine. − Pikachu seemed still a bit troubled, but the statement seemed honest enough.

− Wow, you two are unbelievable. How can you be so forgiving? − Lizard asked disbelieving. While Caterpie and Metapod were the children he had interacted the most with and they had never behaved like Anemone, he surely would be a little more angry than the duo from the human world.

− Usually we don't hold grudges and certainly not against kids. They just need to understand what was wrong. − the Fighting Type shrugged , standing up with no difficulty and Pikachu imitated him.

− We have experience with hatchlings. It's not unusual for them to be overenthusiastic. − the yellow rodent supplied, but looked a bit warily at the female Chikorita.

− ...I'm sorry. I can't control my strength sometimes. − Anemone fidgeted, a bit guilty.

− Just don't do it again ad it'll be alright. − Pikachu said with a somewhat strained smile that however became more sincere when Ash petted his head.

− It is almost midmorning and min only breakfast had consisted in a cold Oran Berry before the Raid. I am quite famished. − Aparctias shifted the attention to a more pressing matter.

− I could use some brunch! − Fang jumped at the opportunity.

− Then I'll take advantage of your presence and make a warm one. I have a stove where you could light your fire and I know some mean recipes with berries and seeds. − the Meganium offered, then turned to her daughter. − We'll talk later about how to behave with strangers that can knock off your father's Embleteora from his crest with a single move. − said Chikorita gulped, but nodded.

The cottage had two main rooms: there was a big open space, with kitchen and dining room jointed together, which was separated by a curtain of ivy from the bedroom. It was all made in wood, sans for the stove, which was a carved block of grayish rock.

As the chores were divided, the children introduced themselves: the Bayleef was Moss (as Lizard, Poccha and Pikachu already knew); the second oldest was a male Chikorita named Fern with a jagged headleaf; Anemone was the only girl and was the third born, while the youngest male was called Gingko and had a split-in-two-at-the-end headleaf.

Lizard, due to his perennial lit tail, offered to be the literal flame to cook the food on, while Fang helped by chopping with her sharp talons the vegetables and berries that Fern and Anemone passed her. Ash and Pikachu aided Gingko in preparing the table, while Team Purplewing chatted with Moss and his father.

P~OwO~W

Poccha carefully sat beside Aparctias, who was silently watching his children with fond eyes. Not far from them the penguin's partner was chatting with the Bayleef about something he hadn't caught, but given her intent expression it was something related to one of her hobbies.

He looked up at the Suicune and cleared his throat to get his attention. When the other looked down he dared to ask. − Sooo... no hard feelings? For the Embleteora, I mean.

The Legendary shook his head. − This is probably the best outcome, aside from the battle we fought. The Embleteora had long become a shackle, even before the appearance of the Shadows. Thou can keep it, your Teams deserved it.

− Ah thank you sir. − Poccha looked away blushing and to occupy his wings he took out the opalescent rock. − If I'll ever make it forge, it would turn into a keystone, then? − he mused aloud.

− I have never heard about an Empoleonite, so it is likely. Thou and thy partner are lucky, though, there is a Blazikenite. − he paused, eyes darting among the five dimensional travelers. − So are Team Bitefire and the other two. There are both a Charizardite and a Lucarionite. Curious coincidence.

− Not likely. Before Rush and Fang came to your rescue, we theorized that Mega Evolutions are related with our presence here. We mentioned that we were kidnapped, right? − A nod. − Well, while Team Bitefire has no idea on how it happened because they were sleeping, Rush and I heard a Creepy Voice that told us that it depended on us if we ever wanted to go home, so we think-... − Poccha rambled, before Ash interrupted him, sounding concerned.

− You okay there Aparctias-san? You were really alarmed right now. − the Riolu was halfway from putting down a bowl.

− I missed how Lucario and Riolu are so perceptive of others' emotions. − the Water Beast mumbled mutinous under his breath before answering the Fighting Type's question. − Yes, I am. Nothing to be troubled about. I was learning about the circumstances of Team Purplewing abduction. This "Creepy Voice" is concerning. How did you end into min dungeon?

− A hole opened under us. − Poccha told him, eyes skirting to the Emanation Pokémon to read his expression. The oddly amber-eyed pokémon was frowning, staring at the Legendary. The blue bird focused again on the Suicune, whose face was instead blank. − We fell into a tunnel and popped out from the ceiling of one of your dungeon floors. Have you ever heard of someone who could do that?

Aparctias hesitated, looking beyond them at his Esquire who glanced back and made a slight nod. − Perhaps. − he reluctantly let out. − Never learned its name, only that it is one of Lord Palkia's underlings. As there are Mighty and High Knights, there are also the Underground and Rejected ones. Even among us Knights the former are mysterious: their residence, Type, name and gender are unknown, just their existence and some of their power are. The only one who I had met I believe was part Ghost Type and lived and travelled through real shadows. − he paused, lost in his memories. − I was training with Mother Huma when it came to seek her council. I was too young to participate at the discussion, so I do not know what it desired.

− So there are some Legendaries more reclusive than others here. − Lizard commented, adjusting his tail to spread evenly his flame under the pan. − But what about the "Rejected" ones? Did they do unspeakable deeds to be excommunicated?

− Some of them did. Others literally rejected the title in order to live a "peaceful" normal life. − Amaryllis answered for him, mixing the food in the pan. − If I remember right, only two Rejected Knights at the moment are evil doers... Through Libeccio said that we lost trace of one of them few months before the First Wave.

− So who do we need to avoid in order to not end in an unspeakable way? − Fang inquired warily.

− I know, I know! − Gingko jumped enthusiastically, waving a vine. − They're a Groudon and a Manaphy! Father told us about them once as a bed time story.

Real evil Legendaries as a bed time story?! Poccha's and five other glares met the Knight at the unison.

− Is there something the matter? − said pokémon looked unashamed, but uncomfortable with the stares. − Sometimes fables are not happy, because are meant to have a moral: even Knights are not immune to damnation and infamy if they blemish themselves with such crimes. It could also serve as a warning.

− Manaphy...? − apparently satisfied by the answer, Fang trailed, looking at Pikachu in question, but said rodent was occupied by being horrified at the reminder.

A sentiment shared by Poccha (and Rush too, knowing her) and of course by Ash, since they had probably met one too. How could a sweet pokémon, like the Manaphy he and her best friends had hatched, become an evil villain?

− It's a Water Type not much bigger than me with elf-pixie like characteristics. They're born in cold waters only among the pods of Phione, lesser Legendaries that hatch in warm waters, but Manaphy are stronger than them, so they're called Princes or Princesses of the Sea. This is why the Rejected Knight was able to commit its most terrible deed. − Fern solemnly recited, as if he had committed it to memory.

− ...Such as? − Rush whispered, fearing the answer.

− Manaphy was the boss of both a pod of Phione and a pod of Sharpedo, but the latter are infamous roaming thieves who attack and pillage seafloor villages or other pods. Sometimes the raided pokémon disappear too, together with the stolen goods... but no one had been able to prove it. At least till in one shot, four survivors of one of their attacks witnessed both the deed and the involvement of Manaphy. − the second oldest child kept narrating, starting to look disturbed. − Some Phione probably had suspicions about Manaphy's extra-duty activities before that attack, so to eliminate both the risk to be reported and the weight of heading two pods, it... − the kid grumbled uncomfortably, unable to continue.

− The Manaphy issued an attack on the Phione pod and the Sharpedo vanquished it. The four survivors Fern mentioned before were the cousins of some members of the Phione pod. Three of them managed to come out of the raid unscathed only because one of them was a Toxapex and her Baneful Bunker attack was impenetrable. The fourth was busy with a mission, so he had been away at that time. With that move she was able to shield the other three inside the cocoon of her tentacles. − Aparctias mercifully went on for his son. − Libeccio reported that their tale narrated of how some Sharpedo tried several times to barge in while there was a loud commotion. It took hours for it to calm down. They did not dare to come out until the morning after and the reef was deserted of both pokémon and treasures. − he paused, somber. − The Groudon did something similar, but his raiders were golems³* created from sand, rocks and clay. Its targets were oasis and towns at the edge of the desert.

− This golems... Were Regirock or Claydol? − Pikachu warily asked.

− Both, along with some Baltoy, Gotett, Golurk, Sandygast and Palossand. Some think that because of this, the slow but resolute judgment of Lord Regigigas smote the Groudon, so this is why it went missing. The problem is that Lord Regigigas has still not returned his domain and is lost in the way between, so we do not have the detailed report of the event. − the Suicune answered grimly.

− I just heard a bunch of species names I have no idea either what they look like or what they can do. − Fang muttered to her partner, who nodded in assent.

− Just to be sure though, − Lizard said louder than her mutter. − Lord Regigigas is the sire of the Regi Trio, isn't he? − he guessed, earning several nods.

− Yes, he is a High Knight, however he is also known for his extremely slow time of response. His strength compensates that fault, so when he decides at last to judge someone, they should be terrified. − the Water Beast declared solemnly.

Ash turned to Team Bitefire with a reassuring expression. − If you want, after brunch I'll show you all the pokémon he mentioned... But I don't know if my Dex has registered what Toxapex, Sandygast or Palossand are. − he offered, then trailed unsure, looking back at their hosts.

− The latter are Ghost-Ground Types, with Palossand as the evolution of Sandygast. If I remember right they look like sand castle. − Moss answered, then indulgently let his eager sister take the lead.

− Toxapex are super cool Water-Poison Types with spiked tentacles on their head. They're similar to Lileep, if you know them. − Anemone launched into the description with gusto. − They can make a sort of bunker with the twelve spiked head-tentacles and when they use the move Baneful Bunker, it works like a Protect but it also poisons whoever makes contact with it.

− You like them? − Rush noticed with amusement.

− Yup! Once Libeccio had a keychain with one of them sculptured from a Corsola's horn. Apparently Toxapex and Mareanie favorite food is that. − she answered eagerly.

− Oookay, we're done setting the table, Amaryllis-san. − Pikachu interjected, trying to change the topic.

− Right on time. Oran Berry stew spiced with Joy Seed powder. − the Teams members startled at the mention of that item. Why did she use a seed so precious as condiment?

Ash had caught even this change, because he was looking at them alarmed but unsure on how to react.

− Joy Seed? Thou are pampering me, Meganium. − Aparctias stood to join his children at the table, oblivious.

His Esquire, though, was more perceptive and eyed the six with a smirk. − You? This is a reward and an amend to who fought and saved my idiotic Knight. Besides, the children were due to get some nutrients; may as well treat our guests too. − she turned to Ash and Pikachu. − I don't know if there are this kind of seeds in the human world, but they help pokémon level up a bit. Golden Seeds are their boosted version.

− Oh! Well, there are no seeds at all, but humans have created an item that does the same thing: they call it Rare Candy. − Pikachu chirped, oblivious of the reaction roused in the children's eyes.

− Humans?! − all the four Leaf Pokémon exclaimed excitedly.

− You saw them? They aren't fairy tales? − the female Chikorita leaped at the Mouse Pokémon who, with probably a bit of either Agility or Quick Attack, bolted behind Ash.

Anemone. − Aparctias warned severely and the child stepped back in shame.

− Bayleef didn't scare you like this when she was a Chikorita. − the Riolu observed with a slight note of hilarity.

The Electric Type glared at his best friend, not looking amused. − Because she was just jealous of you and just wanted to hog all your attention! She wasn't so overenthusiastic. − he grumbled. The Emanation Pokémon harrumphed unconvinced and amused, but didn't comment further.

The Meganium herded the rest of her offspring and her guests to the table, where she served the stew inside the bowls and, after a chorus of "Bon appetite!" and two "Itadakimasu!", the pokémon began eating. Delighted hums came from the guests, clearly appreciating the meal. Poccha was among them: Chimecho was good, but this was even better!

− I find min one curious. How is living with humans like? Which are the differences? − Aparctias asked after a while, spoon held by one of his tails to eat the stew.

Ash seemed to deflate a bit in shame, but immediately looked at his aibou in curious askance. Said rodent put down the bowl he had been drinking from and swiped his muzzle with a napkin.

− There's never a real dull moment. Even if we aren't an Exploration Team, Ash and I travel a lot around the regions we want to learn more of. Usually some humans tag along too, even if they have different goals from us. − he paused to fish out a cooked Oran Berry and munched it while thinking. − We had a breeder, who was around for years, who taught us a bit of nursing, grooming and several other things before he decided to go and study to become a pokémon doctor. Brock is like a big brother to you, Ash. − he added, making said ex-human smile at the concept. − At the start of our journey, we had also this redhead girl expert in Water Types. Most of everything we learned about them is because of her... and mostly thanks to her Ash's attitude is not so bratty anymore. − he teased, flicking an ear at the Riolu who protested with a whine. − Don't deny it, you were so full of yourself that an inflated Jigglypuff wouldn't be able to surpass past-you ego!

− Even if I wanted, I couldn't, I don't remember myself that well. − Ash shot back, a bit mutinous.

− Sorry. − Pikachu muttered a bit guilty. − Anyway, she butted heads with him so often that sometimes I still wonder if that was a human courting ritual...

− Pikachu! − the Riolu chocked, Tamato Berry-red.

− What? Brock, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Pidgeot wondered the same thing at least once! And probably even the others thought so but never said anything aloud! − the Electric Type protested. − And it wasn't just arguing, because sometimes with Iris you almost bit each other head off too, but it didn't give us the same vibe that had been there with Misty. Even Charizard, Charizard!, agreed!

− Pikachu, stop please! At least can we discuss this when I'll actually remember something to confirm or deny it? − the Fighting Type pleaded, almost desperate.

− So Brock-big-bro and Ash's redhead love interest weren't the only humans you travelled with? − Rush had mercy and tried to deflect the attention, but not without a tease of her own.

− No, we had five other girls and four boys. Three of the former were more interested in making their pokémon moves look showy to do sort of performances that were judged in Contests. One of the other two non-coordinators girls was the Iris I mentioned: she and you, Lizard, would have got along like a house on fire since she was training to become a Dragon Master. − Pikachu continued, making the Charmander lit up. − The last girl is too young to be a trainer, but she is the younger sister of one of the boys, who travelled with us, so he lent her a Dedenne. − he paused at the Teams' vacant expression. − Dedenne are Electric-Fairy Types that look like a mix between a Raichu and a Marill. − he explained. − Anyway, her brother is an Electric Type specialist and an inventor, though his machines always end up in an explosion. One of the other boys was a kid too and brother of one of the performers. He's reeeally booksmart and spouted trivia out of nowhere sometimes. Another boy, almost as old as Brock, was very good at sketching, so he travelled with us for few moments to have some company while searching for rare and reclusive pokémon. − Pikachu paused to drink a bit of the broth. − The last boy is a Pokémon Connoisseur: he likes to study the interaction between pokémon and humans to find their best match.

− Match? − Poccha asked confused. What did he mean?

− Like Exploration and Rescue Teams, human and pokémon form squads too. However, since humans don't usually have special powers, sans for a pawful of them, they mostly help us feeding, training, battling and creating artistic performances; in exchange we protect and compete with them in tournaments. Besides, trainers' pokémon usually evolve or learn moves faster than the unpaired ones. Pokémon Connoisseurs try to help trainers find the best match to help both human and pokémon develop their main interest. For example, we had an Aipom nàkama that became more interested in performing than battling, while one of the girl coordinators, Dawn, had a Buizel that wanted to train and fight like us. A Connoisseur would have suggested them to switch teams like a friend of Dawn did. After the change, we managed to defeat many foes, Buizel is really good at combining Water and Ice Type moves.

− Oh, I remember that! He defeated a Gastrodon once with an Ice Aqua Jet, then with an Ice Punch! − Ash exclaimed excited and Pikachu nodded in emphatic eagerness.

− You said "evolve faster", Pikachu. Do you mean that Baia Luccichio-like places⁴* tell you earlier than it can evolve you? − Moss asked curiously.

− "It can evolve you"? Don't pokémon usually evolve when they're ready or with determinate items? − Ash replied tilting his head and leaving all of them (san Pikachu of course) baffled.

− No, they do not. Due to the distortion caused by the dungeons, pokémon are unable to evolve on their own. Perhaps in the human world this interference does not exist. − Aparctias speculated.

− Aww, pity. I wanted to know who was going to evolve out of nowhere with you around. − Pikachu pouted, finishing his stew.

− It's not that bad. − Ash gulped down the rest of his food too.

− Ash, during a race the Ponyta you were riding on literally evolved under you. Plus more than once one of our nàkama evolved during a battle; it happened even to our opponents sometimes! − the yellow rodent objected.

− Okay, they were a bit odd. − the Riolu scratched his cheek awkwardly. − Evolution happens only in certain places here then? − he looked at the Knight and Esquire, who nodded.

− Indeed. Here the place is called Baia Luccichio, as Moss mentioned earlier, and it's found on Isola Eevoluzione. Beyond the forest in the backyard, there are the dungeons of Aparctias's sisters, then there's a sea between the cliff and Vulcano Fucina. In that trait of sea there's Gorgo Nero, a giant whirlpool, and beside it there's the island with the bay. It's guarded by a community of eevolutions and their chief, Lady Exélixi, a Mew. − Amaryllis answered, standing up and retrieving the empty bowls. At her gesture Moss went and retrieved the map, which he opened on the now free table. − Maybe now that you're in a different dimension, you could try your luck again Rush.

− Oh, I sure hope so. My hobbies would be so much easier. − the Torchic agreed.

− I can make a copy of the map in the meanwhile. − Poccha offered, taking out their own regional map and turning it around. Its blank space was perfect for a replica.

− Be our guest. You can do the same if you have the paper. − Amaryllis told team Bitefire, who eyed uncertainly one another.

− I've never tried to draw after we became a team, I dunno if I'm decent... − Fang trailed, subtly gesturing to herself. Right: human-turned-Totodile with amnesia.

Lizard instead grimaced. − Well, I'm rubbish.

− You could always try; at most, I'll redraw it. − the Penguin Pokémon reassured as Moss passed him a charcoal.

− Okay... − the Totodile grabbed her own map and imitated the other Water Type with another charcoal.

X~OwO~Y

Ash and Pikachu watched as the two Water Types began their attempt at copying the map. The Riolu hummed pensively, making his aibou look up at him. The Electric Type made an inquiring noise that caught the attention of his trainer, so he repeated it, unconsciously slipping in their common non-verbal communication.

− Sorry, I was wondering what we should do next. I mean, obviously we'll accompany Fang and the others to Vulcano Fucina and see if Palkia-san is there and if he can help us go home, but... − he trailed glancing over to Aparctias, Amaryllis and the children. − I'd feel bad to leave all these pokémon with this Shadow-problem without doing anything. − he added quietly, in order to let only him hear.

Pikachu sighed briefly. − I had a feeling that you would say something like that. − he answered, closing his eyes and thinking, so Ash waited as he pondered what to say next. He did mean what he had said to the Teams that morning: their luck was adverse at best and twisted at worst. Maybe their being here was the will (either direct or indirect) of some of their own Legendaries, if no one from this dimension was directly involved. It wouldn't be the first time "coincidences" like this happened (his "favorite" was the pun-prophecy that casually happened right when they had accidentally ended on Shamouti Island). Speaking of that... − Ash, just a thing out of curiosity: do you remember the other Lugia-incident beside Silver and his mother? − he looked up at the other.

The Riolu frowned a bit, but then shrugged. − You mean when we had to run around four islands to get three glass orbs to stop a catastrophic climate change? − he asked tentatively, earning a pleased nod. − Why?

− It came to my mind, I just wanted to check. Anyway... I wouldn't mind lending a paw, above all if all of us is trying to solve the problem as fast as possible to get back home. I'm sure that their friends are as worried as ours for their disappearance. − Pikachu finally quietly answered Ash's first indirect inquiry.

− That was another thing I was worried about: who were the humans that are travelling with us this time and how much would they and our nàkama be worried for us? − his trainer asked seriously.

− Eh... − the Mouse Pokémon hesitated, uncertain if it was better to mellow the truth or outright tell him a lie. However a look in his aibou's eyes compelled him to be honest. Ash deserved as much now that he could completely understand him. − Clemont and Bonnie, the inventor and his little sister, are probably freaking out, but knowing him, he's probably already thinking about a way to bring us back. Serena, our most recent performer, well... she's often pretty determined, but she and the others saw us disappear from under their eyes, so she'll be distressed a lot. It's Frogadier and Talonflame that I'm worried about. I heard that they were trying to save us, but... − he trailed uncomfortably.

− ...Yeah, knowing them, they'll feel guilty. − Ash agreed, sighing deeply and crossing his arms. − If we can't go back as quickly as we'd like, we should at least find a way to send them a message to reassure them that we're alright.

− That would be ideal, yep. − Pikachu glanced at the two Water Starters progress and the halfway result wasn't that bad. − Anyway, we need to figure out what you can do now, beside the Aura Sphere I mean. − he added looking back at Ash, who perked.

− Ohhh, we can actually train together now! − the ex-human thrilled in anticipation. − I can't wait for it! Can we have a test run battle to see what I can pull off?

− Of course, but we'll go easy at first, okay? − he warned. Pikachu was both a bit wary and excited at the idea of sparring with Ash, since he had no idea of how strong the ex-human had become since turning into a Riolu.

− So, what are your plans now? − Amaryllis asked, interrupting his train of thought.

− We'll have to discuss, but probably we'll head towards Vulcano Fucina soon. − Rush eyed her group and Pikachu found himself nodding along with the others. − Even if faint, your trail on the Creation Trio is everything we have for now.

The Electric Type felt Ash shift and caught him with the corner of the eye as he glanced questionably first at the Esquire, then at her Knight. What was he feeling through his Aura sense to make him react like this?

− Then we have a request: could Team Bitefire and Team Purplewing retrieve min sisters' Embleteore? This will be classified as an official Rescue Mission. − Aparctias declared solemnly.

− The rewards of course will be the Embleteore themselves and whatever Lady Hekla and Lady Veena would offer you for your services. We will write two letters addressed to them in order to avoid the same despicable incident happened with Aparctias. − Amaryllis added, sending a small glare at the Suicune, who had just a slight shiver, but kept his stoic façade.

The two drawing Water Types stopped their work and turned to gape at the couple, while Lizard seemed thrilled by the prospect. Rush was pensive, Pikachu felt okay with the request since they were going in the same direction anyway and Ash was already nodding determinately.

− Are you sure they won't think we're fakers and attack us? − Poccha asked cautiously.

− Not if you follow our instructions on how to approach them. Each dungeon has an access through determinate landmarks that are known only by Knights, Esquires and trusted Teams. In a sense, you'll be recommended from the very start of your journey. − Amaryllis reassured.

The Penguin Pokémon briefly watched the other five's reactions (Fang after the first hesitation had been convinced by Amaryllis's words), before relenting. − I'm in then.

− So do we. − Lizard agreed determinately, Fang grinning along.

− We'll help too, even if we're not a Rescue Team. − Ash piped up, flames dancing into his amber eyes. The Legendary and Herb Pokémon seemed surprised, but the Teams were a bit alarmed. The Riolu caught the change, because he added: − I know that we can't physically take the Embleteore out, but you said that many pokémon are agitated, in trouble or dangerous, so maybe we can help you four with that.

− We'll do that in any case, you'll learn it by travelling with us. − Pikachu hid a smirk of victory as the girls grimaced, but yielded.

− Thank you. We'll start writing the letters then. − Amaryllis beamed grateful. A bit forcefully grabbed the Suicune with her vines and dragged him to the sleep quarters of the cottage. − You can keep on finishing the map, it will take few minutes. Moss you're in charge in the meanwhile.

− Yosh! Fern, Anemone, Gingko, let's go outside, we're gonna practice some moves! − said Leaf Pokémon prompted his siblings, who (with various degrees of enthusiasm) followed him.

The six dimensional travelers watched them go with amusement, then they turned serious... for about three seconds before they became aware of Ash's fidgeting.

Fang was the first to snicker, before she turned to him and Pikachu, grinning. − We'll make the arrangements for how to organize the journey, you two can go and watch them practice and do some of it for yourselves in the meanwhile. We need everyone of the group in their best shape, after all.

The trainer cheered as the Mouse Pokémon sighed in fond exasperation. − Okay, if you need us or want to join, we'll be outside. − the yellow rodent agreed, then he and the Riolu dashed outside. It would be a good excuse to exercise and release the pent up nervous energy accumulated in the last hours.

− You ready Pikachu? − Ash asked with a matching grin as they stopped in the middle of the clearing.

− You bet! Come at me with everything you've got and don't hold back, I wanna see what you're capable of! − Pikachu goaded, while his trainer did warm up exercises.

− Okay! − he called back. This was going to be fun.

A/N. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Let's hope this one will be better than the last since too many things happened in 2018 for it being a non-bissextile year (in Italy -or maybe just my family, who knows really- there's the superstition of bissextile years' bad luck).

Soooo... this chapter was supposed to come out with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on December 7th, but snow, lasagna, Christmas and Mega-(Shinka)-Mix-world-building happened, so finally here on the first day of 2019 it comes! (Besides, today came out also the first trailer of Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, so I jumped at the occasion.)

I really do hope my explanations hadn't been too boring/complicated/twisted, but if there's anything that hadn't been clear, feel free to ask.

The origin/birth of Legendaries is my personal headcanon for this dimension, after all their Breeding group is usually listed as "Unknown/Undiscovered", so it can be interpreted as we like.

I left "subtle" references (note the irony) of my shipping alignment... was it noticeable? xD To be honest though Pikachu has always been shown to prefer only one girl among the Ash's travelling companions, so his opinion is not really OoC (check Bulbapedia's "Ash's Pikachu" page in the section "Personality and Characteristics" for confirmation ;) ).

Next time we'll learn some new pieces of information about some out of screen dialogues and what is Ash's new Riolu form able to do (probably if I feel like it/it fits in the narration I'll even add which instrument each Rescue Team -and Pikachu- "sounds" like).

Thanks for all the new (and old!) favorites, follows and reviews, type ya next time!

EDIT: A friend of mine pointed out that because of the roles each magma-related dungeon had, the names should have been switched. So now Vulcano Fornace is Vulcano Fucina and Collina Fucina is Collina Fornace. Sorry for the confusion. (๑=ㅂ=๑|||)

[Guest (November 21st): yyyep, they never mentioned Ash (or Fang & Rush for the matter) were human before pokémon, but that was intentional. You'll probably learn the reason next chapter xP. Back on your Mega Evolution-related question: in terms of fic-mechanics, in this dimension it's just needed a Mega-capable pokémon and its trusted partner, whatever it is. Probably the presence of a previously-human-being among the couple would give the Mega evolution a Plus Ultra (got the reference? xD) than a pokémon-pokémon combo; so yes, all three of them can Mega evolve if they become their final form.

SebjectCrimsonStorm: I'm glad you liked it, so here's the new chapter!]
