Quest 001: First Step
About thirty or so minutes later, the Teams peeked out of the cottage to check on their new friends (after finishing the maps and Fern had "escaped" from the training with the excuse of helping Lizard and Rush put away the dishes).
− Am I really seeing what I'm seeing? − Poccha openly gaped at the display, but the others weren't that far behind.
− I'm almost leaning on believing that the stumbles in the forest had been a fluke to trick us. − Lizard agreed, making his same Type pokémon frown in disagreement.
− I don't think so: he did say he has a fast recovery rate. − she chirped, stepping out but staying near the cottage wall, to keep clear from the training zone. Not far from the Torchic sat the two Chikorita and the Bayleef, who had made way to the Fighting and Electric Types so they could stare in wonder at the duo.
− Moss-bro, do you think that the humans had been the ones to teach him all of that? − Anemone shout-whispered at the astounded older Leaf Pokémon.
− I have no idea, but... Oh, that was awesome! − Moss exclaimed, excited.
Said "that" had been Ash back-flipping away from a Quick Attack, stopping abruptly to leap back at Pikachu with a shimmering paw at the ready. The Mouse Pokémon promptly battered it down with his tail, ready to counterattack, but when the glowing black paw made contact with the ground, the latter exploded in a cloud of dust that obscured the sparring pokémon from the view.
Few seconds later the dust had dispersed enough to see them- or better him, since there was only a bewildered and coughing Electric type left standing.
− Ash? Where did you go? − Pikachu called once he had regained his breath. The eight pokémon faintly heard a muffled reply, but none understood where it was coming from. − What? Ash, where are you?
This time, in lieu of an answer, the ground under Pikachu's feet trembled, giving him enough warning to jump back because soon after the Riolu's head popped out from the soil like a Diglett.
− I think that I accidentally learned how to Dig. − Ash sounded as surprised as them.
− How? Your paw just hit the ground! − Moss protested in disbelief.
− Aura, I think. − the Riolu climbed out with the help of Pikachu and shook away the lingering dust. − I was trying to learn Force Palm, so I tried the first step of an Aura Sphere by coating with Aura my hand, then tried to attack Pikachu; but by hitting the ground, I pulverized it... and fell in. To get out I did the same thing. − he explained and gingerly lit his paw again to observe it. − This feels easier now than that time with Mew and the gloves. − he looked at Pikachu for confirmation.
− Since coming here, you probably got a boost. − he subtly gestured to his being a Riolu. − You had no one to teach you how to wield your Aura, but now it's just a second nature to you.
That Rush could understand. Grovyle had told her that in the future the two of them had fought against the Sableye several times and, while she had still been a human, she had been a proficient fighter. Now that I think about it, Grovyle said that I preferred kicks to punches, so maybe my body adapted to my fighting style and took form of the closest pokémon to match it and reflect my fiery temper too... she paused, deadpanning. Dumb body.
− Apart from Dig, what do you have then? − Fang asked curiously.
− I think I saw an Aura Sphere before! − Gingko answered helpfully for him.
− Yeah, we think that at some point I did a slower version of Quick Attack too, but for now there's only Aura Sphere and Dig for immediate use. − Ash turned off his paw and shook it as if it was tingling. − Force Palm still has a long way to go.
− You'll get it, don't worry. − Pikachu reassured.
− How were you able to move like that when less than an hour ago you were stumbling like an hatchling?! − Lizard insisted, approaching the duo along with the others, since it was evident that the spar had ended. Fang slightly swatted him for his straightforwardness.
− Uhhgh... − the Riolu seemed caught off guard, unsure on what to say.
− Ash sometimes overthinks things. − Pikachu intervened mercifully. − He's more an instinctual kind of trainer, so direct experience and thought battles are usually the best way to learn for him. See? − he pointed with a thumb to his best friend, who tilted his head questioningly. − Now that he has forgotten about the tail, Ash stands and walks normally.
− ...You have a point. − Poccha yielded along with the male Fire Type.
− To be honest though, I was also distracted by something else. − the Riolu was still slightly pouting at Pikachu's comment, so this remark caught the interest of both Teams.
− Namely? − Rush prompted.
− Remember back at the camp when Fang asked about the Aura's flavors? − Ash asked, so the girls nodded. − Now that I'm fine, I can feel them better. The basic sensations are still the same, but each pokémon's Aura has its own voice now. The closest thing I could compare it to is musical instruments. − he explained, rambling a bit.
− Really?! Can you tell who is what? − the Charmander seemed as excited as he had been while speaking about Dragon Types, so probably music was one of his passions too.
− Not yet sorry. − the trainer scratched his nape mareepishly. − Right now it's like hearing a concert in the background, so it's hard to distinguish. But I'll let you know as soon as I get them.
− That's fair. − Lizard agreed. − Thanks.
− You're welcome! How did the maps turn out? − the Riolu asked curiously.
− Fang's first lines were a bit shaky, but her copying abilities are good. − Poccha complimented.
− Thanks. We've already marked the Legendary Beasts' dungeons and Baia Luccichio: judging by the scale of the map, there's a day-travel journey at most in between each destination. Depending on how we will be able to cross Gorgo Nero and the sea channel between Isola Eevoluzione and the mainland, it will take us a week at most to reach Vulcano Fucina. − the Totodile analyzed.
− Better than nothing. − the Charmander sighed. − I hope that Zenchou won't freak out too much for our prolonged absence.
− Who? I never heard about that pokémon. − Ash perked in interest.
− No, that's just his name, he's an Absol. − Fang intervened. − He's one of our teammates and he was staying at our base when we were abducted. Judging by the state of our bag, he fought a bit with the assailant, so he already knows we're missing. − she explained the other ex-human, since he had been KO during the first telling.
− We've been promoted from our Guild few months ago so we've got our own base away from the main cliff. I dunno how long it will take for Sunflora and the others to notice our disappearance on action. − Rush felt compelled to fill in that missing information too.
− Less than a day, since our... ocean hatchling said that he wanted to wait for our return from World Abyss dungeon to see the Rock Horn. − Poccha hesitated in mentioning their Manaphy since the one of this dimension was evil.
− Oh, you have a hatchling? What is he? − Ash, along with Pikachu, seemed eager to know since they were both fidgeting.
− Well... − the Torchic trailed, eyeing the three Leaf Pokémon. Then she decided that such reservation wasn't needed: people shouldn't hold prejudices because of the species and they were two different pokémon to begin with. − We found Manaphy's egg on the "Bubble Shore" and cared for it till it hatched. He lived with us till we noticed that he felt ill for being too long out of the ocean, so he passed a month with a friend of a friend in open water. − Rush told them to Poccha's horror (and facewing). Still, she added with pride: − The kid is stubborn though, so he came back after having grown enough to resist the dehydratation and became an official Team Purplewing member. Sometimes he still has to spend some hours in ocean water, but he basically lives with us again.
− Lucky. One of our coordinator friends, May, accidentally was the first person our Manaphy saw when his egg hatched. However since he was destined to be the guardian of an underwater palace, I think its name was... Samiya, he had to depart from her, his imprinted mama. − Pikachu added soberly.
− We know that feeling. We thought we wouldn't be able to see him again anymore. − the Torchic nodded in sympathy.
− So how is a not-evil-Manaphy? − Gingko piped up, curious. Rush smiled smugly at the accomplishment, so the Piplup relented from his facewing.
− Ours is chatty. He usually accompanies me into the underwater dungeons I need to go into and enjoys exploring and telling me of his solo adventures. − the Penguin Pokémon told them.
− I think... that ours didn't want to stay away from us at first, so he swapped me with somebody else? − Ash asked more than affirmed, looking at the Mouse Pokémon for confirmation.
Pikachu nodded eagerly. − It's a special ability of his species, I think it's called Heart Swap: it can make two or more people to switch bodies.
− Wow, it could be awesome to discover what feels like to be something else! − Anemone daydreamed, then sighed forlornly. − Pity our Knight is evil.
− Don't worry, father always says that sooner or later every real Forsaken Knight will be punished, so there will be another Manaphy. − Moss consoled his sister.
As if summoned by the Leaf Pokémon's mention, the Suicune came out of the cottage with his consort. Both of them wore a solemn expression that unconsciously made the Teams members stand straighter.
− We made you three letters at last. One for min sister Hekla, − Aparctias said as Amaryllis gave Lizard (the nearest) a sealed envelope − another for min sister Veena − the second envelope was given to Fang − and the last is for Lady Exélixi and her court, just in the eventuality of needing certified references. − the third was given to Pikachu, who turned it around curiously. On each of them were written the target's name. − Last but not least, here there are the landmarks-shortcuts for each of min sisters' dungeons. Treasure them and do not let anyone else see them. − the last piece of paper (just a folded sheet) was given to Poccha who opened it and studied it a bit, then nodded.
− What are your plans now? − the Meganium asked them.
Rush turned to look at the others, trying to tell what they wanted to do. Despite her prolonged state of awakening (she had lost count after the 23rd hour) she still felt the adrenaline from the Shadow Raid run through her veins, so she felt restless: she wanted to go home. The same sentiment seemed mirrored on the others' five faces, so she felt confident enough to declare: − We're probably ready to go. The stew really helped after that battle. − the Torchic looked back to seek confirmation and it came with several nods.
− What about you? Now that your Embleteora has been freed, you're practically unemployed. − Lizard asked, probably without realizing that Aparctias was still a Knight and a Legendary, so he earned a disproving chomp on air from Fang, but apart from a little flinch, he didn't react.
− We will wait for Libeccio to report the event... and now that I am free, I will dedicate min one to be a father. I could not leave the dungeon since the First Wave: I need some rest. − the Suicune sighed in relief, ignoring the exchange.
− You deserve it, father. − Moss agreed.
− Let's retrieve our bags then! − Fang prompted the group, which went back inside the cottage where they had left all their things.
B~OwO~F
The group before the bags actually hesitated. How could they divide the baggage?
− So this is my backpack? − Ash crouched before said idem, then looked up at Pikachu who confirmed with a nod. The Fighting Type opened it, and put away the letter for Mew that his aibou passed him, then (after closing it) he picked up the luggage to value its weight before putting it on.
− I'm not sure you should carry it with a recently healed back. − Lizard voiced his worries, while Fang refrained from doing the same in favor of observing the Riolu's body-language. Each movement was fluid and unhesitant, so he wasn't feeling any discomfort.
− It feels fine; now that I'm wearing it I feel even warmer. − Ash rebutted, pacing in a circle to prove his point.
− I noticed that your fur is thinner and shorter where the burn had been because it still needs time to re-grow properly. Maybe the backpack can work as a protection of sorts. − the Totodile finally mused, gaining Amaryllis's approval.
− That's for the better. Fur on mammal-like pokémon is an important defense mechanism. I'd be worried more for the weight, but if I remember right it wasn't that heavy. − the Meganium extended a vine just to give a tug at the rucksack. − No, it's fine.
− Thanks for your concern Amaryllis-san. − Ash bowed his head, Pikachu mimicking him.
Fang looked at her partner who with a shrug handed her their bag along with the letters, Poccha doing the same with Rush, but he kept the sheet for easy consult.
The Herb Pokémon made way for the Teams and guests so they could get out the cottage and face the family who stood now complete to salute their leaving.
− It's all in the instructions too, but you should walk north on that path till you reach the stone totem of the Legendary Beasts. − the Esquire explained. − While Lady Hekla is the nearest, at the totem there's a crossroads that would also lead to Lady Veena.
− However, given how... temperamental Veena is, I suggest you to meet Hekla first. Two Embleteore would be enough a testament of your trustworthiness and mission. − Aparctias tried to reassure.
− "Temperamental"? − Poccha asked, rightfully wary. Fang hadn't been reassured either.
− If you do not put in peril or threaten her clan, you will not have problems with her. She is extremely protective of her acquired family. − the Suicune amended.
− Minna, it's not that different from us after all. − Ash pointed out.
− I guess... − Rush conceded and the other Teams members seemed to mollify too. − We'll be careful though.
− That is all I can ask. You have my deepest apology for the incident and gratitude for your actions. − the Knight bowed his head along with his family so the six responded in kind.
− Glad to be of help. Hope to see you all again in better circumstances. − Lizard politely saluted and made way for the group towards the path Amaryllis had indicated.
− We'll wait for you to tell us more about humans! − Anemone waved goodbye with her head-leaf.
− You can count on it! − Ash waved back, partially hiding with his body Pikachu, who seemed eager to put as much distance as possible between him and "the menace".
They stopped waving as soon as they turned the corner and the Electric Type shuddered. − I do really hope Amaryllis-san would teach her how to deal with strangers.
− There's always hope. Above all if Amaryllis scolds Aparctias too. He kept distrusting us even when we were saving his furry butt. − the Torchic sighed forlornly.
− Speaking of the rescue: Ash, now that you're better and there's no immediate danger, can you tell us again about what happened at our camp? − Fang asked the other ex-human, who hummed in thought. At this the others male perked in interest.
− I felt surging from underground this... wrongness, I have really no other way to name the sensation, apart from... Pikachu, do you remember that underground temple with the Pokéball-like orb? The one with the imprisoned King's spirit. − Ash trailed.
− The King of Pokélantis that possessed you? − the Mouse Pokémon frowned.
− You got possessed?! − Poccha exclaimed fearfully.
− Yeah, it happened a couple of times... − Ash chuckled mareepishly, but soldiered on to prevent a barrage of questions. − But anyway, the wrongness gave off almost the same feeling.
− Why? What did he make you do? − Lizard asked warily.
− Battle treacherously against somebody, I think. − the Riolu glanced at Pikachu for confirmation, getting it. − He wanted to capture Ho-oh next, but Pikachu chased him away from me with a Thunderbolt.
− How are you still alive? Humans are so fragile in comparison to pokémon... Ninetales and Gardevoir made me one in part for this. − Fang muttered in horrified awe.
− I developed a resistance with how many times Pikachu or others shocked me. He still shocks me awake sometimes if I'm oversleeping. − he shrugged like it was nothing.
− While I find fascinating Ash's abnormal and monstrous electric resistance, he and Fang made me remember something. − Lizard interrupted, then looked at the Fighting Type. − You were unconscious at the time, so we couldn't tell you until now: we've decided unanimously that no one has to know that you were humans before.
Fang watched as the Emanation Pokémon raised an eyeridge in surprise. − Well, if Pikachu agreed, there's no problem. Why though? − once again his unconditional trust stunned her: if Lizard and her were still building a relationship like theirs, what would take to reach that level?
− We compared our stories and in both of them the public knowledge about the "ex-human"-thing led to so many troubles: Fang was mistaken for another pokémon-turned-human, but an evildoer one, and chased for days; I was identified as one of the time-travelers who came back to avoid disaster by a Dusknoir who wanted to let said disaster to happen... Therefore, Poccha and I were abducted and almost killed. − Rush explained. − So... just in case, you know.
At the persistent indecisive frown, Pikachu intervened. − Ash, since you do remember: the prophecy that punned your name.
− Yep! No one needs to know! − the trainer cheered, walking forward with a slight hysteric sprint in his steps.
− Wait! What could a prophecy say to use your name as a pun?!* − Fang ran to catch up with him and Pikachu, but that turned into a chase as the Riolu refused to answer and fled.
X~OwO~Y
As soon as the six reached the stone totem at the crossroad (the four still chasing him, mind you), Ash noticed the loss of something in the background and skidded to a halt in front of the statue, slightly panting. He looked around, but seeing nothing worth of notice, he closed his eyes, focusing first on his hearing, then tapped into his new Aura Sense.
The symphony had few missing instruments than before. What and who...
− You okay there Ash? − Pikachu asked tensely, shacking out of his trance.
− Uhm, sorry, I'm fine. I just noticed that Amaryllis-san and the others went out of range. − he explained, looking back at the Teams and met Lizard's eyes. − I think there was a pipe organ and few harps before in the Aura orchestra.
− "Aura Orchestra"? I like the sound of it! − Fang murmured with a chuckle as her partner's eyes lit up.
− So either Aparctias or Amaryllis were the pipe organ. − the Charmander guessed eagerly.
− Probably. − the trainer turned to the statue. Carved into a dark gray rock there were the Legendary Beasts with a Suicune facing their path on the bottom, an Entei in the middle that looked at the trail on the right and on top a Raikou, which looked at the left road. At the feet of each of them there were some engraved hieroglyphs he couldn't decipher. − So this is the Totem. Can you read the signs?
− Yes, they are the names of each dungeon. − Poccha easily answered. − There's even the distance. − he furrowed his eyes, concentrating. − Probably if we hurry, tomorrow morning or late tonight we could reach Collina Fornace.
− I'm all out for walking. The Shadow Raid left me on edge. − Rush commented, pausing tensely to brush the totem with a wing (as if she was expecting something to happen), then more relaxed headed to the path on the right, so they followed her. − So, apart from the same vibes given by an evil ghost monarch, was there anything else? − she picked up the previous discussion.
Ash grimaced at the memory. − It was angry. And hungry. What made me sick was the rage after your escape from the dungeon. The wrongness calmed down only because it seemed vaguely satisfied at a certain point.
A sudden drum thundered rapid loud beats (overwhelming anything else) so suddenly that Ash actually jumped in fright, starling the five. − Did you hear that? − he gasped, stopping walking.
− What? − Pikachu raised his ears, alert, lowering the Specs to look around. − I didn't hear anything and there's no one in the forest.
− A drum. It came out of nowhere and seemed so near... − Ash's voice faltered as a quiet epiphany reached him as he looked at the Teams. The Aura Orchestra was agitated now, the most prevalent instrument being... − Was any of you about to say anything before I jumped? − he reached the five and the group began their trek again.
− ...I was. − Rush hesitantly answered, walking beside him. − I wanted to point out that we were practically about to be eaten during that Shadow Raid, if what you felt was the Darkness Riptide origin. Why?
− Sorry, you startled me then. − Ash cleared his throat awkwardly. − With your panicky drum, I mean. I wasn't expecting it. − he clarified to a now wide eyed Torchic.
− Rush's instrument is a drum? − Poccha deduced and the Riolu nodded, making him deflate in relief. − What a relief! I thought that somebody was going to attack us...
− Sorry... − Ash apologized again, this time mareepishly.
− So you freaked out for my inner freak out. − Rush summed and he reluctantly nodded. − I should be the one to be sorry then. The Pokédex did say that you can feel the emotions of those around you: it's as if I shouted in the ear at point blank rage, isn't it? This is something to considerate while we're working together.
− But it's unfair for you to try and restrain your emotions! − Ash argued back, agitated. He didn't want to cause discomfort to his new friends!
− Then how about we leash them just a bit till you get used to the new Aura Orchestra waltzes? − Fang proposed diplomatically. − It'll be like putting the wheelies to a bike.
− I appreciate your effort, but I don't like this idea too much. You'll be walking on eggshells and you'll be uncomfortable. I don't like to put my friends in such situation just for my sake. − the trainer protested. − I've already slowed you down enough. − he admitted in a quiet mutter that probably only Pikachu could have picked. And he did, judging by a deep sigh beside him.
−Ash... − it was needed only his name to deliver all his aibou's dissatisfaction and irritation with his attitude, even without feeling his electric Aura resonate with said emotions.
The drumbeats perked again before its owner spoke. − Then what about the opposite approach? − All eyes converged towards Rush in unanimous question. − If with Pikachu's electricity worked, why not let Ash develop an emotional-shock resistance?
A piercing violin note made the trainer almost wince for its acuteness, though his ears did fold back, anticipating the "explosion".
− Absolutely not! I don't want Ash to become apathetic and unemotional! − Pikachu (as predicted) "exploded".
− And I didn't mean like that. − the female Fire Type tried to reassure the Mouse Pokémon. − I wanted to try a sort of "shock-therapy" so he doesn't startle every time at the sudden and unexpected emotions. Just enough so at least he doesn't physically react to them.
− She has a point. − Lizard murmured, seemingly pondering. − There could be times in the future where we'll need to be stealthy. If anyone picks up this "vulnerability", they could exploit it to do anything, if they have ill intents. − the Charmander looked at the Fighting Type. − What do you think?
The violin thrilled in anxiety in the background, as the drum rolled quietly, but steady, in expectancy along with the other still unrecognizable instruments. Ash hummed almost in tune as he considered his options. The "wheelies" were probably a good idea only on the short run and no one really could leash their emotions for long enough for him to get used to the quirks and false notes of the Aura Orchestra. Besides, the Shadow Raids wouldn't have the five's same mercy. Though, Pikachu was also right to be concerned: there was a risk for him to become too hardened against others' emotions. What can I do...? Oh! Maybe there's something!
− We could trait this as training! The non-jumping part I mean. − Ash finally said, then looked at his best friend. − They are partially right Pikachu, at least for that, plus if every Shadow Raid is going to be like last one, I need to deal with the Aura Orchestra problems before we find ourselves into one while we're inside a dungeon. I don't want to be a burden if we'll have to fight our way out. − he put his paw on the yellow furred head, petting it reassuringly. − But I'm sure I won't become an emotionless robot if you're watching my back. Feel free to shock me if you think I'm changing from my normal self.
The notes on the chord became more prolonged and not so high pitched as Pikachu relaxed. − I'll take your word on that. Do you have an actual plan for this?
− Of course! − Ash jumped eagerly. − During our walk to Collina Fornace I'd like you all to try and emotionally sneak on me. Just small burst of any intense emotions, sans fear.
− Why not fear? It'll be the most common to startle you. − Fang pointed out.
− Yep, But we're in an unknown place and who knows what could happen. − the trainer raised his shoulders matter-of-factly. − Fear's the only one that must be genuine if there's any real danger.
− Oh my Arceus, he's making sense in a serious situation! − Pikachu theatrically gasped, violin dripping of mischief. A sort-of flute (but with a pitch higher than a normal one) immediately accompanied it, while the rest of the Orchestra sounded confused.
− You mean he's jinxing us?! − Poccha dreaded, notes a little more grave to highlight his real nervousness.
− Eh, who knows? There's no Team Rocket here, so maybe not. − the Electric Type commented, leading Ash to frown in thought.
− Was there a talking Meowth? − he asked and the violin made an allegro jingle.
− Yes, he had two more human companions, Jessie and James. Incompetent villains, but decent guys on the inside. They even helped us when necessity arose. − the Mouse Pokémon explained for his and the Teams' benefit... or not. There wasn't surprise in the background.
− Right, you mentioned them back at the camp. They remind me of Gengar. − Lizard commented.
− We met a wild Gengar once too. What did yours do? − the Riolu inquired curious. Better not telling them of their extra-body experience at the haunted tower.
− Well... Rush did mention that I was mistook for an evildoer shape-shifted human and hunted down for that, soooo... − Fang trailed warily before deep grave overdramatic notes were stomped on piano keys. The Emanation Pokémon managed only to flinch, so the Totodile smirked.
− It was you, wasn't it? − the trainer sighed, slightly pouting.
− Indeed I was. − she sniggered, making the others realize that she had been the first to try and test Ash. − Anyway, he did a bad thing that turned him into a Gengar, but dimension- and shape-hopping didn't mollify his tendency to be mean. He even founded a Team called Team Meanies! But he saved me and Lizard in the end.
− We have similar morons too. They call their squad Team Skull. They were just bullies with an inflated ego. − the Torchic huffed, mirth rolling on the drum surface.
− Rush, you did not just make a pun. − the not-quite-a-flute did a thrill of displeasure.
− Why shouldn't I? − Rush made a face at her partner, then turned at the four. − They are three: a Zubat... a Koffing and a Skutank. − she told in lieu of an explanation.
Ash grimaced at the latter two: their species weren't famous for good aromas, but where was the pun...? Oh. − "Inflated" as two of them made "flatulencies"? − he asked, half-curious half-deadpanning. The female Fire Type's snigger was the only answer he received, so he groaned along with Poccha and Lizard, though Pikachu and Fang chuckled.
− Nice one! Though, I would have understood it immediately if I knew what a Skutank was. − the Totodile pointed out, piano conveying her slight annoyance.
− Right! We did say that we would show you the minions of the evil Groudon. − Pikachu remembered and turned to look at his trainer, who was already halfway of getting off the backpack to take out the needed device. The Mouse Pokémon aided him once he had opened the zip by rummaging in the rucksack and picking up the Pokédex. − So there were Baltoy, Claydol and Regirock that you already knew, right? You miss the Golett and Golurk.
− Yes. Since we've got all the walk to Collina Fornace, how about showing us all the Dex? − Lizard proposed eagerly, anticipated by a deep upbeat string-stroked note, probably from something bigger than a violin. What was its name again? Viola? Uh, maybe.
− I'd like that too. Apparently we just know a couple of pokémon more than Team Bitefire, but we miss something too. − Rush agreed with her shared Type.
− We'll start in numerical number then. Humans like to catalogue almost everything. − the violin thrilled in anticipation and Ash found himself smiling along.
The walk was going to be fun!
B~OwO~F
His (vast) ignorance befuddled him: he lived in a world full of pokémon! Despite all of that, humans knew about them more than even old Whiscash! How was it possible?
Lizard sighed in resignation and flared his jealousy a bit to keep Ash on his toes. The five had begun an unspoken challenge on how many times each of them could make the Riolu jump, flinch or yelp, as Rush had managed during a debate on Drowzee. She was still somewhat smug about it.
The ex-human paused in his tale on the different eevolutions they had met to look at the Lizard Pokémon in mild concern. − Are you okay Lizard?
− ...Yes? It was just a test. − he answered a bit confused.
− I know, but this time it felt different somehow. − the trainer left it hanging, probably knowing more or less which emotion was the cause of his concern, but didn't want to out him.
Lizard sighed in resignation. − It's just... it feels a little unfair that humans from a mixed world know more about us ourselves that live in a world full of pokémon.
− Oh, I see... − Ash murmured, then smiled reassuringly. − You shouldn't feel bad, we don't really know every pokémon out there: every day somewhere someone probably discovers one more!
− Besides, in our world pokémon defer from region to region. − Pikachu assisted him. − Before getting out of Kanto, Ash's and my home region, I've never heard or seen anything about either Torchic or Piplup. Plus, I knew only by name about Totodile but never seen one in person. We know so much just because we travelled around a lot.
− But still, even if you didn't them in person, you have the Pokédex to supply your lacks. − Lizard objected.
− Yeah, but it's possible only because there are certain humans who devote themselves in studying and sharing their knowledge. Human technology helps a lot too, but that depends from region to region. − the Electric Type explained. − Some places are more advanced than others and have means to explore places that for some humans or pokémon are unreachable.
− So the real difference is technology. − Poccha deduced.
− Yes and no. There's also the pursue of knowledge, the ambition to seek every information on us. Some humans find us so fascinating that they need to know, so they research. If they're really good, they become Pokémon Professors. − Pikachu corrected. This... actually made Lizard feel a bit better.
− Fascinating? We're just us, there's nothing fancy. − Piplup rebutted, taken aback.
− Are you kidding? Pokémon are the best thing there is! Right girls? − Ash turned to the Totodile and Torchic, who had been silent for the whole debate. Both smiled and nodded eagerly.
− I didn't realize that I felt the same till you said it out loud. − Fang concurred. − Besides, if I agreed to be changed into one but requested to lose all my memories of the human world, it wasn't probably only for not being distracted by thinking of home. Humans aren't as interesting as pokémon. − she commented like it was nothing to worry about.
Lizard boggled. − Fang!
− What? − she looked at him honestly perplexed.
− You've never told me this! We agreed no more secrets between us, sans presents or surprises! − the Charmander felt distraught at her statement. Why did she that about her last home? About humans?
− They were just some solitary nighttime musing that I forgot about the morning after. − she shrugged unabashed. − I bet sometimes happened to you too.
− Yes, but that's not really what concerns me! − Lizard faltered a bit in his steps, distressed. − What you said feels like you don't think so highly of yourself! That's not you and not good at all!
− I feel fine as a Totodile and at being at your side. − she stated seriously. − Our combined wish to stay together as a Team was so strong that was what convinced our patrons to let me come back. I do feel self-confident enough and I know that I don't remember past-me, but this feels like it was meant to be. − she gestured at her scaled self.
− I think I know what this could be. − Rush intervened, startling the duo that had forgot about the audience. She was frowning, probably trying to remember something. − Not far from our Guild, not long ago opened a Café where pokémon gather to chat, relax and wait for missions to start. At Spinda Café you can meet the strangest and most varied kind of people, but the one I'm referring right now to was a Salamance. We ended talking about evolutions, so he shared his situation: while he still had been a Bagon, he had felt so much discomfort for his form that he trained day and night till Luminous Spring let him evolve twice and become a Salamance. Only in that stage he felt satisfied, as if "it was meant to be". − she stated, looking at the Totodile who was looking at her with wide eyes.
− Oh, I remember! I caught the tail of that discussion and asked Chatot if this situation is common. − Poccha went on. − I think it called it "dysphoria"... it's when a person feels dissatisfied with their body? Well anyway, Chatot said that is more common than you can imagine, above all in someone who had just evolved. It could be a transitory phase or be a mental issue or a genuine need of changing. I heard once that in Limestone Cavern dungeon there's a Ditto with a stash of Transfer Orbs that offer to the savvy ones to change species. − he looked up at Team Bitefire. − Maybe this phenomenon happened to Fang too when she had been human.
Said Water Type scratched her scales, walking slowly and pensively, unconsciously making Lizard's heart squeeze. He felt bad that his best friend could have suffered from such discomfort before meeting him. But not anymore! I'll keep her close and protect her even from herself. She saved me and my world, so now it's my turn.
− ...Maybe. But who knows really? I can't ask anyon-... mmh. Maybe Ninetales. When we go back home I could find her. You with me Lizard? − her namesakes shined in the forest light and that made the Charmander relax.
− You can bet! But do me a favor: if your thoughts turn sour again, you tell me and we'll fight it together, okay? − he almost demanded her, seriously. Fang made a small fond smile and briefly shook her head, but then nodded firmly.
− We'll help you too! − Ash eagerly proclaimed and the others joined too.
− Thanks... So! Where were we before these depressing thoughts? − the Totodile piped up.
− We jumped to Leafeon and Glaceon when we were talking about Espeon and Umbreon, I think. − Pikachu hummed.
− Yes, you're right. Let's get back at it. − Poccha agreed, interested.
− Okay, next... Murkrow. − the Riolu read and the silence/knowledge-filling-chat resumed.
Do you wanna save the game?

SAVED.
* You probably won't believe me, but even in Italian they managed to pun Ash's name.
English Version (courtesy of Bulbapedia):
Disturb not the harmony of fire, ice or lightning,
lest these titans wreak destruction upon the world in which they clash.
Though the water's great guardian shall arise to quell the fighting,
alone its song will fail, lest the earth shall turn to ash.
O Chosen One, into thine hands bring together all three.
Their treasures combined tame the Beast of the Sea.
Italian Version (I remember it by heart, don't ask):
Di fuoco, ghiaccio e fulmine l'armonia giammai va offesa,
o il mondo soltanto rovine dai tre titani dovrà difendere.
Il gran custode delle acque verrà allora a placar contesa,
ma il suo canto solitario fallirà e in campo sarà un forte a scendere.
O prescelta creatura, stringi nelle tue mani quei tre,
e come una sola pedina i loro congiunti tesori domeranno la Bestia Marina.
(More or less) literal meaning of the Italian underlined phrase is "a strong one will descend in battle", but the start of "descend in" (the bold letters) in Italian sounds like "Ash". So yeah, I just wanted to let you know the geniality and silliness of our translators. xD
A/N. Happy birthday Mewtwo! (And Nico Robin, but that's another fandom. xP)
Moreover given that yesterday here in Italy our annual music Festival of Sanremo began, I thought that given the Aura Orchestra this chapter fitted the date. *\(ΦωΦ)/* (Plus I'm still high as a Rayquaza from the release of the Epic Battle of History of "Ashes of the Past" by Saphronet and Kingdom Hearts 3, so I'm writing while surfing on that tsunami of epicness.)
Did you get every instrument in the Aura Orchestra? And if you did, did you noticed what I did with Team Bitefire? XD After all the original duo I got the inspiration from is the best Guys duet on Utube... Still, I will confirm or deny your comments next chapter where I'll publish who is what more clearly (apart from Ash himself, since he can't read his own Aura, unfortunately).
So... I'm not sure if the discussion about dysphoria should be considered a trigger, but if it is, then I'm sorry I didn't warn you at the start of the chapter. At first, I admit it wasn't in the plans, but Fang had other ideas and took control of the keyboard! (xD) I mean, I know that because of metagame and a healthy dose of feelings the PMD R&B protagonists' Team were reunited in the postgame, but thinking about it, only a person who either felt to have nothing worth returning to or didn't feel comfortable in any other shape or form would make that choice despite the longing for the dungeon world.
At least this is my interpretation and I quite like the system of species-change I came up with. Speaking in metagame-tenses, the Ditto is the same one Team Charm met in one of the Special Episodes of Explorers of Sky. It's the Dungeon Boss, sole pokémon in a floor and guardian of a Time Gear, so if someone comes and wants to change, Ditto Tranforms into the chosen pokémon, uses the Transfer Orb and let the target decide if the choice had been the right one. If the response is positive, Ditto uses the influence of the Time Gear to make the change permanent, if not the pokémon turns back and the process is repeated. (Of course there's either to pay a fee or to do a mission for Ditto.)
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my world/background building attempt, plus we're on our way to Collina Fornace! Next time we'll probably meet Hekla the Entei (if my character don't change my plans again) and we'll see who will gets her Embleteora.
Thank you for all the favorites, follows, reviews and the community, type ya next time!
EDIT: A friend of mine pointed out that because of the roles each magma-related dungeon had, the names should have been switched. So now Vulcano Fornace is Vulcano Fucina and Collina Fucina is Collina Fornace. Sorry for the confusion. (๑=ㅂ=๑|||)
[storyreader21: you got me! The Shadows are Heartless, so plagiarism! (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
... xD
Okay, jokes aside, I also noticed the similarity, but a bit too late (read: I had already published one or two chapters) so, while their origin has been totally different from the start, I modelled the appearance of the Shadows (still unplanned at that time) to look the complete opposite of Heartless and to be related to their actual origin. Feel free to try and guess what it is! Oh, and by the way, to be sincere there will be some references to KH, but not in the way you're thinking about... You'll see in one or two arcs in the future... (I'm evil, I know! \_(ツ)_/)
I'm glad that you liked last chapter, hope you've enjoyed this too!]
