Roughly 2 months later, the family of three had settled into a steady home life and for the first time in Lena's entire life, she found herself not caring very much about L-corp or anything to do with it. She did certain things from home when it could not be handled by her other executives, but otherwise Lena would often happily tell Kara that if the place burned to the ground tomorrow she would gladly watch it go up. Lena loved her work and cared far too much for her employees to truly mean that, but Kara always laughed.
On this day, Lena had to go into the office because she left files in there for a project she was working on at home and she wanted to gather some other things. Kara had joined Clark at the fortress for some research the two of them had been working on and Lena said she would bring Charlie with her since she planned on being in and out within an hour. Lena packed up files and put back some she was done with and as she sealed her files she checked over her shoulder to see Charlie napping in her pop-up play pen with Elsa just outside it. The silence was broken when a familiar, but very unwelcome voice sprung up.
"And here I was thinking you were home playing house Lena." Lena turned to see Morgan Edge in the doorway and she never wished harder for Kara to not be on the other side of the world. With her normal cold expression she glared at the pest in her office.
"Morgan. What do I owe the displeasure? Better question: how did you get in my building when I made it clear you were not ever welcome back on the grounds?"
"Where there is a will there is a way Lena."
"I suppose. Now if you'll kindly leave."
"Now why would I do that, when you have something I want." Lena watched as watched Morgan moved his hand behind is back and produced a small handgun that he kept right against his pants leg. This was not Lena's first brush with Morgan, and it was certainly not her first encounter with a would-be assassin who wanted her work for themselves; no doubt with nefarious intentions. This was, however, the first time she faced these things with her child asleep in the same room and for the first time in Lena Luthor's life, she found herself honestly afraid of what might happen.
"Take whatever you want and get out of this building." Lena nodded to her file cabinets behind Morgan and he seemed pleased.
"Seems motherhood has made you softer than I thought. What I want isn't up here though, it's in your lab and I need you to get in there so lets you and I take a walk." During this exchange Elsa had woken up and was sitting very still in front of Charlie who was still fast asleep. The dog made no noise, but her eyes were locked on Morgan and Lena was fairly certain that if Morgan tried anything she would more than likely watch her dog try her best to take down an armed assailant.
"I'll go with you, but put the gun away around my daughter. She has been through enough; she doesn't need this on top of it."
"How about she comes with us? That way you don't get any bright ideas about signaling for help or running away." Morgan turned toward the play pen and was met with Elsa showing all her teeth and growling in a way Lena had never heard before.
"That would be a bad move Morgan. That dog will die protecting her and so will I, so I hope you brought enough ammo because we won't go down quietly. And if I die, you won't get whatever tech of mine you seem to think is worth this spectacle.
Morgan snarled and raised the gun toward Lena, "pick her up and let's go. Your mutt doesn't scare me, and your wife isn't here to get in my way by interrupting this little meeting with lunch or whatever. So move, now!"
"Ok, so now you've made two very bad mistakes. Your first, was coming in here and waving a gun at me." Lena kept her cool and narrowed her eyes on Morgan.
"And what pray tell, is the second, Luthor?" Lena smiled and tilted her head, "you called my dog a mutt and she doesn't like that." Morgan was shocked out of his narrow focus when seemingly out of now where the dog lunged at him and had his hand and part of the gun in her mouth with a grip that showed no mercy. By the time Elsa was off the ground, Lena was rushing for Charlie and quickly ducking her in the panic room and using her retina scan to lock the door. By the time she turned around, Elsa was still pulling on Morgan's hand and his blood was already dripping on her floor. Lena saw Morgan raise his other arm and strike the dog hard on her shoulder which caused the dog to bite down harder, but Lena heard her yelp even thought her jaw was locked on Morgan's hand still.
"Morgan, drop the gun or she won't stop. This is over!"
"Like hell!" Morgan hit the dog in the same place again and the pain was enough for Elsa to fall back and lose her hold on the gun and on Morgan.
"Your security team is really lacking Lena. I would say do better next time, but I don't think there will be one." Morgan switched hands and leveled the gun at Lena and Lena prepared herself for the sound and pain that she assumed would come next. The sound she certainly heard, but she felt nothing. Only when she opened her eyes did she see Alex standing in the doorway still holding her gun level, only to quickly holster it and rush to kick Morgan's gun away. Lena heard Alex talking but it was like she was underwater and her only two thoughts were Charlie and Elsa. Lena knew Charlie was safe for now, so she fumbled over to where the dog was curled up, still whimpering from her injuries and Lena broke down and sobbed into the dog's fur; grateful for the protection she gave and terrified of her being gravely hurt. Alex appeared second later holding Charlie, having been given access to the panic room some time ago. The toddler was awake, but sleepy so she gently pulled Lena away from the dog and handed Charlie to Lena, while keeping her arms wrapped around them both.
Lena could feel the weight of the toddler in her arms and that was the last thing she felt before her body shut down and she passed out. Alex had already been shouting into her coms for back up and EMTs and Lena passing out was not part of that deal. She held Charlie close to her and just talked to the little girl in soothing tone, never allowing her to pick her head up off her chest for fearing of seeing a man bleeding to death over Alex's shoulder or her mother passed out in Alex's lap. Eventually, help arrived, and Alex had her team take Lena first and she had another member of her team pick up Elsa and get her to a vet with orders to stay with the dog.
Alex kept Charlie in her arms and rode in a car behind the medical team who had Lena. Once at the DEO, she got Charlie set up in her office and had Winn come in and personally watch the toddler while she went to check on Lena, all the while frantically trying to get ahold of Kara.
The agent who went with Elsa reported back to Alex, that the dog had a broken shoulder from being hit and they were going to make sure it was set and then send her home with pain meds and instructions to not engage in very physical activities for about 8 weeks. Alex told the agent to bring the dog to the DEO as soon as she was cleared, and Alex then entered the med bay to check on Lena. One of the doctor handed her a tablet with Lena's vitals.
"Far as we can tell, it was adrenaline wearing off. That coupled with a fight or flight response and protecting the child, her body put its foot down the minute she knew Charlie, the dog and she were safe because you were there. Vitals are normal, I hooked her up with some fluids just to be on the safe side and drew some blood for a basic panel just make sure we cover our normal bases. I figured whenever Supergirl returns she would be rather…upset if we did not do a comprehensive screening of Ms. Luthor." Alex nodded because the other doctor was right; Kara was already going to have a fit and feel bad she was gone when something bad happened, this would be enough to hopefully assure her that Lena was indeed safe.
"Send the results to Lena's contact so she doesn't feel like we are snooping around. That way she has the medical info, and we can break it down for her if need be. Any idea when she will wake up?"
"She was fussing at me while I was drawing the blood so I would guess she is awake now." Alex smiled and walked into the room Lena was in and sure enough she was sitting up in the bed.
"Hey kid."
"Where's Charlie?" Lena almost barked it, not meaning to and Alex knew that. "She is in my office playing with Winn. Couldn't be safer."
"And my dog?" Alex smiled bigger, "she is a little banged up, but she will be fine in time. One of my people is bringing her back from the vet as we speak. And before you ask, we contacted Kara, but it's hard when both her and Clark are at the Fortress because even when she gets the alerts it'll take even her about 20 minutes to get here, but I bet she will check in once she gets the alerts we have all sent. In the meantime, once Elsa is here I think I should take you all home."
"Is it safe for us to go back to our home? I doubt Morgan thought that far, but still."
"My people went in and cleared it already, but if you would prefer I can take you to mom's. Lots of space for everyone and get you away from the city. Have some space to process things and when Kara is home you guys will be able to just spend some time together as a family." Lena nodded and Alex messaged her team to get the vans ready.
"Once those fluids are done you are cleared to leave, and I will make sure Kara knows we are heading to mom's so she can meet us there." Lena nodded and looked up at Alex, "is he dead Alex?"
Alex sighed and nodded, "yeah he is Lena. I would say I am sorry, but I'm not."
"You won't get in trouble will you?"
"With whom Lena? To the rest of the world I am FBI and there was a man pointing a gun at you and a child. No one is gonna question this and if they do, black ops tend to make things disappear quick. Not to mention there are cameras in your office to prove that a threat was clear and real. I did what needed to be done to insure no further loss of life. So don't worry about Morgan Edge or any of that shit. Rest for a bit longer and in the meantime I will have Winn bring Charlie in ok?" Lena nodded and ran her hand through her hair before laying back in the bed. Alex spent the next hour getting their things ready to go to Eliza's house and by the time Lena was returning from the med bay with Charlie in her arms they were ready.
"Hey, so Elsa is in a car downstairs and you, Charlie and I will ride in the other car ok?" Lena nodded and followed Alex out of the building and into the garage and quickly got Charlie in a car seat before climbing in next to her. Alex drove the second car and would occasionally look in the rear-view mirror at Lena who was either looking out the window blankly or had her eyes glued to Charlie. As they neared the house, Alex checked her phone hoping Kara would have responded, but saw nothing. After pulling into her mother's driveway she quickly figured out why.
Kara was standing in civilian clothes in the driveway, looking like she was about to burst. Alex put the car in park and was about to tell Lena, but she clearly didn't need to if the door flying open and Lena all but throwing herself out of the car and towards Kara was any clue. The CEO ran to her wife and launched herself into Kara arms, wrapping her legs around the hero's waist and clinging to Kara tightly enough that the hero actually felt it. Kara easily held her wife up and through tears whispered into her hairline that she was ok. Alex got her niece out of her car seat and the second she saw Kara she tried to wiggle free of Alex and go to Kara. Seeing this Kara gently placed Lena on her feet, not letting go of her totally and reached out for Charlie with her free arm. Once Charlie was in her arms, Alex saw a stream of tears fall down Kara's face as she held Lena tightly to her and Charlie as close to both her and Lena as she could.
Kara looked up to Alex, "where's Elsa?"
"The car with her is about 10 minutes out, I'll bring her in once it gets here. You guys go in and I will grab the bags ok?" Kara nodded and made her way inside with Lena and Charlie while Alex unpacked. Once the bags were upstairs and the family of three was snuggled on the couch with Eliza watching closely from the kitchen, Alex noticed the other car pull up and she met her agent outside to carry Elsa in the house. The dog was still clearly sedated from the meds she had been given and part of her fur had been shaved to give her an IV, but otherwise she just looked tired. The second Alex came through the door Kara handed Charlie to Lena and rushed over to the dog, taking her out of Alex's arms and placing her on the other couch before leaning in and kissing the dog's face.
"You took such good care of our girls didn't you sweet girl. I'm so sorry you got hurt, but I love you so so much for keeping them safe. Such a good girl." Kara didn't think she would cry this much over the dog getting hurt, but the thought of her dog having been the difference between her family being ok and them not surviving shook Kara and made her forever grateful for the dog. Kara stood up and brushed tears away before turning around and hugging Alex hard.
"Thank you." Kara couldn't say much else through the tears and she didn't need to. Alex held her sister and let her cry until Kara pulled away.
"They are safe Kara and Charlie didn't see anything, so everything is ok. Alright? Just let yourself relax and just soak up the time with them." Kara nodded and returned to the couch, enjoying the feeling of Lena's full weight leaning against her while Charlie nodded off in Lena's lap. Kara focused on Lena's heartbeat and Charlie's and that allowed her to feel more connected to them as they sat there. When Charlie fell back asleep, Lena reluctantly handed her over to Eliza who was going to put her down for a nap in the play pen so she and Alex could watch her while they made dinner.
"Why don't you two go upstairs and get some rest? Just the two of you. Alex and I can handle Charlie and Elsa." Lena was about to politely object, but Kara didn't give her a chance and scooped her up bridal style and carried her upstairs. Once in the guest bedroom Kara set Lena down and just waited for Lena to tell her what she needed.
"Lena, baby, you need to talk to me. Just tell me what you need to feel safe." Lena ran her hands up and down Kara's forearms, something she often did to soothe herself on hard days and this certainly qualified. Lena still felt like her thoughts were racing and her anxiety was through the roof and she was struggling to believe that things were over, and that Kara was here with her and not far away.
"I just…I need..." Lena hated asking for what she needed, and Kara was always patient with her.
"Just take your time baby and tell me what you need when you are ready ok? It's ok if you don't know Lena."
"I know what I need, but it'll sound stupid."
"I promise it won't." Lena looked up and locked eyes with Kara. "I want you to make love to me."
Kara blinked several times because that was not what she thought Lena would be asking for from her.
"Lena, you don't ever have to ask me twice for that, but can you tell me why? You always tell me I can't use sex to avoid feelings."
"It's not that. My brain is going so fast and I want to protect Charlie even though she's safe and I keep thinking that you still aren't with me even though you are in front of my face and I need to feel connected to something real and I need to know that you are here with me and I just fucking need you, please." Lena's tears started up again and Kara pulled her back against her body and waited for those tears to die down.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there Lena."
"You can't always be there Kara and I'm not mad. I just need to feel this connection that I only have with you." Kara nodded and the two began kissing rather intensely while still standing at the foot of the bed. Kara slowly undressed Lena till she was down to her underwear and as Lena climbed on the bed, Kara quick shed everything save for her own underwear. As Kara joined Lena, she kissed a path up from Lena's stomach up to her chest and the sharp intake of breath she was met with when she took Lena's breast in her mouth spurred her to repeat the action on the other side. Lena arched her back, trying to get more of Kara against her own body, but Kara's free hand held Lean down with her hands above her head. Kara kissed up her neck and she whispered in Lena's ear.
"I want you to listen to me ok baby? I want you to keep your hands right here and just let me make you feel good ok. Just focus on what I make you feel ok." Lena nodded and was met with a heated kiss before Kara went back to her breasts. Lena was already on a high and she wanted to reach out for Kara to feel more of her, but she kept her hands wrapped around the headboard posts.
"Kara, please."
"Tell me what you need Lena."
"You…I need you to touch me." Kara smiled, "and where should I touch you? Maybe here." Kara ran her hand over Lena's stomach.
"Or maybe here." This time her hand grazed over her leg.
"Or maybe you meant right here." Kara quickly slipped her hand between Lena's legs and the amount of wetness she was met with allowed her quickly slip inside of Lena, earning her a sharp gasp from her wife who was still white knuckle gripping the headboard.
"Is this where you want me Lena?" Lena nodded her head furiously and Kara corrected her. "Come on baby, I need to hear you say it. Just tell me."
"Yes, Jesus fucking Christ yes that is where I want you." Kara grinned and kissed Lena, "such a good girl telling me what you need." This of course caused Lena's hip to buck up because of all the things Lena liked in bed, being called a good girl was one things that drove her mad and Kara never failed to use it to both their advantages. Kara watched as Lena bit her lip to try and not scream since their family was downstairs, but Kara continued a steady pace, all the while offering Lena praise which did nothing, but make the CEO more aroused.
"I can feel how close you are baby. Just let go and let me make you feel good ok. You don't have to hold back. I am right here ,and I've got you ok? I've got my good girl and you are safe with me." After a few more pumps of Kara's hand, Lena's body arched off the bed and she desperately clung to Kara for dear life as well as physical support. After the aftershocks of her orgasm stopped Kara laid Lena down and soon joined her on the bed just enjoying the quiet moment together.
"Feel better love?" Lena nodded and turned toward Kara, snuggling into her chest and letting Kara hold her.
"Much better. I just needed to feel that connection again and feel grounded in something real that wasn't colored by trauma if that makes sense."
"It does. I am sorry Lena. I should've been nearby and then none of this would have happened."
"Kara it probably still would have and if you had been here then what, what if things would have been the same or worse. I'm safe, Charlie is safe, and the dog saved the day so by my standards we did ok today." Kara sighed and nodded knowing that Lena was right; for them, the way things ended today was good enough and good enough would have to be enough for everyone.
