CH 80

Maxine showed up at the hospital and hugged him. "Mike, I still can't believe that you're alive." MacGyver was watching what was going on from the side of the room.

"I told you, Maxine, that I'm fine."

"Then why are you here?"

"MacGyver said I needed x rays 'cause of my chest wounds."

"What, what did they do to you?"

"It will be in his report, Commander," MacGyver said to her.

"Commander Flynn," a woman said.

"Yes?"

"This way, Sir."

"Excuse me, Maxine, MacGyver." Mike follows the woman through a door.

MacGyver looks at Maxine until she turns to her. "Commander White, why are you here? Commander Flynn was going to NAVCOM when he was finished here."

"I was worried about him."

"As you can see, he's ok; you didn't need to come."

"Just what are you saying?"

"That you're in love with him, and don't deny it, it is written all over your face. I saw the way you looked at him the last time we walked into the bullpen."

"That, Petty Officer, is no concern of yours."

"Maybe not mine, but I think that his wife would agree with me."

"What are you talking about? Mike's not married!" she was shocked by what MacGyver had said.

"He is; notice his left hand."

"June," turning around, she smiled.

"Jim!" they hug and kiss.

"I got your voicemail message; how is Mike?"

"He's having chest x rays."

"How's Kate?"

"She's ecstatic that he was found alive."

"He's one lucky guy."

"That he is, luck of the Irish." Jim kisses her.

"Going to be home tonight?"

"Yes, I'll be home. Feel like chicken stir-fried?"

"With egg noodles? Of course."

"I'll pick up the ingredients on the way home and cook that up with a dessert."

"I'll be looking forward to it."

"I know you are." They kiss once more.

"See you home," he said, turns and walks away. MacGyver turned back to Maxine.

"Who was that captain?"

"Captain Jim Roth, SAS. Also, my husband, Commander."

"How does he know Mike?"

"Hammersley was a taxi service for the SAS almost three years ago; that's how I met Jim."

"I see."

Mike returned from x-ray and went over to them. "The doctor checked my x rays; it's just bruising. I'll be sore for a little while; otherwise, I'm good to go."

"That's good news, Sir. Shall we return to Hammersley so we can get changed and let the crew know?"

"Sure. I'll see you in half an hour, Maxine."

"I'll give you a lift, Mike," Maxine offered, and MacGyver raised her eyebrows.

"I'll be fine Maxine, I need to talk to MacGyver on our way back anyway." Then he and MacGyver walk towards the exit.

MacGyver pulled Mike aside, "Maxine's in love with you, Mike, so be careful."

"What do you mean she is in love with me? You didn't…."

"Yes, I did, she avoided the question, and with the look on her face, it tells me that she is. And also she was shocked that she didn't know that you are married. Tell me what happens."

As they stepped onto Hammersley, some of the crew was on their way to enjoy their shore leave.

That night June and Jim enjoyed a quiet night at home with dinner and an early night. Two days later, Jim and June were leaving for Sydney when Jim's phone rings. He answers it while June closes and zips up her bag, then finishes with Jim's. He got off the phone, and she knew the look.

"Mission or meeting?" She asks.

"Meeting, it's important."

"I understand."

"Look, why don't you fly down taking our bags with you, and I'll catch the next available flight."

"Alright, I'll make the call first, then you can take me to the airport."

"Sorry about this," pulling her into his arms and hugging her.

"It's, ok honey, it's the army for you and the navy for me."

"True," he gives her a kiss before going to get changed into his uniform, and June makes a phone call.

Half an hour later, Jim dropped June off at the airport, giving her a hug and kiss before leaving for his meeting. She walked into the terminal carrying bags in hand.

Later that afternoon, June was in her hotel room, she texted Jim the room number and told him that she was leaving to go to the reunion and that she would meet him there.

Getting out of the taxi, she could hear songs she remembered from the eighties.

Walking inside, she follows the music until she comes to a large hall where the school reunion is being held. The room was packed with people everywhere. She noticed the reunion banner hanging on one wall. Looking around the room, she spotted a man and a woman sitting at one of the tables and went over to them.

"Yes?" the woman asked. "Name please"

"June Roth." The woman looks down at the list, found June's name then looked up.

"I'm sorry, but there's no June Roth on here."

"James Roth, he goes by Jim; I'm his wife June."

"What?" the guy sitting next to her at the table said in a shocked tone.

"Is there something wrong, Dean?"

"You can't be Jim's wife. His wife is already here."

"I can guarantee you… Dean, I am Jim's wife. Who said that she is Jim's wife?"

"Have you got proof? And where is Jim?" Dean asked.

"Just before Jim and I left for the airport in Cairns to fly down here, he was called into an emergency meeting. He will be here, and as for proof…."

She got her phone out of her bag and tapped it, and showed the couple their wedding photo, the one with him in his uniform. "You look beautiful in your wedding dress," the woman said.

"Thank you." Then she tapped her phone, showing them the signed marriage license, enlarging it so they could see the writing. When they saw her and Jim's name and knew that she was telling the truth.

"You're telling the truth, alright."

"So, who's pretending to be Jim's wife?"

"Kim Simpson. She said that she and Jim got married a year ago."

"Well, that's bull shit. Jim broke up with her after graduation when he realized that she had been spreading lies."

"I can't believe she lied to us about this and some of the others who are here as well," said the woman.

"Just be careful of what you say with her around and don't trust her; she's dangerous."

"How do you mean?" Dean asked.

"She's got a wicked jealous streak. Has she been asking for Jim?"

"Yes, she has."

June looks around the room then back to the couple.

"Why would she ask for him if she was married to him. Think about it. Let the others know the truth, please, but don't let Kim know that they know the truth, that she's not married to Jim."

"Ok, sure."

"So, where are the high school photos?" June asked while grinning.

"Over, there," Dean said, pointing to the wall on the other side of the hall.

"Thanks; I can't wait to see what Jim looked like as a teenager." They laugh.

"You haven't seen any photos of him as a teenager?" Dean asked.

"No, we don't get up this way much because of work schedules."

"What do you and Jim do up in Cairns?" the woman asked.

"Jim's in the SAS. He's a captain. I'm a Petty Officer, Royal Australian Navy; June Roth. I serve on HMAS Hammersley."

"So, You're in the Navy," Dean said.

"Yes, Sir."

"Have you been overseas?"

"Yes, I did a tour over in Irag."

"Is that where you met Jim?"

June laughed, "no, it was at the Navy docks, he was on the wharf, and I was on Hammersley. I yelled out to him…. 'Captain, how many men will be on board' he replied back 'eight that including me'. We finally met face to face a few hours later when I was doing some exercises on the boat deck, and he and his men showed up. There was a challenge. He lost."

"What was the challenge?" the woman asked."

"Your back against the wall and holding onto the handrail above you. You raise your legs until they're at three o'clock, then lower them. Then raise your knees to your chest, straighten them out to three o'clock, bring them back into your chest, and lower them. And do it over again. Jim lasted fifteen minutes."

"Wow, no wonder you're so fit," the woman said.

"Thanks. After Jim lost the challenge, he asked me out to dinner, and we've been together ever since."

"My goodness, that's an amazing story."

"It's all true. We got engaged nine months later on New Year's Eve, New Year's day he purposes to me, I said yes, we got married nine months after that."

"Kids?"

"None yet."

"Thanks for sharing that with us. We can see by the wedding photo how happy you both are."

"Thank you."

"Enjoy your time here."

"Oh, I will soon as Jim gets here," June said smiling.

June leaves the table and walks over to where the school photos are hung. She looked for the ones that had Jim in them. When she found Jim's high school photo, she got her phone out and took a picture of it. It was his final year at high school and he had a mullet hairdo like with some of the other guys. Then June saw what Kim looked like back then. She had wavy shoulder-length brown hair and heaps of makeup, and large earrings.

Finished looking at the photos, she walked over to the bar and got herself an orange juice, feeling that it was too early to have any alcohol. Then June looked around for Ben and his wife, Emma. Spotting them, she walked over to them as they were talking to a couple.

"Ben, Emma" they turn to her and smile.

"June! You made it! Where's Jim?" Ben asked as they hugged.

"Army's got no sense of timing. He was called in for an emergency meeting an hour before we were flying down here, but he is on his way. I received a text from him before I left the hotel."

"Good, looking forward to seeing him. Oh! June Roth, this is Colin and Liz Lobb; this is Jim's wife."

"Hi, nice to meet you both."

"You too," Colin said, looking shocked as they shook hands.

"What's wrong, Colin?" Ben asked.

"It's Kim. She said that she was married to Jim."

"What? That's not true?" Emma said.

"You're really married to Jim?" Liz asked June.

"Yes, I am. Ben here was supposed to be groomsmen at our wedding, but he had an accident and couldn't make it to our wedding," June explained.

"Why would Kim say she married Jim?"

"She has a sick obsession with Jim. She even tried to kill Jim and June a couple of years ago," Emma explained.

"What? Really?" Colin and Liz were shocked.

"It's true, it happened the day after Jim's brother Ben's wedding. A hit and run, we saw her driving towards us at high speed. We were running to safety when she hit us with her car and drove off. We were fortunate to be alive."

"Why isn't she in prison?"

"She was, but her lawyer got her a retrial. Jim and I didn't even receive a notification. She got off cause some doctor told the judge that she went off her meds that caused her to act out like she did. Which was total bull shit since she is not on any medication. The doctor was a fake; I had him checked out. He had his license revoked, and he was facing several charges which the judge didn't know about at the time."

"So, she got off scot-free?" Liz asked.

"Yeah, I don't know how she managed to pull it off, so be careful of what you say around her."

"Don't worry, we'll stay clear of her," Colin said. Then another couple comes over and joins them.

An hour and a half later, June felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist and someone kissing her neck, "If you're not, my husband back off, or you'll be on your back in seconds." June says."Shame there's no bed here for you to do that to me." June giggled then turned around, wrapping her arms around Jim's neck kissing him passionately, which drew a lot of attention from those nearby.

When they broke apart. "You finally made it."

"I see you've been talking to a couple mates."

"Yes, and getting some great stories about you."

"Really…"

"Yes. My favorite, Jim, is Kim's here and telling everyone that you are married to her."

Jim was shocked, "she what?"

"It's true, mate," one of the guys said. Jim turned around and smiles at the guys

"Hey," he said smiling, giving them a hug. "It's great to see you guys, so what is true?"

"What Kim was saying, she had us believing it, but June, she set us straight and even showed us your wedding photos."

"June is one amazing woman."

"She's more than that to you, Jim; you're one lucky guy."

"Right you are."

"I was warning them about Kim," June said.

"Warning them?"

"About her lies."

"Ok, do many know?"

"Yeah, most everyone knows."

"Huh… Would you like another drink, June?"

"Yes, thanks, I'll have whatever you're having," passing her empty glass to Jim.

"I'll be back," Jim went to the bar while June carried on talking to Colin and the others.
