Sam was running hard, cursing himself for letting the werewolf escape the net-trap he had spent hours painstakingly setting up. It was designed to withstand the power of many creatures' assault, and had done so before. Either this werewolf had eaten the Gauls' magical potion, or Sam had made a mistake with the trap.
He felt the hairs of his arms raise up, and he could almost feel the beast jumping on him. Trusting his instinct, the fifteen years old threw himself on the ground, taking care of not landing badly on a root or a rock as he executed a perfect dive roll and thus avoided the enraged werewolf who landed several feet behind him, unable to stop his course in time. Sam added a pulse of telekinesis to keep the werewolf on the ground a few more seconds as he took up his run toward the edge of the forest and the impala.
Sam silently thanked Dean for not letting him slack up on his drills despite Dad's absence. He had spotted the impala, thought it was further into the forest than planned.
Sam ran straight past it, smirking as he heard the loud thud that indicated that the car had ran into the werewolf pursuing him, effectively knocking him out.
"That was too close Sammy," reproached Dean.
Sam did not jump in surprise as his brother suddenly appeared next to him. It had been years since Dean had managed to sneak up on him.
"The trap did not hold him, so I went to plan B," answered Sam with a shrugged.
"I figured when came back screaming with a wolf hot on your heels," drawled his brother.
"I was not screaming," replied Sam with a roll of his eyes.
"You were screaming inside. So loudly I could hear you," answered Dean with a smirk.
"No matter what you pretend, you cannot read my mind, Dean," said Sam with a stern look.
"Who says I haven't developed the ability while I was bored waiting for you to show up?" asked Dean with mocked affront.
"Just because you're a kind of spirit doesn't mean you have special powers, Dean."
"You have special powers, it could run in the family, and as I will soon turn twenty, I might be coming into my inheritance," answered his brother with a winning smile.
Sam shook his head fondly. He did not know how his brother managed to be so light, so full of life when his body was comatose and had not moved from his bed for almost ten years. It already was a miracle that he still got to have Dean with him. He was not sure he believed the story his brother had told him, but despite going through many of Bobby's books, he had never found a more satisfying explanation for his brother's state of existence.
Dean had been in a comatose state thanks to a Shtriga who had come to take Sam away when he was six years old. His brother's body had been in a bad shape, and the doctors had expected him to slowly fade away as his mind shut down, unable to bear the pain, and his body failed to heal all that was broken. According to Dean, in what Sam personally thought seemed a lot like a morphine induced dream, the impala had visited Dean and offered an exchange. Cars did not feel pain like human, so she had proposed to switch place with Dean until his brother's body was healed and his mind could bear to come back and wake up. Until then, Dean's mind would inhabit the impala.
It seemed impossible, yet, from the moment Dean claimed that the switch had been made, Sam had known his brother's was not in his body anymore. That was an altogether different can of worms as Sam realised he had powers. He was different from Dad, Bobby and every hunter he had ever met. He could sense supernatural creatures, he could use telekinesis and…
"Come on Sammy, hurry up and do your mumbo jumbo before he wakes up."
Right. His mumbo jumbo.
Sam carefully approached the unmoving form of the werewolf, careful to remain out of reach in case it was a ruse.
"Quickly Sammy, before I need to crash him into another poor tree."
Sam focused on the werewolf. On feeling the wolf inside the human body. In his mind, he tugged at the monster part until it separated from the human part. The wolf part was strong. The Man must have been infected several years ago. How did he last so long?
He was sweating with the exhaustion of working his power, but in one push, the monster part was physically torn from the human body and burst into nothingness.
Yes, Sam could also banish ghosts and heal werewolves. Dean was certain he could do a lot more, they just needed to try other things out.
Of course, they had to be careful not to let Dad and Bobby suspect anything. After Dean had went comatose, Dad had come directly to Bobby who had opened his home to them. They had stopped moving around, Dad only taking jobs who were a few hours away and allowed him to be back on time for Sam's homework review as well as his hunter training. Sam had quickly realised that something was weird with Dean's body and the impala. Thankfully, he had not said anything to Dad and Bobby, or they might have exorcised Dean. Instead, he had looked through Bobby's books to understand what was wrong with his brother. He had settled on Dean's mins being outside his body like a kind of ghost, and had then work hard to get on contact with him. It had not worked, and after several weeks of failure, Sam had been on the verge of panic, with Dad and Bobby mad with worry, as he could not reach his brother and refused to tell them why he was so worked up. Bobby had even managed to get Dad to take Sam to a psychologue who knew about the supernatural.
Thankfully, Dean had saved the day as he always did. He had managed to appear to Sam, like a kind of astral projection. Only Sam ever saw him, no doubt because of his powers. And after several months, Dean was also able to touch Sam, which had helped a lot as he had been able to help Sam with training, though they had to be careful not to tip Dad or Bobby off. To Sam's surprise but relief, Dean's astral projection had grown up as Dean's body had. It would have been awkward to have his brother stuck as a ten years old.
It had been even harder for Dean to get used to moving the impala and learning how to help during a hunt, if only to protect Dad when he was in over his head and avoid several messy injuries. From the moment Sam had been allowed on easy hunts, they had gotten very creative at luring supernatural creatures in the open, away from their caves of bottom of the lakes. And Dean had come up with all kind of ways to explore Sam's powers.
"Come on Sammy, we need to get this guy to the hospital discretely and then be back for Dad's check in, move!" urged Dean as he disappeared.
His brother could not both astral project and move the impala.
Sam nodded. Using his telekinesis to lighten the ex-werewolf body, he put him in the back-seat then sat down at the driver's seat.
Dean would not let him drive after he had used his powers, but they would not have a car without a driver on the road. They were already bending the law with Sam as the driver, but it was not that uncommon in this rural area to have teenagers drive on short distance to help out their parents.
Dean was right, they needed to hurry not to miss Dad check in. Last year, for the first time since Dean's injuries, Dad had began to go on longer hunts. And last week, he had left with bobby to join several hunters as they were tracking the monster who had killed Dean and Sam's mother. A demon. With yellow eyes. Sam was glad that Bobby was with Dad because he would made sure their Dad did not get stuck on revenge and forgot that Dean and Sam needed him too. Sam sometimes felt a twinge of guilt when he wondered what their lives would have looked like if Dean had not been injured so severely all their years before. He did not think he wanted to know.
Sam sigh as Dean's driving lulled him into a light nap, as it always did when his brother drove. He really wish the impala would hurry up and help his brother's body heal so they would once more be a proper family. Especially if Dad managed to kill the demon.
