Walter's Roster: Volume 3

Hello, my name is Walter Dornez. I have recently joined a ragtag group of militia called the Shepherds. Despite being a Shepherd for only a grand total of 4 days, I have already learned much about my fellow Shepherds. I have decided to document my observations in a roster that shall be open to the entire militia. Please note, if you are not part of the Shepherds, or have not gained special permission from either Chrom or myself, I will not hesitate to kill you for peeking into this book. If you are a Shepherd, do not complain about the description I have for each of you. Deny it all you want, I am accurate.

~Walter Dornez, The Angel of Death, July 19, Age 2609

As of this moment, the Roster is closed to everyone but myself. This is in part due to the overwhelming amount of complaints I received from those less than pleased with their entries. This is also due to the privy information that has been written within this Roster.

I have also taken the time to fix any age disrepencies, as well adding the current year/age.

~Walter Dornez, The Angel of Death, August 26, Age 2609

This may be my final update to the roster, considering just how close to death I am. I plan on handing off my duties to Donnel after the battle with Gagnrel in two weeks. I'll place him on the right path, and hopefully somebody like Frederick will be able to train him in the finer points of being a retainer.

As my final additions to the roster, I have added all current members of the Shepherds, updated some of the entries, and catalogued the last of my findings. I've also rated every member of the Shepherds.

~Walter Dornez, The Angel of Death, October 22, Age 2609

It seems I'm not dying just yet…

~Walter Dornez, Ylisse's Guardian Angel, November 23, Age 2609

No.000... Walter Dornez, The Guardian Angel of Ylisse

A butler with a natural talent for battle. He wields a special set of monofilament wires that emanate from his gloves. When not on the battlefield, he often speaks in a calm, and dignified, manner. He also acts as the butler to the Shepherds, often cooking, and serving food and drinks, as well as cleaning the barracks of the Shepherds. On the battlefield, however he is a merciless force to be reckoned with. His usage of the wires, along with his merciless nature, earned him the nickname "the Angel of Death", a title which he happily accepts, and often defends with much glee. Despite being well liked by his comrades, he feels guilty for his past actions.

...

As a result of his past dealings with the neo-nazi organization known as Millennium, Walter was temporarily converted into a monster known as a vampire. The power was sealed away by an unknown entity when Walter arrived in Ylisse and this is represented by a sealing sigil being placed on the back of his hand. This sigil is controlled by the amount of physical energy he currently has. This results in Walter having far less energy in battle, as the seal eats away at it. Unfortunately, the seal is also causing Walter to de-age. The butler has no idea whether the seal will stop de-aging as soon as he reaches his age after his prime (Late thirties to early forties) or will continue to de-age him until his body falls apart. Either way, Walter must choose between releasing the seal and becoming "Dark" Walter once more, or letting the seal slowly kill him. Either way, the future does not look bright for the Angel of Death.

...

Walter specifically instructed me to not look at any other entries other than his own.

How do I describe Walter? I suppose that's a difficult question, especially for me; strange, you'd think it'd be easy. He's kind—amazingly so—which is somewhat unexpected considering how dangerous a fighter he is. He's certainly smart—in my opinion, just as smart as Miriel and Laurent. Perhaps the quality that I find most noteworthy is what his presence is capable of; just being near him makes me feel safe, perhaps that's just a bit of bias shining through, though…

I can't honestly describe him without getting lost in thought. I fear that I'd be writing for days if I were left to write all the things I know about him... all the things that I… love and admire.

I suppose that's something, the things I don't know about him make me curious. His past is practically a mystery to me; other than the fact that he was turned into a vampire at some point, and the he betrayed the person he served before my father, I know very little about Walter. Still, I know that it troubles him a bit; I can see it in his eyes sometimes. I can tell when he's thinking about his past, he looks so distant whenever he does; he just tunes everything else out. I want to help him too, but there are just somethings he's really guarded about. Maybe I'm being paranoid…

I suppose that's something I need to work on with him…

Either way, that's all I have. Walter, I know you're going to read this, so please tell me when you're bothered by something; I want to help you like you've helped me.

No.001... Chrom, The Crown Prince of Ylisse

The prince of Ylisse, and descendent of the Hero-King: Marth. Noble of blood, he leads a militia known as the Shepherds. On the battlefield he wields the Legendary sword- The Falchion- with unparalleled skill. He often leads the Shepherds into battle with a demeanor fitting of a king; while off the battlefield, he cracks the odd joke now and then. Chrom holds a deep admiration for his sister, Emmeryn, due to her kind and benevolent style of rule. He cares immensely for his friends and family and will stop at nothing to ensure that they are safe. He also seems to have a soft spot for pies, as noted by both Sumia and I. His strong conviction makes him a fine leader, and the perfect man to be the exalt.

Chrom's sense of justice has gotten him in trouble on more then one occasion. The man will stop to save just about anyone in danger, baring those that have tried to kill him. It is admirable that he'd go through such lengths to ensure his people are happy, but there is the possibility that this sense of justice shall get him into trouble someday.

Further interactions with Chrom have revealed his great value of the lives under his command. This comes as no surprise, seeing as he is the self-sacrifice sort. However, he feels unworthy of others giving their lives to protect him. He feels that every single injury on the battlefield should have been dealt him, and not his comrades.

His emotions make him brash, and this could possibly get him in trouble someday.

...

During his battle at the Midmire, Chrom tapped into an unknown power. His Falchion burned orange, and his power seemed to increase exponentially. Those that witnessed this have stated that the prince entered this state as a direct result of his emotional state at that moment: fragile as glass. His anger caused him to nearly take General Mustafa's life in cold-blood, and he very nearly raised his blade against Emmeryn. However, as soon as he came to his senses, Chrom immediately lost the power boost; actually fainting shortly afterwards. It is likely that this strange power he tapped into contributed towards the short coma he entered.

It is unlikely I will ever get to witness this state firsthand, and unlikely I'll ever understand what this power was. Perhaps Lucina has an understanding of what exactly occurred? Perhaps I'll have to ask her at some point in the future...

During the battle with Gangrel, Chrom tapped into that power he used at the Midmire once more. I did not bear witness to it, seeing as I was unconscious at the time, it was seemingly enough of a power-up to have closed the gap between him and Gangrel; a feat not without merit. Perhaps research into whatever the power is warranted, as this may serve as a major game changer in the future.

No.002... Lissa, The Noblest Healer.

Chrom's tomboyish little sister, and princess of Ylisse. Despite her noble blood, she often acts childish. Off the battlefield, she often plays pranks on others(minus myself, as I seem to either extremely frighten her, or she has too much respect for me. I personally think it's the former) On the battlefield, she acts as a healer, and understands the responsibility she has to shoulder to keep everyone alive. Her cheerful demeanor makes her one of the most likable Shepherds in the group. She had a huge crush on Frederick as a kid, and she often deliberately disobeyed him to get his attention. Though it is unlikely that she still carries this childish crush, there is evidence pointing otherwise.

...

Lissa is determined to prove herself to be more than a healer. Her determination to prove herself as someone who can take care of herself has led her to train extensively with Frederick. Training under Frederick has not only strengthened her physically, but has also strengthened her resolve.

She shares a similar self-sacrificial attitude that her brother has, though not as extreme. Her perceived fragility was a source of great contention for herself, and this led her to wishing to prove her usefulness. She is more than willing to put others before herself, and will stop at nothing to save the lives other comrades.

...

Having become a 'War Cleric', Lissa now serves as both a 'healer' and a 'warrior'. While not as powerful as other units, she's now capable of competently defending herself; a sharp increase in her usefulness. This is courtesy of her training under Frederick.

No.003... Frederick, The Stalwart Knight

Chrom's lieutenant. He acts as a bodyguard for both Chrom and Lissa, despite the fact they have no need for one. His sincerity is only matched by his skills with a lance or sword. On the battlefield, he is a calm and collected warrior without peer. He executes orders nearly flawlessly and usually never question orders. Off the battlefield, he acts basically the same way. Many of the Shepherds have been known to have stated that Frederick's training sessions are among the most brutal of training sessions ever known. Those who have survived his regime have commented that they did feel empowered...

...after several days of recovery.

...

A truly fine retainer—although he refuses to be called a 'butler'—that fulfills his duties with great dedication. After I, more or less, 'took over' his role as Chrom's second-in-command, he has solidified himself as Lissa's personal retainer. He, Phila, and I serve as the personal bodyguards for Lissa, Chrom, and Emmeryn respectively.

No.004... Sully, The Women to End All Men

With a sword arm built for battle, and a mouth that would make brigands blush, Sully is one of the most capable knights in the Shepherds. With her skills with the sword and lance in mind, she is able to decimate her opponents with a style, and grace, that many women can only dream of. Though that comes with the cost that she is somewhat too self-confident at times, bordering recklessness at times. This often leads her to ignore her blind spots. Despite a confidence that many men wish they could have, she suffers from insecurity, due to her masculine personality.

Feminine is one word that is the polar opposite of what Sully is. She is normally quite keen to prove herself as unfeminine as humanly possible, but recent interactions with others have brought certain traits into light. For example, she's no problem with being complimented, so long as it's being given by a person whom she respects. A result of her focus on becoming a knight has caused her to neglect learning everyday skills.

...

She and Virion have entered a rather interesting romance of sorts. Honestly, I couldn't have predicted that, but the two have... chemistry, in their own way. Still, whether their relationship goes 'all the way' is up for debate. Either way, the attention from Virion may have improved her perception of herself; on her 'femininity' in particular.

No.005... Virion, The Archest of Archer

A nobleman whose past is well hidden. His buffoonish, and overall idiotic, actions lead many to see him as a man with no skill whatsoever. His skills, however, often come out in battle in the form of an almost flawless accuracy with a bow. These skills make him the finest archer the Shepherds can provide. Virion, unfortunately, is a hopeless romantic. He will propose to almost anything that is female. This doesn't outshine the fact that he will defend anyone he likes to his last breath.

Virion's flirtatious nature is not absolute. When Virion has chosen someone to court, he will focus all attention on said person in hopes of winning them over. This is best seen in his relationship with Sully. Keen to prove himself as more than a braggart, he has stuck by the cavalier side for every battle they've been in.

On rare occasions, one can see the true nature of Virion's personality; which is one of great remorse. Whatever burden he carries on his shoulders is a mystery at this point, but it seems to fuel his desire to protect those around him.

It seems his persistence with courting Sully has paid off, as she has FINALLY started to reciprocate his affection. Whether the relationship with the lioness of a woman will hold up is up for debate; there's no doubt in my mind that he's dedicated to her, at least. Still, only time will tell if he finally has met his match—and partner—in Sully.

No.006... Sumia, The Graceful Rider

An absent minded, klutzy Shepherd with no self-confidence or self-worth whatsoever. With this in mind, she is eager to get better. In battle, she fights alongside her trusted Pegasus, often performing graceful maneuvers with her Pegasus.

These maneuvers are often combined with her skill with a lance. Both Frederick and I have noticed that she is a hard worker. Also noted, is the fact that she has an incredible amount of potential, and the things that she excels in, she REALLY excels in. One example is her natural affinity with working with animals.

Sumia loves reading books, mostly novels. Reading these novels helps Sumia escape her perceived weakness, as she often roleplay's as the main heroines of the books she reads. She does this in hopes that it will help her gain the confidence she feels she needs in order to become successful.

Sumia is also adept at telling flower fortunes. While a useless skill on the surface, she often uses these fortunes to fuel her resolve. Any bad fortunes she receives, she is determined to overturn. And good fortunes she receives, she is determined to make come true.

...

Sumia seems to have become a source of comfort for one certain blue-haired prince. While I never personally asked Lucina for the identity of her mother, I have a hunch...

No.007... Stahl, The Oddly Normal Cavalier

An oddly normal Shepherd. Not much can be said about this member of the rag tag group of Shepherds, as he seems to be the most normal of the group. This sentiment follows him into battle, though it surprisingly doesn't hinder him. He seems to be just as an effective cavalier as Sully and Frederick but beyond that, my observations end there. Despite living in an age where war is waged on his country endlessly, he has a surprisingly trusting personality. It's unknown whether this should be classified as a strength or a weakness. There is one thing that has been noted by all the Shepherds as abnormal; his insane eating habits.

He is most certainly the jack-of-all trades when it comes to… well, everything. From his strength to his skill, he is average in all but magic.

Of note, he's certainly among the most outgoing of Shepherds, cracking through even the most guarded of individuals. Whether his genuinely kindhearted nature can get through to the likes of Lon'qu, or—heaven forbid—the human detesting Panne is certainly worth monitoring.

No.008... Miriel, The Perfectionist with no Peer

A perfectionist and meticulous women with a pompous style of speech. As a perfectionist, she will grow irritated at the smallest flaw. In battle, she is skilled with magic to the point that she is deadly accurate with her tomes. It can be noted that she has the tendency to suddenly stop mid-battle

if so much as anything, whether it be lucky, divine or scientific, piques her interest. Her everyday life is filled with research, in a manner that can be considered obsessive. According to some Shepherds, she is willing to stalk a person until she divulges the secrets to some of their abilities (Examples include: Kellam's affinity for stealth, Stahl's odd normality, and Frederick's skill with a blade)

As the resident scientist of the Shepherds, I find myself wondering what scientific concepts from my world is she familiar with; or, at the very least, on track to discovering. I'm tempted to explain a few rudimentary concepts to her, but I worry that I'll be lecturing for several days—not hours, days—knowing how meticulous a note taker she is. She'll want every single detail available. Still, wouldn't hurt to try, right? After all, I'm a vampire; I have all the time in the world.

No.009... Vaike, The Misplacer of many

A rough-hewn Shepherd best known for his loud mouth and habit of misplacing everything. While his ability is something that I would consider exceptional, his confidence boasts of being even better. His abilities with an axe is not something to underestimate, as he has managed to outmatch Chrom in some of their more intense sparring matches. His loudmouth has often pushed himself into danger as well. An odd quirk of Vaike, as observed by ALL of the Shepherds, is his tendency to refer to himself in the third person. According to Lissa, his personal nickname, Ol' Teach, is the latest in a long line of nicknames for himself.

His rough upbringing in the slums taught Vaike many of the harsh realities of life. It is possible that the ghetto environment he lived in had something to do with his need to prove himself as something more than the average warrior. Perhaps he is hiding some insecurities, many of them having to do with the troubled past.

It is feasible that Chrom, the prince of Ylisse, viewing him, a village rat, as an equal is the reason he pushes himself to such extremities.

There lays underneath that boisterous man one that is seemingly serious, perhaps even—dare I say—cunning in his own way? Though dim witted on the outside, I've noticed an underlying sense of intelligence to some of his actions; his words as well. It's as if the Ol' Teach person is a façade.

No.010... Kellam, The Pillar with no Presence

A soft spoken, blank-faced Shepherd who has a tendency to seemingly disappear, even when you're alone the room with him. Not much can be said about Kellam, as he is hardly ever spotted by anyone. As such, details about him are incredibly sparse. The same can be said about his skills in battle, as he tends to fade into the crowd at times. It can be noted that even I have a hard time tracking Kellam, even though I have an innate ability for tracking. Despite his protest to being unseen my everyone, he is proud of his stealthy nature.

There's a possibility that his lack of presence lies as a result of some childhood trauma. I certainly am curious as to whether or not this ability can be controlled—turned on and off like a lightbulb. I did promise to help Kellam with this issue, and I don't plan on going back on that promise.

Perhaps roping in some extra help may prove to be enlightening.

No.011... Lon'qu, The Gynophobic

A swordsman that hails from Reyna Ferox. Although Regina Ferox is not his home, as he was actually born in the country of Valm, which is across the sea to the west. It is unknown why he fled his country of Valm, but it is known that he went to Regna Ferox and trained as a swordsman. There, he caught the attention of the West-Khan Basalio, who made him his champion.

In combat, he is a masterful swordsman. He specializes in the usage of the Feroxi style of swordplay, which emphasizes aggression in combat. This makes him a warrior that is comparable to Chrom. Off the battlefield, he is quite the introvert, very rarely socializing. Oddly, he seems to have a fear of women. It's unknown how this fear developed, or if it is even a fear. All that is known is that the mere presence of a woman turns him beet red.

Phobia is not something to be viewed as a joke, rather a result of some traumatic event. A part of me pities Lon'qu, because it seems like the quiet man sometimes wants to be able to interact with others—women among them—but is too socially inept to join in. I wonder if there's anyone in the world that he's relatively comfortable with—maybe even a girl. It's likely that—if such a person were to exist—it's someone from Regna Ferox; likely someone also associated with Khan Basilio.

No.012... Donnel, the Tinhead Warrior

Hailing from a secluded corner of Ylisse's, young Donnel has very little experience beyond farming. However, after showcasing bravery beyond that of men many years his elder, he was given the chance to join the Shepherds. Despite his lack of training, he has truly stepped and shows a great deal of promise.

In combat situations, Donnel maintains a level head and deals with threats carefully, but effectively. Early on, due to being bogged down by his status as a villager, he required the aid of several Shepherds in order to be effective. After using a Secondary Seal, he has become incredibly powerful. Out of combat, he is a friendly young man that is down to earth and easy to get along with. Many of the Shepherds actually call him Donny instead of Donnel, but he doesn't seem to mind at all.

...

Son of a veteran from the 'crusades' on Plegia under the last Exalt, Donnel grew up knowing that killing was wrong. However, as result of serving under the Shepherds, he has grown numb to death, and now feels nothing when he kills. In honesty, I feel partially responsible for setting him on this path; a path that could turn him into a monster. I've taken him under my wing in order to show him the importance of putting others first; hopefully he'll be able to empathize once again.

No.13… Ricken, the Young Mage

A relatively inexperienced Shepherd who's appearance is that of a child. His mannerisms are not that much better either, as he seems to behave like one as well. Ricken is one of the youngest Shepherds , alongside Lissa and Maribelle. He comes from a noble family that has fallen harsh times, this being his reason for joining the Shepherds. He hopes that he may bring back some semblance of honor to his family name. Whether or not this will work is entirely dependent on his actions.

In combat he is as effective as Miriel is when it comes to long range combat. As with Miriel, he is a rather poor close-quarters fighter. Of course, this is to be expected, as he is indeed a mage. Out of combat, his youthful appearance has endeared him to others. Of course, he dislikes being treated as anything less than an equal.

I wonder why he's so determined to prove himself sometimes. Every now and then, I see a shades of the child he is; a fair bit of immaturity. He's impatient and expects to grow up a bit quicker than is necessary; he has chip in his shoulder that all eager teenagers have. Perhaps pairing him with someone who is older, but is still able to maintain a youthful vigor will teach Ricken that he need not try to act like an adult yet.

No.14… Maribelle, the Sharp-Tongued Noble

Lissa's best friend, Maribelle, is a proud noble who possesses quite the sharp tongue. She hails from one of Ylisse's older families. Her attitude is not particularly friendly, and she acts cold to those that do not meet her expectations. She is notably cold to commoners, although she is better than most other nobles. Of course, she also warms up to others quickly. Once you get to know her, she can be quite kind.

In combat, she serves as a healer like Lissa. Unlike Lissa, she travels on horseback and is technically classified as a Troubadour. Of course, this does not stop her from being an effective healer. Off the battlefield, she partakes in the normal everyday activities with others. She can be quite overbearing towards those that she views as obnoxious, but she's generally a well-meaning young woman.

Sometimes I question whether her poshness is a result of her actually being a snobby noble, or if it's because she hasn't acclimated to those around her; people of less fortunate circumstances. I know for a fact that she wants to be better, that she actually wants to be able to befriend others, but she really ought learn that there's a difference between being overly critical and friendly banter. Maybe if she were to speak to someone with a more… harsh background?

No.15… Panne, The Last(?) Taguel

The one of the last of a nigh-extinct race of animal/human hybrid known as 'taguel'. She can transform into a huge rabbit like creature—an aspect of her race, though I presume the transformation is different for each individual taguel. She showcases a largely level-headed attitude toward most people, though she holds a grudge against humanity for driving her kind close to extinction. She seems to hold some amount of interest in 'rebuilding' her race, although this would require her to find a partner. So long as she maintains her hatred of humans, it is unlikely she will find one, however.

Possibly as a result of being an anthropomorphic rabbit, she has a love for carrots. Additionally, she seems to have very little knowledge on human customs, though this is to be expected.

Panne is a… how do I put this delicately…?

Panne is quite consumed by her aversion to humans as a result of her race's near extinction at their hands. Unfortunately, she seems content to lay the blame on the whole race rather than those that actually committed the crime; worse still is her inability to understand that the sins of the fathers are not applicable to the sons. It's a rather sad cycle she finds herself in.

Perhaps giving her time to interact with some of the more outgoing Shepherds may dull her hatred for humanity.

No.15...Gaius, The Sweet-toothed Thief

A thief that turned on Plegia the night of the assassination attempt on Emmeryn. His loyalty was secured through his love of sweets, although I personally consider this to be rather flimsy.

In terms of personality, he has the proclivity of nicknaming those around him. He is a practiced liar—not at all surprising—and utilizes this skill to mislead people. However, he is surprisingly handy, and possesses a keen intellect.

No. 17… Cordelia, The Prodigy Among Prodigies

One of the most gifted Pegasus Knights to have graduated at the academy, Cordelia achieved high marks on all of her exams, passing her fitness and written tests with record numbers. Captain Phila has mentioned to me—more than once—that Cordelia would make an excellent successor to her. Indeed, it's of note that many—inside and outside the Pegasus Knight Corps—that she is an exceptional knight that is not only rich in character, but hardly surpassed in beauty.

Of note, she and Sumia have been close friends since childhood.

Despite her exceptional ability, Cordelia grew to detest being called a 'prodigy', along with it's synonyms. This is a result of being teased by her squad mates when she was recruited. However, upon the decimation of her team, she has come to realize that she misinterpreted the action, as it was simply them 'hazing' the newest recruit. Cordelia possesses a form of survivor's guilt as a result of being 'chosen' by her knight-sisters to live on without them.

A final observation: Cordelia seems to be in love with Chrom, a feeling that is possibly unrequited. While, I'm more or less certain of Lucina's parentage, there lies a possibility that Cordelia is Chrom's future wife. Of course, this is a hypothesis—one that holds even less water than my other theory—but it's noteworthy enough to write down.

No. 18… Gregor , The Sellsword with a 'Swellsword'

An incredibly friendly and down to earth mercenary that joined the Shepherds shortly before Exalt Emmeryn was rescued from Plegia. He's the second oldest Shepherd—behind me by around twenty or so years—and shares my distaste for being reminded of such. He is a hardy person that scarcely winces when confronted by just about anything—sans his age, which he is, again, sensitive about. Overall, a welcome addition to the Shepherds, and someone I can actually relate to somewhat.

Gregor has the odd proclivity to speak in the third person. This eccentricity is only bolstered by his possession of—much to my utter confusion—a Russian accent. Just as Virion's accent—which is some strange mixture of French and British—Gregor's brings up the question as to how one can possess a Russian accent without Russia. Still, this is far away from his strangest quirk.

Having been around the world many times, Gregor has accumulated a repertoire of skills that make a versatile unit.

No.19… Nowi, The Emerald Scaled Manakete

In my line of work, it wasn't uncommon for me to encounter beings aged in the hundreds; I always assumed that I'd never meet a being that had lived longer than Alucard—568 years old. However, I now know that such beings do exist, and Nowi is one of them. At approximately 1,000 years of age, Nowi is a Manakete whose origins have been possibly forgotten. Of course, her appearance hardly reflects her age, she looks little older than twelve—fourteen at most.

While her personality reflects her childlike appearance, this is a calculated front. In reality, she is a fairly intelligent girl—fitting of a being as old as her—that has a keen eye for reading other people. It's this keen eye that allows her to understand, empathize, and ultimately uplift others; mostly through acting as a heartfelt child. This mask has served to up the morale of the Shepherds, Nowi often acting as the one to remind the others of the bright side.

While she far exceeds any other being I've ever met in age, I realize that she may be the only companion I have in the far future. As a vampire, I'll remain the same—stagnant—while the others age and eventually…

Still, it's somewhat comforting to know that I might possibly have a friend to keep me company, even when everyone else is gone.

No.020… Libra, The Faithful Follower of the Divine Dragon

A Ylissean Priest of the Church of the Divine Dragon. He possesses excessively feminine features—so much so that he has been mistaken for a woman even by those with a keen eye.

I will admit, my experience with the church—Catholic one in particular—has given me a... how best to describe this...

…a aversion to those of the faith. Though Libra is not catholic, the Church of the Divine Dragon certainly shares more than a few characteristics with the same group that spawned the likes of Alexander Anderson. Still, bias aside, I feel that—like with so many others who join the faith—there is some part of Libra that lays beneath the surface.

Libra is a kind and caring individual, that is undebatable. He has a calming demeanor to him, one that can seemingly put anyone at ease; one that can be equated to a mother—which only serves to further cause confusion about his gender. However, there are traces of a much darker persona lying beneath the surface. Piety is so often birthed from imperfection—I feel that I'm testament to that sometimes—which begs the question: what troubles Libra so much that he seeks salvation on a daily basis? I for one have even noted a small amount of hesitation being touched in any way.

One can only hypothesize…

Perhaps getting to know Libra a bit better will serve the both of us some amount of good. It couldn't hurt to try, right? It's not like he's Alexander Anderson.

No.021… Tharja, The Sorceress Master of Hexes

An individual whom I find the most difficult to read at times, Tharja acts exactly how she looks: dark and mopey. Recruited during the Exalt Rescue Mission, she showed little to no care for whether Plegia won or not; a sign that she holds no loyalty to her country of birth. She is a dangerous master of the dark arts, most notably hexes. While I'd prefer to keep our interaction at a minimum, I must admit that Tharja possesses a most intriguing knowledge of curses, seals, and magic; to the point that she was able to correctly identify—analyze even—the seal on my vampirism at a glance.

Unfortunately, that's where my compliments for this mage ends, as she possesses a stalker-like obsession with me; stemming from my vampirism. I've seen very little to indicate she has anything but dark intentions, and I fear what would happen if she were to find out about Lucina and I's relationship.

Perhaps if she were to interact with the others, some emotion other than angst would become prevalent. As of this moment however, I find myself repulsed by her damned promiscuity towards me. Even more disturbing, if I were the man I was when I was actually in my early twenties, I'd probably have slept with her without hesitation.

I suppose a single intimate relationship with someone will do that to you…

…even if it does end in disaster.

No.022… Lucina, The Woman Who Challenges Fate

I suppose I really must put aside my bias in writing her entry. As this roster is for my eyes, and my eyes only, I'll aptly describe Lucina as best as I can; again, without bias.

The daughter of Chrom and a woman with whom I've not yet been informed, Lucina hails from a future which the Fell Dragon—Grima—reigns supreme. Having fought against the monster in her timeline, she has come back in time in hopes of preventing the tragedy she experienced from occurring once again. When she first appeared, she went by the name 'Marth'—after The Hero King of old. Even now, since no one else is privy to her origin, she's still called Marth by the others. According to her, she was also accompanied by several of her comrades; none of which have appeared yet.

How do I describe Lucina? I suppose determined is one word; strong would be another. She is… kind, in probably the most literal sense of the word. Lucina is incredibly selfless, willing to make great sacrifices for the sake of others; in particular, those she cares for. Perhaps her love and kindness stems from her life living in her time—being considered the last bastion of hope for the people of her time—having to serve as a symbol of peace. She certainly carries the weight of the world on her shoulders, a weight that I happily help her support. She, more than anyone I've met, didn't deserve the cards she was dealt, and I can't help but feel agonized knowing what she went through.

I'm beginning to find it hard to stay objective in my description of Luce…

Anyway, I suppose I do have to note that she has some… strange quirks.

For one, she possesses quite a dry sense of humor—a quirk that is slowly being rectified thanks to her continued exposure to my learned and witty self. Although, more noteworthy, is her strange sense of fashion. When I took her shopping, she picked out the strangest of dresses to wear; I ultimately had to step in, lest she embarrass herself. Even now, the clothing she buys herself is quite eccentric, with only one purchase being acceptable to me; the bear hat she bought herself. It's strangely cute—most definitely endearing—to see her wearing such a thing…

…if only she didn't buy their whole stock.

It seems that I have to limit the amount of our money she has access to. I'd rather not have the funds I work hard for go towards another 'happy helping' of bear hats…

Still, I can't fault her, that was quite possibly the first time in her life that she was able to freely have whatever she wanted. Maybe that's why I wasn't angry with her.

What am I doing? This is supposed to be objective.

I suppose I don't have anything else to say about her, not at this moment.

The Pair up System

As for anymore observations that I've made, they mostly revolve around the system of battle that I shall refer to as "The Pair Up System". As the system is relatively new, I have only tested this strategy in a single battle, that battle being yesterday's conflict. Even so, I see that this system boasts some very fine results.

When working with a partner, people tended to hold more of an advantage in battle. For some reason or another, the presence of another person seems to give people access to increased endurance, power, and speed. People that are closer to each other have bolstered effects. Chrom and Sumia being one such example. I noticed that they worked in brilliant unison with each other, almost to the point that they attacked as one unit. Another example of a strong bond comes in the form of Virion and Sully. Try as she might to act as disdainful towards the nobleman; together they are a formidable team.

There are also certain pair-ups that don't work at all. I have no idea if this is a general lack of care for certain members of the militia, or if they are pairings that have decided to be mutual friends only and nothing more. one such example is Vaike and Virion. They do not seem to bolster each other's abilities as significantly as the others. The mysteries to why they cannot support each other as well as other teams that I can think of is beyond me.

For me, the pair-up system seems to yield very interesting results. For the entirety of today, I partnered with everyone within the Shepherds for a bit of a sparring match and found myself with some peculiar results. I am able to be paired with anyone, and the results all conclude that I benefit from the morale boost. I do not understand why this is, but I must keep these results in mind during the next battle.

That makes me wonder of one thing. What were to happen if I were to pair-up a married couple together in battle? The result is nothing more than a dream at the moment, as I am sure that it is unlikely that any of my allies will marry in the future. As for me, I doubt that an old man such as myself has even a chance at finding love among these young people.

That concludes my observations on this subject, thus far. If I find out anything else, I'll be sure to catalog it here.

~Walter Dornez, July 20, Age 2609

As the bonds between fellow units grow, their strength increases exponentially. Since last time, I have continued to conduct research into this phenomenon. To my great delight, those that are consistently paired with one another tend to have greater coordination than those that are not.

As I said in the last entry, there are those that cannot seem to support each other, and I think I know why. My hypothesis is that the differing styles between the two people are what prevent them from gaining any substantial boosts when paired up.

As tactician, it is my duty to know everyone's ins and outs, so being able to coordinate with everyone is natural. Thus, I have explained exactly why I can pair-up with every unit.

Again, if anything happens, I'll be sure to catalogue my findings here.

Odd Weaponry

During my years as the Hellsing family butler, I learned the art of smiting. I used this skill to my fullest advantage, creating devastating weaponry for the organization. Due to the renaissance, semi- medieval, nature of the land of Ylisse, I do not know where to find the materials to create something that is common in my world, guns.

As such, I am forced to experiment with swords, axes, and lances instead. This where I hit an odd snag in my creating of weapons. It seemed to me that the more deadly I made a weapon, the easier it broke. Metals such as bronze created oddly durable weapons, but a metal such as silver produces a more powerful blade at the cost of durability.

Bronze, unlike silver, is not an element, but an alloy made up of copper and tin. Something like bronze would be better for making armor, as it has higher resistance and a higher melting point.

Silver is an element. Silver should be the more durable of the two, as it does not corrode as easily, nor does it react to other elements, as it is a more un-reactive element.

That makes me wonder, "Can I somehow create a weapon that is both durable, and powerful?".

The answer is, it's certainly possible.

Chrom's sword, Falchion, is a weapon that is both powerful, and nigh unbreakable. The weapon has been enhanced by the divine power of Ylisse's deity, the Divine Dragon, yet Alexander Anderson's blessed bayonets, and the blessed silver bullets of Alucard's Casull, are all only as durable as normal bayonets and bullets. What does Falchion have that other weapons don't?

The answer eludes me, but I swear that I will find the answer soon enough.

~Walter Dornez, July 21, Age 2609

I have had little luck when it comes to forging custom weapons, but I have been able to modify existing weapons. An altered weapon tends to be more effective than normal weapons. I managed to produce a Silver Sword that was sharper. A good discovery, but not good enough. I must find a way to create a custom weapon.

For now, I've focused on creating a special altered weapon for one of the Shepherds. As to whom I will give this special weapon, I'll have to decide later.

For now, I will continue to research into the possibilities of forging a weapons.

~Walter Dornez, August 26, Age 2609

I've had a breakthrough regarding blessed weapons. To prepare for the battle against Gangrel, I had silver weapons forged in the fires of the sacred torch—said to be the fire with which the First Exalt was bathed so he could commune with Naga. While, it's unlikely that I'll ever get a chance to mass produce such weapons again, it makes me wonder if there are any other methods with which to bless weapons.

The Master Seal

This world never ceases to amaze me. Recently I have discovered the wonders of the Master Seal. The Master Seal is an amazing object that is used to unlock a person's latent potential. How this works is a mystery, but it is indeed a fascinating tool. Apparently, anyone can use a Master Seal after reaching a certain level of strength.

I tried to see what a Master Seal would do to myself. The effect was catastrophic. I ended up detonating part of the Shepherds Garrison as a result of the experiment. My hypothesis is that the potential I possess is either too great to be unlocked by a Master Seal, or the seal on the back of my hand is interfering with it. Either way, I'll likely not tamper with a Master Seal again.

~Walter Dornez, August 26, Age 2609

The seal was not causing my inability to utilize the Master Seal, I simply can't use it.

On the bright side, I think everyone's getting close to being able to utilize them.

~Walter Dornez, November 23, Age 2609

Skills

It's come to my attention that there are abilities that one can learn aptly called 'skills'. Apparently, these abilities can range from any number of things—from increasing magic power, to increasing speed. Learning these abilities apparently requires a copious amount of study, and the skills an individual can use are all dependent on their genetics. As a hereditary trait, children will often inherit their parent's skills. This explains how Lucina can utilize that strange power she identified a 'Aether', as she likely inherited it from Chrom.

It's quite possible that these skills could serve to close the gap in power between the other and myself. Of course, this is all hypothesis.
