Summary: Toothiana never had the opportunity to tell someone of how much of a hero her father was, until her twins, Damien and Regina, wanted to hear a story about Grandpa. Cavity, based off of the universe of fearlingcontrolled on tumblr

Toothiana never thought she'd ever live to hear the words "tell us a story about Grandpa!" She couldn't help but still as her twin children peered up at her beseechingly. Never before have they asked about their maternal grandfather (nor about their paternal grandfather, but that was merely because Pitch didn't remember much of his life before his reign as Nightmare King. The Fearlings made sure of that). Often enough, they asked about stories of the Nightmare King and his pirates, about the daring Guardians who opposed him, or even a few stories about how the two sides reconciled.

This threw her for a loop.

"What brought this about?" she asked, carding her fingers through Damien's dark hair, making a mental note to schedule a haircut for him. His bangs were getting a little long. The two 8 year olds exchanged looks before replying, Regina taking the lead.

"We were making Father's day cards for Daddy in school a few days ago. Some of the kids were making some for their grandfathers, too," she started, averting her golden eyes. Damien took the lead from here.

"Some were sharing stories about their grandpas. We...we were just curious..." He trailed off, and Tooth couldn't help but smile fondly at them. Placing a kiss on each of their brows, she settled them both onto Regina's bed before cuddling the both of them.

"Your grandfather was a brave soul. He was born into slavery, but that never stopped him from having a good heart. His master, the maharaja, was not cruel to him, and was in fact best friends with your grandfather. They had been companions since birth. Your grandfather had nothing, and wanted for nothing, and admired the maharaja who knew what he wanted and always got it. Likewise, the maharaja admired your grandfather for being content with having nothing and wanting nothing more. The maharaja loved to hunt, and your grandfather was an accomplished tracker, and the two would spend many hours hunting the various animals of the jungle. However, your grandfather did not have the stomach to see the beautiful animals fall to the maharaja's weapons, and he looked away every time." Tooth paused to see both of her children enraptured with her story, and she couldn't help the smile on her face as she continued.

"One day, the maharaja wished to hunt the flying elephant of Punjam Hy Loo-"

"NO!" "Not Ellie!" Both children exclaimed in horror. Tooth let out a chuckle at the nickname her children had given the guardian of their home.

"-and your grandfather could not persuade him from his quest. The maharaja had a boat made of discarded childrens' teeth-"

"Wait, he stole kids' teeth?!"

"How could he?!"

"The maharaja asked his subjects and when a child's tooth was lost, it was sent to the palace. All of the teeth were willingly given," she made sure to explain. Tooth was just surprised they had focused on how he had gotten the teeth and not what he did with them. "He had a boat made of the childrens' teeth and had your grandfather make a golden bow and an arrow tipped with a ruby. It would be his only hunting equipment.

"The boat of teeth flew the maharaja and your grandfather up over the army of elephants that stopped hunters time and time again. Once in the jungle, on the outskirts of the city, your grandfather found the tracks of the flying elephant, leading to a huge jujube tree where the flying elephant slept in his nest in the low-lying limbs. The maharaja took aim with the bow, but the Sisters of Flight-"

"Grandma?" Damien asked sleepily, nuzzling up against her arm. Tooth slipped her arm out and pulled her son in closer.

"Yes, your grandmother appeared, swords in hand, with her sisters at her side, making both men freeze where they stood in their flying boat. The maharaja moved first, and took aim at your grandmother, and when he took his shot, your grandfather jumped in front of the arrow to protect her."

"Wait, grandpa died?" Regina asked, a frown marring her lips. She let out a yawn before clutching a black stuffed horse close to her chest. Tooth shook her head.

"He was dying, but your grandmother saved him. She sacrificed her wings to stop the bleeding and healed your grandfather. Her sisters moved in to slay the maharaja but your grandfather wished to show him mercy. 'He has learned his lesson. He will no longer harm you. Please, let him go—send him on his way,' he said. And the sisters agreed with him, showing the maharaja mercy. But he gained this mercy at a price. It was decreed that the maharaja would leave behind everything that he brought with him: the golden bow, the ruby tipped arrow, the flying craft of teeth, and Haroom, your grandfather, his only friend. They also demanded that he leave behind his vanity and his cruelty, so the sisters could better understand them. The maharaja was heartbroken, but agreed, and the flying elephant came down, touched his trunk to the maharaja's forehead, and took away his vanity and cruelty."

"Unfortunately," Pitch said from the doorway, both kids looking up and grinning at him before snuggling back into Tooth. He shoved off from where he was leaning on the door jam before approaching his family and sitting on the edge of the bed. "once the maharaja's cruelty and vanity were taken away, there wasn't much left of the man, and he became as simple as a monkey. He even ended up sprouting fur and a tail and scampered away, muttering gibberish as he fled the area. After that, your grandfather, Haroom, and grandmother, Rashmi, married, and soon after had a baby girl in their arms, with beautiful dark hair and gorgeous magenta eyes, just like her mother." Pitch's voice softened as he smiled at his own children. "And that is enough for tonight. You both had such a long day, and you have school in the morning." He patted Regina's blanket covered knee before kissing her brow. He tucked her in as Toothiana gathered Damien up in her arms and carried him over to his own bed and settled him in. She kissed him goodnight before she and Pitch swapped sides, kissing their other child goodnight before heading to the door.

"Goodnight my darlings!" Tooth called out to them.

"Happy Father's Day!" the two chorused out and Pitch smiled warmly in reply.

"Thank you my Loves," he whispered. "Sweet dreams-"

"And pleasant nightmares!" they finished before the twins settled in to sleep. Tooth switched their light off before closing the door until it was just cracked open. The darkness had never bothered the children, but one day it might. Pitch and Tooth headed back to their room in Punjam Hy Loo and Pitch collapsed onto the bed, his face slamming into the pillow. Tooth couldn't help but chuckle before heading into the bathroom to brush her teeth and get ready for bed.

"You can't be tired already!" she teased him lightly from behind the partially closed door.

"We've had a long day!" he called out, his words muffled by the comforter.

"What?" she called out, having not heard him.

"We've had a long day," Pitch repeated himself, lifting his head up so he wouldn't be quieted by the bed.

"What?" Tooth asked again, closer this time as if she had come to the bathroom door to hear him better.

"I said-" he stated before lifting his head again to look at her before cutting himself off, his brain going into hyperdrive as he spotted the sheer nightie on his wife. Seeing the wicked grin she had on her face, Pitch groaned a little before rolling over onto his back and raising himself up onto his elbows to get a better look. Tooth blew him a kiss before sauntering over to him.

"I'm old, be gentle," he teased and she couldn't help but grin as she straddled him, her arms caging in his head. Pitch's hands came up to caress her sides, her wings fluttering gently.

"Just don't fall asleep on me, old man," she replied before kissing him, the Nightmare King's arms wrapping around his queen's waist.
