Galadriel

The night was quiet. The minstrels had no heart to sing and the people retired to their homes for restless sleep. There were no stars in the sky, and the lanterns were dim. Darkness surrounded them like a shroud and the very air felt heavy.

Galadriel knew not how long she stood in front of her silver mirror. The water had grown still and the visions had disappeared. She heard the faint rustling of robes over stone as someone descended in the enclave.

"How long have you been here?" Celeborn asked in dismay. She raised her eyes to him. Her beloved was dressed in full armour, seeking the company of the soldiers rather than their bed for the past few weeks. His long cloak dragged over the ground. "Are you not tired?"

"Sleep has been elusive of late," Galadriel murmured, turning her attention back to the mirror. There were no more visions that waited for her. It was both a relief and a curse. "I no longer know my purpose, my love. The world is out of my grasp and I know not where to cast my eye." Celeborn's gaze fell on the mirror.

"And what does your mirror tell you?"

"Nothing and everything," Galadriel said wearily. "And now it tells me nothing. What am I to know of the fate of Men? Or that of our granddaughter's betrothed? I can tell you nothing, for my visions are gone."

Celeborn stood next to her and caressed her gently, placing his hand on the back of her neck and guiding her to rest her head against his shoulder. His armour felt smooth and cool against her cheek.

"You told me once long ago," Celeborn murmured. "You said there will come a time when there will be darkness in the world and you will turn to your visions seeking guidance. And it will be your downfall. When that time comes, I was to tell you." He pulled back so he could look into her eyes, his gaze soft and tender. "My dear lady of sun and moon, the time has come. It is best now to let the world turn on its own, rather than force it to turn. It is time to rest."

His gentleness eased her spirit more than food and sleep. Celeborn murmured soothing words in her ear as he carried her up.

"Rest, my lady. Have no fear, for tonight the sentries stand tall. Tomorrow, we will need your aid."

Author's Note:

I have been gone for far too long. I was hit with a massive writer's block accompanied with a very hectic real life schedule. I cannot promise frequent updates but I can certainly say that I am immensely happy to rejoin this large family. :)
