Jay's point of view

"You! Get over here! "A coach on the sideline shouted. Jay walked over to the coach, remembering him from the photo in the article from last night, he was Coach Jenkins. Captain Smith is standing beside him a near sneer on his face as Jay trotted over to the two. "What do you call that?" Jay wasn't going to lie. He may have had to much fun on the field, but it just felt so good to knock some princes down. Jay worried for a second. Maybe his bit of fun would put a hole in whatever plan he would come up with. "I call that raw talent." The coach shouts, laughing, "Come find me later. I'll show you something you haven't seen before. It's called a rule book." A large deep belly laughs erupting from the man. "Welcome to the team, son." Oh, if only Jay had a camera for Captain Smith's face.

"Sorry, Coach Jenkins, but you aren't head coach anymore. I am" Captain Smith assets, the vein in his forehead throbbing. "And I chose who is on my team." Smith turned to Jay eye cold as ice "I don't take villain."

Jay could feel his hackles rising and had to work to keep from snarling. "You could use a tough guy like him. The team is a bunch of princes, and you know it. You need him," Coach Jenkin's said with a serious look on his face.

"I don't need a villain, assistant coach," Captain Smith said one step from being in Coach Jenkin's face.

Jay was impressed with Jenkin's ability to remain calm, "Not for long. Captain." Captain Smith frowned even harder and walked away.

"Ignore him, son," Coach Jenkin's said, patting Jay on the shoulder "that choice might not be his much longer."

Jay wanted to ask questions but noticed the rest of the team was starting to surround them. Coach Jenkin's looked over at Carlos and said, "You ever thought about band. "Jay couldn't help but laugh at Carlos's unamused face.

"I'll work with him, Coach," Ben said, as Coach just brushed him off.

"Jay, come here for a second," Coach motions to the bleacher "The rest of you run your drills and formations. Ben start working with band kid here."

Jay could practically see his scheme starting to come true. "Have you ever thought of joining a sports team?" The coach asks as they sit down, watching over the tourney field.

"There isn't anything like this on the island." Jay watches as prince Charming's son nurses his side, keeping an eye on Carlos and Ben.

"With your strength, there have to be sports." Coach Jenkin offers a smile.

Jay turns to the older man, "its called survival of the fittest for a reason." Jay was confused when the man's face fell.

"Right, the isle is…" the coach let that sentence die between them. "Well, as I said, I could really use you on this team."

"I'm a bit confused," Jay says, turning his head and trying to appear as small as he could with his uncertainty. "I thought Captain Smith made those decisions, and he made his opinion clear."

"Between you and me, Jay Smith may not be here much longer." The man looked a bit ashamed of this. "I stepped down, and I really thought Smith could do this. Turns out running a ship doesn't translate to a tourney team." The Coach shook his head. "I built this team, put my soul into it, I won't watch it go to shambles because of one man's pride. The decision is going to be made after this season if Smith doesn't bring home a championship."

"No offense coach, but I may not be here that long," Jay says, bowing his head arms on his knees as he curls into himself. "Our future here is permanent. For all, we know we could be shipped back to the isle at any time."

"How did you hear about this kid?"

Jay shrugged, "kids talks coach all of them are ready for us to go back to the isle." Jay closes his eyes, taking a deep breath. "So thanks for the offer coach, but I'll pass. Once I start something, I finish it." Jay stood up, whistling to get Carlos's attention.

The boy perked up, walking over abandoning Ben as Jay made it down the bleacher.

"Now hold on son," Jay bit his tongue to stop himself from yelling, he really hated when people called him son. "You let me talk to some people, I still have a few connections around here just don't make any rash decision. Come to practices."

Jay let a small smile slip, not turning around, "I'll think about it."

Carlos made it to the bottom of the bleacher. "What's up?"

"Let head out yah" Jay says, jumping down the last three steps.

Carlos looked at the teen oddly, "You sure this is kind of your scene."

Jay shrugged "meh, let's go eat"

"Sounds good to me" Carlos says, already trying to get out of the tourney gear.

Jay didn't have to wait very long for Captain Smith to find him, but he was pretty surprised at how violent the encounter started in a random hallway. He hadn't expected the good Captain to be so intense. Good thing Jay knew precisely how to negotiate with an angry man.

"You didn't have to shove me so hard" Jay says straighten his t-shirt "I could bruise"

The Captain looked unimpressed, "You're villains pain is all you know." Jay couldn't help raise an eyebrow now who had hurt this Captain so much, but his statement wasn't wrong. All villains know pain, to take it, or to inflict it.

"I am rotten to the core." Jay mutters, walking around the Captain, continuing down the hallway. "Come on Cap. You didn't come all the way here to tell me that." Jay was thrilled in the eye twitch when he called him Cap.

"I've been told I need to put you on the team." The older man says through gritted teeth following the teen.

"By who Coach Jenkins. Man is ambitious and got a great eye for talent. Or was if Fairy godmother so motherly she is." Jay's smile may have been all teeth, but it was finally nice to show some real part of himself.

Captain Smith didn't comment his mouth a firm line. "They don't make heroic princes like they used to. No villain to push them to greatness." Another eye twitch from the teacher. "To many "after you, old chum." "Oh, Pardon me, did I bump into you." Kind of hard to win a game when everyone is so polite."

"You think you're the villain that can push them." Captain Smith sneered.

"My entire existence is made to push heroes." Jay said confidently, "Where I come from it prepare to die sucker. Eventually, your princes will want to show off and try to stop me even if it's in a game. Heros hate to lose."

"So do villains" Smith said, shoulder's squared back.

"As my father used to say, there are three types of people in the world." Jays, as a matter of factly "the heros" Jay gestures to the school "the villains" Jay places a hand over his heart "and the nobodies." Jay gestures to Captain, "You were good in your prime, but what's a sea captain to a prince who slew a dragon. Your story is meh compared to some of the legacies here." A clench of the jaw, but tiredness in the Captain's eyes made Jay continue. "This was your shot wasn't it. To make a name a legacy that means something nowadays."

"I don't need a villain giving me a therapy session." The Captain shouted, and for a moment, Jay could genuinely see how beaten down the man was, it was all too simple.

Jay had made it to the trophy case in their little walk. "So many achievements, immortalized in the school's legacy. I mean, this is what matters now right, not exploring, not charting unknowns, its this." Jay spats gesturing to the trophy case, "No one cares that you made it to a new world if you can't win a tourney championship."

"What do you want?" Captain Smith grumbles.

"Simple I don't want to go back to the isle," Jays says "So the best way to stay is to be needed." Jay herds the Captain to the front of the trophy case "and you need me."

"Bullshit" Smith growls as he whips his head to the teen.

Jay had to suppress the flinch. The Captain's eyes were wild. Jay was playing a dangerous game now. Jay needed to get to the point soon. "Hey, I'm just trying to help. Those remedial goodness classes really are helping." Maybe a bit more teasing. "I'm not your enemy none of us are. We just don't want to go back, that's all."

"You join the team, and I'll work to keep you here." Captain Smith said, defeated.

Jay shook his head "No you work to keep us all here." Smith looked at the teen, funny, "You have your team, and I have mine."

"I thought all villains no is I. There is no I in team." Smith says, looking at the boy strangely. Hmm, did Jay show to much of his hand?

"There is a me," Jay says, "Here is the deal you work to keep me and my people here, and you tell fairy godmother that Carlos needs to be in advance classes and the girls in magic class."

"How do you…" Captain Smith's eyes narrowed. "I was right about you, you're dangerous."

"Yes and no." Jay says shrugging, "I'm dangerous when I feel like something that's mine is being poorly handled." Jay looked back at the case. "Make the deal, and I'll give you your championship."

"How can I trust you?" Captain Smith asked, Jay wasn't sure what the man was thinking, and that made him jittery, should have ended it sooner.

"You should never trust a villain, but you can trust that a villain hates to lose, especially to entitled goody-goodies. My pride is on the line."

"How do you know you can trust me?"

"Because you still believe in honoring your word. Give me your word and the championship, your legacy here solid."

Captain Smith stared at the teen, "I give you my word." Smith extends his hand, and Jay rolls his eyes, but Jay takes the man's hand and shakes on a closed deal.
