Listen With Your Heart Chapter 10
On Monday when school came back around Phoebe went back to school with a plan. What she had in mind would probably go against everything her father wanted, but right now she didn't really quite give a damn.
Basically Phoebe was going to march into the school, get Peter Parker alone, and then speak to him about all he said and everything she'd learned after his abrupt departure from her home.
Unfortunately, that was much easier said than actually done especially since Phoebe had to pay attention in her classes instead of focusing it on him. Then each time a class ended when Phoebe went to intercept his path there was always a huge wave of fellow students blocking her. During lunch Phoebe thought she found an opening when he was sitting at a table alone by himself. She was about halfway there when Gwen waylaid her. Phoebe couldn't rightly tell her friend that she wanted to speak to Peter Parker without giving away her intentions along with the purpose behind them. She and Gwen have been friends for a very long time so she had to take extreme care not to have a conversation of there's point in any direction that would place her in a precarious position lying straight to her face. Gwen could smell when she was being dishonest from a mile off. Phoebe couldn't risk that. So she simply played it cool acting as if everything is normal when it in truth actually isn't.
So Phoebe reluctantly became resigned deciding to wait for the end of the day when everyone was leaving the school grounds for home. She'd catch him then.
A whistle from the coach blew.
"Number one!"
"Run it, buddy."
"Let's go, Reggie!"
School was almost over and Phoebe was sitting on the bleachers in the gym. Phoebe currently had a free period as did Peter. She wasn't the only one in there. The cheerleaders and basketball team were holding practice and a bunch of other students were in there either hanging out or doing school projects. To anyone looking she was simply catching up on some homework where in fact she was faking it. In reality she was keeping an eye on Peter.
Peter was wandering around aimlessly though Phoebe couldn't exactly figure out why.
Flash was being his usual obnoxious self in front of everyone. Whenever he was doing sports the jerk couldn't resist showing off. Guess he needed to excel physically to make up for what he seriously lacked mentally.
As a player on the opposing practice team went to make a basket Flash intercepted slapping the ball away shouldering the other boy hard. The kid slammed on his side onto the court.
"Rejected," shouted Flash, aggressively.
The ball bounced rolling on the polished floor until it knocked into a bucket of blue paint. It tipped over spilling onto a banner that a female student called Amy was working on for an upcoming event. It spread over the wording that she'd already finished messing it up. Now she'd have to start all over again.
Disgruntled, Amy accused "You did that on purpose, Flash!"
"No, but I should've. You better watch your back," threatened Flash.
Up where she was sitting Phoebe subtly rolled her eyes.
One of Flash's team members retrieved the ball passing it to them. They whole lot of them then returned to basketball practice.
The same as he did with the other boy a couple of days ago Peter came to Amy's defense.
"Hey," said Peter, smiling, bending to right the fallen bucket of paint for her. "All right?"
Amy nodded smiling a little in appreciation.
This peace didn't last very long.
Flash moved to block another attempt at a dunk and this time he deliberately smacked it her way intending to hit the nonathletic girl with it.
Phoebe opened her mouth to voice a warning, but turns out there was no need.
Surprisingly Peter managed to catch the base of the ball with his hand and the most astonishing factor of it all is that his back was turned. He hadn't even seen it coming yet he still caught it. Anyone could tell by looking at his face that Peter was just as surprised as the rest of us were.
Things got really strange after that.
No matter what Flash did to get the ball back from Peter it kept ending up in failure. Even when Peter put one hand over his face offering the ball to Flash he still couldn't take it. Everyone could see that Flash was getting frustrated. His teammates were urging him on to take the ball from Peter to no avail.
This didn't make any sense. Flash is a lot more bigger and athletic than Peter. He shouldn't be able to do this.
Finally it got so bad that Flash even challenged Peter to one on one. Peter ran for the basket. When Flash went to block and steal the ball from him Peter shouldered into Flash sending him tumbling to the floor. When he was about twenty feet away Peter sprang into the air as if he was on a trampoline. He made a slam dunk into the basket. The impact had so much force behind it that the backboard broke shattering into tons of pieces and the entire basket was dislodged falling along with Peter as he dropped.
No one said a word just standing there with their mouths gaping open like idiots. Their mouths were so big Phoebe could swear she saw flies moving in and out of a few of them.
The same question was at present going through everyone's minds.
What the hell just happened?
