Listen With Your Heart Chapter 15
The next few days were very strenuous for the Parker twins. The family may have been reunited, but with its patriarch gone things would never be the same.
For Phoebe, who had known Uncle Ben so little, it was a stab to the heart that she would never get to know what a good man he was ever.
Peter was taking especially hard. He blamed himself for what happened and refused to get over it.
Whatever bitter resentment he had inside followed him to school when it was time to go back.
Aunt May was handling preparations for Uncle Ben's funeral while Peter and Phoebe went to school. Curt Connors and Aunt May did agree on one thing. This would not interfere in the children's education.
But something else might.
In a high school news travels fast especially where it pertains to bad ones.
The eyes of many were trained on Peter the moment he stepped inside the school. Not on Phoebe. No one yet was aware that Peter and Phoebe are brother and sister so they didn't even pay much attention to her. Phoebe remained a couple of steps behind.
Phoebe didn't really say much to him, just simply watched.
Peter was moving so slow and sluggish that her heart went out to him to see how this was all affecting him.
From down the hall Phoebe noticed someone who would only make the situation worse.
"Hey, Parker."
Flash was at the end of the hall and he was slipping to the filled hall towards Peter.
Head partially hidden by the locker door, shaking his head, Peter said "Not today, Flash."
"Hey, come on, man. I just want to talk," said Flash, placing a hand on Peter's shoulder to turn him around.
Peter did not take that well.
Quicker than anyone thought possible Peter grabbed Flash by the collar of his sweatshirt pinning him against the lockers. Gasps rang out as the gathered student body waited with baited breath to see what Peter was going to do.
"It feels better, right? Look, your uncle died. I'm sorry. I get it. I'm sorry. Okay," said Flash, uncharacteristically contrite.
It's more than Peter could bear.
Peter released Flash grabbing his stuff before tearing out of there. He whipped at the tears coursing down his face.
Gwen Stacey intercepted him.
"Peter," she said, softly.
Peter stopped gazing at her with blank empty eyes. Gwen pulled him into a huge trying to provide some consolation. Without returning it Peter pulled out of it continuing down the hall to class.
Gwen simply watched him go, not knowing what to do. She wasn't the only one watching him leave.
Phoebe looked on the verge of a break down the tears barely contained in her eyes.
Approaching her friend, concerned, Gwen said "Phoebe?"
Phoebe turned to face her, exhaling shakily.
"Phoebe, what's the matter," said Gwen.
"Gwen, there's something I have to tell you," said Phoebe.
