Listen With Your Heart Chapter 19
The next morning when Phoebe awoke to find her father absent from the house she was surprised yet not worried. This wouldn't be the first time he pulled an all-nighter at Oscorp before. She simply figured he was busy again.
So Phoebe simply went to school where she met up with Gwen.
During classes Phoebe grew a bit concerned. She hasn't glimpsed Peter once in the hallways. So she grew worried that he might've skipped school today. Those thoughts dispersed when she finally found him in the middle of the school day. Well Gwen did, she simply pointed it out.
Removing his hood, Peter said "Hey."
"Hi," said Gwen, smiling.
"How's it going," said Peter, avoiding straight on eye contact with Phoebe.
Peter grimaced at the expression on Phoebe's face. Her eyes are locked onto the bruises on his face. They were fading, but still very visible.
"Where you headed," inquired Gwen, easily keeping pace with Peter.
"Uh, Monday. B-track," said Peter.
Dryly, Phoebe corrected "It's Thursday, Peter."
She couldn't believe her brother could be so scatterbrained.
Genuinely surprised by that, Peter said "It's Thursday?"
Motioning towards his face, Gwen said "What happened to your eye?"
"What," said Peter.
"It looks bruised," said Gwen.
Having temporarily forgotten about it, Peter said "Oh, yeah, yeah, no, I don't…Maybe I got a rash or-."
"It's pretty bad. Have you gone to the nurse," said Gwen.
Peter cleared his throat not answering her.
Rolling her eyes, arms crossed in irritation, Phoebe said "Don't expect too much out of him, Gwen. I asked him about the same thing last night and he refused to tell me."
Peter shrugged, deflating. He so didn't want to get into this again here.
Changing the subject, totally out of the blue, Gwen said "Do you like branzino?"
Peter stood there appearing very stupid since he isn't aware what Gwen is talking about.
"It's a fish," said Phoebe.
"I know. I know," said Peter, playing it up as if he knew all along.
He can't fool Phoebe. She's not buying it for a second.
Hastily writing down her address for Peter on a piece of paper, Gwen said "Well, if you want, you can come to this address at 8 o'clock tonight. My mom's making branzino. You can come too, Phoebe."
"Sure I'll definitely be there. Your mom's a great cook," said Phoebe.
"Thanks," said Gwen, handing the information to Peter. "Oh, it's apartment 2016. I didn't write that part down. I don't know why-."
Phoebe looked on amusement at how flustered Gwen is now. Looks like someone is sweet on Peter.
"I'll remember it," promised Peter.
The school bell rang signaling it's time to go to the next class.
The two girls left fully aware they'd see him there tonight.
Phoebe elbowed Gwen in the ribs lightly teasing her friend. Gwen couldn't get rid of the blush on her face, denying the whole thing.
After school Phoebe called her father at the office to let him know that she was going over to Gwen's for dinner. Curt Connors didn't put up any fuss, granting her permission to go without a hitch. Once he hang up he picked up a framed picture of Phoebe on his desk staring sadly down at it.
At the start of all this Curt Connors had one main goal in mind. To make an enormous scientific breakthrough that would restore not just his arm, but to all who have lost something like he did. In recent years that had drastically changed.
Now he has someone far more important to protect. It's not just about him anymore.
"This is for you, Sweetheart," he whispered, placing the photograph of Phoebe back onto his desk.
Curt Connors will inject himself with the serum to prevent Dr. Ratha from using it on veterans. Then when it is successful he'll have no reason to dismiss him nor hurt Phoebe.
Phoebe will be safe. So now the ends will justify the means no matter what happens to him.
