Dr. Tillman

She'd gone… home.
She'd taken his car, a rental. It was an anonymous, generic, dark sedan that would be picked up wherever it was left – eventually.
The next morning, when she looked out her window, it was gone.
So was he.
So was Benton.
She looked. She searched even harder than she had in the days following Gabrielle's death…
'John' – if that was his name – had kept his promise. Andrew Benton had seemingly ceased to exist.
Was Benton dead? Had John made use of the lye she had carefully stockpiled at the rental house?
Maybe.
After seeing the darkness and pain that deep regret had left eating away at his soul – she certainly wouldn't be surprised.
But somehow… she didn't think Benton was dead. There had been too much kindness in John's eyes.
Then again – maybe she was wrong. John had killed – he had told her as much. He was no stranger to death. But she was surprised to find that she was not terribly bothered by that particular mystery. Whether Benton was dead or just somehow permanently erased no longer mattered to her.
And every time she thought about it a tiny bit of a smile would fleetingly cross her face. Not a smile of happiness, or joy, but an acknowledgment of truth: She would have lost herself that day – if she had gone through with her plan. She would have destroyed her own life by intentionally taking the life of another. She knew that now that she could look at all of it with a clear head, not one filled with pain and loss and revenge.
John had taken that darkness from her soul and carried it for her. To where, she did not know.
She didn't know and she didn't intend to look. Not for him.
Not because she didn't care.
She cared.
But she understood.
He came and he took the darkness, and he carried it for those who could not.
She marveled at it, that ability - the ability to take burdens from those who could not stand under the weight…
He carried their burdens.
Wherever he was – she wished him light and life.
And she prayed that he had someone to talk to.
End.
