Chapter 47
Overthinking Can Be A Good Thing Sometimes
"Oh hey…Lori." Jake greeted awkwardly and handed the baby to Rose.
"Hey Jake." I say. "Also, just a heads up don't beat around the bush." I say in response. "You wanted nothing to do with the baby, or mine, for the whole pregnancy. Now you're holding her and have this huge ass smile on your face."
"Yeah, well…yeah." Jake avoided my look. "It's not what you think. I mean, I did imprint, but it's not like that."
"I know. I wasn't thinking it was going to be anything bad. I just know how Bella will be. She might end up killing you." I warn him I a very blunt tone.
"Just don't tell her. What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Plus, I figured I would tell her when she's not a newborn anymore." Jake said.
"Okay, well when you do tell her, tell her outside so Esme's rugs won't get stained with your blood." I mean honestly, think about Esme.
"It won't happen. Bella wouldn't harm me…that badly." I could tell he thought about it after he said his choice of words.
"You would think that. You haven't met mama bear Bella. If she has any feeling to protect her like I do with Noah, you'll need to run. Hers will be amplified. You know. Newborn and all." I say.
He rolls his eyes at me. "If you say so." I felt like I was being nice about it, but I guess not.
Bella was close to waking up now. I wasn't allowed in the room. I wanted to be there when she woke up. I wanted her to see her baby when she woke up. That won't happen. It was too dangerous.
Here I am on my way to the store with Esme. We don't have a ton of food at the house anymore. All thanks to precious baby. Yes, precious. He's so dear to me that it was hard to focus on anything else in the room. Unless Jasper was there.
Lately he has been a little distant. Due to there being a newborn soon. Today was the day Bella was going to wake. The time was still unsure, but to keep me safe, Jasper made me go with Esme to the store. Noah was back at the house with Rose, so the babies could play together.
Jake ordered Seth to come with us just in case there was a problem. I do appreciate it, but it's unnecessary. He was off being a wolf in the woods, watching over us as we made our way to the store.
According to Seth, the other wolf pack is backing off since Jake imprinted on Renesmee. They also agreed to not do anything to Noah if he does nothing that would involve them to do something.
Once we arrived at the store, I got out and walked in with Esme. I helped her with the shopping list and suddenly my bladder started to scream at me. Really? One of those oh you should have gone at home and well I didn't have time moments?
"I need to use the bathroom. I'll be back in a couple of minutes." I say to Esme.
She thought for a bit and nodded. "Okay. I'll probably be in the dairy section."
I nod and make my way to the bathroom. I hate using public bathrooms, but I really need to go.
After peeing like a race horse, I cleaned up and made my way out of the restroom. Turning the corner, I accidently bumped into a lady.
"Oh!" I said as I bumped into her. "I'm sorry!" I apologize to her and look up a bit to see her face.
She was stunningly beautiful. Her hair was light brown with waves framing her face. Her eyes were dark blue with soft pointed eyebrows. She had plump lips that has a peach tinted lip gloss on them.
Smiling at me, she shook her head just a bit. Her teeth were blindingly white. It made me think of that episode of Friends were Ross whitened his teeth. That made me want to go home and binge watch the show.
Her smile was warm and very calming. Instantly I liked her.
"It's okay, Sweetie. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going." Her voice was like honey and velvet had a child. Whoever she is, she could make anyone like her.
"Okay, well um…bye." I say like a fucking moron.
Walking quickly away from her to Esme, I found myself thinking about the woman I bumped into. She had zero flaws. Zero. That's when I started to think. Could she have been a vampire? She did have blue eyes and vampires definitely don't have blue eyes. They could have been colored contacts. Can vampires even wear contacts? Don't you need to have moist eyes to wear them? Also, vampires have like super vision.
It wouldn't hurt to ask though.
"Hey, Esme." I say as I catch up to her. I lean in so she could hear me, even though she has super hearing abilities. Can vampires wear contacts?" I whisper to her.
"Yes. That's what we are going to have you and Bella wear if something were to happen where you needed to look you and not blood red eyes." She responded in a hushed tone and looked at me concerned. "Why do you ask?"
I nod as she tells me this. "Maybe it's stupid, but I think I bumped into a vampire under cover. I think she was wearing contacts. Can you smell her on me?"
Esme sniffed a bit and leaned in like she wasn't getting a scent. "I only smell you and our family." She says. "I don't smell anyone I don't know on you."
"I'm probably overthinking and being stupidly paranoid." I sigh out. "Ignore me."
"No, if you're feeling this way we can just check out now and go home. I'll come back later for the rest of the groceries."
I agreed, feeling bad like ruined a mom and daughter trip. I don't get a lot of alone time with Esme. I need to change that.
It didn't take long for us to pay and get out. I was told by Esme to call Jasper and tell him what I think. Truth be told, I felt like it could wait and that I was just being dumb. However, to calm Esme, I did what she wanted.
Jasper didn't take long to answer. It was one ring and I heard him.
"Sorry, I know you're busy. I wouldn't bother you if it wasn't important. Actually, I feel like an idiot because it might be nothing." I say nervously.
I'm overthinking. I'm stupid. I need to just shut up.
"Just tell me, Lori." He sounded a bit annoyed.
Fuck.
"Okay, so at the store I bumped into a lady. She was stunning, and I felt it in my gut that she was a vampire. She had contacts on I think. Anyway, I went to Esme and she didn't smell anything on me besides the normal. I think I'm just overreacting." I turn my head to look out the window.
I wish I didn't say anything. I wish I could go back in time and keep my mouth shut.
"Okay, we are on the way. We will meet up with you in a minute or two." He says.
"Okay, we are in the car on-…"
There was a moment, just a small moment in time where everything felt like it paused. I saw a figure coming at us. Light brown hair and not so blue eyes. Hand out, stretching towards me.
The moment ended and the next thing I knew, the car was rolling. My phone fell from my hand as I bounced from side to side. Luckily, my seat belt held me. I didn't have a chance to scream before the car came to a sudden stop. It must have hit a tree or something hard to stop a rolling car.
Glass must have cut me, because I saw red in my vision. My glasses were flown from my face during the rolling, so it was difficult to see.
I heard Esme tell and I looked over to see a blurry Esme being pulled from the car. She kicked and punched all she could. However, from what I could tell, she was out numbered.
Not a moment later I was being dragged out by a pair of hands. The grip was so strong, I felt something pop painfully.
"Your father sends his regards." The familiar honey voice came from behind me, right before something punctured my chest. A syringe was injecting this gray foggy fluid into my heart.
Before I knew it, burning pain coursed through me. Even though I never had this extreme pain before, I knew what it was.
Venom.
