Chapter 13 – Misery Underground

Walking away from Tris was nearly impossible. Part of the old Hel would have swung first, asked questions later. Tris might play sweet and innocent but she is far from it. Her own best friend would rather go out of her way to avoid her. Guess that's what happens when you shoot your best friend's boyfriend and friend in the head. There was a million different ways to handle that situation but she choose that. She never judged Christina for hating Tris in the most civil way possible. She had plenty of opportunity to tell her best friend the truth without the truth serum.

Was it possible? She thought to herself. They were all ready and willing to throw Eric to the dogs, give him a death sentence. So for Tris' crimes why not her? Hel thought back to the day of the Candor truth serum. Potent in its extraction to reveal the truths of those we trusted more or at least thought we did. Tris was clearly fighting it, her tears were from her Divergence fighting the serum not from remorse. She appeared more upset for having to reveal the truth behind Will's murder.

Eric's own Divergence did little to help him fight against the double dose of the Candor serum. Borderline lethal at its potency even for a man his size. Like most of us he was under a simulation. Under it longer than anyone else, since before he defected. Made to believe he was doing something right with his power. He had killed people yes but he wasn't the only one. Eric's kill list was made pubic knowledge in that moment. Not all of Tris' was.

The incoming messages from Rena and Four said it all.

(Rena: ...Tris has been enlightened to say the least.

Hel: I know there is a good chance I could regret asking but...

Rena: She knows we know & yes she is fine.

Hel: ...but?

Rena: I swear she's bruise free.

Hel: Thanks. If I would have stayed we both know she wouldn't be standing.

Rena: That's why I left, left her to simmer on her own bullshit for once.

Hel: Luv you, your awesome.

Rena: Luv you too. Now there is a sweaty naked man in my apartment that needs my tending too. TTYL)

She shock her head and smiled. She was happy for her. Mason was a good guy and he treated Rena like the Goddess she was. Her finger hovered over the next notification. Tapping it before she could talk herself out of it. He wanted to meet up at his apartment. The results were in on their blood tests.

(Four: The results came back and I don't want to look at them without you.

Hel: Yeah okay. Anyway to meet up without Tris?

Four: She's not here, I'm not sure where she is.

Hel: She was in the Pit last time I seen her.

Four: I take it that didn't end well?

Hel: Well one of us got a tongue thrashing tonight and not the fun kind.

Four: There is a fun kind?

Hel: I'm not at liberty to discuss my sex life.

Four: Thank God. Come on, I'll meet you at your place, safe bet she'll steer clear right now.

Hel: Yeah, I'm almost there.

Four: OMW)

She understood, why he wanted to wait for her. The anticipation was getting to be on a level of unbearable. Once home, she picked up the living room and kitchen. Shaking her head and rolled her eyes when she moved a pair of Eric's boots near the door. Moved the varies pieces of hers and Eric's wildly discarded clothing to the hamper in the bathroom. Finally washing the coffee stained mugs left over from this morning. Silently investigating the remnants of the Amity bread from a few days ago. Questionably sticking it in the fridge, not entirely sure of its best by date. If it even had such a thing. She was pretty sure all serums had an expiration date, she was just unfamiliar on that one. Eric arrived first, a case of beer and a food container in hand. Putting the case in the fridge, he turned his attention to her. Wrapping her in his arms, pressed a kiss to her forehead.

"I have a surprise for you."

"Keep it in your pants, Four will be here soon."

"Its cake, but now that you mention it, the look on his face would be fucking priceless."

"I'm glad your only wanting to sleep with me just to piss him off."

"You know damn well that's the only reason."

"Did the big bad Dauntless leader catch feelings?"

"Damn these stupid feelings." His eyes lustful, nipping at her neck.

He was still teasing her when Four stepped to the open door way. Knocking on its frame and stepped in. Watching the very flustered Hel slide off the counter as Eric stepped aside.

"Well this is awkward."

"Clothes are still on, chill out."

"Door was still open."

"That was my fault. She tried to seduce me for cake."

"Hey! You said it was for me!" Snatching the bag off the counter as she pretended to pout.

"See she didn't deny seducing me."

"I don't think she has to try, considering she could have anybody."

Hel nodded in agreement, taking bite of the chocolaty goodness. Eric looked a little defeated, but he knew that it was the truth. She could have any guy she wanted but she chose him. Wanted to be with him. Keeping quiet was more tactful and calculated, as opposed to raging about how he too had options. That would be one dispute that wouldn't end well.

"So uh what's it say?"

"Chill Eric, if you two weren't busy distracting me I could have pulled it up already." Four shushing them, the trio waited in silence as the tablet window loaded. Hel leaned her head on Four's shoulder. The email flickered into existence on the screen.

'Subject : DNA Test Results of Tobias Eaton and Helena Gavin

Statement

A comparison of the DNA profiles of Tobias Eaton and Helena Gavin support the hypothesis that Tobias Eaton is the biological brother of Helena Gavin. Based on testing results obtained from analysis of the DNA loci listed in the technical data, the probability of biological match is 87.9%.

{A long list of numbers, graphs, and comparisons filled the remaining space of the email}

"If we had a sample of our mystery girl maybe we'd have a better understanding of who she is."

"Its not an if, how would we even get our hands on her long enough to get anything."

"God, boys are slow. We can't get DNA from someone we can't find."

As if in unison the men shot her a glare. She retaliated by sticking her tongue out at them

"Stop teasing your brother, it's not his fault he grew up a Stiff."

"Looks like I get to have another talk with the guy fucking my sister."

"What do you mean another one?"

"Nothing, it was a long time ago."

"The point was made."

"What fucking point are you two talking about?"

"Simple shit. If he ever hurts you, I hurt him."

"I appreciate that, but we both know, I'd kick his ass first."

"Oh I know, I am well aware of the girl I trained."

"Can you do me a huge favor?"

"For you of course, anything?"

"Have your girlfriend steer far away from me. I don't care if you tell her that were related, I just really don't need her running off and doing something stupid."

"Will do, she does have a history of things like that."

"Always trying to be a martyr. That girl is more trouble than she's worth."

"That may be so, Eric, but I love her."

"Fair enough, I'm starting to know the feeling."

"Wait, what did you say?"

"Would you look at the time, I really should get going." Pulling her into a big hug, kissing the top of her head. Four gave Eric a look.

"We will talk tomorrow."

"Yes ma'am." He replied as he caught glimpse of the look of uncertain doom written on Eric's face. He laughed as Hel shut the door behind him. Though it wasn't the only thing on his mind. He needed a mental break, having only confirmed one topic of conversation. Hel was in fact the mystery baby his mother left in Jeanine's care.

What had happened to her prior to her ending up with the Gavin's. To what happened to not only her under Jeanine's reign but to Eric.

Slowly turning back to Eric, Hel let the heavy smirk play on her lips. His response to Four's comment only confirmed what she was teasing him for earlier. His stance was different now, towering over her.

"Well one of my biggest dreams came true."

"What's that? Him going home?"

"That I'm sleeping with Four's sister." His lips found her neck once more. Earning a muffled moan. Each time his lips met hers, she had trouble keeping her mind and her words on track. Eric knew exactly what he was doing too.

"How long have you been holding on to that one?"

"Give me a little credit."

"So about...ten minutes?"

"More like twenty but I waited til he left."

"Oh that must have taken some real will power."

"Wanna know what takes will power?"

"Oh and what's that?"

"Not stripping you naked and fucking you on this counter."

"What's stopping you?"

He yanked on her jacket, revealing her now bare shoulders. Tossing it to one of the bar stools, before it fell to the floor. She pulled off her shirt, it too ended up on the floor. Tugging on his belt and his pants til his growing erection was free. The rest of there clothing was swiftly discarded. He scooped her up, placing her up on counter. A hiss escaped her as the cold concrete made contact with her skin. Holding on to him, he instead carried her over to the couch. Bending her over the back of it. Taking pleasure as he ran his hands down her back to her ass.

Smacking and grabbing it, all while he teased her entrance. Thrusting into her, keeping a steady strong pace. He pulled her back, one hand on her hip the other massaging her left breast. Her back against his chest, she moaned loudly. Reaching back she gripped hold of hair. Growling into her ear and his pace picked up. Each time the knot uncoiled, he'd hold her tighter to him. Twisting her nipple between his fingers, pushing her further over the edge. Digging her nails into the couch as she rode out another orgasm. Pulling her from the couch, he was still inside her. Sitting down, he let her ride him, only this time she faced him. Bouncing and rolling her hips, as he held on to them. His grip tight almost bruising like she might disappear. She wrapped her arms around his neck, she kissed him. Sucking his lip between her teeth. His rhythm became erratic as he finished. Lolling his head to her chest, the sound of her racing heart pounded against his ear.

"That was amazing." Their heavy breaths filled the space between them. They stayed like this for a while, sharing small kisses.

"Your amazing." She shifted off his lap, propping her against his chest.

"As enticing as sitting naked on this lumpy couch is, I'm going to take a shower." Patting him on his thigh, she stood up. Stretching her arms as she took the rest of her hair down. He bit his lip as he took in the sight of her. Still slick with sweat, her hair a wild mess. As he heard the water running, he joined her.

Once they were done and dressed for bed. Eric, bare chested in sweat pants. Hel, a cropped t-shirt and shorts. Turning over she laid her head against his chest. Stroking the hair from her face, she cleared her throat. Snuggling into him.

"What's going on between you and the little Stiff?"

"You have got to stop calling her that. Ugh she's going to be my sister-in-law." The thought grossed her out for some reason, the shiver of disgust ran through her.

"That's new. That's never bothered you before, not like this."

"She's just gotten under my skin lately. Everything she's ever done and her new wanting to be all up in my personal business."

"Like when she tried to be a martyr and sacrifice herself to Jeanine to save you and your friends."

"Exactly. Its one of the reasons why I didn't tell her about those pictures of us."

"What do you think she'd do about those? Hide them under her bed."

"Eww. She'd probably follow us around in case we have sex in the Pit again."

"To take pictures?"

"Eww...You don't think? I hope not."

"No, but I like teasing you."

"Stop, the thought is turning my stomach."

"I'll stop, I'll just tease you in other ways."

Shaking her head to hide her yawn. He still caught a laugh escape her. Smiling, he kissed the top of her head. Her laughter died down, another yawn stifling any stray giggles. It was perfect not even the nauseating talk of Tris could have ruined it.

Nothing felt right, like something was eating away at her. Something she couldn't explain, not even to those closest to her. Opting for a break and a little fun, she accepted her turn to lead a game of capture the flag. Her team against Lauren's. The train cut through the terrain, blurring the moonlight landscape of the city. Barrel fires marked the pier, casting an eerie glow on its ruins. Handing out the guns, fully equipped with the same darts as before. She smirked at Lauren when one of the initiates got cocky. Whining about paint balls.

"I thought we were playing with paint balls."

"This isn't just a game, its part of your initiation and your training."

"I don't want to play if it means getting shot."

"You realize you signed up for this, just like the rest of us." Hel countered.

"They only simulate the feeling of being shot, stop being a baby." The two captains shared a look and a nod. Hel doesn't think, doesn't hesitate. Shoots a round off into the boy's shoulder.

The boy, Amity transfer, Screamed in agony for a good ten minutes, a good five after the dart had actually wore off. Shaking her head at the boy's dramatics. Once he calmed down, he yelled at her.

"You shot me, you fucking shot me."

"And? Clearly your still alive."

"Not even bleeding, suck it up. LET'S PLAY!" Lauren nodded to Hel. With that the teams broke off, the boy with the bruised ego was one on Hel's team. Wanting to at least give him a chance of redemption, she let him hide the flag. In the back of her mind, she didn't see him completing initiation. It was possible, stranger happenings had happened. Once the shooting and the yelling started Hel made her way to a huge dead tree. It was a perfect spot to stay out of the line of fire while still being able to babysit.

Beneath it stood, Lauren. Rifle slung across her chest by the strap. It the dim light Hel caught glimpse of the metal flask in Lauren's hand. A huge smirk spread across her lips. The pair leaned against the tree taking swig for shot. Discussing their amusement as well as their thoughts on the initiates ranking. When the sound of shots and occasional screams of pain turned into shouts of excitement, it was their cue to head back. Hel cracked her neck watching Lauren return the flask to its hiding place in her flack jacket.

"That was fast."

"Yeah, either they both suck or one is just really good."

"We both know they all suck." Hel laughed.

"Very true. Meet for drinks tomorrow?"

"Of course, Lauren."

Lauren's team won this time. This was like fate confirming that nothing was handed to her just because she took the job or the mantle of Eric's girlfriend. She played it off well though, feigning pure disappointment. Rolling her eyes at the passive amounts of better luck next time talk. The few who didn't opt to zip line back to the compound rode the train back. It was a somber ride back, even watching the sunrise for the first time in what felt like years. Leaning against the door frame. The sun crept over the pitch black horizon, dipping everything in gold. It almost put things into retrospective, almost clearing her head enough to give her answers.

She was not alone.
