AN: Had to pick up some new glasses today. Work's got me driving home at night which is apparently bad for my eyesight. Might need special glasses.

Anyway, enjoy this short Chapter. I wanted to put in more, but I figured I could save it for next Chapter.

Chapter 198

Nowhere to Run

[Noman]

It was near midnight when I finished brewing my Potions using Harbord's alchemy gear. Still no word as Carys, Kalmarin, and Anibal hunted Gunnah underground. Their map blips remained active, so they were alive at least.

Potions, as I had learned, were cumbersome to carry around as they did not stack. My backpack was already stuffed with items. Even after managing it between my ender chest, I still barely had enough room to carry a handful of splash potions. More than once, I wished I had the Pocket Boxes the others had spoken of. I would have to wait for a reunion before I'd have my own.

Dyson and Stayer were roused to their feet before long by the Beta males and their Potions of Regeneration. Once they woke up, Albert spoke to them quietly and I watched as their expressions turned somber. He was breaking the news about Buckner, Devers, and Harbord. Our group of fourteen was down to eleven.

My eyes strayed to Spaatz, the last surviving member of Team Gamma besides its leader, Anibal. He was sitting cross-legged, a scowl on his face, as he repeatedly stabbed a stick into the sand. When he saw me looking his way, his eyes thinned into twin slits. I averted my gaze suddenly, realizing what was going on.

Reuben might not have blamed me for their deaths, but Spaatz certainly did. Dyson and Stayer too if their expressions were anything to go by. Really, Anibal could be counted among them if she were here.

In the absence of Carys, a clear division had formed in the remains of our group. Floyd, myself, and Soul stuck to one side while Dyson, Spaatz, and Stayer were on the other. The two Beta males - Albert and Reuben - moved between them.

It was a division caused by the three latest deaths. The others were probably thinking how unfair it was that only the Paragons suffered casualties when the Beginners disobeyed orders, ran into danger, and came out unscathed. And while I'd hardly call the damage we sustained and armor I lost 'unscathed', I could see their reasoning. I didn't need convincing that I was the reason they died.

What mattered was what I intended to do to prevent further loss in the future.

Dyson was from Team Alpha, Spaatz from Team Gamma, and Stayer from Team Epsilon. Beta still had two, but ignoring team leaders and Carys, we had only one from each team. None from Team Delta, though.

Albert came back over to our side before long. He looked at my progress with the potions and nodded his approval. He looked weary as he sat down beside me, a map in hand.

"You sent an update on what happened?" I had to ask.

"No." Albert's answer was immediate. "I thought about it, but... I'd rather wait until all casualties are accounted for, you know?" His response was chilling. "Could still be a long night..."

"...You think someone won't come back?" Floyd asked, scooting closer.

Albert shook his head. "Those rockets were... they were something new." He decided. "Before, only a pair of Splash Potions of Harming II could do that kind of damage. We didn't think crossbows were that strong. We don't know what else this Gunnah has up his sleeve."

"Any idea who he is?" Soul asked. "Is he a Lieutenant or what? What's the deal?"

"We don't know." Albert admitted. "We're assuming he's an assassin sent by the Endward Cult."

"Why would they want to kill me now?" I asked, finding the idea someone would send an assassin after me disturbing. "Jade and Ember both had a chance and let me live. Why do they want me dead now? What's changed?"

"Normally I'd suggest we ask him ourselves through some enhanced interrogation techniques." Albert suggested darkly. "But something tells me there won't be a bit left of Gunnah to question once Carys is done with him." He added more darkly. "When her hate is at its freshest, all she can think of is killing that which has caused it. You'd know all about that, wouldn't you?" He spoke the last to Floyd who nodded solemnly. He was thinking of back when he and Cobb killed her pig.

"Wonder if Jade or that Leadstripe guy have something to do with this." Soul suddenly thought up, prompting us to face him.

"How do you figure that?"

"Well, I always have it out for that snake and wouldn't put it past her to send assassins after you." Soul spoke matter-of-factly. "As for Leadstripe, he has a track record of wanting the Billionth dead. He tried to kill Cobb in Zeppil, remember?"

How could I forget? That was the night I jumped in to save Cobb. Together, we were able to repel him.

"The higher-ups don't want you or Cobb dead because they think you know where Herobrine is." Soul continued. "But that's a stupid reason to risk the whole organization. Some people might not want to chance it. Some people might take it into their own hands to kill you."

"Someone like Leadstripe?"

"Someone like Leadstripe. Or Gunnah, if he turns out to be the other Western Lieutenant. We can't exactly rule it out."

He might have been on to something there. It was silly thinking everyone in the Endward cult was on the same page when I couldn't even agree with my companions about killing or sparing cultists. Maybe there were more extreme factions in the EC? More moderate ones? People who were bloodthirsty, people who were scared.

It took all kinds, the more people you had.

[Carys]

I examined the floor of the cavern closely while Kal and Anibal kept watch behind me. I didn't want to risk Gunnah getting a cheap shot on me.

Digging down the plugged hole led us to a cavern with a sandstone ceiling. There were torches placed, as well as Mob drops forming a trail. But now the trail had faded, and even the torches were scarcer. Gunnah likely had a Night Vision potion with him.

Fortunately, the cavern had no diverging paths. It was one long route that led further down.

"Hoh..." My eyebrows lifted as I spotted a chunk of stone dug out from the cavern wall, like a step. Someone had come through. I waved Kal and Anibal forward as we kept on the trail.

"Carys, you mind if I gut this prick personally?" Anibal asked cruelly. "He killed two of my best guys-"

"Whoever gets to him gets to him." I said decidedly. "I'll be firing on all cylinders when I next see him. No holding back for your sake."

"Making me work for it? Fine. Guess I just gotta turn up the heat." She delicately selected a Fire Aspect enchanted sword from her belt. "I call dibs on his crossbows."

Kal was the lone voice of reason. "Work together, guys. We shouldn't get hung up on who gets him in the end. What matters is making him dead and gone."

"That's easy for you to say. Dyson pulled through." Anibal gnashed her teeth. "Those fucking Beginners didn't lose shit. They led us into a trap. Especially that invalid. He's 'No Man' indeed."

"We'll avenge them." I assured, placing a torch down. "It's why we're down here."

"But what about next time, when he gets more of us killed?" Anibal countered. "I'll follow your orders, Carys, but I won't be placing Spaatz at risk because of No Man. He's a goddamn liability."

"I've said all I needed to say to him on the subject." I said with finality. "No sense bringing it up again. He knows the human lives he's cost. We kill Gunnah and move forward."

"I can't help but think Cobb would have been a better choice of Billionth." Anibal complained. "Dwight said he can fight like hell."

"Cobb would have been a blight on my nerves." I spoke with an eye twitch. "I couldn't be happier knowing every day we travel puts me further and further away from him. Despite that, he still finds a way to irritate me through the map messages."

"So you'd rather have No Man than Cobb?"

"I'd rather have neither of them, but then the cult would avoid us." I said. "Gunnah would have never made contact with us without that invalid around. I could tell from our short skirmish that he's a seasoned assassin sent after Noman. We just got in his way."

"Losing three of our own before reaching Exter went beyond my expectations." I continued. "I felt we'd be ready for anything only to be surprised by crossbow rockets. That being said," I closed my eyes, "I intend to leverage this new technology, spreading it to every Paragon back in Nitebane. That kind of firepower will put bows to shame, and tear the Endward Cult a new one."

"I already called dibs on his crossbows." Anibal spoke fast. "It'll be like having my own Yanhua Gong."

Kal turned his head forward, the grip on his sword tightening. "Eyes up. We got something."

I opened my eyes and found myself staring at a wall of hastily placed cobblestone. The cavern had been plugged up, hinting that Gunnah was getting desperate for time and aware he was being followed. These walls were a last ditch effort.

"Got him now." Anibal grinned, tearing out an Efficiency V pickaxe before proceeding to tunnel through the wall. She had to leap back, however, after the first ten blocks. "Whoa, hot lava!"

Lava indeed starting gushing from one of the mined spaces, flowing out over the wall to create a new kind of obstacle. We threw down Potions of Fire Resistance immediately.

"He's mixed lava source blocks into the wall." Kal pointed out. "It's double jeopardy. For a simple road block, it's pretty elaborate."

"If he sacrificed time on this, it only means he's getting desperate." I deduced. "Keep mining. And keep an eye on any other surprises he may have mixed in."

Now that Anibal was protected with Fire Resistance, she dug into the cobblestone with gusto, revealing a few more lava source blocks that caused molten death to spill forth.

Mining away more and more, she soon unearthed a dark chunk of obsidian. She dug around it only to find more obsidian in a crude, cubic shape. A difficult to mine block. He must not have thought we had an Efficiency tool.

"Last line of defense~!" Anibal grinned evilly as Kal and I readied our weapons behind her. "Knock, Knock, motherfucker!" She busted down the top of the cube to surprise him. "Time to... die?"

Anibal stared into an empty obsidian cube. She exchanged a glance with Kal and me and shrugged.

"I got nothing. Where'd he go?"

Just to be sure, we dug further into the placed cobblestone only to find more of the cavern walls. No other diverging path.

We lost him?

No. No! We couldn't have lost him! If he got away, then the Cult would know everything about the Paragon-Beginner alliance.

But there really was nothing. Only a chunk of cobblestone plugging a hole in the ceiling.

He built up. Nerdpoling.

"I don't get this guy. Why place down all that cobblestone and lava and obsidian?" Kal asked. "He made it out like it was his final stand."

"Maybe he just wanted to waste our time. Give him a chance to escape."

My eyes were glued to the cobblestone on the ceiling before it dawned on me.

"He's not escaping. He's circling back to finish the job. We need to get back to the surface. NOW!"

[Noman]

There was a shift of sand nearby that drew the attention of Albert and I.

A sand block had broken not too far off. It wasn't taken by an Enderman or disturbed by a Creeper. It was there just a moment ago and now it wasn't.

There was the sound of placed cobblestone from the hole before it was sealed up by the stuff. Someone had placed it. Someone invisible who had nerdpoled up.

Albert drew a Splash Potion and placed a hand to keep me back. "Carys?"

There was no response, though it served to draw the attention of Floyd, Soul, and the other Paragons.

"Speak now!" Albert threatened, drawing another Splash Potion. He thought better of it and lobbed the Splash Potions of Harming directly at where the invisible person had nerdpoled up. There was the shattering of glass as the potions doused the area maroon particles that would have killed anyone.

There was a beat of silence; the deep breath before the plunge.

An invisible figure raised a rocket-loaded crossbow before a high whistle pierced the air.

Albert dove aside, but there was no way to avoid the wide range of the triple fired rockets. His legs caught the damage and it was all I could do to leap back and avoid a fatal blow. I didn't have full body armor!

The crossbow reloaded only for a blue blur to dart in and cleave through the invisible space with his sword. Floyd's Speed Hack allowed him to tear his sword out for three more swings, meeting resistance on only two. There was a hiss of pain as the crossbow flew off before getting put away.

Floyd clicked his tongue as his smoky eyes scanned the desert for any floating items. Gunnah was hiding again, nursing his wounds.

Unsatisfied, Floyd brought out both arms and fired MultiAura like buckshot. Ebony spines riddled the desert sands in a wide range before him, but there was no spillage of gear. Gunnah had moved.

I picked up Albert and dragged him towards the others. Reuben tossed a Splash Potion of Healing his way while Spaatz, Dyson, and Stayer formed a defensive perimeter beside Soul.

"Put the chestplate on, Noman!" Floyd shouted, his eyes never leaving the desert. He fired a few more volleys of MultiAura in a wide spread as he backed towards the Paragons. "It's you he wants!"

I didn't need to be told twice and quickly pulled it over my torso. It wouldn't spare me from the damage of those piercing or exploding projectiles, but the Health Boost and Resistance would keep me alive.

Floyd's eyes darted nervously before he launched another volley of MultiAura. None of the spines were sticking into anything. He should've grappled Gunnah instead of slashing him away. It dealt considerable damage to the unarmored assassin, but now he was undetectable, and Floyd's Speed Hack would soon expire.

"This tactical shit's getting really old!" Soul complained as he scanned around. I refrained from correcting him, instead focusing everything on spotting the hidden assassin.

Suddenly, a torch was broken from our campsite, casting a portion of the desert into darkness. Floyd and the Paragons fired projectiles in that direction but struck nothing. Moments later, another torch broke. Then another.

"Does he think the darkness will make it harder to see him?"

"No..." Dyson pointed. "He's bringing the Mobs to us."

With the absence of light, the Mobs skirting the outside of our perimeter began to gravitate towards us. Husks, Creepers, Skeletons. All of them thirsty for blood.

Floyd fired MultiAura at the Skeletons, taking them out like trash. The Paragons started firing upon them as well.

"Don't get distracted!" Floyd ordered before his Speed Hack ran out and he went limp. Soul ran over and caught him, holding him like a minigun like he did earlier.

I spotted a Splash Potion emerge from thin air before it doused a group of Mobs who then suddenly vanished. Gunnah had cloaked a couple of Mobs to further complicate things.

I dropped down an Ender chest and pulled out my supply of Healing Potions. Husks and Skeletons were undead, after all.

I started throwing them before us, killing the visible undead and invisible undead alike. I stood at the front, far enough away from the group, uncaring for the dangerous hissing that came from invisible Creepers. They blew up before me, but the Severe Shield withstood the worst of it.

If ever there was a chance to strike, Gunnah would do it... NOW!

I spied the crossbow before the whistle, donning my Bottes Zephyr and flipping to create a wall of air blocks. They blocked the rockets and spared me the smallest amount of damage. Barely a Heart.

A volley of arrows and MultiAura launched at where the crossbow had fired, but once again the assassin slipped away.

"Fight like a man, Gunnah!" Soul shouted, swiveling Floyd around.

After a while, a block suddenly materialized upon the desert sands. A lone chunk of cobblestone. Then another was placed atop it. And another.

The nerdpole got up to four before we directed fire upon it. Gunnah was building up fast, however, and our shots only hit where he was rather than where he was going to be. He got some serious height on us, forming a platform some thirty meters high. His invisibility wore off then, his form silhouetted against the moon as he stared down upon us.

He aimed his crossbow and fired down.

"SCATTER!" Spaatz shouted.

Everyone dove away from the deadly whistle, but only half of us got out unscathed. Soul and Floyd took a hit to the back, as did Albert and Reuben. I looked to the Beta males worriedly before glaring up at Gunnah, my mind made up.

I ran under his platform, then kept running.

"You want me? Come and get me!" I challenged as I lured him away from the others. No one else would die because of me.

I had three Splash Potions prepared. The first one, a Splash Potion of Swiftness II, I used on myself to rush forward.

Gunnah took the bait better than expected. He broke off his bombardment of the group and instead used a Slow Falling Potion to float down after me, a deadly whistle accompanying his descent.

The blast struck and launched me into the sand dune. I landed painfully, but rolled with the impact to get back onto my feet and clear the dune just as more blue sparks exploded behind me.

I can do this. I thought, trying to calm myself. In my hands I clutched the other two Splash Potions I brewed. Weakness and Slowness. The Paralysis combo. Just like the alchemists do.

I just needed the opportunity to hit him. After he was paralyzed, I could take his weapons and then... and then the decision would be taken out of my hands, but that was all I could do!

Carys and the Paragons would kill him once he was at their mercy. But... there was nothing I could do about it! All I could do was survive, take the hits, and paralyze him! He was an assassin! An unstoppable berserker who wouldn't rest until I was dead.

Just as Carys warned. I had disregarded her words at the time, but now I could see the futility of being a pacifist towards someone fully intending to kill me.

Nevertheless, I'd face him. Alone. That way no one else would get caught up in the crossfire. Not like Harbord.

As I ran down the sand dune, I caught a glimpse of a cracked sandstone ruin. It was in the shape of a pyramid with two towers emblazoned with hourglass symbols made up of some orange block, and an entrance that looked like an open-mouthed face. The crack ran up along the face and through the back side of the pyramid, but there was no doubt it was an enclosed structure.

On a whim, I ran to it and slipped inside, knowing Gunnah would follow. The temple must've been like those preexisting Minecraftia structures, so Gunnah likely knew the layout better than me, but it was an enclosed space. Perfect for catching people with splash potions.

The interior was small with sandstone pillars and an alcove in the upper section of the pyramid. There was also a hole in the floor, showing off a steep pit and, at the bottom, a crater that looked like several bombs had gone off.

I had little time to admire the scenery, for a Spider jumped out at me from the shadows of the temple. I dispatched it quickly before kicking on the Bottes Zephyr and stowing myself into the alcove above. I laid down flat on my stomach and took out the splash potions as I gazed into the entrance chamber.

It was a good vantage point for when Gunnah came in. I was positioned in a way where I could see him before he saw me. Throwing from above worked in my favor anyway.

Having only one of each potion meant I only had one chance. If either missed, it would be over.

I stilled my breath as I heard the approaching footsteps. They were fast as he ran in, but slowed to a stop near the entrance where he proceeded to survey the scene. He wasn't being careless.

Come on. Move towards the center! I thought, my heart hammering as I raised both arms to throw my potions.

For a long time, Gunnah didn't move further into the temple. Instead of hearing the assassin take another step, I heard the deadly whistle as he fired at the pillars. He didn't destroy them, but the burst of blue sparks caused damage to anything in the vicinity of the pillars. He fired at each one, thinking I was hiding.

Unsatisfied, he began to move around. Cautiously. I peeked my head over the alcove, but only caught a glimpse of his shoes as he circled the temple. He didn't dare move to the center where that pit was.

Does he have a sixth sense for these things!? Move, Gunnah!

Again he stopped moving, too far away for me to be sure the potions would hit him. He just stood there, patiently.

Then, he took a deep breath through his nose. I could hear him inhaling the air. Tasting it.

He took a few more experimental sniffs as he stepped forward and within range. My eyes bugged out and I reared back both arms.

NOW!

I flung the potions straight down only for Gunnah's eyes to snap open. He spun and leapt forward, firing his crossbow rockets in the process. Straight into my alcove.

Blue sparks danced in my vision as I took a tremendous amount of damage. I cried out in pain, catching only the slightest sound of broken glass as the Potions landed. Gunnah grunted and fired again. My Severe Shield took another hit as I cowered under my hands.

The barrage halted as Gunnah drank from a bucket. Then there were more footsteps, fast and sharp, as he got right underneath my alcove and broke the blocks I was laying on with a pickaxe. I fell with a pained gasp before my world erupted into explosive agony.

The assassin unloaded rocket after rocket at me, butchering my boosted Health and making my Resistance seem as useful as paper. I screamed into the floor, unable to think as pain seared me down to my bones.

"That's some chestplate." He commended, the words being the first I'd heard from him. "But you scream just like any man."

"St... stop... please..." I begged, my voice weak. "...don't... want... to fight..."

"Then lay there and die."

I felt despair as Gunnah clicked the crossbow back and loaded another rocket. I was in too much pain to do anything and Gunnah wasn't getting close enough for me to try. He'd keep blasting until I died.

Bailey. Cobb. I'm sorry...

I screwed my eyes shut and tensed my body, ready for the bone-rattling and searing blue sparks to rip through my health.

Gunnah spun around and fired at the entrance and the fast-approaching footsteps. Carys vaulted over the trio of rockets with her scythe, her purple boots crashing into Gunnah's face as she knocked the both of them into the pit in the center of the temple floor. They fell down out of sight and it was all I could do to roll over and glimpse them before I passed out from the pain.
