Cruz watched as his Lieutenant fell to the hard concrete ground. His heart stopped as he tried to make it down in one piece, both Shay and Brett taking care of Casey with Severide's help. Another ambo had arrived but the man they had tried so much to save hadn't survived the fall, Casey being much luckier. Cruz's hands were shaking as he made it to the ground as Matt was wheeled away on a gurney and into ambo 61, heading towards Med.

"Take a few deep breaths, he'll be ok." Herrmann clapped a hand on Cruz's shoulder in comfort.

"Everyone pack it up, we're heading to Med." Boden walked towards his buggy and all companies rolled out towards the hospital.

The ride over was ever so silent, everyone trying to keep good thoughts for Casey, hoping that this injury wasn't life threatening. They parked in the authorized vehicles zone and everyone hopped down in time to see the doors shut behind the gurney. They walked up just in time to hear Maggie telling them to head over to trauma 3. Boden ushered everyone in a waiting room behind April and they waited for an update.

"Hey chief?" Shay made her way towards Boden.

"Shay?" He looked at her puzzled.

"Did someone call Gabby?" Boden looked arond the room to the rest of the firehouse and recieved nos all around.

"I'll give her a call." He distanced himself from the group to make his phone call.

"It's alright chief, I already gave her a call." Maggie had overheard everything and called to deliver the news.

"Thank you Maggie." This was the kind of news that he hated to deliver to families. He looked back at his men and his eyes landed on Cruz. He was sitting in a chair with his hands under his chin, his legs bumping up and down. "Joe Cruz." Cruz looked up at his chief and gave him a questioning look.

"Chief?" He stood up finally.

"Come with me." He let him outside of the waiting room before he spoke to him. "You have nothing to blame yourself for Joe."

"If I had managed to keep that man calm Chief, we wouldn't be here right now." He ran his hands over his head and started pacing.

"You know it's not that simple Cruz. We can't always predict the way victims will react and sometimes things don't go the way we want them. You need to keep good thoughts, Casey's a tough guy."

The two of them turned when they heard the ER doors slid open and they heard Gabby's voice.

"Where is he Maggie?" She ran in frantically.

"He's in trauma 3 but I can't let you go in there." Maggie held her shoulders.

"What happened chief?" Gabby laid eyes on Boden next.

"Fell twenty feet during a rescue."

"I'm really sorry Gabby, I tried to save him." Cruz felt his heart break in pieces as he looked at Gabby's worried features.

"Don't go there Joe. Matt is strong, he'll pull through, he has too." She pulled him in her arms. Their moment was interrupted by the sound of a curtain being opened. It was Matt being wheeled out, the whole staff behind him.

"Connor, what's going on?" She took a few steps closer to him.

"Matt suffered a twenty feet fall. We did a full body x-ray and he has a fractured pelvis and clavicle but right now, we're taking him up for a CT to make sure that his head hasn't taken a higger hit that what the physical exam shows."

"Which is?" She asked, trying to hard to keep the trembling out of her voice.

"A severe concussion."

"And what are you going to do about the fractures?" She looked down at her hand as she felt someone link their fingers through hers, Shay suddenly by her side.

"Matt was lucky in his bad luck. The pelvis only needs to be stabalized because the bones haven't shifted, meaning we get to avoid surgery but the clavicle needs to be repaired. If you'll excuse me, I'll go check on him and i'll give you an update as soon as I have one."

"Thanks." She said to his back and finally let Shay pull him into a hug.

"He'll pull through, he's tough." She whispered to her ear as a sob escaped Gabby's lips.

"He has too." She let Shay's embrace sooth her a bit.

Maggie had come to tell them about thirty minutes later that Matt was being wheeled into surgery and suggested they moved to the second floor where the OR was situated. Gabby had started facing the front of the room they were waiting in, her arms wrapped around her middle out of instinct.

"Gabriela, you should take a seat." Boden made his way to her.

"I can't chief, he needs to pull through, for all of us." Wallace followed her gaze and immediately he knew what she meant.

"Does he know?" The question was simple and she knew what it meant.

"I just found out before Maggie called. I can't lose him Wallace." She finally broke down, Boden taking her in his arms.

"If I know anything is that Casey is strong and he loves you and those kids more than anything. He'll fight like hell and when he comes back to us, he'll be over the moon from this news." She nodded in his chest before he finally let her go, taking a seat next to Shay who wrapped her arm around her shoulder and let her lean her head against her own as they waited.

Gabby looked at the needles of the clock on the wall in front of them and the needles seemed to ticking by ever so slowly. It felt like forever when Connor Rhodes made another appearance, Gabby instantly getting up. "How is he?" Her body was filled with nerves as they waited.

"The surgery went as planned and he is up in recovery."

"What about the CT?" She moved from one foot to the other, Shay giving her moral support, her hands on Gabby's shoulders.

"It showed exactly what we thought, a very severe concussion. Now he's still sedated and unfortunately can only get one visitor at a time but you can go sit with him.

"Thank you Dr Rhodes." Boden extended his hand for Conor to shake.

"Anytime Chief. Gabby, I'll take you to him." She turned to look at everyone.

"Call me if you need anything Gabby."

"Thanks Wallace." She smiled at him before following Conor, Shay close behind her.

Boden watched her go and turned to his men. "I know this is going to be difficult but we still have a shift to finish. We can come back in the morning after it's over." Everyone nodded and turned around but their hearts and mind were only in one place, right here with Casey.

The elevator ride to the third floor felt like utter torture as the space was silent. Matt's room was only a few steps off to the left as they exited the elevators.

"Talk to him, it'll help."

"Thanks."

"Make them page me if you need anything."

"I will, thank you." She smiled faintly at him before he left.

"Can you do me a favour?" Gabby turned to look at Shay.

"Sure, anything."

"The kids are at school and I don't want him to be alone when he wakes up. Do you mind going to pick them up? I'll give them a head's up that you'll be coming."

"And what I'm supposed to tell them? You know they'll see right through the fact that you're not picking them up."

"I don't know." She sighed, looking at Matt that was plugged to all the machines and drips. "I don't know anymore." She was at a loss for words right now. He had gotten in too many accidents on the job since they met and she wondered how much longer he'd be able to be lucky the way he had been so far.

"I know it's scary right now but Matt is strong and the two of you will be back in no time. It'll take care of the kids, don't worry." She hugged her.

"Thanks Leslie."

"I'll let you two alone." She kissed her cheek. "You better wake up soon buddy, your wife and kids need you." She patted his leg before making Gabby promise she'd update her as soon as Matt's condition changed before she left, leaving husband aNd wife alone together.

"You have horrible timing." She took his hand in hers and looked at the monitor, the steady beeping indicating his vitals were strong. "There's a positive pregnancy test lying on the floor at home and I can't even tell you that you'll be a daddy again." A silent tear slid down her cheek.

"Gabby?" She turned at the sound of Antonio's voice.

"Antonio?!" She obviously hadn't expected to see him here since she hadn't called him. "How long have you been there?" She blinked her tears away.

"Long enough to find out I'll be an uncle again." He grinned at her, her smile now matching his own. "Were you guys planning this?" He asked as he walked farther inside the room.

"No, It came as a total surprise." She hugged him.

"Congrats sis." He whispered in her hair.

"Now all Matt has to do is wake up so I can tell him." She took a seat on the bed again.

"How is he?" They turned at the sound of Laura's voice.

"Well they had to go in and repair his shoulder and he has a fractured pelvis but Connor said that it hasn't shifted so that's the good news because all he needs is a brace. Other than that, I have nothing."

"They'll probably come by in the morning to give you a clearer picture." Laura hugged her. "How are you feeling?" They smiled at each other.

"Great so far. There was no signs this time." She remembered her two pregnancies that brought their share of nautious bouts in the first three months but this time nothing.

"What about the kids? Do they know what's going on?" He questionned her.

"Leslie is with them by now. I just don't know what to tell them so they won't be scared he'll just leave them."

"How about we head over there and give Leslie a hand?" Laura looked at Antonio.

"It would give you a little break to concentrate on Matt and the baby." Antonio agreed rubbing her shoulder.

"Thanks a lot guys."

"Anytime sis. You'll keep us updated if he wakes up?"

"Absolutely. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for helping with the kids."

"You would have done the same, love you sis." He kissed her forehead.

"Love you too Tonio." She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.

"Call if you need anything." Laura hugged her.

"Thanks." Antonio gave her one last squeeze before he and Laura left to see how the Dawson-Casey brood was holding up.

She stayed at his bedside and watched the monitors until she was alerted to Dr Rhodes presence as the door slid open and he walked through them.

"Hey, how are you holding up?" He questionned her as he took Matt's chart in his hands.

"I'd feel a lot better if he'd wake up." She sighed. "So what are we looking at Conor?" She wanted to know some real facts, even if she knew there's a possibility they'd be hard to hear.

"Well the surgery on his clavicle went smoothly so I don't see anything special except some physical therapy once the wound is all healed up. His pelvis on the other hand will take a bit more time."

"What are you saying?" She had so many different scenarios running through her mind right now.

"I'm saying that he'll have a longer recovery because a pelvis isn't a black and white recovery. He'll have to wear a brace for a while and it'll be touch and go for a definite timeline."

"Will he be able to go back to fire fighting?"

"I have no reason to think that he won't but he'll have to be patient."

"Not his strongest feature." This made Conor chuckle.

"I bet it isn't." He wrote down a few more words before putting his chart back down. "But don't worry, he'll be back on his feet in no time." He promised her.

"Thanks for everything Conor"

"Anytime. Try to get some rest, I'll swing by in the morning on my way in."

"Good night."

"Night Gabby." The lights were already dimmed so Gabby pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat down on it, her eyes always trained on Matt's still unconscience form. Day had turned into night and still he hadn't woken up. Shay had sent her a picture of her brood with pizza in hand and smiles on their faces and it put a smile on her own face, her hand coming to rest of her still flat belly.

"Those are your brothers and sisters for you." She started talking to the baby. She was in the very early stages but she had done the same with both pregnancies, talking to the baby every night. "They don't know about you yet but I know they'll be excited to have another baby brother or sister. One thing I know is that your daddy will be the most surprised of them all. We talked about you before but neither of us really knew we wanted you. You're going to be born into a big family and we are going to love you so much."

Matt felt his body ache as his eyes fluttered open, Gabby's voice pulling him back to the surface. It didn't take all that much for his eyes to adjust to the lighting because it was dim and he noticed it was dark outside. She was alone in the room with him so he looked at her while she spoke to herself. The more he listened, the more the wheels were turning in his head but it was when she mentionned him that his lips formed a smile.

"Gabby?" He sounded hoarse but Gabby looked up when she heard her name.

"Welcome back baby." She stood up quickly when he tried to sit up higher in bed. "Matt, don't." She gently pushed him back down against the mattress. "You can't move."

"It's ok." He simply said, his mind on what he had heard while waking up. He raised his hand and brushed a thumb along her cheek.

"It's good to finally have you awake." She closed her eyes and enjoyed the feeling of his rough thumb against her cheek.

"I woke up to the best news." She opened her eyes and looked at him, not realizing that he might had heard her talk to the baby. "Gabby, are we really?" He didn't finish his sentence, his insides too excited.

"We are." She chuckled, finally being able to let the good news invade her now that Matt was out of the woods.

"But how?" Obviously he knew the how but it was a certainty that Gabby was on the pill so it was just such a shock to him.

"It's our little miracle." She had her hand on her stomach.

"The best gift I could ask for." He put his hand over hers, the two over the moon about the new life growing inside her. It had come from the profound love they had for each other and their life would be altered once againt by it.
