Several days later...

"Hey, Dawson...", Davis strode through the E.R. doors as Dawson was a few steps ahead of her. "Dawson-", Davis held onto Gabby's shoulder as she attempted to get her attention.

Gabby turned to face her, throwing her question eyes as she lifted her eyebrows, "Sorry, you said something?", Gabby looked over her shoulder as Davis kept quiet for a couple of seconds.

"No, no, I didn't say anything, I-," Davis swallowed hard and spoke, "I called your name a couple of times and you weren't responding..."

"Sorry, I-", Gabby scratched her forehead for a moment, "I got distracted for a minute...", she shifted on her feet while looking around.

"Right, it happens... if there is something I can help, you know...", Davis declared as her eyes roamed Gabby's face. "I don't mean to be nosey or anything... I'm here if you need to talk to someone", Davis smiled warmly at her.

Gabby opened her mouth a few times, "Thank you...," she breathed deeply. "I might be a little distant, but it has nothing to do with you", Gabby gave her a tight smile.

Suddenly Lucie had an idea that could cheer Gabby up, "How about we stop at the bakery you like and buy a couple of donuts? You know how I love sugar in the morning...", Davis squeezed Gabby's arm lightly.

"Yeah... I'd love a cup of coffee as well, I skipped breakfast today trying to not be late, then the first call came in as soon as I stepped in the firehouse, lucky me", Gabby laughed nervously as rambled. "You get it..."

"Of course," the paramedic replied quietly, "we have to change that, ambulance 74 can't have her PIC without her morning coffee", Lucie winked at her. "...come on"

...

They were in the ambulance eating their donuts and drinking their coffee...

Lucie hasn't known Gabby for very long, however, she could tell something was bothering her, someone or something had upset her... "Casey give any clue as to where are you two going?" Lucie tried to make conversation.

"No... I expect he will tell me in the last minute, so my chances of having packed the proper clothing is slim...", Gabby sipped her coffee, "...he has been secretive about the whole thing." Gabby was looking straight ahead of her as Lucie was looking at the side of her face as chewed her donut.

"Hmmm,", Davis swallowed the food, "...He seems a romantic guy, I bet he has a great weekend planned for you-", Gabby cut in.

"I've been second thoughts whether it's the best time to travel right now, I probably should talk him out of it, you know," Gabby glanced at her partner.

Lucie was tempted to read Gabby's expression, "You were so excited about it when you told me, what changed your mind?" Lucie closed the box of donuts and turned her body to watch her closely.

"With everything that is going on...", her partner doesn't know of their surrogacy plan, "... spending money with a trip is not a good idea right now...", Gabby pressed her lips together, "I'll call Matt when we get back-", Lucie interjected.

"Wait, wait...", Lucie could only try to get to the bottom of Gabby's sudden change. "Remember a few weeks ago when I unloaded on you all my problems with my mother, you listened to me, without judging me or dismissing my concerns, so you can trust me now..." Lucie covered Gabby's hand with hers.

Gabby tilted her head as blinked back tears, "I know...", her voice almost a whisper, "I've been a train wreck since I... I found Matt's wedding ring in our home... I'm sure that the ring wasn't there until three or four days ago, he was keeping it somewhere else... Perhaps, Firehouse 51, or our friend's place...".

"Okay... there must be an explanation behind it... I suppose that's the reason you are conflicted regarding the trip?" Davis reasoned.

"Yeah...", she leaned her head back against the headrest, closing her eyes... "I have mixed feelings about it... I love Matt, there is no doubt,", she opened her eyes and turned her head, staring at Davis..."It's a long story, but we were married a couple of years ago, and we divorced a few months after I went to Puerto Rico. He was the one who asked for a divorce in the first place., I barely could speak two words after hearing him say those words..."

"Wow, this-this is huge, I totally get it you have been feeling disturbed...", Davis felt that was more to the story, though she knew enough to figure they still loved each other even after all the troubles they had faced in the past.

"The last straw came a few seconds later when he questioned if I were willing to come back to Chicago, my hesitation sealed the deal for him, he was gonna send the divorce papers next day..."

"He had the papers arranged already even before consulting you and finding out your sentiments towards the matter," Lucie's voice was melancholic.

"I quickly answered that I was gonna sign the papers... and wished him all the best and turned off the phone, I didn't give him the chance to say more... One day I heard from his lawyer that we were divorced... he called me and we had a heart-to-heart conversation, it was painful... my heart was in a million pieces all over again..."

"Gabby... he should know how you feel. Tell him you found the ring..."

Looking into Lucie's eyes, "I suspect he intends to propose to me... I can't see any other reason for him to have that ring in our home, the trip...", frustrated Gabby covered her face with both hands.

"Hey...", Lucie pulled her hands from her face. "This is something you two have to talk through, Gabby... you can't let fear overcome your progress, love conquers all. You repeatedly told me that a lot of times when I was thinking of giving on reconnecting with my mother."

"He has noticed something has been off with me... he texted me a couple of times this morning, and I haven't sent him a reply yet," Gabby turned her face trying to hide her tears from Lucie.

"After all this time you two are meant to be together, even you acknowledge that, so whatever the ring means, you two will face the future together..."

Gabby turned her head to look at Lucie, nodding softly as tears rolled down her face.

Lucie pulled her to a hug, "You'll be fine... I assure you..."

Next day...

"Hey, babe...", Matt walked into the apartment, after locking the door he moved towards Gabby. "I missed you," he leaned down and kissed her lips softly.

"I missed you too...", she put her phone on the center table next to where Casey had dropped his bag.

Gabby had her back leaned against the armrest as her legs were stretched out on the sofa. Matt lifted her legs to sit down close to Gabby... "Are you okay?" Matt asked while rubbing her legs.

Locking eyes with him, Gabby ran the tip of her tongue over her lips. She recalled her conversation with Lucie, but she didn't feel ready to open her heart, not right now when Matt was looking at her like that. With adorable eyes, concerned eyes...

"I guess you discovered the ring in my drawer?" he tilted his head.

Gabby's eyes widened, "How you- I mean, I left it in the same spot-", Casey cut her off.

"You weren't supposed to find the ring... I eft it at Severide's apartment when I lived there-"

Gabby filled in, "Stella and Severide were here a few days ago, so he returned it to you?"

"I had forgotten that you like to organize the drawers from time to time, and I couldn't risk you discovering it, so I took the ring with me yesterday to the firehouse, but I could sense something was bothering you, your replies to my texts were different, even your voice when I called you...", he explained. "I assume you have questions for me and I'll respond to all of them, but before I do, I need you to know that I love you and I want to be with you, married or not, it doesn't matter-", Gabby interjected.

"It does matter, Matt...", she spoke a bit annoyed. "Apart from your dream of having a kid, you have wanted to be married as well. It's alright to express what you aspire to your life, our lives," she exhaled heavily.

Matt nodded absently, Gabby's outburst surprising him, "You are right, I-I asked you to marry me not one time, but almost three times", he stated with a tense smile on his face. "I was ready to ask the same question during our trip, I'm not gonna lie, Gabby", he licked his lips, smiling nervously at her.

"Matt, when you decided alone that you wanted the divorce and had the papers already drawn up, I felt betrayed, you know... We talked later when the whole process was done, however, I wasn't honest enough to confess to you that it broke my heart... How you want to get rid of your old life and dive into your new life with a new woman, with Brett-", Matt cut in.

"Brett wasn't the reason, never would be... at the time I couldn't even call her a close friend... I was hurt and trying to move on. People at Firehouse witnessed my reckless behavior during the calls after you left... I wasn't myself, Gabby... I can tell you I made bad choices, poor choices", his voice trembled with emotion. "I'm not about to make up excuses, everything you have felt I respect it and I accept if you don't trust me right now to be your husband... I'll wait as long as it takes to deserve to be your husband because I love you", he teared up.

"Those unresolved things between us are tiresome, but we must discuss them... I don't want us to pretend to be fine when we are not fine... At the same time, it's exhausting to take breaks, to get together and break up, later get together and break up again... yet I don't know which would be my answer to your proposal, Matt...", she uttered weakly. "Please, don't see it as punishment for the divorce-", Matt interrupted her.

"Hey, I'd never think that of you, I know you, and you know me." Matt pressed his lips together, not wanting to feel disappointed, "I understand, like I said I respect your decision", he looked down, "I am gonna cancel our tickets and the hotel..." he lifted his head to look at Gabby.

Gabby chewed her lips, didn't say anything for a few seconds, "We should go, I mean do you not want to go anymore? You were so thrilled planning our little getaway...".

Matt furrowed, "I thought you wouldn't want to go since you saw the ring...", he licked his lower lip.

"Later we need to revisit your terrible choice of sending me the divorce papers... We know that it's not that easy pick up things from we left off..."

"It takes time and effort... I'm willing to give everything of me to get there...", his eyes moved over her face.

"Now that we cleared the air, let's say that...", Gabby gave him a mischievous smile as she moved to straddle Matt's hips..."We should go ahead with your surprise trip, you put a lot of effort into it, though I have a condition", Gabby cradled his face with both hands.

Matt put his strong arms around her, "Tell me, babe?" her chest flush against his as her arms were wrapped around his neck...

"At some point, you have to tell me where we are going because I have to pack the right clothes-" Gabby paused.

Matt smiled sweetly at her, "Okay...", he took a lock of her hair in his hand. "Are you ready?"

Gabby opened her mouth in surprise, "You serious? Look, you don't-"

"Las Vegas... We are going to Las Vegas."

"What?! Las Vegas, oh my god... I can't believe it... baby...", she hugged him tightly.

Matt couldn't be happier watching his girl content in his arms... where she belongs, only her, nobody else...

Pulling away, "I've never been there...", Gabby kissed him on the lips. "Why did you choose Vegas?"

"You recall the day in our old apartment, we were so frustrated listening to Severide and Brittany's laughs through the whole place while wishing we could get the rest of our life started?"

Gabby nodded, "We both were on 81..."

"I had this crazy idea to fly off to Vegas with my girl and get her to marry me...", he chuckled.

"We would marry in Vegas?! Are you out of your mind?" she questioned as smiled at him.

"Maybe...", he confessed. "Just the two of us this time... not other people sneaking in on our moment before the judge-", Gabby patted his chest.

"Casey! Don't be mean... They are our friends."

"Not all of them...", he lifted his eyebrows to make his point. "Anyway, that was my plan..."

"I liked this side of you... adventurous, madly romantic... I see we could enjoy the Las Vegas even without the wedding part..."

"Me too... Las Vegas is not ready for us", he said in a flirtatious way. Matt closed the gap between them, and they kissed.

Gabby's mouth opened to welcomed his tongue as she moved slowly in his lap causing a little friction amidst their lower parts...

Casey's hands slip down to rest over her backside, squeezing it a few times while they kissed hungrily...

Breathless... "Hotel room better have champagne, strawberries, chocolate...", Gabby stated as brushing her lips against his...

"It's the first item on my list... I love you, babe... you are the only one for me, ...", he declared between kisses.

They went back to kiss each other passionately, making it to the bed a few minutes later... moans and gasps coming from their bedroom... declarations of love and a future together...
