Chapter 17: Carlos

Carlos groaned and it felt like he had been on an all night bender. He tried to open his eyes but failed because his eyes felt heavier than lead. He moved his feet, and felt a hard wooden floor with his bare feet.

He realized that he was sitting up, in a wooden chair, and tied, quite expertly according to the attempts to free himself from the restraints that held his wrists behind his back, the ones binding his ankles to the chair and the decent length of rope around his midsection that kept him tied firmly to the back of the chair.

He struggled fervently to open his eyes and when his eyes fully opened and adjusted in the dim and he saw the broken windows had plywood nailed down, blocking out most of the light, except for a corner that allowed in a small beam of light the size of a penlight flashlight. With the amount of light that he had, he could see that below him the wood floor was old and scarred, blackened with age. The dust and cobwebs as well as the decaying walls told him that this building didn't get used much and that meant the building was practically deserted.

Turning his head, which was all that he could move, he saw that the room had a small closet on his left with an accordion door. When he looked up, he saw that there was a large stain on the ceiling, probably from a leaky roof. His eyes swept the room taking in the cracks in the plaster on all four walls.

He decided that he had seen all he needed to see in the room and he struggled against his bonds. He felt the rope cut into the skin on his wrists, feeling he warm blood on his fingers and he hoped that his blood would help him slip his hands out of the rope.

When the door opened, the extra light from the hallway caused him to blink his eyes. When he was able to see again, he caught a glance of the top of a staircase. He knew then that he was possibly on the second floor.

The person entered the room and hit the switch, turning on the single bulb that hung down on a long wire from the ceiling.

He blinked again and when he could see clearly he saw that it was Daisy standing before him. "Daisy?" He asked as he blinked a couple of times, wondering if he had a concussion and was hallucinating.

"Hello, Carlos," she said with a soft sigh as she walked up to him and stopped about a foot from him.

He was bewildered about her presence and as he studied her face, he didn't see any signs of distress or any indications that she was a captive. "Daisy, what are you doing here?"

"You have what I want and I am tired of waiting."

He shook his head in disbelief wondering if he was in a coma and this was all a strange dream, but he knew it wasn't since he could still feel the warm blood on his hands.

She sighed as she braced her hands on his shoulders and leaned towards him, so that he could smell her flowery perfume. "Tony was your friend and he had been your informant when you were a cop. You knew him better than anyone and he trusted you. So, it makes sense that he would send you the information or put it in a place that only you would know about."

He shook his head. "I have no idea where Tony would put it."

She leaned back, her lips curling up in anger and slapped him hard across the face.

Carlos could feel a little bit of blood flowing down his face from where her nails had cut into the skin of his cheek.

"You have seen what happens to those who don't give me what I want," she hissed out.

"Pilar was your friend and you had your lackey kill her."

She threw her head back to release a cruel laugh before she leaned forward and lifted his chin with one sharp fingernail. "I killed Pilar. I choked the life from her."

So many unanswered questions were rumbling around in his bruised head that the connections were unable to click together in his mind.

"So, since you don't want to tell me where Tony hid the flash drive, then I shall just send in my friend," she said with a nasty smile. "I believe you know him." She didn't wait for him to respond as she spun around and left the room, leaving the door open.

Carlos took several deep, relaxing breaths, knowing exactly who was coming when he heard heavy footsteps coming up the stairs. He also had a clear idea on what Daisy's friend was going to do to him.
