Eagle bolted upright, only for her vision to blur and head to throb. She had been put on a hard cot on a stone floor. The room was dark, and every movement she made only worsened the pain.
The Eagle remembered nothing of what had happened, only the chair and tortured screams from...someone. But nothing surfaced when she tried to figure out who it was. The agony was pushed to the back of her mind when the metal door clicked before swinging open. A man she recognized strode in
"Adler, Steh auf, du hast eine andere Mission." [Eagle, get up, you have another mission.]
Involuntarily, her limbs stood and after putting on her wing pack, Eagle followed. They wove through the maze of hallways to a room. She knew this room...from somewhere in her memory. But this time there was no one else there, a map hung on the wall. "Adler, this mission is solo, two targets, level three. You leave immediately, use your enhancement as needed. Go to the weapons room, take a commlink, and then go."
Her face was blank as she left, collecting the commlink, bow, and two handguns. The men walking past her in the hallways, veered away, fear flashing in their eyes. The Eagle soared through the sky, often staying above the clouds and out of sight. She arrived at dusk at the location and watched as the targets exited a house, noting the nervous looks they gave each other. After landing on the ground Eagle shuddered, letting the light filter through her body. Rendering her almost completely invisible to the naked eye. Creeping closer, Eagle took her bow out and notched an arrow, aiming for one of the target's neck and letting the arrow fly. It hit home and the first target fell, the other two whipped around and looked for whoever had fired the arrow but Eagle had vanished. Her wings pulled her up into the air where she rapidly-fired two more arrows, hitting exactly where she had aimed. Something tickled at the back of the Eagle's mind. After making sure there were no other witnesses The Eagle collected the targets and disposed of the bodies.
Within the first year The Eagle was with Hydra she stopped speaking completely. Her speech turned to varying clicks and whistles, her mental distress going deeper than anyone knew. They began to use cryofreeze more and more often, not wanting to risk relapse.
Only when commanded to speak did her mouth form words.
2011 ended and 2012 came, often Eagle would hear her handler whispering to others about a group called the "Avengers" and a timeline but anything retained disappeared once her mind was wiped. 2012 merged into 2013, her missions slowed, instead they focused on training, improving their weapon to make her unstoppable.
2014 came.
The Eagle became a famed ghost story, used to explain the unexplainable, she joined the Soldat's stories. Hands becoming bloodier and bloodier as the years slipped away. Hydra was always careful to keep Eagle's mind fresh. Many said that the winged person would appear and disappear within an instant, her arrow always struck its mark. Some said she didn't look human. With the metal talons that grew out of her nails, achieved with a surgery done by Hydra scientists. Agents had complained about The Eagle's conscious screams that had echoed through the hallways. Her canine teeth had been sharpened and glinted metallically in the light. Hydra had infused metal into her bones and teeth, strengthening her. But her body harbored scars that could never be healed by the serum. The Eagle's life became a murky blur of missions, taking on the role as it had been designed. Making it better than Hydra had planned. She was more powerful, quieter, easier to control.
The Eagle was kept in the dark about the timeline, until one night. The cryo freeze chamber hissed and whirred as she blinked away the frost covering her lashes. Shivers wracked her body as Eagle stepped down off of the platform, cat-green eyes surveying the serious look on her handler's face.
"Adler?"
"Bereit, die" [Ready to comply] her empty voice said as retrieved her gear before going to a room full of people. The chatter ceased when she entered, but her eyes were drawn to the silent, metal-armed observer in the back. Eagle moved over, standing beside him, awaiting the mission. The handler argued with others before coming over and barking orders at her.
"Adler, our timeline has been moved up. Tonight you will visit our leader with the Soldat"
She let out a series of clicks, eyes roving around the room.
Traveling to the leader's mansion was a blur, Eagle following Soldat in compliance, neither one questioning the mission. They took a back entrance into the house, Soldat growling in German, his low rumble cutting through the fog in her mind.
"When he comes in, block the doorway"
She clicked her teeth together, waiting in the shadows, wings shuffling. Minutes passed before a tall man strode in, rifling through the fridge. Eagle moved to the doorway, her wings flared out menacingly behind her. The silver-gold feathers catching in the light. She watched as the man turned and caught sight of the Soldier sitting at his table. Immediately, the man tensed but his voice was calm as he asked:
"Want some Milk?". The Eagle chose that moment to hiss, satisfaction bubbling up as the man jumped and clutched his chest as he saw her in full uniform. But quickly his face turned from one of surprise to one of pride. "You're the one we kidnapped several years ago, correct? Look at you now, what a powerful, beautiful weapon." The man stalked closer but was cut off by a woman's voice, sounding from the hallway.
"Mr. Pierce, I'm going now. Bye-bye!"
"Goodnight Renata" he waited until the door closed before his hand moved towards the Eagle but she hissed and flashed the retractable talons that had been attached to her fingernails.
"Not much of a talker are we?" The man moved away but froze when the woman's voice sounded again.
"Mr. Peirce? I forgot my phone Sir. . ." she came around the corner and froze in shock.
"Oh Renata, if only you had knocked. Now I have to kill you." In an instant, the man had drawn a gun and shot her. Something loosened in Eagle's mind, the woman had features similar to someone the Eagle had known. Before. Quickly she shook the feeling off, this was her mission and she had to complete it. The meeting took an hour and then they were gone, the plan set in stone.
