The sound of Delphine's footsteps behind me lessened the surprise of her arms wrapping around my waist as her body pressed against my back.

I hum in reply, there's no point in denying what is so obviously true. Delphine's correct when she assumes that I'll probably make her life difficult in every other aspect of our… relationship? Giving her control when we're intimate is one thing, but all else… well, that's a different story. However I have no desire to get into it now - I suspect there will be plenty of time for that in the future. And it seems Delphine is of the same opinion. She remains silent, and I feel her gaze upon me as I wash, and still silent, she takes the soap from me and glides it over my back, pulling the hair that I've freed to the side to brush the back of my neck. When her hands reach my ass I stifle a chuckle.
"You wouldn't be taking advantage of the situation, would you?" I tease her, wiggling a little.
"Not at all," I hear the smile on her voice.
We barely dry ourselves, our bodies still covered in droplets of water when she tosses the towel into the hamper, and pushes us into the bedroom. This time I don't hesitate to throw myself into the bed, while Delphine moves around the house, locking the front door, then back into the living room, picking up our clothes scattered across the floor, and switching off the lights. I watch her move about, until she finally returns to the room, laying next to me and pulling up the covers, the lamp on the nightstand casting a soft light. She scoots closer, and as she has done almost every time we're like this, her arm wraps around my waist and pulls us together.
Unlike the previous times, when my mind settles down, it's not the past where it lingers, but on the present and future, and what this means going forward.
"Is this some sort of reward for having agreed with you?" I ask, not as an accusation, but still curious about what she makes of this.
"Don't you think it's a bit late to worry about that now?" Delphine mumbles, the tiredness returning to her voice, but I want an answer, and rise to an elbow, looking at her pointedly. She breathes out. "No, it's not."
"So, if I had said no, we would be here all the same?" I arch my brow.
She shakes her head. "No, probably not. But that would only be because you wouldn't be the person I thought you were," Delphine explains. "It's not a reward, but it's because of it."
"Isn't that basically the same thing?" I provoke a little, rolling my eyes.
She paused thoughtfully, the tip of her fingers dance across my waist. "Maybe a little," Delphine replies after some time. "But I still think it's important to distinguish both cases."
I sigh, and let my head rest against her shoulder, feeling her embrace tighten. "Hopefully you'll be able to explain to your friends the nuances of the situation we're in," I say. "I have the feeling they're not very familiar with gray areas."
"Is that how you see what you're doing? You think you're operating in gray areas?" she asks, and I can hear disbelief in the tone of her voice.
"I am this time," I say without raising my voice, but with determination. "If I'm going to help you and your kind catch these guys…"
"Maybe you should be sure that's what you'll be doing before you start making any sort of demands," she interrupts my reasoning. "Talk with whoever you must talk, then we'll see."
I twist my lips, frowning. "Just so you know… I'm putting a lot on the line for you."
"You're not the only one, Cosima," She reminds me, and, to be honest, she really shouldn't have to.
I'm not entirely sure of what could happen to her if her bosses found out what she's up to, who she's negotiating an alliance with. But it's not too difficult to foresee the damage it could do to her career - if she had any career to speak of if this was discovered.
And just like that, my protests are deflated. At least for the moment, Delphine has found a particularly exceptional way to silence me. She wasn't rude, she didn't antagonize me, she was simply pointing out a fact that often I forget. I don't want to think of it as a selfish view of the world on my part, but more because I'm still adjusting to our new positions. For a while, I've seen her as someone I needed to understand, to interpret and make sense of her actions. Now that I know what side is she on, I need to look at her differently, not as an enemy, but not an ally either. I suspect she sees me the same way, and if it comes to choosing sides, I don't expect her to stand by me, not if it means to go against the bureau. The same way I won't be able to defend her if Siobhan decides that an alliance with them is not to our benefit.
I analyze where we stand, how small our wiggle room is, while at the same time, I'm warmed by Delphine's body pressed to mine, the ghost of her fingers gliding across my skin. I lose the notion of time, but Delphine has fallen asleep, her hand loosely grasping my hip, her breathing even and light. I move slowly, to not disturb her, and reach for the light switch and turn it off.
