Garlic Bread: The future, while unknown to most of my wonderful readers, holds many great adventures ahead. :D

The days passed slowly and her recovery even more so. Aubrey waited impatiently for the day she could walk on her own. However today was the last day of Nano injections, Tony had informed her yesterday that her blood levels were finally returning to normal and her organs had started to heal from the damage done by the metal in her blood and bones. Which meant that the serum had taken over her healing and everything was progressing. Miss M. had brought her breakfast, which Aubrey now took interest in ordering, today was donuts from a local place that Tony had claimed deserved some kind of award for their food. And, she had to admit it looked professional for a donut from such a little place. She had ordered several different donuts as it had been too hard to pick just one...and she was hungry. Starting with the chocolate peanut butter, Aubrey bit into it and was immediately blasted into flavor heaven. It had chocolate and peanut butter drizzle on top with teeny tiny chocolate chips and a chocolate mocha sauce to dip it in. It only went up from there, she tried the S'mores and found it was very similar to the first one except the peanut butter was replaced by marshmallow and graham cracker crumbs, she also found that the inside was oozing marshmallow cream. She spent an hour tasting her breakfast and rating the donuts so she could compare her thoughts with Tony's. Just after Miss. M had helped her change into new clothes Tony came barging in, a triumphant, rare, smile on his face. But he stopped dead when he saw the donut box.

"You got Dapper Donuts and didn't even get me one?" he mocked horror and picked up the box, searching inside for the donut that wasn't there. "I can't believe you've done this," he said, sadly shaking his head before turning to Aubrey and raising an eyebrow. "How were they?"

"Amazing, they definitely deserve an award or something." she agreed, leaning forward and putting her elbows on her knees.

Tony nodded and grinned "I told you so, and I'm always right so I don't even know why you doubted me." Miss. M came up behind him.

"I don't believe there's enough room in here for me with your ego taking up all the space." Miss. M sidled up beside Aubrey and leaned her neck to the right, cleaning the injection spot just beside Aubrey's shoulder blade.

"I'll have you know-" Tony started "- As it's Aubrey's last injection, I did think to get her a cake but then I realized she didn't get me a donut so I ate it myself."

Aubrey couldn't help but chuckle behind her hand, somehow Tony always figured out how to divert attention back onto himself. He frowned at her laughing but was laughing under his breath for several moments before turning back to what was at hand. He plucked a case from one of his suit pockets and opened it with flourish.

"I present your final life-saving injection, engineered by yours truly" he winked for good measure and Aubrey shook her head before leaning her neck to the side again and holding her breath as the needle poked into her flesh. The Nano's burned slightly but it was nothing compared to the first several weeks of recovery. Instead, this burning felt almost...good. It made Aubrey feel whole and powerful again, she felt the Nano's respond to her every emotion as they connected to their commander and linked to her brain. They hummed in her veins and she felt their power as Tony pushed the last of them in. She felt...complete...like this was what she had lost all those years ago and it had just been returned to her. Dizziness overwhelmed her and she lay back onto the mound of pillows behind her. She had been allowed to return to her room last week and had been grateful for the familiar place to rest.

"How do you feel Aubrey?" Miss M. asked as Aubrey ran a hand down her face and puffed a breath out of her lips.

"I...can't describe it. It's like something has been missing for a long time and...now it's not." She peeked through her fingers and saw Miss. M watching her, pride and joy shining in the older woman's eyes. Tony stood just beside her and a grin lit his face.

"Now we get to the fun stuff." and Aubrey's hands left her face as her eyebrows scrunched up.

"Fun..stuff? What do you mean?"

"Well...you're working on moving again and all that-" he waved his hand around "-but now we get to figure out how to control all those Nano's in your body."

"So...wings?" Aubrey finished hopefully, excitement welling up inside of her.

"Wings" He finalized, watching as her face contorted into one of happiness, he hadn't realized how much she had missed flying until now and started looking forward to the day that he could see his friend walk out of the building free on her own two feet.

That night, Aubrey's dreams were haunted with mind-controlled soldiers and invisible Eagles, they would reappear just before their talons sunk into her flesh. She woke with a barely contained scream as she jerked up into a sitting position, pushing her palms onto her eye-lids. But the darkness her closed eyes created was too much, her eyes shot open as Aubrey mentally cataloged everything in her room, reassuring herself that everything was in its place. It was then she realized that she had gone invisible, the power had been elusive during her sickness but had apparently decided to show back up at that moment. She took slow deep breathes, watching as her hands reappeared first, traveling up her arms until she was visible again.

"My name is Aubrey, I am the Eagle but I'm also me. I'm at the Avengers facility, one of the safest places on earth," she whispered quietly, using the words to ground herself as the nightmare flashed in her mind. She attempted to visualize her family but her mind kept drifting. Aubrey pulled herself out of bed and into her wheelchair, grabbing her robe and sliding it on before wheeling to the therapy room. At first, she just used the machines that stretched her muscles, preparing them for walking again but her eyes drifted to the parallel bars and behind them, the elliptical that had straps for your thighs and calves. The responsible part of her brain screamed for her to stop the thoughts pouring into her head but, as usual, she ignored that part of her brain and wheeled over to the parallel bars. She had only been allowed to use them several times but someone had always been there, waiting to catch her if she fell. But she was tired of waiting and always having to rely on other people's schedules. Aubrey gripped the bars and breathed deeply, pulling herself up with the exhale. Her legs trembled beneath the weight and her knees ached but Aubrey ignored it as she swung a foot forward, shuffling the next after it. She puffed a breath out of her lips, getting used to feeling the weight on her feet again, she focused on chanting.

"One foot and then the other" She walked all the way to the end of the parallel bars, cautiously she turned around, only for a sharp pain to flare up her left calf. Aubrey cried out, falling forward and just barely catching herself. Her arms shook as she slowed her breathing, positioning herself on the floor with her legs crisscrossed. Pain continued to shoot up her calf and Aubrey massaged it gently with her hands, wincing.

"Are you alright Ms. Cristo?" F.R.I.D.A.Y's voice made her jump and she stared up at the ceiling.

"I...guess."

"Short bursts are best Ms. Cristo, don't overwork your muscles too quickly," F.R.I.D.A.Y warned, compassion in her voice. Aubrey sighed and used her arms to get back to the wheelchair, pulling herself up into it before puffing a breath out of her lips. The wheel back to her room was silent and Aubrey watched the sun lift above the horizon from her bedroom floor-to-ceiling windows.
