Chapter 11
#$%^&^&*^&^%%
After going over the plan more, Scott told them that Parrish had taken three cell phone jammers from the station. He thought he could broaden their range of frequency. It was a long shot, but it was the best they've got.
Scott relunctently let slip he was benching Kira for this plan. They couldn't trust her powers not to overload again and ruin what little of a plan they had. It was in Hayden's best interest she wasn't there. Laci knew her brother understood that, but it still hurt him to bench his girlfriend and admit he didn't trust her.
Stiles and Laci were currently on their way to pick up Theo. As much as neither of them trusted him, especially after last night, they knew they'd need the help. Stiles led her into the back entrance, taking Theo by surprise. "What's going on?" He asked, looking between them as Stiles brushed by him.
"Who's ever stealing the bodies probably isn't going to do it while we're standing guard over it." He said as he hurried over to the x-ray machine.
"So you've got a better idea?"
Looking between the x-ray machine and the corpse, an idea suddenly came to him. He pulled out his phone and hooked it up on top of the machine. Once he was sure it was not only was blended in, but it wasn't going to fall, he motioned them to follow him back out. "Come on." He said, grabbing Laci's hand as he pushed past Theo again and went back outside.
Once they got to his jeep, he hooked up the other end of the camera to his dash board. Laci noticed it was at the perfect angle to get the body. If anyone tried to take it, they'd know.
"What happens now?" Theo asked as he helped Laci into the back seat of the jeep.
"We wait." Stile said, adjusting the camera one last time before sitting back.
Laci could tell this was going to be a long night, and she, for one, was not looking forward to it. The only reason she was here and not at the school, was because Scott benched her too. He didn't want her to get hurt again. As much as she knew he was just being overprotective, she couldn't just sit on the sidelines. So, keeping an eye on Stiles and Theo was the next best thing.
"Are we taking shifts watching or is it an all for one kind of thing? I, for one, have not had a good night's sleep in a . . ." She paused as she looked between them, ". . . I'm getting first watch, aren't I?"
Stiles shook his head. He hadn't been excited about her joining them, but she already knew more than she should and there not point in hiding anything now. "No, no . . . I want to spend some quality time with Theo here. We'll take first watch, Lace." He said, twisting his head to catch her eye for a quick second before glancing at Theo.
"Sounds good to me." Theo said, his eyes flickering to Laci.
She knew Stiles was suspicious of Theo day one, and last night's murder and blackmail wasn't doing Theo any favors. He was no longer the boy she met in the nurses office. There was something about him that just wasn't . . . right. She wanted to know what that was just as much as Stiles. "If I thought you were being genuine, I'd be fine with that too. Seeing as I don't, because I know you're not, I think I'll join in on this bonding time." She said, shooting him a look to chill out.
He ignored her, of course.
"You still wondering why I haven't said anything to Scott?" Theo asked.
"Maybe."
Theo looked between them. He could see neither of them trusted him, and he needed to change that. He knew getting them to trust him was his way in to getting Scott to let him into the pack. "You think I've got some kind of ultierer motive? You think so too, Lace?" He asked, his eyes flickering between them again.
"Maybe." She said, echoing Stiles' earlier statement.
"More than likely." Stiles corrected.
Theo knew this wasn't going to be easy. For some reason Stiles just had it out for him since he got to town, not that he blamed him, but it was inconvient for him. He knew if he managed to get both Scott and Stiles on his side, Laci would trust him too. "Would you two believe me if I said all I want . . . all I've ever wanted is for you guys to trust me?" He said honestly.
"Nope." Stiles said with no hesitation.
"Stiles." Laci scolded him.
Stiles eyes widened in surprised, not knowing why she was scolding him. He was just being honest with Theo. "What? I don't believe him." He said, shooting a suspicious look to the boy in question.
"So you're here because you're never going to trust me?" Theo asked.
"Yep. Glad we had this talk."
Theo had to go at this differently, he realized. "You know who you remind me of?"
"A certain sourwolf we know." Laci muttered under her breath, earning a scowl from Stiles.
"Theo, I don't care."
"My sister." Theo told him anyway.
He knew Stiles and Laci would empathize with the story. They'd both connect with it, and feel sorry for him. "She was smarter than everyone too, and a pain in the ass like you, but she always looked out for me. The same way you look out for Scott. The way you look out for her too." He started to say, looking out the window as the emotions hit him. "You know, I was the one who found her body. She'd fallen into the creek, broken a leg." He paused, swallowing down the sadness. Laci reached forward and squeezed his arm. "They told us she would have been okay if it wasn't one of the coldest night's of the year. If it wasn't for the hypothermia. And when I found her, all I could think was I should've known. That I should've been looking out for her."
Stiles's eyes immediately moved to Laci, guilt screaming in his eyes. It was his fault she'd died that night, and he'd always blame himself for it. He hadn't been strong enough. He didn't fight enough for control. He let those things attack his friends, kill not only Laci but Allison and Aiden. Scott lost not only the love of his life, but his twin. His other half. He hadn't been looking out for her that night, and he'd always regret that. He knew Scott did too.
"Why are you telling me this?" He said, his voice cracking as he fought back tears.
Hook. Line. Sinker.
"I'm telling you, because even if you don't trust me and even if you don't like me, I'm still going to be looking out for you . . . the way I should have been looking out for her." Theo said, placing his hand over Laci's, giving her a grateful smile.
Looking between them, he knew he'd won Stiles and Laci over.
"You know, I saw his teeth." Stiles and Laci both looked at him confused. "Donovan." He clarified.
Five hours had passed and still nothing. Laci was beginning to regret deciding to stay up with the boys. Either the car was silent, or Stiles was interigating Theo some more. When Theo couldn't take the silence any longer, he cleared his throat and straightened in his seat. "He was a, uh . . . Wendigo, wasn't he?" He asked, not quite sure.
"Yeah."
"That's the cannibal one, right?" Laci asked, looking between them.
Stiles glanced back for a moment before shaking his head. With a quick look to Theo, he could see he was curious as well. "Native American. The myth says that if you ate human flesh, your punishment was to turn into a creature that constintly craved it." He explained to the two of them.
Theo leaned back in his seat, wishing he could really stretch out. "That's a pretty judgemental myth."
"More like disgusting." Laci scoffed, her nose scrunching up in disgust.
"Well, I didn't make it up." He said, shooting a look to the girl sitting behind him.
Laci stuck her tongue out at him in return. Theo seemed to be lost in thought about something else entirely. "What if it was the only way to survive?" He asked, glancing over to Stiles. "I mean, did you ever hear of the Donner party? I'm pretty sure they didn't turn into Wendigos."
"Well, they didn't live in Beacon Hills." He pointed out.
"Good point."
Theo leaned back in his sleep, crossing his arms. "So what's the punishment for killing a chimera?"
Stiles scoffed, grinning as he shared a look with Theo. "You spend five hours in a car with Theo Raeken." He teased before getting serious. "Like I know what my punishment is." He went on, pausing as he took a heavy breath. "I'm gonna lose one of my best friends. I'm gonna lose Scott."
"Stiles, you're not." Laci said, squeezing his arm.
"You know I am." He said sharply as he shot her a look, pulling free of her hold on him.
Theo shook his head, not believing it anymore than Laci did. "If Scott was really gave up on you for some piece of crap like Donovan, then he wouldn't be a true alpha, would he?"
"Or maybe that's the definition of one, someone who doesn't put up with murder." Stiles said, getting stuck in his head.
He wasn't seeing what was true. Scott and Stiles had been through some tough things and had always had each other. It seemed silly that now, when Stiles needed him the most, would be when Scott turns his back on him. "Stiles, he's your brother. He wouldn't turn his back on you. Not for anything." Laci said, wishing he'd listen to her.
"He would if it meant saving you." He blurted out, his fears coming to light.
Stiles knew Scott regretted saving him the moment he saw that sword piece his sister's chest. They all knew it. It was his twin, his other half. A part of Scott died with her that night, and it was the part that trusted Stiles. Laci didn't know what to say to that, only confirming what he already knew to be true.
"It sounds like you guys need to look up justifible homicide." Theo said, changing the subject back.
"Did you just seriously say that to a son of a cop?" Stiles scoffed, clearly offended.
Theo sighed, knowing this wasn't getting them anywhere. He needed to get through to Stiles and he knew just the way to do it. "A werewolf's eyes are supposed to change color when you take an innocent's life." Theo said as he changed his eyes to the familiar golden color. "Do these look blue to you?" He said, his eyes changing back to their normal color now. "It was self defence. For me, and for you."
Stiles still wasn't convinced.
"Or maybe you just don't feel all that bad about it. You can't say one life is objectively less innocent than another one. What if they turn blue because you feel guilty?" He pointed out.
"So it's up to interpation?"
"Yeah, maybe." He said with a shrug.
"Okay. Then here's my interpertation of what happened with you and Donovan. Not guilty." Theo went on, trying to get through to him. When he saw that it was starting to, he kept on pushing. "Did you feel bad about it? Not now. I mean right then. Right when it happened. What were you thinking the moment he was dead and there was no saving him?
"One word . . . good."
Laci looked between Theo and Stiles surprised before she realized Theo was smirking. That was odd, she thought to herself. It was like he was getting exactly what he wanted from this confession session. She straightened when she noticed him tense up, sniffing the air. "Theo? What is it?" She asked, looking around for anything out of the ordinairy.
"A scent." He said, confused. "Like smoke. Like something's burning."
Laci let out a scream as a flaming fist came through the window and punched Theo. Blood splattered into Stiles face. Laci flew back in surprise, her face in shock as Theo was ripped from the jeep. The moment of silence only last a moment before the jeep was lifted from behind and tossed over onto it's back. Laci screamed as she tumbled around, hitting her head off the window. The world went dark as she fell back into the hard surface of the hood of the car.
Flames errupted around the jeep, both Laci and Stiles were out cold inside of it. Theo was nowhere to be seen. Laci could feel the flames licking her face, but she couldn't find the strength in herself to just open her eyes. She could vaguely hear Stiles' calling her name, and she so badly wanted to yell back that she was okay. Reaching out her hand was a strain, but it was the most she could do. "Sti-Stiles," She rasped out, coughing.
A pair of boots came into her blurry line of eyesight. It had to be Theo. A cry left her lips as she pulled her body forward. Nothing felt broken, but she was stuck. Her foot had gotten wedged in between the middle consol and the passenger seat. The boots disappeared as the man leaned inside the jeep, their face too blurred to make out still. "Don't worry, Laci. I've got you. I've got you." He said as he carefully picked her up from the ground.
Another cry left her lips as he pulled her foot free before tugging her out. As the fresh air hit her, she found it hard to breathe. Her coughing was muffled into the man's neck. She did her best to keep breathing in. He smelled familiar. He felt safe. She knew him, she just couldn't put the face to the voice. Her immediate thought went to Derek, but it didn't feel right. No, it wasn't Derek. Laci lifted her head, the dark curls starting to come into focus now. She knew that messy head of hair anyway.
It was Isaac.
