Chapter 19
#$%^%&*%
While Scott and Stiles went on the search for Kira. They left the night before after a quick run in with Liam in their living room. Laci had stayed upstairs while Scott and Liam talked. She almost felt bad for Liam. If he hadn't have tried to kill her brother, she might have actually felt bad for him. He didn't get her pity after what he did, supermoon or not.
Laci decided to stay behind and focus on her schooling, or rather, Isaac's schooling. She knew Isaac was struggling with his make up work and could use some help. The two were walking down the hall going over their chemistry notes. She knew Isaac was worried about the up coming test and the least she could do was help him since he'd been helping her with training.
Isaac looked over her shoulder, reading the part she was telling him about. She had highlighted the important parts for him. For that he was grateful. "I know it sounds like gibberish, but it's really not that hard, Isaac. We can do a practice test at home if you want." She said, glancing over to see a confused look on his face.
Anything science related was never Isaac's friend, Laci knew that. He'd always had a problem with the subject, and she didn't want it to be the reason he didn't graduate. Isaac, on the other hand, could care less about the class. He was just doing all of this because he knew it was important to her that he pass. "Yeah, alright. How about over burgers? That diner's still around. The one we used to go to all the time." He said, risking a glance to see her reaction.
He knew it was a bold move, but it felt right. Hanging out with her these past few days felt like old times and he missed that. He missed her.
Laci was about to nod when she saw the look in his eyes and realized just what he was asking. "Oh, uh, like a date?"
Isaac cleared his throat, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. He felt like it was the first time he was asking her out all over again. "Well, sure. I mean, why not?"
Laci looked conflicted. On one hand, she wanted to say yes, but on the other she knew she couldn't. It wouldn't be fair to Isaac. She wasn't where he was, and it'd be mean to let him think she was. "Isaac, I . . . I don't know. It's too soon for me. I'm sorry." She said, guilt flashing across her face when she saw the look of disappointment on his.
An awkwardness fell over them as they paused by her locker. Isaac cleared his throat again, adjusting his books. "No, uh, I get it. You're not ready yet. I shouldn't have asked."
Laci hesitated before touching his arm. "I'd still be up for a burger if you're interested. As friends."
Isaac looked surprised before nodding. He was about to say something else when static came over the loud speaker. Both of them winced at the noise. "Attention all students. Mr. O'Quinn's classes are canceled for today. If anyone knows his whereabouts, please let the office know immediately." The voice said over the loud speaker.
Isaac could still hear the ringing in his ears even after the announcement was over. He was about to make a remark when he noticed Laci wasn't looking at him. He followed her eyes to see she was glaring at Liam. "I could kick his ass for you." He said as if it was the most innocent of remarks.
She would have laughed if she didn't know he was serious. She had no doubt he'd do just that if she asked him to. Unfortuately, Scott had already warned her to play nice with Liam. It wasn't totally his fault, and he probably felt guilty enough without needing a black eye. "Easy, wolfie." She said, patting his chest. "As much as I'd enjoy that, Scott told me to give him a break. It was a supermoon, Theo used him like he used the rest of us. Blah blah blah." She said, rolling her eyes as she switched out her books for different ones.
Isaac spared a glance at Liam and his friend to see Liam looking in their direction. He'd heard what Laci said no doubt. Isaac raised a brow at him, as if daring him to come over and say something. Liam looked like he wanted to take that challenge, but his friend grabbed his arm, telling him to let it go. He watched as something else seemed to catch the beta's eye. Isaac followed his glare to see Theo talking to some girl.
Anger coursed through him at the sight of the werewolf. He wouldn't mind kicking his ass, and he was sure Scott wouldn't mind either. Isaac was so caught up in his thoughts he didn't realize Laci had been talking until she touched his arm. He looked startled, his eyes shifting to her. "Hey, he's not worth it either. Just walk me to class, Isaac." She said calmly, making sure his eyes stayed on her.
Isaac seemed to hesitate, but eventually nodded. As much as he didn't like that Theo was here, he knew she was right. He wasn't worth him getting into trouble. Neither of the werewolves were worth that. Smiling with relief, she nodded and closed her locker. Isaac adjusted his bag strap as he followed her to her next class.

Unfortunately for Isaac, he could get all of his schedule to match Laci's. Though he tried. Laci was going solo for her next class. Unfortunately for her, Theo was in this class too. With Stiles and Scott gone, it left her alone. Isaac hadn't been happy about that, and to make it worse Theo had made a show of sitting beside Laci. "Has anyone seen Stiles or Scott McCall? Laci, I don't suppose you know where your brother is." Their teacher said as she passed out the tests.
"Sick, Miss." Laci lied.
She didn't seem to believe her. "Can't be the only one who thinks it's slightly coincidental they're both sick on the same day." She said as she continued on down the row of students. "And Lydia Martin wasn't in class today either."
"She won't be in for a while." Theo blurted out. Laci's eyes turned to him, narrowing into a glare. Everyone else turned to him confused. He looked up, realizing his mistake. "Medical issues."
Laci tensed up, gripping her pencil. Lydia wouldn't be in Eichen house right now if it wasn't for Theo in the first place. Scoffing, she turned her attention to her paper. She didn't notice Malia standing outside the classroom, but Theo did.
A few minutes went by before she heard Theo trying to get her attention. She tried to ignore him at first, but he didn't seem to want to take no for an answer. "I know you want to know more about your powers." He whispered over.
She tensed, going ridged in her seat. Of course she wanted to know more about her powers, but she didn't want to be Theo's puppet again. She wouldn't be turned against her brother like he'd done to Stiles and Scott. "Leave me alone, Theo." She whispered back.
He grinned, as if he'd gotten exactly what he wanted. "The doctors didn't give you them, if that's what you're wondering. They only amplified what you already had. I wanted a seer in my pack, like Lydia can be for Scott only without the screaming." He whispered, explaining what his thoughts were when he brought her back.
Laci didn't know what to say. She didn't remember having any powers before she came back from the dead. He had to be lying. She knew he liked messing with people's heads. She finally turned to glance at him. "I will never be in your pack, Theo." She whispered as she glared at him.
The smirk never left his face.

When the class was over, it wasn't Isaac waiting for her outside of the classroom, but it was Liam instead. She paused in the doorway, surprised to see him standing there. He cleared his throat, shifting around his bag. "Can we talk?" He asked, looking around awkwardly.
Laci didn't know what to say. She didn't even know why Liam wanted to talk to her. It wasn't her he tried to kill the other night. It was her brother. "Do we have to?" She asked, her voice bitter as she moved by him.
He hurried to follow her. "I wanted to apologize to you when your guard dog wasn't around."
Laci actually had to laugh at that. Isaac had a tendency to be a bit too protective over her, especially recently since she came back to life. "I'm not the McCall you need to apologize to, Liam." She said, glancing back to see he was still following her.
"I wanted to ask you something too." He said before he lost his nerve.
She hesitated, not sure she wanted to keep this conversation going. If he was about to ask her for a favor concerning her brother, she wasn't sure what she'd do. "Depends on what it is." She said, pausing at the stairs as she turned to face him.
Liam looked nervous, like he didn't know how to word his question just yet. "When you came back, did you, um . . . was there something off? Were there side effects?" He asked, taking her by surprise.
She was not expecting that question.
She wasn't even sure how to answer that. It was a tough question. She remembered when Allison, Stiles, and Scott came back from the dead and what happened with them. The nightmares, hallucinations, it was awful for them. Thankfully, her ressurrection was different. While she wasn't perfectly fine, at least she wasn't seeing things. Well . . . kind of.
She could see he genuinely wanted to know. He was curious about it because of his girlfriend's traumatic experience with death. "My body was dead a lot longer than Hayden's was. I lost a lot of muscle tone and I have to work hard to keep up. I lost a lot of time. Sometimes it messes with my head. A year seems like weeks for me. I lost a part of me that night. I came back, but it feels like I'm missing something. I don't think I'll ever get it back, I don't think she will either." She answered honestly.
Liam looked a lost for words for a long few minutes. He hadn't realized how bad it was for Laci since coming back. He thought her life just went on like before. He was about to say something when Isaac cleared his throat. Laci look startled before smiling weakly. "You got her back, Liam. Be grateful for that. Not everyone's that lucky." She said, squeezing his hand before heading down the stairs to meet Isaac.
Her mind went to Allison. She wondered what would have happened if Allison was brought back instead of her. Theo just as easily could have picked her instead to have the dread doctors bring back. She wondered how different things would be if it was Allison here instead of her. They probably would have figured out Theo's plan quicker, or be one step closer to figuring out what was going on with this new monster.
"Hey, how about we skip French and go get that burger?" Isaac said, nudging her arm.
She knew she should say no, but a distraction wouldn't hurt either. She knew Isaac was only suggesting it to get her mind off everything else. He'd heard what she had said to Liam and felt guilty. Regardless, a burger sounded great right about then.
"Sure."
#$$%^$^&&%^
It didn't take long for them to get to the diner. It was a familiar place for them to visit, though it had been almost two years since they last came. Isaac led her to a table, motioning for her to sit first. She slid into the booth while he sat across from her. "I didn't realize how badly I was craving a burger from here until we got here." Laci laughed as she looked over the menu.
Not much had changed, and she liked that. It was one of the few things that was still the same as it was before her death. She needed that. Her world was constantly spinning as she tried to keep up with all the changes going on around her. Allison was dead, Kira and Scott were together, Derek was gone, there were just so many changes and she wasn't sure how many more her head could handle.
"Yeah, I'd definitely take a burger from here over some of that stuff they make in France. You know people actually eat snails?" He said as he looked over the menu.
She laughed watching him make a disgusted expression. He grinned when he heard her giggle, happy over the fact he'd made her laugh. It wasn't something he got to hear often from her lately and it was welcomed noise. He was sure anyone else would agree. "What are you looking at?" She asked, blushing as she pushed her hair behind her ear.
"It's just nice to hear you laugh." He said, his eyes watching her.
Her blush darkened, her eyes shifting away from him. "Isaac,"
His grin fell from her tone. He knew he was pushing it after she'd already told him she wanted to be just friends for now, but he couldn't help it. It was just so easy to slip into that way with her. He doesn't regret making her laugh, and he definitely doesn't regret making her blush. "It is. You used to laugh all the time. I think I can count on my fingers how many times you've laughed since I've been back." He said, looking over to meet her gaze.
"There hasn't been much to laugh about, I guess." She said, giving him a sad smile.
He nodded his head in agreement. Silence fell over them for a few moments before they ordered their food. He cleared his throat again, lifting his eyes to meet her's. "How was your last class? Did Theo say anything to you?" He asked, changing the subject.
She tensed at the mention of Theo. She opened her mouth to speak, but paused when the waitress came over with their food. With a quick thank you, she lowered her voice. "He mentioned my powers. He said they didn't give me them, but I had them before. They just made them stronger. It doesn't make sense. I never had powers before I died."
Isaac took a sip of his drink before shaking his head. "So you think he was lying?"
Laci nodded as she took a bite of her food. Once she finished chewing, she looked up from her food. "I do. I don't want Scott to know he said anything though. If Theo's just playing more mind games, I don't want to get Scott involved." She said, giving him a look to listen.
He looked like he wanted to argue with her, but sighed as he nodded. The two fell into another silence as they ate their food. It was another few minutes before Isaac pulled out his chemistry book and his notebook. "So about that practice test." He said, giving her a grin.
She looked surprised for a moment before smiling and taking out her own. They spent the rest of lunch going over questions she knew would be on the test and he tried his best to answer them. It was like a normal afternoon and she was grateful for it.
It was exactly what she needed.
