A/N* Hello all! I'm still alive, I promise. I apologize for not getting this chapter to you guys sooner. I had to wait for the DVD *cough* Spiderman Far From Home *cough* to come in at the library before I could write it. I've also been inundated with long strenuous essays that need to be written, and unfortunately those come first.
But I got this chapter written!
My sincere hope is that I'll have another one ready next weekend but I'm not completely sure. I'll do my best though. Thank you for your patience
Happy Reading!
The suitcase wheels squeaked as Aubrey pulled it behind her, duffel slung over her shoulder. The hotel's carpet made it harder to pull the suitcase along. Her mind swirled with questions as she stepped into the elevator and pushed the button for the first floor. Jazz music played in the background as it clicked closed. A few moments later it dinged and the doors slid open.
"Aunty Brie!" A little person dressed in pink barreled into her legs, hugging her tightly.
"Squirt, what are you doing here?" Hoisting Morgan onto her hip, Aubrey hugged her close as Pepper came up and took the duffel bag.
"We couldn't let you go without saying goodbye-" Pepper murmured, "- no matter how badly the security guards don't want to let us in."
"Thank you" she tried to keep her voice from shaking as another wave of sadness rolled over her. Bags layered under Pepper's eyes and Aubrey could see the pain in her eyes.
"Of course Aubrey. Now, you're going to take care of yourself, right? Keep a phone on you, check in with us. Don't leave us hanging. And-" lowering her voice, Pepper continued "- we might be able to get messages between you and him"
"I will take care of myself but you aren't allowed to risk anything for me" gently, she set Morgan on the ground as they came to the door.
"You'll come visit, right Aunty Brie?" the girl asked. Aubrey nodded, heart pinging as the slight-lie slid off of her tongue.
"One more thing-" Pepper's voice was soft as she continued "- You're going to Venice, Italy, right?"
"Mhm, then Paris. I guess they want me to see the world" She couldn't keep the sarcasm out of her voice.
"Okay..Okay. So...I really hate to bring this up, but you remember Spiderman, right? Peter Parker?"
"Yeah?" Curiosity nipped at her mind as she listened to Pepper talk.
"He's in Venice, and then Paris too...On the off chance that you see him...just introduce yourself, say hi. He really needs it right now….he and Tony where….close" Pain laced her words and Aubrey immediately nodded, anything to make it easier for them, for everyone.
"Thank you" They all exchanged one last hug before Aubrey was whisked away to a waiting plane.
The plane ride passed by in a blur and it didn't take long for her to find the small hotel she'd been registered in. An armed guard trailed her the whole way. The room that she'd rented was small. The couch folded out into a bed and it faintly reminded her of the days when she and Bucky were on the run. It had a certain mildew smell that made you wonder how old it was. The furniture was tattered and wobbly but it did the job. She didn't mind living this way. The view was worth it. Out the large windows was a circular bay that split off into canals, shops were littered around the cobbled streets and people were always out and flitting around.
The first few days were calm enough, the guard flashed in her peripheral occasionally but Aubrey mostly stayed to herself. Pulling her hair back into a ponytail, Aubrey readjusted the blinking band on her ankle. It was thin and smooth but did the job it was supposed to. A slight breeze teased it's way through the open windows and swirled around the room. Picking up stray papers and giving them a ride through the air before settling them onto the ground. Her pen scratched against the paper in her journal. Aubrey had kept a careful track of everything that had happened the last couple of weeks, in case she found herself forgetting. Memory episodes had returned after Tony had...gone. Most of them had to do with him and her counselor had assured her it was probably just part of the grieving process.
A sudden rumble brought her out of her thoughts. The seagulls outside seemed especially agitated. Most likely one of the vendors had tried shooing them off and knocked something over.
It was the screaming that brought panic to her chest. The earth shook with a mighty force as terrified yells floated up through her window. Bolting up off of the couch, Aubrey peered outside to find a horrifying sight.
A beast made of water rose from the bay, shrieking before knocking a hand into one of the buildings across the bay.
She'd promised that the hero work was over.
But she knew the right thing to do. Within seconds, Aubrey had rushed from the hotel room and into the street. Water poured from buildings and into the cobbled walkways. Her keen eyes scanned the area as everyone fled. Chaos rose up around her.
A lone figure bounced across the bay, using poles and boats to get across. She couldn't get a look at his face but Aubrey knew it was him. The beast screeched at him, sending waves of the clear liquid at him before punching the walkway into pieces. Peter Parker was thrown against the wall. Aubrey wove through side and back streets, headed towards the boy she had only met face-to-face with at Tony's funeral. She made it to his side in time for green to flash in her peripheral. Peter Parker was drenched head-to-toe and a dazed look flashed across his face before he noticed her.
"It just...I...How" all the questions came out of him at once. Shaking her head, Aubrey grabbed ahold of his arm. They both cast a glance backward as a figure flew through the sky, green mist flying behind him. The figure had a...fishbowl.. For a head. He flew through the air, using some sort of emerald-colored energy to combat the beast. And it seemed to be working. It sank backward into the water, growling with fury.
Before launching into the air and throwing the mysterious figure backward into the bay. Tentacle-like arms rose around the beast as the figure shot out of the water.
"We've gotta help him" Aubrey murmured under her breath, watching as Peter Parker shot her another surprised look before grabbing a wash-out mask off of the ground.
"How are you here?"
"Long story"
He gave her a brisk nod before darting into an alleyway and scaling the side of a building. Aubrey followed, shuddering as the wings formed at her back, enabling her to hover beside Spidey.
"Excuse us sir, we can help! We're really strong and can help. What can we do?" He squeaked at the fishbowl-man.
"I need you to lead it away from the canals" he responded, voice sounding slightly echoed.
"I'll do damage control, try to keep buildings together." Spiderman murmured to Aubrey. She gave a brisk nod before darting away, following the man. He'd already begun taking the beast down a canal, weaving through arches and bridges. The beast was not as kind to go around, it destroyed everything in its path. She followed, unsure how to help him. She didn't have webs like Spidey and metal weapons would do nothing to combat it. The clocktower rose above them and as the beast grabbed for it, cracks began to split it into two. She watched Spiderman wrap it into a cocoon of webs. But it still continued to wobble and a second blast of water sent it tipping. Jets pulsing, Aubrey flew forward, eyes trained on Spidey He shot two webs, one at a building on either side of the tower. The weight began pulling him backward and he slid into the bell, head hitting it. She made it there just in time for him to be pulled towards the edge. The decorative columns holding up the bell began to crumble as she grabbed ahold of his torso, flapping backwards. It gave him a moment to recover and Spiderman shot another two webs at different buildings. Aubrey maneuvered them over to the thickest column and tentatively let go as he gained his footing.
"How can I help?" she puffed, watching as the man conjured a twisting triangle in the sky, it vomited green fog, twirling around the beast and sucking it in. The tower groaned, bringing her back to the present.
"Can...you...push from...the other side?-" he groaned. "- There are webs ont hat side keeping it from crumbling." She gave him a curt nod before gliding to the side of the tower. It was feet from the water. Carefully, she leaned her hands and chest into it, jets pushing at full power and wings flapping furiously. It must've weighed thousands of tons. The tower groaned and squealed in response to her efforts. Something crashed behind her and Aubrey felt the forceful reverberation before she realized it was happening. The tower shuddered before falling around her. Jagged pieces of rock scraped her bare arms and she was just able to slide out of the way before the rest of the monument landed with a thud on the ground. Sagging against a wall, Aubrey sucked in a breath before scanning the soaked streets. The man had landed, waving to nearby civilians before saluting to her and someone else. Most likely Spidey. And then, with a puff of smoke, he was gone.
She heard Peter Parker before he came around the corner, a dumbfounded look on his face.
"I'm so confused"
"That makes two of us kid-" Aubrey brokenly chuckled "-seems like us hero-types never get a break, huh?"
"How….Why are you here?...Who was that guy? What just happened. Are you okay? Cause there's a lot of scratches on your arms.-" his mouth opened to say more but she cut in before he could continue.
"I'm here because the United States Government wanted me out of the way..although it appears they've just put me in the way of more trouble. I don't know what just happened or who that was. And I'm fine. I would wear my suit but it's housed in bracelets, in my hotel room and in the moment I guess I forgot to put them on...Plus I'm not really supposed to have them...but I'm sure I'll get into trouble with my guard for even participating in this….as for knowing that you were here...Pepper asked me to keep an eye out..I didn't know trouble followed you around to closely-" She tried to turn the last sentence into a joke but it still felt somewhat serious. He did crack a small smile before turning serious again "-Are you okay?"
"Yeah..Ummm I'm okay. That was really scary and I should probably go find my class but...I feel like I should give you a way to contact me or something.-"
"Phone number?-" she raised a brow and he nodded, reciting the numbers. "-Okay, I'll be in touch if I'm not whisked away to prison." he gave her a grin before disappearing around a corner, leaving Aubrey with her thoughts.
The name Mysterio was all over the news that night.
Aubrey came back to her apartment drenched, anxious, and sore. But every thought in her mind vanished at the note on the dining room table.
