A firm knocking sound shuddered the door to her apartment as Aubrey pushed off of the armchair she had settled into earlier that morning. She'd spent the morning writing in her journal and making sure things were packed in case Fury had meant what he said...and he usually did. The lock groaned with resistance as she peered through the door, and at...herself.
A carbon copy of herself stared back at Aubrey, a smirk playing on her lips.
"Yes, yes, I look like you. Congratulations, you have eyes. Now let me in and let's get on with this.-" the woman pushed her way into the room, closing the door behind her. Aubrey stayed in place, shock still working its way through her. "Here's how this is going to work. I'm going to be you, I've been given a rundown on your life and history and everything so don't worry about that. Grab your stuff and go back down to the lobby. There is a rusty brown bus outside, you'll be taking that with the child's class.-"
"What?-" the worlds startled her out of her stupor and Aubrey slung her duffle onto her shoulder. "-Why can't I just-"
"Fly? I was told you were smart but apparently, I have to spell things out for you-" the woman huffed, twirling a strand of ash-blond hair around her finger. "-no one can see you flying, and this is the best way to keep you and little Spidey together. So have fun with that and be gone." she flicked her hand dismissively
And that was how Aubrey got stuck on a bus full of teenagers, stuck next to someone who could very possibly be the most annoying person on the planet.
Well, she wasn't right next to him. Aubrey was seated behind the driver, who she recognized from the night before. Peter Parker's face had slacked in surprise when she saw her on the bus but he had quickly recovered. The seat across the row was occupied by a teen who must've thought all the world wanted to hear him talk about his vacation so far. On and on he had gone about what had happened the day before and where they were headed. About three sentences in, Aubrey had begun to tune him out and a wave of relief washed over her when she felt the bus slow in front of some sort of resort. She waited until everyone else filed out before standing, shaking the sleep out of each leg. Spidey nodded at her as he walked in front of her. But both were stopped by Dimitri, who nodded towards a white building, nestled in the corner of the little half-circle of shops. A picture of a pint of beer was plastered by the door but a thin woman hovered in the doorway, disappearing from view when they glimpsed her. Gravel crunched beneath her boots as Aubrey paced beside Peter, slowing her gait to match his.
"I'm surprised your teachers aren't worried about some random lady in their bus."
"I think they're just glad they get a bonus trip" he stammered as they stepped into the building. A black-clad woman with a heavily accented voice ordered Aubrey to go into the other room.
"We must dye your hair now and make you unrecognizable. The instructions are on the box, go!" she snapped as Aubrey hurried to the adjoining room. Voices sounded as she read the black hair dye box. It was extremely fast-acting and she began painting it onto her hair, unsure how to do it. A moment later the woman tromped in, clicking her tongue under her breath. "You work like a snail." tearing the brush from Aubrey's hands, she began dolloping dye into her hair before having her lean into a sink to rinse it out. "You will notice it does not work like regular dye and doesn't stick to skin. It should last you several weeks. Before you leave, you will be taking eye-color lenses and a make-up kit. Wear them all to ensure a successful mission." The whole event took five minutes and by the time they were done, Aubrey couldn't recognize herself. Her once ash-colored hair had been darkened to jet-black. Green eyes were replaced with brown and the eyeliner made it even more of a shocking transition. "Now go, before they leave you. And if anyone asks, tell them it's none of their business." The woman tucked Aubrey's hair into a beanie, leaving only a few strands out before pushing her out the door. The bus was filling up and her time was running short but she made it in time. And instead of getting stuck to the teen again, she noticed Spidey in the front seat and sat in the one across the aisle.
"Whoa, you..you changed a lot" he mumbled, slipping on a pair of glasses that reminded her of Tony. He seemed especially nervous as she nodded
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing...nothing" he repeated as everyone settled in for a long ride. Moments later, Peter jumped up from his spot, shooting a web at the steering wheel as the bus shuddered under fire. She shot him a look and he shook his head
"I did this, I can fix it." with that, he told everyone else there were mountain goats and slingshotted out the top of the bus. An explosion rocked them again as he came back down, staggering into a seat as his classmates said something.
"What was that"
"These glasses are sick" was all he said.
Aubrey shook her head before gazing back out the window, mentally preparing for whatever lay ahead.
They landed in Prague, Czech Republic sometime later and Aubrey had followed Dimitri through the hallways and closed doors to where Nick Fury and others were operating. She walked in just as Fury's words echoed through the chamber
"Tony Stark gave you a multi bullion dollar AR Tactical Intelligence system and the first thing you do is try to explode your classmates! It's clear to me that you are not ready for this!"
She felt bad for him as he stumbled past her, and out of the room, head down and shoulders hunched. At her look, Fury muttered a curse under his breath before sending Hill her way to explain the plan.
Her wings flexed as her Nano-tech suit slid out and covered her body.
"Heat signatures spiking" Hill called out. Fury shot Aubrey a glance
"Get out there Eagle"
"Yes Sir." she nodded, slipping out the door and into the streets before scaling a building and taking to the murky-colored sky. The ground below her burst into smoke and flame as the final elemental monster rose from the earth. It let loose an earth-shattering roar, rising to its feet as lava dripped from it. Aubrey rolled her shoulders, puffing a breath out of her lips.
"You're going down"
