AN: Sorry for the long hiatus, but I'm back with a new chapter! I hope you enjoy it!
Chapter 16
Revelations Beneath the Ground
When N and Hapi found where Yuri and the others were, they had already begun talking about the threat Abyss was about to face. Hapi joined into the conversation complaining that she had to fight and possibly die. N was surprised she could say something like that so calmly. He was aware that those who lived in Abyss were outcasts, but that they faced the possibility of death so frequently had not crossed his mind.
Constance arrived soon after and confirmed for Yuri that they had set up a camouflage in order to keep the intruders away from the main square and living quarters. N was impressed at how calmly the group from the Ashen Abosls acted in the situation they were in. Normally, when someone was attacking, there was a small amount of panic. However the youths in front of him did not have the slightest hint of that. They were all confident they could repel the enemy.
N found that Yuri was the one that had him the most curious. He was the leader of the group and it showed how much those around him trusted him. However, he could not shake the feeling that he knew more than he led on. He acting awfully casual about everything that was going on.
When Balthus joined the group he had a location for where the intruders were. Which Yuri was pleased about and ordered for them to draw them further into Abyss.
"You're drawing them in? What do they want with Abyss anyway?" Byleth asked.
"I'd like to know that as well. As for why we're drawing them in, we want to fight them where we have the advantage," Yuri answered.
"But you're the locals here. Wouldn't every be an advantage?" Edelgard asked.
"Counterattacking on the surface won't accomplish anything. It could also earn us the scorn of the church, if it gets messy…which it is." Yuri turned to Byleth. "That's why we're luring them underground before we take them out. I also know the perfect spot."
Balthus let out a boisterous laugh. "Admit it, pals. You're in too deep with this, just like us. No turning back now right." His Gapploct added in a bellow. Balthus chuckled and put a hand on the blue octopi's head. "Seems like Grapploct is raring to go."
"Of course not! If there's any way we can help your cause, none of us will turn our backs on you," Ashe said.
Behind him, Lindhart groaned. "Speak for yourself."
The comment earned him a stern glare from Edelgard.
Dimitri ignored Lindhart's complaint and spoke up. "That's right. We will not stand idle while danger befall the innocents of Abyss."
Edelgard put and hand on her chin and nodded in agreement. "Though, if we capture an enemy, we can perhaps learn the reason behind their relentless attacks."
"We'll help you fight to defend your home," N said. He turned to Zorua, who was perched on his shoulders. "Won't we, bud?" Zorua yipped in agreement.
"Looks like a few of you are ready to fight. I know if we work together we can repel the enemy," Constance said.
"As long as they're on our side, don't care how excited they are. Let's get to it!" Balthus said.
"We should get moving," Yuri said as he turned on his heel. "Follow me."
The group of Garreg Mach students and Abyssians followed the purple haired leader. N stayed behind for a moment. His gaze firmly on Yuri. He could sense something off about him. It reminded him of those who he had escaped from so many years ago. He tightened the grip of his fist. He wanted to shake off the bad feeling he had, but the more he let the thought stir, the more it consumed his mind.
"Hey."
N turned to see Byleth with a hand on his shoulder.
"Are you okay? You look paler than usual," Byleth said.
N could tell she was worried about him, even if her face was the usual monotone. He let out breath and let his body loosen up.
"Something just feels off about all this," N replied.
"Does it have to do with what happened in the room?" Byleth asked.
N nodded. "A bit. I can't be sure they're involved, but this has his hands written all over it."
Byleth frowned. N often used those words when referring to those he escaped from in the past. She had hoped by now he would have opened up a bit about what he experienced, but he was always vague about the events and people.
"Professors! If you don't keep up we'll leave you behind!" Ashe called out.
"Come on," N said as he shrugged her hand off his shoulder, "we should catch up."
Byleth watched for a moment as N jogged to catch up. She looked to her hand and sighed. N had easily shrugged it off. She knew something was bothering him and she wanted to help. She looked toward her Eevee, who hopped onto her shoulder.
"Let's go, Eevee."
Eevee yipped in response and Byleth joined the rest of the group.
—
"This place is ginormous!" Hilda exclaimed.
For N, that word felt like an understatement. Yuri had led them to a wide, open area that had an underground arena. Currently, they were standing in the center of the arena. N could see that lines marked a large rectangle with two smaller ones at the far ends. It was the same as where he taught his lessons, but much larger in scale.
In order to get onto the main battlefield, they had to climb stairs. In the depression that divided the seating area form the battlefield, there were the four statues of the saints. Within such a grand arena, the statues felt a bit out of place.
The audience stands looked to hold even more than the one N used for lessons. He had no doubt that even with everyone in Abyss, there would still be plenty of open space in the arena.
The arena itself was lit up by dozens of flaming bowls. From the looks of it, the fire seemed to burn without showing signs of wavering.
N was thoroughly impressed by everything.
"Wow! An underground arena, huh? You sure know some great spots, Yuri. We should use this place to train Grapploct and Absol. You could really let loose in here," Balthus said as he looked around the large area.
"I heard about this place from someone back in two. It hasn't been used in a long time. But I was told that some pretty epic battles were held here," Yuri replied.
"I'll say. Even a creature as large as Steelix could comfortably fight here." N looked to the ceiling. "Hell, I think something even larger can fight in here."
Yuri nodded in response. "I've heard rumors about creatures growing to giant size. Pretty sure this place was used for battles with such titans."
"Giant creatures…" Byleth mused.
Dimitri and Ashe had similar reactions to Yuri's words as well. It brought back memories of their experience at Red Canyon.
"We should get back to the topic at hand, Yuri," Contance said.
"Right. We shouldn't get sidetracked." Yuri cleared his throat and put on a more serious face. "I figured this place could be useful, so I spent some time clearing out debris from the entrance."
"It's like a revitalized ruin. It was clearly meant for battle between the creatures. I'm surprised it is in such good condition," Dimitri said.
"Perhaps," Edelgard mused. "Honestly, all of Abyss feels like a ruin.
Constance bellowed her usual high pitched laugh. "This place is truly magnificent! It's certainly spacious enough to contain both my and Lampent's glory! I shall not hold back here!"
"Large. Isolated. I wonder if it'll be okay for me to sigh here," Hapi said as she moved her head to look around.
"Wait a minute. Sigh?" N asked.
Balthus chuckled. "If Hapi sighs, a horde of creatures come running. Those Diglett that appeared when we first met were summoned by her."
"Even though we saw it happen, I still have know idea what you mean," Edelgard said.
Yuri sighed. "I wish, Hapi, but no. Absolutely no sighing." He turned to Constance. "Constance, be glorious, but in moderation. Understood? This place is so big that if it collapses all of Abyss will come crashing down. It's the whole reason we're down here. Don't lose sight of that."
Constance scoffed. "I am well aware of our aim."
"Sure, but that doesn't mean we can trust you to show restraint," Balthus argued.
"If it's that much of an issue, I can partner up with her in battle," N suggested.
Constance turned to N. "Please, like I need a guardian to protect me."
N rolled his eyes. "It's not that. Zorua and I can keep you from getting out of hand, should it happen."
"I cannot fathom why I'm being treated in such a way. It is the duty of the nobility to preserve the people's safety," Constance said.
Claude groaned. "Oh, boy. Not another one."
"And what's that supposed to mean?" Constance said as she sent a glare towards him. She turned back to N. "Do you truly believe I would harm Abyss in my effort to save it? Simply inconceivable."
N shrugged in response. "Fine. You win. Still, if you need assistance, just call out my name."
Constance crossed her arms and turned her head away from the green-haired professor. "I will not be needing any."
N rolled his eyes, but did not respond.
"If something does happen, Elfie will be the one responsible. He will have to answer for it happening," Hapi added.
"Elfie? Who's that?" Byleth asked.
"You must know Aelfric. He's a big wig in the church, but a friend of Abyss," Balthus answered.
N mused the question for a moment. He had never met anyone from the church of importance besides Rhea and Seteth. The other's he knew of were part of the knights. If he had to guess, Aeflric was likely a minister of some kind. He had seen a few, but never met any.
"He's the one who opened this place for folks like us, who have nowhere else to turn. He gave us a home, a new life," Balthus continued.
"It is Aelfric himself who put forthis the idea of establishing the Ashen Absol House. Sadly, he faces opposition within the church. That is why he cannot openly deploy the knights to aid us," Constance added.
"That means he relies on us to protect the people who live here. And now you as well," Yuri said. "I hope you're ready, Professors. We're counting on you."
"Professor?" Byleth and N asked.
"You are professors at the Officer's Academy, right? Then that should be what we should call you," Constance said.
"You could call us by our names," N replied, adding a shrug.
"When did you get so grumpy, N?" Hapi asked.
Her jab caused for a few small laughs to escape from people. Even Byleth turned away for a moment as she saw N's face go beet red.
"Call me whatever it is you wish," N said as he turned away.
"Gotcha," Hapi jabbed. "Seems like you're with us now. We'll owe you one."
Balthus then rallied everyone and the group got in their positions. They waited a bit for the group of mercenaries to appear and when they did arrive, they were shocked to see people waiting for them.
The intruders poured out from the entrance that Yuri had cleared away. They consisted of people using swords and axes. A few had creatures as well. N noticed one with an Ariados and another with a Krookodile.
Despite the mercenaries numbers being greater than theirs, N felt confident they could handle the enemy.
"Dammit! I knew following those shady kids was a bad idea. This place is massive!" one mercenary exclaimed.
Balthus chuckled. "They actually fell for it. Let's get this done!" His Grapplock bellowed in agreement.
"There are still more mercenaries on their way. We left a trail of crumbs for them to follow," Yuri said.
"Wait! There's still more than these?" Hilda exclaimed.
Yuri nodded. "Indeed. We'll need to take them all out, or they'll just keep coming. Let's pull together."
With that the battle began. The group divided into two N decided to follow the Ashen Absols as he wanted to gauge their fighting strength. He knew Balthus was strong and that Yuri was holding something back, but he wanted to see how they battled from an ally's point of view.
"Decided to join us, eh N?" Balthus asked.
"Someone's gotta keep an eye on you guys," N jabbed.
"He's got jokes! Let's see if you can keep up," Balthus said. "Let's go, Grapploct!"
"We can't let them show us up, Zorua!"
The black foxed yipped in response and jumped into battle with his partner.
N followed the large man into battle, but was quickly cut off by a mercenary bringing down his ax. N managed to dodge the blow at the last moment by jumping back. He drew his sword and got into his stance. The mercenary roared and charged. He brought his ax up and prepared to swing it down. N waited for him to swing down and quickly dodged. The ax lodged itself into the ground and N used that moment to attack. With two quick slashes, N cut his opponents stomach. The mercenary tried to keep himself standing, but his wound was too great and he slumped to the ground.
N let out a breath and moved towards his next opponent. He looked to the side and saw Balthus using glowing, pronged gauntlets, dealing death with a single blow. N guessed those were the special gauntlets he had mentioned before. He was glad the large man was on their side.
N's momentary distraction, however, had left him open for an attack. He saw the shadow of a mercenary looming over him when it was too late. He knew was not going to be quick enough to block, so he closed his eyes. But when the attack never came, he heard a thudding of a body and the magical explosion. N opened his eyes to see Constance standing smugly on his right.
"It would seem I am the one to keep an eye on you," Constance said.
N rolled his eyes. "Thanks for watching my back."
"No time for chitchat you two," Yuri said as he cut down two mercenaries with a single swing. "Absol, Psycho Cut on Ariados!"
Absol's horn glowed purple and with the swing of his neck a purple, scythe-like energy was fired. The attack collided with the red arachnid, causing its quick defeat. Ariados' partner quickly picked it up and began to ran away.
N saw Yuri charge up a magical attack, but before he could fire it, N got in his way. Yuri raised an annoyed eyebrow.
"What do you think you're doing?" Yuri asked.
"You won already. No need to continue fighting."
The magical energy in Yuri's palm was extinguished and he put that same hand on his hip. "Look that may be how things go on the surface, but down here we finish off our opponent."
"Then maybe things should change. He ran away. He was not going to keep fighting," N argued.
Yuri shook his head and sighed. "We don't have time for this. We still have mercenaries to take care of."
Before N could say anything in response, Yuri moved on to find his next opponent. N grit his teeth and pushed forwards as well.
"Good luck trying to convince Yuri-bird of that," Hapi said as she jogged next to him.
"I have to at least try," N said.
He turned his attention forwards and the two came to a halt as two mercenaries had decided on making the two their opponents. One had only a sword, while the other was partnered with a Raticate.
"I'll take the one with the sword. Can you take on Raticate with Misdreavus?" N asked.
"I'll manage."
N nodded and charged towards the mercenary with the sword. Their blades clashed in a shower of sparks. N could tell his opponent was stronger, as he easily pushed him back in their blade lock. N grit his teeth and stood his ground, making the stronger mercenary push even harder. N used his weight to roll to the side, causing his opponent to stumble. With his quick slash to his side, N's opponent fell.
He turned to regroup with Hapi, but found himself surrounded by three more mercenaries. One was partnered with a Pumpkaboo.
"Looks like we'll have to provide back up for Hapi later," N mutter to Zorua.
Zorua growled in response and turned to the Pumpkaboo.
N nodded. "I get what you're saying. Zorua, Snarl!"
With a piercing screech of black energy, N used the moment his partner had given to make his move. He knew that he was not the best with a sword, but compared to the mercenaries, he could be seen as an expert. He could never admit to himself, but battle was always fun.
—-
"Man, this Krookodile sure is strong," Ashe muttered.
Byleth and her group had separated into two more groups in order to defeat as many of the mercenaries as possible. In the process, she, Ashe, and Claude ended up having to fight the mercenary partnered with a Krookodile. And the fight was not an easy one.
"How can that overgrown lizard take so many hits?" Claude complained.
"Our attacks just aren't strong enough," Ashe said.
Byleth knew they lacked power. She knew the students at her side were more than capable at fighting a simple mercenary. But when it came to raw power, Krookodile had them beat. She had to hold Charmander back from battling as every time Eevee took an attack, the orange lizard wanted to jump in to help. She was glad Charmander was getting over his shyness, but right now was not the best time for it.
"C'mon, pipsqueaks. Is that all ya got?"
"You know it's not! Treecko, Mega Drain!" Ashe called out.
"Not fast enough! Krookokile, Dragon Tail!"
Treecko tried to fire off his attack, but he was met by a blue glowing tail. Treecko flew into the air and Ashe rushed to catch it. He managed to get under the gecko and have it land safely in his arms. Both Byleth and Claude let out relieved sighs, but were quick to return their focus to the battle.
"Deerling, Double Kick!"
"Eevee, Take Retaliate!"
Deeling and Eevee charged towards their opponent and their attacks made contact. Krookodile stumbled back, but was quick to regain its footing.
"What I'd give to have that damn octopus right now," Byleth muttered.
Claude nodded. "No kidding. I can hear his bellows from here and I know their tearing it up."
Byleth did not respond and turned to Ashe. "How's Treecko?"
"Beat up. I think we're out of this fight," Ashe said.
"That's fine. Just stay back," Byleth said.
Before Ashe could back away, Treecko's eyes opened and he quickly jumped out from Ashe's arms.
"Wait, Treecko!"
However, the gecko ignored his partner and rushed down Krookodile.
The mercenary chuckled. "It seems your little pet still wants to fight. Then I'll gladly finish it off. Krookodile, Crunch!"
"Oh crap! Deerling protect Treecko!"
"You too, Eevee!"
The two creatures moved to defend their friend, but Krookodile was just took fast. In practically an instant, it had covered the distance between it and Treecko. The red crocodile loomed large over Treecko and with glowing teeth it lunged at the small gecko.
"Treecko, dodge it!" Ashe desperately cried out.
However, Treecko did not move. As Krookodile's jaws neared its prey, Treecko began to glow green making Krookodile pause. Even Deerling and Eevee stopped their own advance. The green light faded and Treecko was enveloped in a blue glow. Before everyone's eyes Treecko grew larger. His arms and legs grew longer and on his arms a leafy appendage grew. His hands turned into two claws. His tail grew into two longer leaves and his head a long leafy hair grew. When the blue light faded, Treecko had changed into an all new creature with its roar clueing everyone to his name.
"Treecko transformed into…Grovyle?!" Ashe said as he wiped the tears in his eyes.
Grovyle turned his partner and nodded. He then turned back to Krookodile and lunged toward it. The leaves on his arms glowed green and extended into a sharp blade. In a burst of speed, Grovyle slashed at Krookodile, pushing it back with each strike.
Byleth and Claude looked and each other and understood what to do. Grovyle had given them the opening they needed.
"Follow up, Deerling! Double Kick!"
"You too, Eevee! Take Down!"
The two creatures rushed towards their opponent. When Grovyle's attacks stopped, Eevee's was the first to make contact. She hit Krookodile in the stomach and quickly moved away to avoid Deerling's attack. With his hind legs, Deerling kicked Krookodile at the bottom of its head, somehow launching the crocodile into the air.
"Follow it up, Grovyle! Use that attack from before!" Ashe called out.
Grovlye nodded and his leaves glowed green again. He jumped into the air and with one powerful slash, send Krookodile back to the ground. Krookodile's impact caused for a large amount of dust to be kicked up. When it was cleared, Krookodile was knocked out.
"Ah, Krookodile! Get up you stupid beast!"
However, Krookodile was down and could not hear its partner's words. The mercenary quickly moved to carry Krookodile, putting its arm over his shoulder.
"You haven't seen the last of me!"
The three members of the Officer's Academy wanted to pursue, but they still had other mercenaries to content with. While they were fighting, another group of mercenaries were led into the arena.
"No rest for us it seems," Claude said with a shrug.
"Looks like it. We should go an help the others." Ashe turned to Grovyle. "I think my partner is still looking for a fight."
"I'm sure he'll find one," Byleth said. "Let's link up with the others. Hopefully they'll have thinned their numbers."
The two students nodded and followed their Professor to another part of the arena where the fighting was thickest.
—
To say N was tired was an understatement. Just when one group of mercenaries were defeated another would take their place. N never took pleasure in battle, but he could not deny its thrill. However, that effect had long since worn off. The once separated groups had merged in the center of the arena, using the elevated position to lure their enemies closer. It had worked for them, but with each mercenary group's advance, they fought off fatigue more than anything. Even Balthus, who never appeared to run out of energy, was noticeably quiet.
N wiped the sweat off his forehead as he turned to the mercenaries in front of him. At his side were Edelgard and Hapi. Hapi had stuck around him for most of the battle. The two had managed strong combination attacks with Zorua and Misdreavus that helped in defeating stronger opponents.
As for Edelgard, the two had recently paired up. Despite not communicating much, they still managed to be an effective team. Her Rufflet had managed to defeat several opponents singlehandedly, which surprised the green haired professor. He made a mental not to look into what kind of training she was doing.
When their opponents were cut down, the trio took a moment catch their breaths before regrouping with the others. N gave his last berries he packed to their partners and silently hoped there were similar items back in Abyss' main town.
"Those seemed to be the last ones in this area," Edelgard said as she leveled her axe on her shoulder.
"I hope so. I'm drained and Misdreavus can barely float," Hapi replied. Misdreavus accentuated her words by letting out a sigh.
"Once we have an once of our strength back, we should go help the others," N said.
The two girls nodded.
"Who knew there'd be so many," Edelgard said turning to Hapi.
Hapi shrugged. "I didn't expect to be fighting for this long. Surprised I'm still kicking." She looked towards N. "Maybe I've got you to thank."
"We did make a good team," N replied with a small smile on his face.
Seeing that exchange made Edelgard look away. She felt that feeling from that night returning. She had to push it down fast and stay focused on the task at hand.
"Well, I think we should get moving. The others should be wrapping up their own battles," N said.
Hapi nodded in response, while Edelgard kept facing away from the two. As the trio took a step, a wave of bloodlust washed over them. The air felt cold, but filled with static. The three slowly turned around and emerging from one of the entrances was a knight in black, spiky armor. In his hands he clutched at scythe the glowed with a purple energy. At his side was a Houndoom.
N swallowed as he watched the knight descend the steps. He could Hapi out of the corner of his eye, her legs were trembling. Edelgard look the most composed, if a bit confused.
"I thought I smelled blood. The worms will feast tonight," the Death Knight said.
His piercing red eyes scanned the three in front of him. He shook his head in disappointment.
"You, I do not wish to fight, but the one who drew the sword in the Holy Mausoleum."
N clenched his fist and mustered his courage. He took a step forward and got into a fighting stance. Zoura followed suit and growled at the Houndoom.
"To get to her, you'll have to go through me," N said.
"You're not worth the effort it would take," Death Knight said. "Houndoom, burn them to a crisp! Fire Blast!"
Houndoom howled as flames gathered in its mouth. The black dog opened its mouth wide and stream of fire was shot towards the three. The flames collected to form a symbol as it rocketed toward them.
The three knew they did not stand a chance against the flames and braced for the impact.
"Grapploct, Liquidation!"
In an instant the scorching heat was put out. In front of the trio stood the Balthus' Grapploct, his tentacles cloaked with water. Balthus let out a boisterous laugh and gestured to the knight in front of him with his pointed gauntlets.
"Now, now, why not fight someone who can take you on," Balthus said.
"You're a lifesaver, Baltie," Hapi said as her knees buckled under her weight.
"The hero always arrives late. Isn't that how it goes?" Balthus replied. He turned back to the Death Knight. "Looks like this fight is between you and me, pal. Let's not hold anything back."
"Perhaps you will provide me the thrill of battle before I face the sword. Houndoom, Thunder Fang!"
Houndoom charged towards Grapploct with electrified jaws. However, Balthus made no effort to have Grapploct dodge the attack. Houndoom sank its electrified jaws into Grapploct emitted an shock that enveloped the octopus. When Houndoom let go and return to its partner's side, Grapploct appeared unaffected.
Balthus chuckled. "Looks like you underestimated Grapploct. He may be an octopus, but he's not water type. Use Drain Punch!"
Grapploct's tentacle glowed green and he lunged towards Houndoom. The attack made contact sending Houdoom crashing into the wall. Grapploct returned to Bathus' side and the green arua around it faded.
"It seems you are not all talk. Perhaps you can give me and Houndoom the thrill of battle," Death Knight said.
Balthus smiled. "Oh, yeah? Bring it on then!"
Both men launched towards each other and fist collided with scythe. Meanwhile, Houdoom and Grapploct fought without reviving directions from their partners.
N watched in awe at how Balthus went head to head against his opponent. He did not show an ounce of fear as the his weapon collided with Death Knights. If it were not for the armor, N was sure Death Knight was sweating.
"Balthus sure is strong," N muttered aloud.
"You can say that again," Hapi replied.
"Why is he here?" Edelgard asked in a hushed tone.
N managed to catch she had something, but could not hear what had been said. But based on her expression, she was not happy Death Knight was here. So was he, but her expression felt different.
"Are you guys okay?" a voice called out.
The trio turned to see Claude and Hilda jogging towards them. Based on how they jogged, N guessed that they had finally taken out all the mercenaries.
"We're fine, but a third party is involved," Hapi replied.
"Third party?" Hilda asked.
"Death Knight's here," N said.
N pointed to where Balthus and Death Knight were fighting.
"Why's he here?" Claude asked.
"I would like to know as well," Edelgard said.
The group turned to the battle and saw that despite holding his own, Balthus was beginning to slow down. His attacks did not have the precision from before, while Death Knight still looked to be in top form. The same went for Balthus's Grapploct.
"You seem to be slowing down. Have you already run out fo strength?" Death Knight taunted.
"I still got enough in the tank," Balthus replied.
"Very well. I shall finish this now."
Death Knight raised his scythe and swung down. Balthus managed to avoid the attack and the scythe pierced the ground. When Death Knight retracted the scythe a red energy emanated form the crack in the ground.
The battle stopped there. Death Knight lowered his scythe and studied the red energy. He turned to the group that had gathered and saw the others were joining them. His gaze fell to Edelgard who was glaring at him.
"It seems my time has run out." Death Knight turned to Balthus. "Until we meet again."
"Wait! Stop!" N called out.
Houndoom emitted a smokescreen and Death Knight had disappeared.
"Well, with him gone that was the last of them," Yuri said as he sheathed his sword.
"Finally a breather," Claude groaned.
"I'll make sure the others take out any stragglers," Yuri added.
N let out a breath and sat down. He was so tired. First there was the lack of sleep and two back to back fights was beginning to pile up. If it were not for the fact they were still in the arena, N was sure he would have fallen asleep by now.
Though he was still wondering about Death Knight. While he was impressed Balthus was able to take him on his own, there was still the fact that he had been present. He was clearly not with the mercenaries, which meant he had a different goal. He had said that he was looking to fight Byleth.
His eyes drifted towards Byleth. She was speaking with Dimitri and Ashe. He was surprised to see Ashe's Treecko had become a Grovyle. He made a mental note to ask about it later. He wondered what made Byleth so important. He could tell Rhea found her important, but there was also Death Knight. He seemed to only crave a fight, so maybe that was it. There could be another reason, but what it was he did not even have a clue.
Then there was Edelgard. Her whole expression changed when Death Knight appeared. She appeared to recognize him beyond just what had been said about what happened at the Holy Mausoleum. He wanted to ask her about it, but things were still strange between them. They no longer spoke as casually as they used to. He wanted to ask if it had anything about that moment they shared under the moon, but he could never bring himself to ask.
He sighed and moved to pet Zorua. The fox was as tired as he was.
"Yuri watch out!"
N's head shot towards where the voice came from and saw one final mercenary charging towards Yuri. He held his sword high and was ready to strike down the purple haired young man.
"I will not allow it."
In a flash of purple light a man with red and black robes appeared with a Reuniclus at his side. With a blast of magical energy the mercenary was subdued.
"Aelfric, you're here! Shall we capture this one?"
N got a better look at the man who just appeared. He was obviously from the church based on the robes he wore. However, they were in colors he did not know a minister to wear. Based on the wrinkles on his face he was getting on in years. If N had to guess he was nearing fifty. Then there was the Reuniclus. The floating blob of psychic energy hovered next to its partner. N had never seen one up close before and he could confidently say he was not a fan of the gelatinous creature. Something about it put him off.
The group gathered around the man. The Ashen Absols were all happy to see their benefactor. N and the others had only just learned about him, so a few were skeptical about him. N could also feel something different about Aelfric. His Renuniclus was oddly silent.
"Aelfric! How serendipitous that you have come to our aid!" Constance said.
"I am relieved that I wasn't too late. I do hope my presence proved useful," Aelfric said. He turned to the group from the surface. "I see we have guests."
"You're Aelfric?" Byleth asked.
Aelfric turned to Byleth. His eyes seemed to light up for a moment, but it was quickly washed away with the calm expression he had before. His gaze shifted to N, and had a small moment of surprise before controlling it.
"Indeed, Professor. I do believe this is the first time we have crossed paths, correct? Of course, I have heard all about you from Her Grace, the archbishop." Aelfric turned his attention to N. "I know of you as well. The Officer's Academy first professor about the creatures in a great number of years." He then bowed towards the group from the surface. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Aelfric. The church has granted me custodianship of Abyss."
"You're the one Yuri mentioned before," N said. "Well, it's nice to meet you and your Reuniclus."
Aelfric laughed. "I should've introduced my partner as well. This is Reuniclus." He gestured towards the floating gelatin. "She's not much of a talker so you must excuse her."
"Makes sense why I couldn't hear a voice," N said.
"Pardon? A voice?" Aelfric asked.
"That's besides the point," Edelgard interjected. "You are the caretaker of Abyss?"
Aelfric turned to the white haired girl and nodded. "Indeed I am. I am also a simple monk. I am sure you have already been told about Abyss's unique situation. Many come here seeking refuge for one reason or another. People like the Dagdans and Almyrans, who suffer unjust persecution across Fodlan. All the poor and sick. Along with the others unfortunate souls who ended up here. I believe it is my duty to provide for those with nowhere to go."
N understood his reasoning. He thought that if he had not encountered Jeralt all those years ago, it would have been possible for him to be in Abyss as well. Thinking about the possibility made him look towards Byleth. If that had happened he would have met her for the first time today. He could not image living a life with her or Jeralt in it.
"Right. And the poor and sick living in sunless crypt helps them…how?" Claude asked.
"That's rude, Claude," Dimitri said. He turned to Aelfric. "Please forgive him. We would love to hear more.
Aelfric had a somber expression at hearing Claude's words. "In all honesty, I agree with him. I do wish I could provide something better for my flock. But it would appear that Her Grace and most of the Church consider the presence of Abyss to be… something of a nuisance."
N crossed his arms. "How could that be? Most of us never knew this place existed until today. Who could you be a nuisance to?"
Aelfric sighed. "I'm afraid so. Those within the church who would see Abyss purged are growing in number with each passing day."
"That's the church for you. The make big deal about helping the helpless when it suits them," Hapi said.
"We can't sit back and leave things how they are. We've gotta fight the system!" Balthus said. He accentuated his words by pumping a fist into the air. "Sure, I'm here to hide from the countless bounty hunters after me, but I'm not the only one in need."
"And how did that happen I wonder," Hilda jabbed.
Chuckles escaped from those present at Hilda's words. Even Aelfric had some escape him.
"Anyways…You're in a bad spot, too Hapi. We can't just let the church walk all over us."
"Very true. For the sake of all in Abyss, we must help dear Aelfric to turn the tide!" Constance added.
Guess he's not all talk, N thought.
"I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Your fervent support is all the reward I need," Aelfric said. He then turned to Byleth, but kept N close in view as well. "As for you, Professors, I must ask you for a favor."
"What kind of favor?" Byleth asked.
"The Ashen Absols are a house in name alone. They are eager students with no one to guide them. If you could find it in your heart to take them under your wing, I would be most grateful."
"We're still teachers above ground, you know," N said.
"I am aware of that. I ask that you come when either of your schedules allows," Aelfric clarified.
Yuri stepped forward, shock on his face. "Wait a minute, Aelfric. Where's this nonsense coming from?"
"I second that! We have no need for a professor when we have you," Constance added.
"Speak for yourselves. I like having N around," Hapi said.
Aelfric shook his head. "Dear flock, I am a mere guardian. I can protect you, but I cannot enrich your minds. I may call this gathering an academy house, I have long lamented that it isn't truly so."
Flock sure is a strange word to use, N thought.
"Now, I have the opportunity to change that. The professors who stand before you have garnered a great deal of acclaim from the surface," Aelfric added.
"I can speak highly of both of them. Professor Byleth is the Blue Pyroar house teacher and she has proven many times she is more than capable," Dimitri said.
"As for N, he might be our age, but he's got a few years on us when it comes to knowing about the creatures," Claude added.
N could not help but smile hearing the high praise for the two of them. He always felt like he was not properly teaching them, but hearing their words made his efforts worthwhile.
"See? They are most trustworthy. I also happen to be acquainted with their father," Aelfric added.
"Oh, not me. Just her," N clarified, pointing at Byleth. "I just happened to be picked up along the way."
Aelfric nodded. "I see. Now it makes sense. You did not look remotely like her."
N could tell the relieved look on his face. He never had that reaction to him clarifying his position within Jeralt's band. Most were surprised by the revelation. Then there was the way he said 'her.' N had to guess it was Byleth's mother.
N's eyes widened slightly. If his thoughts were right, that meant that this man knew of Byleth's parentage. If that was true then he would have a better idea about her past. Something Jeralt was never keen on speaking about.
"How do you know my father?" Byleth asked.
"I was born and raised here at the monastery. I often had the opportunity to spend time with him. Your mother, as well. She was a cherished friend of mine. I was even present for their wedding," Aelfric answered.
"Wow. I've more about Jeralt's past in that one sentence than the twelve years I traveled with him," N said.
"I'm surprised Jeralt would not speak about her," Aelfric said. "However, with parents like hers, I have no doubt you possess the kindness and patience needed to lead these students."
"But…" Constance trailed off. By her tone she was still not totally convinced.
"It'll be fine. We're not strangers anymore," Yuri said. "Say, Aelfric…Don't you need to take care of those thieves?"
"I'm still wondering what they wanted…" Edelgard said.
"I'll take care of it and report what I find. So, excuse me." Aelfric replied. "And one more thing, Byleth… If you would ever like to hear more about your parents, I would be delighted to share my memories with you." Aelfric turned to N. "You are welcome to come as well. I can tell you two are close. Akin to siblings I'd say."
N and Byleth nodded in response.
"I would like to hear about them. It's like N said, Father never told me much," Byleth replied.
"I'm delighted to hear it. Well, the sun will be rising soon. I think those of surface need time to rest after back to back fighting from what I've heard," Aelfric said.
As Aelfric finished his words, yawns escaped from those of the surface. Many were tired, but had not realized how tired they were.
"I agree. Grovyle and I need to get at least a bit of sleep," Ashe said.
"It looks like Linhdart's already ahead of us," Claude said pointing to the tall young man.
Standing next to them, the dark green haired teen looked to have fallen asleep standing up. Edelgard sighed in disappointment, while others laughed.
"We'll show you the way to the exit," Yuri said.
"I appreciate that Yuri. Until next time, Professors."

From a high vantage point in the arena, a young man with white hair watched everything that had just transpired. Kage had watched everything with curiosity. He did not expect the appearance of Death Knight for this. Kage had never met the knight personally, but he knew of his reputation. Perhaps he was just that aware of when fighting was taking place.
What had him more curious was the red energy that had escaped from beneath the arena floor. He knew Colress had someone looking into that energy, but did not know the specifics. If his master did not want to tell him, then he was not meant to know. However, he knew it had to do with the creatures. The ones fighting had not noticed it, but he certainly had, the red glow reacted to the sword held by the daughter of Jeralt. He would have to report that to both Ghetsis and Colress.
He watched as the group began to exit the arena. His eyes fell on the man with priest clothes. Aelfric was his name from what Zinzolin had told him. He was the one who knew of the splicer's location. If those from the academy were involved then he would follow them and they would lead them to the location.
There was still the matter of how he would acquire the splicers. It was obvious Aelfric had a plan for them. Kage did not know if Aelfric was fully aware of the power they held, but neither did Kage.
"Maybe it would be in my best interest to see what he does with them and report back," Kage mused aloud.
His partner, Accelgor, muttered a response.
"Don't worry. We will not be noticed."
Kage turned back to the group. His eyes focused on the green haired professor that was talking with a young man with grey hair. He smiled beneath his mask. Ghetsis would be pleased that N was in good health, but a part him was happy for himself. He had never interacted much with the young master, but he was always aware of him. Kage and his siblings were always in charge of keeping a close watch on him.
"This assignment won't be a hard as I thought it would," Kage muttered.
When the group disappeared through the entrance of the arena, Kage gave one last look at the small stream of crimson energy leaking. He moved toward it in the blink of an eye and collected a small sample of it. He held it up to his eye and saw a distinct sparkle to it. He quickly pocketed it.
"Definitely a worthwhile assignment."
In gust of wind Kage and his partner vanished.

N felt uneasy since their return to the surface. He felt unfocused and it was affecting his teaching. The students could tell he was distracted, which made him feel embarrassed. He could still not shake the feeling he was being watched. He had felt it since the return from Abyss.
To try to get his mind off of things he decided to walk around the monastery. Interacting with students and the wild creatures that roamed the grounds always managed him to put him at ease. However, his aimless walking always led him back to the corridor that lead into Abyss. He would stare at it, wondering if he should descend, but could never bring himself to.
He walked around again and found himself not alone when he reached the corridor entrance. He saw Byleth looking at it with an uncertain face. He called out to her, which broke her form her thoughts.
"You look just as bad as me," N joked.
Byleth sighed and hung her head a bit. "What Aelfric told me has bugged me all day. I've never been so distracted before."
"Is it because you want to know about your mother?" N asked.
Byleth nodded. "This is the first time I want to know why Father kept things from me. And he's not even at the monastery for me to ask him."
N shrugged. "There's always Rhea."
Byleth turned to him with an unamused expression.
"It's not a joke. She seems to know a lot about your and my past. It's honestly creepy. It's also the reason I haven't asked about it yet," N explained.
Byleth turned back to the corridor. "I want to ask Aelfric, but it's like you said, something feels off. He's almost too nice."
"I agree with you there," N said putting his hands in his pockets. "But I think in this case he's being genuine."
"You think so?" Byleth asked.
N nodded. "I know he said we should both go, but I can go if need me to be there."
Byleth nodded. "Thanks. If anyone is going to hear this with me, I'm glad it's you."
N smiled. "Of course. C'mon, Zorua." The black fox yipped and hopped onto N's shoulder.
Byleth picked up Charmander and held him close to her chest, while Eevee trotted next to her as she entered the corridor. N followed close behind. Slightly regretting he did not bring a sword with him.
When the two reached the town beneath the monastery, they greeted with a few sideways glances. They were still not totally welcome, but a few people said hello. Wether it was out of courtesy or not, neither of the two were sure.
The two walked towards the Ashen Absol classroom and were surprised to find it empty with just Aelfric standing by one of the bookcases. He was running a finger across different book spines and muttering the titles to himself. His Reuniclus floating next to him, floating discarded books with her psychic abilities.
N cleared his throat in order to get the man's attention. Aelfric turned and smiled at the sight of the two professors.
"Ah, Professors. To what do I owe this pleasure?" Aelfric asked stepping towards the two.
Byelth was silent. She turned to face the ground. Aelfric tilted his head in confusion, while N turned to her. N gently nudged her and when she turned to him he gave a reassuring smile. Byleth took a deep breath and turned to Aelfirc.
"I want yo know about my parents."
Aelfric smiled. "I assumed as much. I would be happy to tell you." He looked between Byleth and N. "Both of you."
Byleth turned to N. He simply nodded, which seemed to have a positive affect. She turned back to Aelfric expectantly.
"Where to begin… If you have anything particular in mind, please ask and I shall tell you as much as I can."
Byleth took in a deep breath and released it. "What was Father like before he left the knights?"
N turned to Byleth in surprise, while Aelfric chuckled.
"I'm surprised you ask that first. I was sure you would ask about your mother."
N put hand on the back of his neck. "The same goes for me. Though, this is something I really want to know about."
Aelfric put a hand on his chin. "Jeralt was…very much then as he is now. HIs knights would have done just about anything for him. Whenever he had time to spare, he would instruct the children of the monastery in combat and tactics."
"Huh, guess that's why he was so patient with me when it came to learning the sword," N said.
Aelfric nodded. "Just like those youngsters, your mother and I made a hero of him in out minds."
Byleth could not help but smile. She had always looked up to her father, but hearing how he was still as caring now as he was then made her happy. She could not help but giggle how he had gotten a bit more cynical with time, however.
"What about my mother?"
Aelfric smiled. "Kind, and wise. I would often see her in the library, her nose always buried in a book."
Byleth elbowed N. "Kind of like you."
N rolled his eyes. "This is your mother not mine. Not like I know mine either." His last sentence came out as a mutter that only Zorua could hear.
Aelfric chuckled at their antics. He had pegged them correctly in that their relationship was like that of siblings.
"When I learned that Jeralt and Sitri were to be married, I was quite surprised," Aelfric said as a saddened expression came to his face.
N quickly understood why he had such a face. It was likely that he had held feelings for her as well. Feelings that had yet to fade. Something else caught Ns attention, the name of Byleth's mother. He could have sworn he had heard it somewhere before, but could not place it.
"Back then, Jeralt was something of a mentor to me," Aelfric continued. "As for Sitri…She found it difficult to express her emotions."
N nudged Byleth again and gave her a cocky smile. "Sounds like someone I know."
Byleth responded by lightly punching his arm. But she could not fight the smile forming on her face.
Seeing her smile so much made N happy. For as long as he knew her, she barely smiled. He had to guess that learning about her mother gave her happiness.
"It was only when she was gazing at Jeralt that I ever saw her smile…" Aelfric trailed off, but a smile formed on his face as he looked to the ceiling. "A smile that rivaled the very sun." He turned back to the two professors. "His tales of the outside world must have seemed like a lifeline for one as frail and guarded as she."
Byleth frowned. "What do you mean by frail?"
Aelfric nodded. "She lacked the strength to travel beyond to monastery. She only ever spoke to a select few within the monastery walls. I would often see her in the garden interacting with the many creatures that inhabit it. I can picture it now, the stories he told her. His striking words and his boisterous laugh. Listening to him must have given her a great deal of hope."
Now N was beginning to feel like she was intruding. He turned to Byleth, who was captivated by Aelfric's story. He sighed a turned to face the ground. He knew this was important for his beast friend, and he wanted to be there for her as much as possible. But in the current moment, he felt like she should be the only one listening to this part.
N looked up to see Aelfric shaking his head with a sad smile. "As for me, I could never have become like Jeralt, as much as I wished for it."
"You wanted to be like my father?" Byleth asked.
Aelfric nodded. "I suppose I did. He would tell stories from a century ago as though he had lived them himself. No matter how much one studies the stories of old, that is no easy task. It always made me wonder how long he had lived."
Aelfric looked between the two professors. "N, Byleth, you traveled with Jeralt before coming here. You must have seen a great many things, yes?"
The two professors nodded.
"If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have been able to get a start on my dream," N added.
Aelfric turned to N with a surprised look. "And what would that be? If you don't mind my asking."
N felt his face heat up. It would be the first time he would say what his dream was to someone besides N. "It may sound childish, but my dream is to see the world. Go beyond Fodlan and meet all the creatures of the world."
Aelfric chuckled. "I see. Sitri had a similar dream as well. She may have not had a partner, but she was always fond of the creatures. Maybe in another life you two could have really been siblings."
N could feel the embarrassment on his face. He turned to N, who smiled sympathetically towards him. Seeing that, helped him calm down a bit.
"Forgive me for overstepping, but do you not regret forgoing your travels to take up residence here?" Aelfric asked.
"At times I do, but right now, I enjoy my work here. I can't say that same about N," Byleth said.
Aelfric turned to N, expecting an answer as well.
"While I prefer being out and traveling, I find myself enjoying teaching. In a way, I'm learning as well," N replied.
Aelfric chuckled. "Well then! That's good to hear. I suppose I have no choice but to assist you as best I can. To shape young minds must afford you a unique perspective on the world. And with how young the two of you are, I'm sure that view will continue to change. I am sure my unsolicited advice is nothing but a nuisance, but please hear me out."
The two professors looked at each other and nodded.
"I'll be glad to hear it. It's like you said, we're young and still have much to learn," N said.
Aelfric nodded. "Thank you. It is my hope that you will live a full life. Experiencing the world, fostering strong bonds with people. Do so for dear Sitri, whose wish to experience such things shall regretfully never be granted."
"Is that why you asked us to teach the Ashen Absols?" Byleth asked.
Aelfric nodded somberly. "I cannot deny it. It is my own stubborn notion. One that Her Grace will likely not think kindly of. But beyond that, I believe that the two of you can guide my flock to even greater heights."
At hearing the word 'flock' again, N rose and eyebrow and crossed his arms. He still felt like ti was weird word to use.
"And perhaps the two of you will learn from them as well." He looked between the two for moment. "Ah, but I have taken enough of your precious time. Know that I am here for you, always."
N and Byleth nodded in response. Satisfied, Aelfric turned back to the bookshelf and ordered Reuniclus to begin stacking the fallen books on the table.
The two professors turned and silently walked out of the dilapidated class room. The two walked in silence. When they reached the corridor passage, N stopped and turned back to look at the Abyssian town. A sigh escaped him.
Byleth turned to him and put a hand on his shoulder. "What's wrong?"
N shook his head. "It's nothing. Just thinking about a lot of stuff."
"Do you still feel distracted?"
N chuckled. "I could ask you the same thing. How are you feeling about what you just learned?"
"I'm happy, but I want to ask Father about it as well. To be honest, my mother sounded like she was a lot like you. I guess the only trait I inherited from her was our quiet nature," Byleth answered.
"Yeah, that's bugging me as well," N said. "How about this, we ask Jeralt about it when he gets back from his mission. Luckily he returns by my birthday, and that's not too far off. For now let's just help the Ashen Absols with their predicament."
Byleth pondered the plan for a moment, but quickly nodded in response. "I think that's for the best."
N smiled. "Great. You stick around here and I'll go get the others and bring them down. Classes are pretty much done for the day."
Byleth nodded. "Got it. I'll see if I can find Yuri and the others."
N nodded in response and jogged into the corridor. Byleth turned back towards the Abyssian town. The two were completely unaware that they had been watched a by two separate parties. Yuri had over heard form a well hidden corner, while Kage watched from a high vantage point. Both curious as to what that all had meant.
AN: With that this chapter comes to end. I had forgotten that the battle in the arena was so stupid long, but I think I managed to get a few interesting things to happen in it. Namely an evolution! I had wanted to start tackling evolutions soon so this chapter felt good as the onslaught of enemies in the game provided for a good way showcase that kind of growth. For Pokemon battles themselves I try to blend stuff form the games, anime and some of the spinoff stuff. I took a lot of inspiration from Pokemon Masters in particular for those three on one battles. Back to evolutions though, Ashe's Treecko evolved! Why him? Because I wanted for him to be the first. No offense to Treecko, but I found fights with him to be a bit bornng. With Grovyle I'm a bit more flexible with what I can write. As for the other evolutions to come, I don't know if I'll be able to get to everyone, but I'll try to get to as many as I can. A few I already have planned out, others I'll work them in if the moments I write call for them.
We also get a bit of character development for Byleth and N. I thought that this could be a good moment to showcase their sibling dynamic and learning about Byelth's mother proved to be a good point for that. While the characters themselves have yet to realize that relationship, I wanted for other charaters to notice it before they do. Plus, we also have some movement in the background. I have a pretty big moment planned for Kage (I also gave the each Shadow Triad member a name. I think they've all been mentioned at least) later in the arc, so I hope you look forward to that.
With al that out of the way, I hope you enjoyed this chapter and stay tuned for the next. I'll try to not to keep the gap between chapters as long. If you are enjoying this story, feel free to follow, favorite, and/or review. Also, follow me on Twitter. I post story updates there as well as other stuff.
