It was a whirlwind. With his fever broken, he was getting stronger. His wounds sometimes seeped through bandages. It just was not as often. He seemed to be a bit more aware as his head would poke upwards towards my foot steps. He also seemed to grab my hand sometimes if it was nearby. I wasn't sure if Mello was comforting himself, reassuring himself, or just telling me he was there for me. Either way, it strengthened our bond and my resolve.
I could sleep better now. I also could eat better too. Most of the infection was still treated with diluted venom but not as much. I could actually give him other foods than soups now. Sometimes I hunted, sometimes I bought, other times I took leftovers that some restaurant was going to throw away. My body also took in more water as did his.
I couldn't wash him all times he was awake. I had not always washed him when he was asleep though. It allowed me to clean myself when needed. His screams did not seem as bad. I wondered if the fever had added to the pain. Then again, cold water did feel like needles from that shower. I bathed him in warm water after his fever broke. The warm water felt like heaven to me.
After a while, the bandages were reduced in need. I could actually sometimes reuse the bandages if nothing leaked. He could grip, eat, and talk. He could walk for short distances. It was a relief that he could walk. I had a small fear that he had some damage to his legs or spine. He did wince sometimes when walking but other than that, the fears were unfounded.
As time went on, he healed and could do much on his own. It took weight off my shoulders to know he could self care while I slept or went somewhere for things we needed. We also could have conversations at night before going to sleep. I talked with him catching him up on what was going on. He gave me his thoughts on it. Eventually, he was able to do a lot despite being blind because of the bandages. He could brush his hair, change his cloths, eat, shower on his own and pray with his beads. It was one of the few moments he looked at peace.
Finally after a bit, came the day we both were looking forward to. This was the day he could take the bandages off his eyes. When that day came, we took off the bandages. He blinked at first getting used to the light. After a minute of adjusting to the light, he got up and looked in the mirror. He could see the scar and traced it with his fingers in shock. Finally he sighed. "I should have expected it I did almost die after all." he said clenching his fist showing he was upset.
"I think it suits you" I replied caressing the scar with my fingertips.
"Kira,Light Yagami will pay. " he said growling showing his anger. I just snipped off the burned ends as a way to calm him down. His messy, uneven but cut hair really had made him more attractive especially in his leather. I couldn't help feeling sad that he couldn't see how attractive he was. "I think it's only right to beet Near in taking down Kira" he continued and I swallowed nervous that it would still be that way.
"please be careful" I said as he walked to a lap top. I saw it was an airfare for New York that he typed. I had a week until I would be having myself head first into danger again. New York was not somewhere I had been in a long time. I could only imagine that he was going to get information from using Near as well as the photo despite knowing it won't do much against the written fate.
