Queen Consort of the Holy Land Chapter 2
From that day forward Sahara's life started. Nothing else mattered, but the love of a father who loved and protected her since the day of her very birth.
Those who do know Sahara's history would say her story truly began with a red tent and the women who raised her there. For whenever Tiberias was occupied between matters of state in Jerusalem or on his own lands Sahara would spend her time with the woman who resided there.
And it was here in this sacred place where the women went to bleed during the full moon that she came to know the secrets and wisdom and love of the women she would come to consider always her surrogate mothers. Four half sisters born of the same father, a cruel and stingy man named Laban a shepherd, who cursed the gods for only giving him daughters when he should've been thanking them for such a blessing.
The oldest, Leah, was strong and capable and splendidly arrogant. Her full blooded sister Rachel possessed a beauty as powerful as it was unearthly and she wielded it like a sword. The other two Zilpah and Bilhah were Laban's daughters by a slave wife. From each these great woman Sahara inherited attributes along with her actual birth mother's that would carry her through the duration of her lifetime all the way till the end.
Even after she left the lands of her birth Sahara can still hear their laughter. The songs and stories they spun like gold and the sacred rituals passed down by their mothers. In the cool shade of the red tent they handed down their memory's to me like gifts and it was through their voices that I came to discover my own.
From these Sahara learned the sacred teachings of the midwives. Eventually as Sahara's skills as a midwife grew it earned her a place of honor amongst the nobles and the peasants. Her "golden hands" as they would be called would deliver more baby's than she could possible count. Sahara's infinite compassion and generosity would exceed no bounds.
The hearts of millions would come to love her, but only one would matter the most.
