Jeremy wailed into his pillow. He still couldn't believe what had happened. One moment, he was talking—okay, more like flirting—with Peter, and the next, Andrew had slapped him and run out crying. It was all June's fault. She had started screaming that Peter was cheating on her cousin with Jeremy, but the wrong person had reacted.
Jeremy had tried to run out after Andrew, but he hadn't listened. He had started dating him shortly after losing interest in Peter. The boy was handsome, but not too bright. Still, that didn't stop Jeremy from attempting to flirt with him occasionally. Now he thought Jeremy had cheated on him, and it was all June's fault.
"Jeremy?"
"Go away, Abigail," Jeremy managed to say through his tears upon hearing the voice. Then, he remembered something. He go up and turned around to see his sister leaning in the doorway.
"Abigail!" He walked over to his twin sister. "You shouldn't be standing. Your ankle—"
"I'm fine," Abigail insisted. "It's feeling better now. Anyway, I heard you screaming and then crying like someone was torturing you. I had to see what was wrong."
"Nothing," he lied. "You should lie down."
"And listen to you bawl your eyes out?" she retorted.
"I'll stop doing that," Jeremy said.
"I want to know why you were doing it in the first place. Did Peter catch onto your flirting and leave?" she added teasingly.
"Yes, but that's not what I care about." No, it was a different person leaving that he did.
"Then what is it?"
"Alright, I'll tell you," said Jeremy. "You know that boy, Andrew?"
"Oh! The one you started dating?"
"We aren't anymore," said Jeremy glumly.
Abigail gasped. "Oh, Jeremy! He broke up with you?"
Jeremy wondered, not for the first time, why she insisted on putting emphasis on every third word.
"No wonder you've been crying," said Abigail. "Why did you break up?"
"I... I'm not really sure," Jeremy admitted. "It was all so confusing. I tried explaining things to him, but he didn't listen."
"Why don't you explain to me?" Abigail suggested.
Jeremy did as she said. She told him how June had started screaming about how he and Peter were having an affair, and Andrew had overheard and slapped him.
"How horrible!" exclaimed Abigail. "How could June say that?"
"I think she was trying to play a joke on Alicia," said Jeremy. "Because she thought Alicia and Peter were in a relationship, and she wanted to make her cousin jealous. But it turns out they weren't, and me and Andrew were.
Abigail frowned. "That is confusing."
"And now, Andrew thinks I cheated on him," said Jeremy. "So he slapped me and ran out."
"How horrible!" Abigail said again. "He thought you and Peter were having an affair?"
"Well, I liked him before," said Jeremy. "But not anymore. He's... not the sharpest tool in the shed. Andrew is smarter, and nicer."
"You go through boys so quickly," teased Abigail.
And you go through enunciated words quickly, thought Jeremy.
"Well, go to Andrew. Tell him it was a mistake," suggested Abigail.
"I don't know," said Jeremy. "He'd probably slap me again."
"Then I'll go to him," suggested Abigail, walking towards the door.
"No," called Jeremy. "You need to rest your ankle."
Abigail walked back. "Just tell him, Jeremy."
"I'm too scared to," Jeremy admitted. "And too mad at June. How could she do that?"
"She had good intentions," said Abigail.
Jeremy scoffed. "Like when she published that article about Moira?"
Abigail pouted. "Are you still mad at me for that?"
"No," said Jeremy wearily. He was annoyed by how she had kept pestering him until he admitted he didn't hate her and loved her, even mentioning the womb they shared.
"Wait," said Abigail. She left the room, and returned a little while later.
"You shouldn't put pressure on your leg," Jeremy warned. Then he saw what she was holding.
"The newspapers," she said, holding them up. "Let's look at them. Maybe it'll take your mind off everything."
Abigail lay the newspapers on the bed, and Jeremy flicked through them. He smiled as he saw June's poem written in one of them. He was sorry about publishing it, but the poem was very funny.
"I bet you'd write a poem like that about Peter or Andrew," teased Abigail.
"I wouldn't!" Jeremy denied.
He frowned as he saw the newspaper about Moira, but Abigail quickly put that one aside. He looked at the one about Alicia and Betty. He had exaggerated slightly and said they were smoking and drinking addicts. He felt a little bad about publishing that one as well. If their parents found out, they were dead.
He didn't know how his father would react if he knew his secret. June had almost revealed it to him. Would he mind, or would he not?
Jeremy laughed as he read the other newspapers, like the one about Sam and Betty as "Couple of the Month". "We got some good gossip," he said.
Abigail grinned. "No one in town is safe with their secrets with us around."
"Aside from my secret, of course," said Jeremy.
"Is it really a secret anymore?" Abigail asked. "Everyone knows."
"Yeah," Jeremy admitted. "At least no one teases me about it. They don't want to be the subject of an article."
"I threatened June with that, when she was threatening to tell everyone," said Abigail.
"You did?" Jeremy asked. "Thanks."
"And I told Alicia I'd ruin her life if she told anyone," said Abigail.
"Thanks," said Jeremy, feeling guilty about being mean to his twin sister. She had accepted him immediately, and it was mostly thanks to her that his secret remained a secret for so long. "Well, thanks for trying to cheer me up. But you should lie down. Your ankle is hurt."
Abigail left. Jeremy smiled. She could be annoying sometimes, but she could also be nice.
