Unshown Moments from Help Me Kitty, Season 10 – (3)
Nettie and Hope looked out the window, watching as Kitty stood talking to the tall man, they both knew, and then basically collapsed into his arms. They couldn't tell, as her head was turned, but by the way her shoulder's shook, they both knew she was probably crying.
Hope was the first to step away and find her way back to the sofa to sit down. Her mother soon followed. Both had a wistful expression on their faces.
"I don't guess, I'll ever see that kind of love." Nettie sighed, thinking about the way the Marshal had looked as he held Kitty in his arms.
Hope nodded. "I know. I thought that was what I had with Ed but…" She looked over at her mother. "Well, obviously not. He didn't even come after me."
Nettie looked over at Hope with a small look of contempt for the worthless man that had beguiled and used her daughter. "Ed didn't love you, Hope." She said matter of factly. "He cared only about himself and when you left, he probably chalked it off as your problem and went to look for someone else. If he had of loved you, he'd tried to find you. He'd been like the Marshal out there and not stopped until he did."
"Did my father love you like that?" Hope asked quietly.
Nettie wanted to say yes, and reassure her daughter that he loved not only her but Hope as well, but she couldn't lie. "Your father loved as best he could." She finally answered. She knew it wasn't the answer Hope wanted but it was better than bluntly telling her that her father couldn't love anyone because he was consumed with himself.
Hope wasn't happy with that answer, but she accepted it. Settling back against the cushions on the sofa, she thought about how the Marshal and Miss Kitty had clung to one another in front of the house. She didn't have to hear what they'd said, to know that they loved one another and he'd most likely come for her because of that love.
Looking down at her still flat stomach, she thought of the small life growing inside it. Gently rubbing it, she sighed. "When my boy gets old enough to understand," she sighed, "I'm going to teach him to love a woman like that. Only I'll add that marrying that woman is just as important."
Nettie looked over at her daughter. "We'll both teach him." She smiled. "But don't think that just because the Marshal and Miss Kitty don't have a paper between them that they're not married. They may not have stood before a preacher, but they're committed to each other just the same."
Hope frowned over at her mother. "How do you know?"
Nettie closed her eyes and sat back, resting her head on the back of her chair. "I spent time watching them when I worked for Kitty. Trust me, they're married in their hearts."
Hope silently nodded and again looked down at her unborn child. She didn't know if she'd find a man who would love her like that and accept another man's baby to boot, but if she didn't, she'd at least teach her child the importance of love and respect and care. Kitty Russell and Matt Dillon would be her examples.
