Frank Miller sighed as he watched his children walk down the road with his wife, his wife smacking his eldest boy over the head for swearing. He had moved down to Texas about ten years ago looking for cheap land and a chance to make money and had intended to go all the way to California, but he had met his wife and had settled down before he knew it. Not that was a problem, he was quite happy with his life, but there had been trouble with outlaws and thieves for many years. Unfortunately for him and his neighbors, they had suffered at the hands of cattle thief's for about five years before something strange had happened.

A young man with golden hair and sky-blue eyes, no older than twenty, had come to town looking for work as a cowboy. Which had been fine for the first few weeks, Frank had hired him personally on his ranch and had taken a liking to him after he had chased off some would be cattle thieves. While the kid's full name was Alfred, everyone just called him Fred. Fred got along with everyone, especially his kids, and many of the older lady's in town spoiled him due to his charming nature and cute face. Unfortunately, the kid had a great sense of justice, and often got in trouble with some of the more questionable people in town.

Like that time he got into that bar fight and got thrown out a second floor window because someone had insulted one of the lady's in town. Everyone thought he had broken his neck but not a half an hour later he was up and at it like nothing had happened. Then there was the time his had chased after a couple of horse thief's and they shot him three times. The doctor said that Fred was on deaths door, but a week later he was back on the ranch, although his wife and forbid him to do any heavy lifting. Then there was the time a wild horse that a farmer was trying to tame kicked him in the head. How he walked away without dying was anyone's guess, and even Fred was thankful that he didn't get too badly hurt. Hell, just last week the kid was in the middle of a stampede and somehow, he didn't even get a scratch. And for some fucking reason Fred liked to chase after criminals in his spare time, and somehow, he hadn't been shot through the head. Due to all his brushes with death, the people around town had started calling him Unkillable Fred.
As he and his wife walked into town, he saw that there was a commotion going on near the train station. Curious, he walked over to one of the people on the edge of the crowd and tapped his shoulder.

"Excuse me sir, what's all the commotion about?" Frank asked. The man turned to him with a grim expression.

"Oh Frank, I think someone just ran off the find you, it isn't good. Fred's been in another accident, and I don't think he's getting up from this one."

"What do you mean?" His wife asked, a concerned look coming over her face.

"I'm sorry ma'am." The man said with a shake of his head. "Little Johnny, you know, Mary's son? He had been waiting on the platform with his mother and she had let go of his hand for a second and somehow he fell onto the tracks just as the train was coming. Fred jumped down and was able to throw Johnny up to his mother, but before he could get off the tracks the train hit him head on. He's still under the train, they're trying to get his body now I think."

Franks wife gasped and covered her mouth in horror, and Frank felt his face fall. He always knew that boy was pushing his luck, but he never actually thought he could die. And for it to be a train of all things. Frank had seen what those trains did to his cattle when they hit them, and it wasn't pretty. If Fred had been hit head on, there probably wasn't much left of him.

"May I go see him?" Frank asked.

"Yeah, I know how close you were to him." The man said with a sympathetic expression.

"Although," he said, nodding towards his wife and children, "they don't need to go in. It's not something they need to see."

"Quite right." Frank said sadly, pushing his way through the crowd and onto the platform. As he walked to where Mary was clutching her child and weeping, he saw a group of men, who he guessed were the railroad workers surrounding something. The conductor of the train was also sitting there, looking guilty and was saying over and over again, "I couldn't stop in time."

Walking up to the group, he felt his heart drop as he saw Fred's body on the ground, covered up with a sheet. There was blood on the tracks where he had been hit, and Frank had to look away, his stomach twisting uncomfortably.

"Looks like Fred couldn't beat death this time." One of the workers sighed, shaking his head.

"Damn shame, he was a good kid." Another said. Spotting Frank, the worker put his hand on his shoulder shaking his head. "I'm sorry Frank, by the time we got to him he was dead."

Frank nodded, walking over to Fred's body. Fred had talked about his brothers before, even got letters from them time to time. It was his duty to bury the boy, and to inform them of his passing. It was only right. But as he pulled back the sheet to look at the poor boy, he saw a pair of bright blue, very much not dead, eye's glaring up at him.

"Hey, I'm not dead yet." Fred said angerly. "Who ever checked on me did a poor job."

Frank felt his jaw drop, and a few of the rail road workers started shouting. Mary screamed in shock and fainted, and Fred just rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I know, I look like shit. I think my legs are broken. And my arm. You know what, I think everything is broken. Yeah, that's a safe assumption."

"How in the ever-loving hell are you still alive boy?!" The train conductor yelled.

"I don't know." Fred said with a shrug. Then Fred swore and grimaced. "Yeah, that was a stupid move."

"Somebody get a doctor!" One of the workers yelled, running towards the crowd. "FRED IS STILL ALIVE!"

There was a shout of disbelief from the crowd, and then a few cheers were heard. "He's done it again, that damn son of a bitch!" Someone shouted.

"But you were dead! You had no pulse! I know you were dead!" The train conductor yelled hysterically.

"Look, can someone please just set my bones back in place before we start talking about how I should be dead. I'm still in an incredible amount of pain." Fred huffed.

"Alfred." Frank sighed, clutching his chest. "You're going to kill me one of these days."

"Sorry Frank." Alfred said with a grimace. "If you don't mind, I think I'm going to pass out."

After he was rushed over to the doctors, it was discovered that Alfred had two broken legs, his right arm was broken, he had a few cracked ribs, and a large amount of cuts and bruising, but other than that, he was fine. And about three weeks later, Alfred was well on his way to recovery. However, due to train conductor telling everyone that Fred had come back from the dead, there were a few rumors being spread around town. Some people claimed Fred to be the luckiest or the unluckiest person in the world, while others were saying that God must have loved the boy too much to let him die. Then there were people who claimed Fred had sold his soul to the devil in order to never die. And the rumors just kept getting crazier and crazier. Someone even said that Fred never seemed to age, and clearly that was proof that it was the devil's work.

When Frank had told Fred about the rumors, Alfred had gone quiet, then shook his head sadly. "Maybe it's time for me to go." Fred had said with a sad smile. "Plus, I think I've had too many brushes with death. I think I'll go to one of the cities. It's a bit safer there. Plus, there's a less likely chance of being kicked in the head by a horse." He had said with a wink.

About a month later, his twin brother had come to town to help his brother come to the city. After a brief shouting match, with Fred's brother telling Fred how stupid he was, Fred had been wheeled to the Train station, were he said his goodbyes to Frank and his family. After promising to see them all again someday, and with a sad smile, Fred left town. Frank never did see him again, but the town never forgot about Unkillable Fred.
