Alfred sighed as he pushed his glasses up on his face, glancing down at the small notebook on his lap. When his boss had told him to cover the news about Germany and Czechoslovakia he hadn't thought much of it, but now he was looking over the new information he found the facts to be a bit concerning.
He was currently at his desk at the publishing firm he was currently working with, and in front of him were all the notes he had taken down from his attendance at multiple press conferences. From what he had been able to gather, Hitler had his eyes on parts of Czechoslovakia and was demanding that he have them, and Great Britain, France, Italy, and Germany had just had a meeting on what to do about the problem. Somewhere in Munich, Germany if he remembered correctly.
From what he learned in the last few months, Europe wasn't really fond of having another big war, so when Germany had started demanding that Germans in Czechoslovakia be reunited with their homeland, England and France, (who both had an alliance with Czechoslovakia), really weren't jumping out of their seats to have a military confrontation. Not that Alfred blamed them, after what happened during the European War, (or as some people were calling it the World War), he could see
why they were hesitant to start another war.
"Hey Alfred, what are you up too?" Robert asked, walking over to Alfred and leaning over to look at the paper's on Alfred's desk. Robert was in charge of the sports section, and often was found anywhere but his desk.
"Working." Alfred said with a slight smirk. "A concept you probably aren't aware of."
"Aw, come on." Robert said, pouting down at Alfred. "I work."
"Yeah, but only when the boss is looking." Alfred snorted, looking back down at the papers in front of him.
"Well, you have to admit that he's a hard ass." Robert said, picking up a random paper off of the desk and scanning it. "What is the boss having you cover?"
Alfred shrugged and gave a bored wave of his hand at the paper in Robert's hand. "Just that thing
about Germany taking over Czechoslovakia."
"Dang, he's not going easy on you huh?" Robert said, letting out a low whistle as he read the notes Alfred had taken. "Is this going to be the front cover story?"
"Unfortunately." Alfred sighed.
"What did you do this time to get stuck on this project?" Robert asked, giving Alfred an unimpressed look. "Did you ask for a pay raise again?"
"No." Alfred said, snatching the paper out of Roberts hand and putting in back on his desk. "If you really need to know, all I did was point out a spelling mistake in last week's paper."
"Was it his article?"
"Maybe…"
Robert shook his head. "Alfred, you know better than that. The boss is nothing but perfect! The boss can do no wrong!" He said, waving his hands dramatically. "Did he yell at you?"
"Nah, he just called me a smart ass and said since I'm so observant I can take over his project for this week." Alfred said with an eyeroll.
"He must have been in a good mood." Robert said with a chuckle, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and offering them to Alfred.
"Robert, you know I don't smoke." Alfred said with a frown.
"Ah, that's right. Sorry." Robert said with an apologetic smile as he pulled one out and lit it. "You said you quit, didn't you?"
"Never started." Alfred said, wrinkling his nose at the smell of smoke. "They smell horrible."
"Maybe that's why you always smell like the fresh air." Robert said with a laugh, slapping Alfred on the back. "So, getting back to the topic at hand, how's Europe doing, are we going to have another war on our hands?"
"I don't think so." Alfred said with a shake of his hand. "I heard the negotiations went well, so war should be averted."
"Thank god for that." Robert said darkly, shaking his head. "But it's getting rather tense around that part of the world, don't you think?"
"Yeah, it is." Alfred sighed, glancing at a photo of German's Leader that had been taken a few months ago. He could see Germany standing nearby, looking rather determined and tense.
"It's better we stay out of it. Let the Europeans sort it out." Robert said with a snort. "If they want to have another war, that's none of our business. Them and that lot in Asia. The Japanese are still fighting the Chinese, right?"
"Yeah, and they were also fighting with the Soviet Union as well at one point I think." Alfred said with a small frown. "I didn't hear who won that conflict."
"It was a ceasefire." Robert said with a shake of his head. "Although I'm sure it won't be the end of the fighting."
"Yeah, probably not." Alfred agreed. "At least it won't affect us at all."
"That's true. Anyways, so what was the outcome of the meeting between Chamberlain and that German leader?"
"They basically agreed to let Germany take over Czechoslovakia." Alfred said, holding up Chamberlains Speech. "I believe that Chamberlain promised, 'Peace in our time.', or something along those lines."
"Bold of him." Robert said, skimming over the speech with a frown.
Alfred hummed in agreement. "Yes, but I don't think just giving Germany what they want is a good thing. What's stopping them from just looking at the next peace of land and taking over it too? I mean-" he said, waving the speech in Roberts face, "-think about it. Germany now has a stronghold over central Europe, the English and French are turning a blind eye to the whole thing which is pretty much telling Hitler he can do what ever he wants, and poor Czechoslovakia doesn't even get a say in the matter, all in the name of peace. Something just doesn't seem right to me."
Robert sighed, and gave Alfred a serious look. "Look, I like you Alfred. You have a head on your shoulders when you aren't being an idiot. But now isn't the time for speculation. No one wants to hear about how the world is going to shit. They just want to hear that they aren't going to go to war again. And I'm sure the boss man isn't going to be happy with you if you spin this in a negative light, so just say something along the lines of, "We aren't going to war, hooray!", or some bullshit like that. Make Chamberlain out to be the hero and hope that nothing else happens."
"Yeah, I know." Alfred sighed. "But I can't shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen."
"Ah, it's all in your head." Robert said with a laugh.
"ROBERT, JONES!" The boss barked, sticking his head out of his office. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING YAPPING AWAY LIKE SOME GOSSIPING WOMEN? GET BACK TO WORK!"
"Yes sir!" Robert said, giving the man a mock salute and hurrying back to his desk. Alfred just sighed as his boss slammed his door closed, and looked down at the papers in front of him. Something didn't feel right, but at the same time he didn't want to get involved. Plus, it wasn't like he was itching to start anything, and hell, he was pretty sure no one wanted him involved anyway. "It'll be fine." Alfred said with a shrug, grabbing a pen. "These things tend to work themselves out anyway. What's the worst that can happen?"
A/N: HAHAHAHAHAHA! You thought I was done?! NOPE! I've had a few chapters I've been meaning to post for months now, but thanks to a broken computer I haven't been able to publish them, but since I just got it up and running again, I have multiple ones I'm going to post to make up for being away for so long! I have one more after this, and then I'll be working on the new chapters.
