Unshown Moment for The Wedding S17 (1)
"Well, I'm sorry, Kitty." Matt tucked the wire into his pocket. "Maybe when I get back."
"Sure, Matt." She answered, with absolutely no expectation that would happen.
"What was that there about, Miss Kitty?" Festus asked as Matt walked out of the saloon, headed to Salt Flat.
"It's called daydreaming, Festus." Kitty sighed with a roll of her eyes.
"Daydreaming?" Festus questioned. "About what? And what's that got to do with Matthew a ridin' out?"
"It's not important, Festus." Kitty shook her head. "It doesn't matter."
"What doesn't matter?" He continued to ask.
"Festus..." Kitty stopped herself from saying anything more. Matt's receipt of that wire wasn't Festus' fault. No sense in shooting the messenger. "I've got work to do, Festus." She told him as she got up and left the table, heading for her office. She didn't see Doc coming into the saloon or hear him call her name.
"Kitty?" When she didn't answer or turn back, he shuffled over to the table she'd left and looked down at Festus. "What's wrong with Kitty? What'd you do to her now?"
"I ain't done nothin' to her, you old goat." Festus scowled at him. "If'n ya ask me, I think she's mad at Matthew."
"Mad at Matt?" Doc questioned. "What'd he do now?"
"Well, I ain't actual sure." Festus shrugged. "But I think he done went and ruined a day dream or something."
Doc wasn't sure of the details but he had an idea that Festus wasn't too far from the mark. Without another word to Festus, he turned and headed to Kitty's office. He didn't knock as he opened the door and he didn't hesitate at the threshold. He simply walked in, closed the door behind him and stood there.
Kitty heard the door open and from the corner of her eye, she could see it was Doc. But she wasn't much in the mood to talk to him. Refusing to turn in his direction, she simply waved a hand to ward him off. "Uh, Doc, I'm not…"
"I know." Doc interrupted. "Matt's ridden out on your plans again and you just plan on burying your head in work and trying to forget about it. And by the time he comes back, you'll be exhausted and thinner and it won't matter that he'll have something else to do and still won't be able to spend time with you."
Kitty finally turned around and offered him a weak smile. "How'd you know?"
"I don't." Doc answered. "At least not exactly. But Festus said Matt ruined your daydreams. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the rest."
"Kitty nodded. "We were going to take tomorrow off and go on a picnic. But he had to ride out and go get a prisoner. I know I'm too old to daydream but for a moment there, before Festus handed him that wire, I actually thought one of those daydreams would come true. I should've known better." Kitty turned back around, not wanting to show how much that bothered her. " You're a wise man, Doc." She said softly, as she stared down at her desk. "Do you have any cures for a silly woman to keep her from daydreaming about things she can't have?"
"No," Doc plowed his hands in his pockets. "No, honey, I don't. But then again, I don't think you're a silly woman. And I don't think you can't have what you want, at least not all the time. Matt doesn't always put you first the way he should but he cares about you, Kitty. And I can guarantee you, that somehow, when he returns, he'll figure out someway for you two to spend some time together without that badge to pull him away."
Kitty looked up at Doc, a fleeting hopeful look crossed her face. "You think so?"
"I know so." Doc answered affirmatively. "Now, I'm not as tall as the Marshal but I'm better looking than he is. So what do you say you have dinner with me? Huh? What do you think?"
Kitty shook her head with a laugh. "I think you're one of those dreams come true, Doc." She said as she got to her feet. "Come on, let's go."
