Kitty gritted her teeth as she whipped the horse into a gallop and rode away from the Crocker brothers. Her side hurt bad but she ignored the pain and concentrated on the only thing that mattered. Matt. She would endure whatever pain she had to in order to get him free.
Of course, she knew the odds were long on her getting the town to put up fifteen thousand dollars and they were just as long on Crocker letting Matt and her go when he got the money. But she didn't care. She was a gambler by nature and she'd faced long odds before and won. And never were the stakes this high.
Kitty rode for an hour before she had to bring the horse to a stop. Her side was hurting too much to continue riding. Gingerly, she got down and began to walk, unwilling to stop for anything until she got to town. When her legs could no longer carry her, Kitty remounted and began riding again, determined to make it to town as soon as she could.
The streets were dark when she finally made it. She was close to the limits of her strength but she still had a ways to go. Festus saw her as she rode in and when she saw him, despite her pain and worry, she felt relief. Some how she was going to get the money she needed to save Matt's life.
