The whole hospital room was waiting in anticipation when Iduna and Agnarr came into the room. But just one look at their defeated faces was enough to sadden the whole mood, no words were needed. Elsa slumped back into her bed. Bulda tried to comfort her, but it was game over for Elsa, there was no silver lining on this cloud. She would die.
Just when everyone was losing their hope, Anna raised her voice: "I'll get tested."
Most of the faces in the room lit up for that, some were feeling conflicted. No one felt as conflicted as Anna's parents. And so Iduna said: "I'm not sure that's a good idea. You're still young and—"
"Yes, I'm young and healthy and close to Elsa's age. I'm the best match!" Anna declared, no hesitation in her voice.
"Anna, I love you, and I appreciate what you are trying to do for me. But it wouldn't be right," Elsa told her. She was getting tired of the emotional rollercoaster.
"Of course, it would be right. I have two kidneys, you have none. I'm your sister, thus I should share mine."
Before Elsa could answer anything. The nurse came to inform that the visiting hour was over, and they should let Elsa rest a little. They bid their farewells to Elsa, and started leaving the room.
Before leaving, Anna turned to the nurse: "Hey, I'd like to get tested for organ donation, could you help me."
"Yes, of course. I'll show you where to go," the nurse answered and started to lead Anna out of the room.
"Pardon me," Elsa asked before they were out of earshot. They both stopped and turned around. "Could you please ask my doctor to visit if he just has time? I'd really like to talk to him."
"Yes, of course. I'll send him this way. Try to rest now," the nurse answered, and left with Anna.
"According to our tests, you are suitable match for our patient. So, if you are interested in donating, we should really go through all the risks together, before you make any decisions."
"You mean, I can save Elsa's life?" Anna asked, needing to heard the exact words to believe.
"Yes, this kidney transplant would improve the patient's life greatly," the doctor answered, tone all professional.
"If my kidney can save my sister, I don't care about the risks," Anna told boldly.
"We cannot make the procedure, if our client isn't fully informed on all the risks and dangers of it."
"Then, why are we wasting time? Tell me all about the procedure, doc." Anna crossed her arms and sat deeply into her seat.
Anna had hardly been able to sleep at night, she couldn't wait to rush to Elsa to tell the good news. She had immediately called her parents; they had been quite concerned. Kristoff and Bulda had also been a little worried about her, but not unrelieved. Olaf had just been as happy as Anna. But Elsa's face was the one she actually wanted to see, reacting to the news.
Kristoff had promised to take her to the hospital immediately, when the visiting hours started. And so, she had crammed herself into Kristoff's messy car with Kristoff, Olaf and Bulda exactly at 12:30 that day. She babbled with Bulda the whole way, barely able to hold down her excitement. She could actually change Elsa's whole life. To give Elsa life.
She wanted to run to the hospital room, but forced herself to walk with the slow pace others were walking too. The journey to Elsa's room felt like it took forever. But when they finally reached their destination, Anna sighted out loud with relief. That made Elsa to turn her attention towards them.
Anna couldn't help but smile like a maniac. She wanted to drag out the surprise, but couldn't suppress down her feelings. Not when she looked at Elsa on her hospital bed, and had the knowledge that she could get her out of it.
Elsa looked at her, questioning expression on her face. Trying to figure out why she was smiling so brightly. But apparently Anna's smile was contagious, as soon Elsa was granting them that adorable smile that so rarely plastered on her beautiful face. And when Anna had thought the day couldn't possibly get any better.
"I'm a match," Anna breathed out.
"What?"
"I'm the match! I can donate my kidney!" Anna all but shouted. She was getting really worked up. She almost jumped her way to Elsa's bedside.
"Anna—"
"Elsa, I'm your match! You can get my kidney. You'll be fine Elsa!" Anna took hold of Elsa's hand and squeezed them with all the joy she had in her.
Elsa opened her mouth, but closed it again. She seemed like she really wanted to say something, but couldn't find the words. Then she made this really troubled face, and darted her eyes to her adoptive family.
"Els, what's wrong?" Kristoff asked from the doorway. Taking couple tentative steps towards his sister.
"You'll get healthy, Elsa. Why aren't you happier?" Anna asked, catching on Elsa's troubled look.
"I— Uh, I—," Elsa tried, but just couldn't manage to get out the words.
"My dear, tell us what's going on." Even Bulda was getting a little nervous with Elsa's behavior.
Elsa fixed her eyes to her own lap, where her hands now laid. She lowered her head and mumbled something under her breath. But not even Anna, who was next to her, couldn't understand what she was saying.
"What? Can you say that again?" Anna asked.
Elsa took deep breath and turned her gaze to Anna. This time making eye contact and saying with more confident voice: "I'm not taking your kidney."
"Wait, what?" Anna was puzzled. "What are you talking about? Of course, you'll take it."
"Anna, I talked with a doctor. There are risks with the donation. And you would need to get tests annually for rest of your life. It's not the life I want for you," Elsa argued.
"Those are pretty damn insignificant when it's your life is on the stake!" Anna almost shouted. "I don't care about those things."
"You don't care now, but maybe someday you will. I won't allow you to make that decision, when you can't undo it if you start to regret it," Elsa told her firmly.
"Ifs and maybes. They do not matter. Now is now, and now I want to donate you my kidney and get you back to your health."
"I care about your future. And my answer is no."
"You don't get to decide on this!" Anna yelled at her. She was getting frustrated with the blonde.
"But that's where you are wrong. I get to decide, and I have decided. I refuse the donation." Anna had never seen Elsa keep her ground as bravely and regally. In any other circumstance she would have been extremely proud of her. But did this had to be the place where she learnt to force her will?
"I can't believe you!" Anna threw her hands on the air and stormed out of the room.
Once Kristoff saw Anna disappear into the depths of the hospital, he turned to the blonde. "What the hell was that?"
"What?" Elsa played coy.
Kristoff sighed and ran his hand through his hair. Then he turned to his mother and little brother. Olaf looked confused and even a little scared. Kristoff needed to get him out of there. "Mom, can you please take Olaf to the cafeteria for hot chocolate? I'll talk with Elsa."
Bulda seemed conflicted for a moment. She clearly wanted to have a word or two with her daughter. But when she looked at Olaf, she seemed to agree that he didn't need to hear this. "Let's go, little fella," she said and took the little boy with her.
Kristoff waited and watched them go. Then he turned back to Elsa and walked next to her bed. He pulled chair to him, and sat down. Now they were more leveled with each other.
"So, what was that all about?"
Elsa slit her eyes a little, like trying to read her brother's face. "You heard us," she answered simply.
"Yes, I heard you, loud and clear. I just don't understand you. Why would you say to Anna, that you won't take her donation?"
"Because I won't take it."
"But why Elsa?"
Elsa inhaled deeply and broke their eye contact by pushing the back of her head in her uplifted pillow and gazing the roof. "I'm just so tired."
"If you are tired, then sleep. It's not reason to throw away an opportunity to get healthy." Kristoff was getting a little frustrated with the blonde, too.
"Not tired like that, Kris. You know what I mean. I'm so tired of this all. This fighting. Constant battle with my health," Elsa explained.
Kristoff took her hand, willing it to give her some strength. "The battle is almost over now. You just need to take the opportunity you are given."
Elsa looked deep into Kristoff's eyes. She pursed her lips, pained expression marring her face. "It's never over. There's so much that can go wrong with the kidney transplant. Honestly, it might not even work, and I would have risked Anna for nothing."
"Anna is willing to take that risk."
"But I am not." Elsa needed Kristoff to understand where she came from. "I love Anna, but she's not known for her capability to think through these things. I've lived almost all my life sick. Spent way more time in hospitals than I care to remember. This is not a life, I'm willing to drag anyone into. And I myself, can't go on like this anymore. Kristoff, please, you have to let me go now."
Kristoff didn't answer, just pursed his lips. His expression was void of any emotion, when he just turned around and walked away. Elsa watched him go with sad, pained face.
Anna saw Kristoff sitting on the sidewalk, throwing rocks on the empty road and watching them slide on the asphalt. There was certain anger in his movements, that made her hesitant to approach. But then she remembered what made him mad, and started to gain back her own anger.
She stood there for a moment, recharging all the fury she had had back in the hospital room. When she was positively fuming, Anna finally drew Kristoff's attention.
"I can't believe her!"
Kristoff didn't answer, but his movement halted enough for Anna to know she had his attention. So, she went on. "She's weak and selfish! How could she—no! How dare she give up now. Just like that, like her life never even mattered. Even if she doesn't care about herself, can't she see that we do care for her? I just got her, and now she wants me to just let her die, because she's tired of fighting? Well, let me tell you, I'm not tired! This can't be over like this! I get that this is hard for her, but life is hard. Sometimes we just have to suck it up and suffer for those we love."
The last sentence made Kristoff finally straighten his back like a lightning had struck him. His sudden movement made Anna quit her angry pacing, and concentrate on the man.
Kristoff turned his head to finally face Anna. "You're right. All this time—how have I been so blind?"
"Uh—?" Anna was confused of the sudden change in Kristoff, and little disoriented from her interrupted rant.
Kristoff got up, took Anna's head between his hands, and smiled with a smile so earnest, yet so glum somehow. "Thank you, Anna, really. You gave me a resolution I truly needed. Now I have to go to talk to my sister, before I lose the nerve and focus."
And with that, Kristoff stalked off to the hospital. Anna stood a moment still, trying to process, before running after him.
"Yes! Go talk to some sense into her. Don't let her off so easily!"
When they got back to the hospital room, they realized they had been gone long enough for Anna's parents to come. Agnarr, Iduna and Bulda were all arguing with Elsa about her decision. Elsa just laid there, eyes fixed at the wall, refusing to acknowledge any of them anymore. She had her arms tightly crossed on her chest and frown deep enough to cause permanent wrinkles on her poor face.
Anna watched the scene and suddenly started doubt whether Kristoff's words could hold any more meaning than any of the other adults' in the room. She saw poor Olaf in the room, looking so lost. He reminded her so much of her own childhood. She just wanted to scoop him up and made it all go away. She wanted everyone to just stop.
Kristoff beat her to it. "Everybody, just shut up!" He yelled and the whole room quieted and turned to see them standing there, on the threshold. Even Elsa stopped thrilling hole to the wall with her eyes, and turned to see her brother.
"I get it now, Elsa," Kristoff said, with so much emotion. "And I've been so selfish, we all have been. This is your life and your fight. I'll support you as much as I can, but I can't ever walk this path for you. No matter how much I want to and how much I have tried to. If this is the place where your path needs to end, I don't want to be fighting with you about it. I want to hold your hand and see you to the other side. Els, my darling sister, I know I haven't been the support you have needed, but now I will be. I support your decision, even if it's not the one I wish for you."
Elsa looked her brother with a face that he had secretly always wished for. It was pure gratitude, even with sad tears streaming down her cheeks. This was the only time he truly didn't wish for that face, but perhaps that was the reason, why this was the first time he deserved it.
Anna on the other hand, couldn't believe her ears. She probably spoke for everyone else in the room, but Elsa and Kristoff, when she said loudly: "Wait, what?"
