Sun's Heir Death's Guardian: Phoebe's Third Gift
It was a peaceful night in Konohagakure no Sato. The shinobi on duty were vigilant over their guard. The citizens slept, worries and fears of combat suddenly rearing its head far from their minds. All was well...
...and then a babe's wails caused clouds to roll in overhead.
"Old gods above and below, why? Why do Hypnos and Morpheus elude her? Did I wrong them? Slight them in some manner?"
The groan came from a figure that had just laid down on his side of the bed. Heavy bags gathered under his eyes, which were a dulled sunny blue that had bleak golden suns surrounding their pupils. The bags pushed down over three whisker like marks on either of his cheeks. Golden hair sprouted from his head in erratic spikes, disheveled by a lack of care, due to his inability to make time for it. His bedclothes being a pair of orange running shorts and a loose white T-shirt. The exhausted poet reached out and gently jostled his bedmate, causing her to stir.
"Hm...wha's wrong?" Two electric blue eyes blinked open for a moment, but closed as the owner rolled onto her side, facing him. She, like him, had unruly hair, but it was a jet black. Her decency was kept by a punk band shirt and a pair of his boxers. She grunted when he jostled her again. "Whiskers, I swear..."
"It's your turn, Lia-chan," Naruto mumbled, half his face buried into his pillow.
"No...'M sleeping." Thalia pulled the covers up further, as if shielding herself from the thought of rising from her slumber. "I just had a baby..."
"That was six months ago. Your turn." He grunted.
"Whiskers...!" she whined.
"Ugh...gods, fine!" Naruto sighed heavily and pushed himself up. He rubbed at his face as he left to tend to his loud offspring. "Gods...What's one more day without sleep after a week-long patrol over in Iwa's mountains?"
"You're the besht, babe." Thalia's sleep-induced slurs called after him. She snuggled into her pillow. "Lohve you."
"Yeah, yeah, I love you, too..." Naruto shambled down the hall, his shoulders slumped and his feet dragging along the floor. He stopped at the door that was marked with the Uzumaki swirl and pushed it open. He was granted a swell of adrenaline when a massive bellow of wind greeted him, nearly knocking him from his feet.
"Stupid...wind...blessing..." Naruto grumbled, cursing Aeolus' blessing on Thalia - his gift to her for her convincing her father to finally turn him into a God - for its affect on his daughter. The blond man rushed into the room, spartan of any decorations, and stopped at the hand carved crib. He reached in and picked up the wailing lass, cradling her to his chest.
"Shh, Hime...shh..." Naruto half-heartedly bounced his baby in his arms and fought a yawn. He smiled sleepily down at her and brushed the wisps of hair from her face. "Joanie, shh. Touchan's here. Daddy's got'cha."
Joan Anne Uzumaki, the Legacy of Zeus and Apollo, had inherited her ancestors' lungs. The winds in the village picked up outside and Naruto went to the window, shutting it with one hand. He hummed and yawned as he paced around the room, trying to quiet the babe. He patted her rump and found her free of any late night incidents. She had been fed formula on his last excursion to the nursery.
"Why aren't you sleeping, baby?" Naruto sighed. He placed a hand on her head and closed his eyes. "Ask, I'm so tired. I can't properly request your help. Please..."
A beat passed.
Naruto hung his head and resumed rocking Joan in his arms. Asclepius' lack of response wasn't anything new, but he thought his mortal turned godly brother would sympathize with his plight. Jerk was so getting a propelled water balloon full of yak piss in a OPS box in the near future.
"Oh, gods, why?" Naruto leaned against the wall and his head tilted up to stare at the roof. "Hera, help me, give me some insight. Please, tell me why she isn't sleeping..."
Joan's wails only seemed to increase.
"Okay, okay, I'll stop asking them," Naruto said. He bent his head down and pressed his lips against her head in a gentle kiss. He went back to rocking her and began to hum The Five Stairsteps' "O-O-H, Child" in an attempt to put her to sleep. After repeating the song two times, it seemed that someone out there noticed his problem and gave him a small hand.
"Finally," he sighed. Joan looked at him with reddened and watery eyes, which caused him to smile sadly at her. "I know, Hime. I know."
Joan snuffled and hiccuped. Naruto hummed again as he repositioned her to ensure she didn't accidentally swallow any spit-up. Her fit dwindled down and he held her for a good hour while she slept.
He waited another hour before he tried to put her back in the crib.
He was halfway back to his room, debating whether his sores and aches would be worth sleeping on the floor then and there, when it started again. He pressed the base of his palms into his eyes.
Now he wanted to cry.
Too tired to turn around, he continued walking until his knee hit the edge of the bed. He fell forward, face first. Then he reached out and grabbed Thalia's arm.
"Lia...Hon...babe..." Naruto grunted at each jostle. Fed up, he gave a final rough shove. "Thalia!"
"What!?"
"Your. Turn."
