Chapter 7: Restless

~QOoOQ~

He didn't know what to say. The horror was still clear on his face and his fingers were gripping the steering wheel tightly. He felt stupid. He couldn't say a word after her confession. He sighed and rubbed his cheek, "So the story Levy told us about the little girl…?"

"Was me." She nodded and turned to look at him, "There were minor things she missed however that is all that was written down in the files she took. My father had found me and took me in. I had nightmares for months, and even now I still get them from time to time."

"That's terrible." He couldn't imagine it. An intruder coming into her house. She was young. Too young to witness that. Nobody should have to witness what Lucy had. But she did. And she is still dealing with what she saw to this day. Nightmares haunting her. Memories following her. And now her assailant is shrouding her in his vindictiveness. "Is that why Laxus and you started to act weird when Levy brought up those files?" She nodded. It made him feel weak when he remembered the sick look on her face. Mavis was her face white. Similar to how she looked now, except there are tears staining her face.

Natsu wanted to know Lucy. He wanted to know the mystery that was his partner. She's reserved, analytical and refrains from conversation unless necessary. She's beautiful, personality is rough around the edges but pleasant the closer you are to her. She's strong, her strength mirroring Erzas at times and yet she is fragile. Just by looking at her or having a shallow-faced conversation with her, no one would be able to tell that she is intelligent and observant-two qualities that made her a top detective- and that she harbors a nightmare that continuously haunts her.

She was a mystery.

A mystery he wanted to solve.

"Where are we going?" Natsu snapped out of his thoughts when he heard the blonde confused voice. "We passed my apartment a while back…"

"Do you really think I'm going to let my partner spend the night alone when there's some psycho who just called her?" He briefly looked at her. "You must be crazy if you believed that."

"That sounds a bit suggestive Natsu…"

He laughed at her blushed cheeks and averted gaze, "What're you thinkin' Luce." He laughed louder when she turned away from him fully. "I want you to stay at my place for a little bit, I don't feel comfortable with you being home alone at night right now. I hope you understand where I am coming from." She nodded and he was slightly thankful she didn't attempt to argue.

She wouldn't have won either way.

oOoOoOo

After they arrived at his house, Natsu gave her a small tour to show her where she could find the bathrooms, kitchen, and his room and her own. He had tried to get her to drink some tea with him however she had dismissed his attempt at comforting her and opted for a shower before heading to bed. It was 2 AM and he couldn't sleep, how could he? Lucy may not have been his partner long however the secluded girl had grown on him immensely. He would like to consider her a close friend if she would let him.

"Natsu, why are you still up?" Lucy mumbled sleepily as she entered his living room where he could be found sitting on the couch, surrounded by files upon files of information. "What is all of this?" She picked up one of the folders closer to her feet and took a brief looking at the case files context, "Natsu, why are you looking at these?" They were all files about her mother's murder and her assault. Information about the house, time, date, year. Everything.

"If I'm going to be a good partner to you I need to know exactly what I am dealing with, I don't go into investigations blindly Luce. Especially not if it involves one of my family." She didn't dare comment on him calling her his family, she wouldn't argue with him. Not now. A spark was lit in her chest at his confession, "I don't want to miss anything."

"You can look over those files all you want Natsu, but the information on those sheets are pointless. They couldn't prove anything from the evidence they found." They hadn't found much. If not for the dead body of her mother and the ashes left behind from her house it would have been as if the night had never occurred. But it had. Oh Mavis, the blood.

"I know, whoever this person was, he was extremely smart." Natsu removed his glasses and set down the file he held in his hands. His hands were shaking slightly as he ran them through his hair. "Not one fingerprint or DNA sample was found. I can't believe how little evidence they found after this."

"Then don't believe it, but it is true."

"Luce-I didn't mean-" He sighed and looked up at her, she seemed so small at that moment. So vulnerable. So, not Lucy. "I didn't mean it in that way." Again, another sigh. Her eyes shifted. He couldn't read her, even now. She was unreadable. A mystery to him. He barely knew her. "It's just hard for me to understand how there was little to no DNA evidence left behind from such an erratic killing."

"Was it really erratic though?" She shifted. His eyes snapped to hers. She wouldn't look at him. Why wouldn't she look at him? "He deliberately came to my house and murdered my mother. He left me. It wasn't as if he was surprised that I was there. He knew. He knew everything before he came." She shifted again. Her eyes still averted and he desperately tried to meet her gaze.

"The crime was so violent though. Usually, that type of crime scene is caused by spontaneous murders."

She looked so distressed. "He knew Natsu. He knew I would come down that night. Knew my mother would be found by me." Her arms folded over her chest in a protective manner. "He knew everything, Natsu-Oh God the blood"

"Lucy…" He didn't know what to say. She looked so devastated. Afraid. Unsettled. He stood in front of her. She was murmuring, he couldn't understand. Her breathing was frantic, eyes haunted. Mavis he couldn't stand seeing her like this. "Lucy." She turned to look at him. Eyes snapping to meet his. Body shaking and face contorted with fear.

"Why was it me Natsu…?" She was crying now, a lump formed in his throat as he watched the tears roll down his partners face. He couldn't care less if she hated being touched as he pulled her by her arm into his chest and wrapped his arms around her frail body. She was shaking, he noted. "Why did he leave me?" She knew why, as did he. He left her as a warning. A way to inflict fear on those that heard her story. To leave a mark behind so someone would never forget him. He felt sick. His arms tightened and he breathed out a sigh into her hair.

"I'm not sure Luce." He tightened his grip again and pulled her closer, stroking her hair in an attempt to calm her down. "I really don't know. I promise I won't let anything happen to you though Lucy," he pulled away slightly to stare into her bleary eyes, red from crying. "I promise."

"How can you promise that Natsu?" Her hands rested on his chest, slowly tightening around the fabric of his shirt. "Why do you care so much about this? Why put in so much effort in reading the case files and reports about this?"

"Because Luce," he smiled, "You're family since you joined First Unit, and since you're my partner I want to make sure that you will be safe. I care about my Family, and that includes you Luce." She didn't say anything. Kept silent and leaned into him. Here face pushed into his chest and her arms wound around him. The only reason he knew she understood him was from her shaking coming to a stop and her body relaxing into him. She trusted his words. And honestly, that was all that he could ask for.

ALaViola: Ok so firstly, I would like to apologize again for my extended absence. That was ridiculously long. A year ago my father was diagnosed with myocardia, a heart condition which he developed because of a common cold that attacked his heart. I didn't think it was possible, but here we are. Not long after that, my dogs' health slowly started to deteriorate before one day when I got picked up from work, he was in the car, not wanting to eat anything, could barely breathe and his back legs had given out on him. We took him to an emergency vet hospital that night and were told he had developed the same heart condition that my dad has, however, we were too late and either way his passing was inevitable unless we had thousands for surgery that may not even work. So that night I had to say goodbye to my best friend. I was having a really difficult time with all of this, my dog was there from the day I got diagnosed with diabetes and he's been with me through every bad night I've had and I struggled with it a lot. I know to some people this seems a little dramatic but this is how I felt and even now it still hurts a lot to think about it, knowing that he had been suffering for so long up until that moment.

I am not discontinuing this story, I just won't be updating very frequently, I've gotten into my nursing program at my first choice college and I tend to take a lot of shifts at work so I can keep a fair amount for my savings. I will be discontinuing one of my stories as I don't enjoy writing for it any longer nor do have any idea on how to continue the story. It's not a popular story like Hell's Gate so it isn't well known however for those of you who read Scream's of the Past I apologize for not being able to continue it.

Love it? H
