Dallas, Texas
"JR, I see your sense of humour hasn't disappeared", eyeing the interior of the home she had once known so well, Jenna knew the attitude she had to portray, she needed to stay strong and aware, because getting sentimental too soon would interfere with her ability to fulfil whatever role JR had lured her back to Dallas to perform. Inside, she did feel some sentimentality, it was hard not to, standing where she was, years after she'd run and left it all behind; one day she might explore those feelings, not today though. Today was about feeling out the current situation in Dallas, seeing where she was needed and wanted and where she could potentially re-enter the scene. For now she'd let JR lead her exploration, she was interested in finding out exactly what he had planned; what she actually did with her life was her decision though, she'd lived long enough without the help of anyone named Ewing and she intended to keep it that way unless something really turned her head.
"Whatever do you mean Jenna?" grinning, as he knew exactly what she was alluding to, JR hospitably held her purse as she removed her coat. Laughing lightly at his attempt at feigning ignorance, she found it as easy as ever to talk to him, responding quickly to his question, "oh you know, drawing me into a long conversation about your life but neglecting to mention you'd bought and now live in my family home". Smirking as she spoke, she felt comfortable as he continued their conversation, even if the joke was at her expense. "Oh that, well I did mention Sue Ellen and I have a home of our own, the rest must have slipped my mind", making a hand motion to illustrate his point, it was hard to not smile, even if he was being smart with her. "Mm, you must be getting forgetful in your old age", pretending to pout as if she felt sorry for his aging self, she laughed out loud when he responded not in an offended manner but a cocky one, "we can't have everything now, can we? With my wit, charm, and brilliant mind for just about everything else, something's gotta give".
Tsking jokingly, she handed her coat to the maid and collected her purse from JR, turning her attention to the tall brunette who'd appeared at the foot of the stairs. She'd been out of Texas for a long time and it still somewhat surprised her that JR Ewing was married, but seeing the woman who apparently held the title of Mrs JR Ewing, things began to fit into place.
"Good afternoon, you must be Jenna; I'm Sue Ellen", striding toward her elegantly, JR's wife smiled and kept her eyes fixed on her, even when JR reached out to hook his arm around her waist. "Yes I am, how do you do?" nodding, she smiled back and studied the couple in front of her, they fit together nicely, though she guessed from what JR had told her previously that his close hold on his wife had multiple intentions, only one of which was purely related to his attraction to her. "Very well thank you. I'm pleased to have you here today", speaking formally, but naturally, Sue Ellen's spoken tone and chosen words didn't register as overly concerning or shy with Jenna as they'd both been raised with an understanding of polite society and while they were being introduced with the intention of becoming friends, they weren't actually friends, not yet.
"It's my pleasure. The way JR described you was intriguing and I just had to come and meet you myself", being honest, she could tell from the quick flash of confusion and possibly embarrassment in Sue Ellen's eyes that perhaps her situation wasn't something she particularly wanted being told to just anyone. JR had told her that his wife had asked for his help, but as a woman herself, she understood that what women said and men heard were often two different things. Considering that, an explanation about how lonely a life with only the DOA ladies as friends could be and the inference that she needed help having fun might not be what she had intended for him to tell everyone.
"It seems JR has a lot to say for himself, why don't we take a seat and see how much of it is actually true", managing to crack an amused smile after her initial thoughts passed, Sue Ellen was quick to initiate the next part of their social engagement, one Jenna had no problem going along with. Her willingness to follow came from her curiosity about the situation as a whole and as parts. Firstly, it was hard not to want to see what the rest of her family home now looked like and staying seemed to be a good way to find that out. Secondly though, she wanted to explore the same thing Sue Ellen did, she wanted to find out exactly how much of what JR had said was based in real life, and in that reality, where she fit in.
"I think that's my cue to leave. Sue Ellen, I'll see you tonight darlin', remember I'm playing squash with Jack after work so I'll be home later than usual", finding his voice again after letting his wife take the lead, JR seemed to be comfortable with how things were going and was likely eager to leave before the women started picking apart his comments. To Jenna, his presence at all had been a surprise and told her a few things about his and Sue Ellen's relationship, the least that he did truly care about his wife's happiness. Coming home on a Wednesday afternoon, lunch hour or not, just to ensure things began smoothly was an act of love and only added to the list of reasons why she herself was not afraid of the eldest Ewing son, he had a soft side and that could be tapped into if required. Observing Sue Ellen too, she could tell that although she might not have appreciated being described in terms that made her intriguing, she did appreciate her husband for doing something to help her, her eyes told that much. From what she could see, Jenna thought JR and Sue Ellen made a nice looking couple, not only that though, they seemed to understand each other; what she also knew though was that looks could be deceiving and she hadn't received a call from JR out of the blue for nothing, so trusting that everything was transparent would be naïve.
"Jenna, nice to see you again, back where you belong if I do say so myself", winking, JR laughed at his own joke before nodding at her turning his attention back to his wife, kissing Sue Ellen goodbye and finally leaving the room. Shaking her head, Jenna smirked, JR was playing games with what he had to know was an emotional experience for her, but she didn't hate him for it, after all, she couldn't say she didn't expect it from him. "Shall we?" nodding at the tea set laid out in the formal living room, Sue Ellen waited for her to walk and take a seat before following and sitting herself, officially opening the second part of their social engagement.
To be continued…
