Dallas, Texas
"JR", speaking his name breathlessly, JR didn't realise his wife wasn't simply expressing her impassioned desire until he felt her pull away from him, breaking their kiss and pushing against his chest lightly from beneath him. Rolling onto his back, he watched her intently as she stretched over him, her long hair and bare skin brushing against him as she reached across the bed to open her nightstand drawer.
Studying her form, he ran his hand down her back, his fingers inching their way down her body, disrupted only by her moving again, readjusting to straddle him.
Reaching his arm out to bring her closer to him, intending to pick up where they'd left off, he frowned in confusion when she put her hand out again, separating them once more.
"Sue E…" starting to say her name, he stopped when she showed him the small square packet in her hand, asking him, "would you use this?"
Taken completely by surprise, he asked the first thing that came to his mind, "what for?"
"You know what for", responding, she shied away from answering the question.
"That's not what I'm asking and you know it", he wasn't stupid, nor was she, they both knew the primary purpose of using protection, what he wanted to know was why she'd felt the need to hide her feelings about the subject until now, arguably the very last moment she had to make her feelings known. Of course, he knew she wasn't keen on having another baby just yet, she'd made that quite clear, but they'd not yet had the conversation progress to what they were going to do about her feelings, she hadn't wanted to focus on it, until now.
"Last month wasn't a good time and I don't think this month is either, emotionally for me or for the family", restating what he knew from her meltdown in their bathroom and subsequent conversations, she didn't offer any reason for why she'd chosen that exact moment to open the topic for discussion again. What had happened to Bobby's family had shaken her, which was understandable, but she was going about her feelings on the subject in an incredibly unhelpful way.
"You didn't think discussing this this before now was important?" all too aware of the position they were in, he raised his voice. It might have been funny had he not been so annoyed; he didn't care if he had to cover himself to make her happy tonight, it wouldn't have been his preferred option but it was better than not following through with how far along they were into their evening, he was annoyed though and he was sure that was obvious.
"I didn't know how", whispering, she shifted her weight and brushed her hand against his chest, reminding him again how inopportune now was to be having any sort of serious conversation.
"You didn't know how? Sue Ellen, how long have we been married?" moving uncomfortably, attempting to sit up and create a little more distance between them, unable to think straight with her astride him, he could hear how gruff he sounded, but that was about right for how he felt at present.
"I'm sorry, I just, I know you think it's irrational that I feel the way I do. I want to be married to you and enjoy our marriage but I don't want to deal with introducing anything else into our relationship at the moment. Is that so hard to understand?" apologising, she explained again what he already knew, leaving out the important part about why they were having the discussion about what to do about it now, moments from taking their foreplay further.
"No, it's not, but…" starting to speak, he winced when she moved again, pulling a sheet up around her.
"You're upset", leaning into him, almost everything about the way she was behaving led him to believe she was completely oblivious to her inopportune timing, not that he understood how that could be seeing as she was mere inches from sitting in his lap.
"Now isn't really the time to have a serious discussion", taking advantage of her position, he lay back down, hooking his arm around her waist to bring her with him; he was in no state to talk and she obviously needed some reminding of why that was.
Finally resuming what they'd started, his mood improved considerably as she naturally moved with him, quickly back in exactly the position he wanted her in, not a moment too soon.
Sliding his leg between hers, he readjusted his angle slightly, their embrace not breaking until the moment they made the contact he so desperately craved.
"JR!" breathlessly pushing against his chest again, separating from him again, the physical the loss of contact after so much teasing caused him to swear under his breath.
"Please", sitting up, she turned and found what she was looking for, tore the packet open and surprisingly, attempted to go ahead and get things done herself, again apparently having no idea just how close to the edge he was.
Making a guttural sound as she touched him, her soft hand against him was about all he could take and he knew that he'd soon be useless if she didn't hurry up.
"You don't need to be so aggressive", apparently mistaking his murmuring for a complaint, she stopped all movement, doing absolutely nothing good for his attitude.
He hadn't been feeling aggressive until she'd mentioned it, annoyed and worked up, but not aggressive; now that she'd accused him of being that way though, he felt it only appropriate to respond in turn. "How do you expect me to act? I'm blindsided by your passiveness. If you wanted to talk, we had plenty of time to before we got here, and if you wanted us to do things this way I damn well wish you'd asked me earlier, it would have been a hell of a lot easier".
"I wasn't trying to be passive", not quite matching his level of aggression, she was close.
"No, you just are!" on edge and pained by his physical situation he lashed out at her.
"Now I'm upset", looking down, avoiding eye contact, she visibly deflated, causing him to instantly regret what he'd said.
"Sue Ellen", whispering her name, he reached out to touch her, attempting to apologise and bring her back to his side, without much luck.
"No, don't", shaking her head, she got off the bed, refusing to listen to him when he objected to her actions.
"Darlin'…" trying again, he couldn't quite believe it when she grabbed her robe and walked towards the door.
"Sue Ellen", changing tone again, he was irritated now. She couldn't leave, well, she could, and she was, but he didn't want her to. He couldn't exactly chase after her though, not in the state he was in, a state he was reminded of with every movement he made.
To be continued…
