Dallas, Texas
Looking up as the two Ewing men walked in to her living room from the foyer, Sue Ellen was fairly sure about what she saw, although Jenna hadn't said a word about any recent changes.
"What was that?"
"What?"
Waving her hand in Jack's direction, she elaborated on what she was referring to, "that look that Jack just gave you."
"Oh, that." Blushing, Jenna couldn't hide that there was something to the interaction.
Interested in what had changed recently compared to the months of casual flirting between the two, she encouraged Jenna to continue, "go on."
"It finally happened."
"You two went to bed together?"
Assuming that Jenna wasn't making something out of nothing, she couldn't say she was surprised that it had happened, just that it had happened now. She'd gotten the impression that now that Jenna was single and technically so was Bobby, her friend was single-minded, however that didn't appear to be the case.
Looking away from her, fixing her eyes on Jack, Jenna answered the question, "we did."
"And?"
Returning her attention to her, Jenna gushed, "and it was great, not that I expected anything less, we've been playing a game of cat-and-mouse since we met and the emotional attraction was already strong. I have no complaints."
She didn't get the feeling that Jenna's positivity was coming entirely from a place of emotional fulfilment, but it didn't particularly matter either, she could admit to herself that her own attraction to JR wasn't entirely emotional.
"When did this happen?"
"Thanksgiving night. I'm giving Bobby time to sit with his feelings, but I still have needs, and Jack was there, happy to fulfil them…"
Laughing softly at the way Jenna expressed herself, she couldn't blame her for how she felt or what she'd done. Jenna was her own person, as was Jack, and although what they did together did affect others in the family, in this instance it really hadn't. Both Jenna and Jack had stayed thanksgiving night at her and JR's home, but even then, until now she'd been in the dark about what had occurred under her own roof.
"So, what now?" curious, she dug for more information. She couldn't imagine Jenna would want to get into a relationship with Jack when she was still in a way pursuing Bobby, but then again she had just spoken about having needs and although independent there was a longer-term need for stability.
"It's casual, we've already agreed that. Jack travels too much to want to be tied down and I think he understands that I'm playing a waiting game with Bobby."
Listening to Jenna, she understood where she was coming from. Jack was temporary, but not so temporary that she was already done with him. Bobby was the man she was waiting for but she had enough empathy and understanding to realise that now wasn't the time to push him. In the meantime, she had a life to live and she was happy to have fun with Jack.
"I guess that's fine, it's not like you and Bobby are a couple."
"No, we're really not. We're friends, I'd love to be more but all he'll let me give him at the moment is emotional support, he still barely touches me." Reiterating what she'd told her a couple of weeks earlier, Jenna sounded tired. She obviously craved more than she was getting from Bobby and had more to give, so while not perfect, hopefully being with Jack would bring her some comfort and happiness.
"There's a reason for that."
Having seen how Bobby had been on thanksgiving with her own eyes, she knew he wasn't ready to move ahead with anything romantic, so she really did understand why Jenna might want or need to move ahead with her own life.
"I know, and I'm happy to wait for him to figure out what he feels and how he wishes to proceed, but in the meantime…"
Understanding Jenna's perspective, she didn't dwell on why she was doing what she was doing, instead asking her something a little different. "Do you think this is sustainable then?"
"What?" clearly confused, Jenna asked her for clarification.
"Having Bobby and Jack."
She understood Jenna well enough and she supported her doing whatever made her happy, but she wasn't completely naïve, she could see that perhaps things weren't as simple as Jenna made them out to be. Bobby was emotionally unavailable and Jack was happy to keep things casual but how long could the entire thing last before someone decided enough was enough and things had to change?
Considering it for a brief moment, Jenna didn't seem overly concerned about anything, answering her, "I think so, but if Bobby doesn't like it then the power is in his hands. He didn't like JR arranging somewhere for me to live, perhaps this will make him acknowledge that he's not fond of having another man fulfil my physical needs either."
"He was fine with Richard being in your life", playing devil's advocate, she knew that a lot had been different when Jenna had been with Richard, firstly, Bobby had been married to Pam, and secondly, Richard wasn't Bobby's cousin.
Chuckling, Jenna pushed back on her argument. "That's debatable. He was the reason Richard and I broke up, then he left me to sleep in a cold bed at night; I dealt with that for a while but I'm sick of it now."
Gathering that Jenna's intentions weren't as simple as needing companionship, that she perhaps did want to make Bobby jealous, her stomach lurched. She'd done things herself to make sure JR's attention was on her and no one else, but not quite to the extent Jenna might push things to.
"Are you sure you know what you're doing? You're not going to ruin a potential relationship with Bobby by rushing him or indicating to him that you're Jack's girl and therefore off limits for him to pursue you?"
Shaking her head, Jenna smiled and brushed off her concerns. "You worry too much."
Knowing she did have a tendency to worry, she couldn't quite tell whether this was something she was overanalysing. She didn't think it was, but then again, it wasn't her actually her problem, so it didn't truly matter. "It's your life."
"Yes, it is."
Increasingly unsure about the game Jenna was playing, she decided not to involve herself too deeply, although she was already somewhat involved now that she knew what was going on.
To be continued…
