Dallas, Texas
Kneeling on the cold grass, Cliff looked over to his side at his brother-in-law and then back to where his sister, father and nephew lay now.
Breaking the peace surrounding the cemetery, Bobby's voice cracked as he spoke. "We're both here. The circumstances aren't any brighter but I hope you'd be happy to see us as we are now."
Just as emotionally affected as Bobby was, he had a more difficult time showing his sadness, instead naturally falling back on humour to deal with uncomfortable situations. "We are here Pammy, and you were right, Bobby isn't so bad."
Chuckling at his comment, Bobby's mood seemed to brighten temporarily.
"We've brought you some flowers, Will too."
Laying the two bouquets down, Bobby acknowledged his son, Willard John Ewing. Had Will not been born in August, today would have been his due date. It was a cold December morning outside, but within the walls of the Dallas Memorial maternity ward he imagined nothing of the sort mattered, that had life been different the moment the healthy baby boy made his entrance into the world the changing seasons would have been the last thing on anyone's mind.
"We miss you, every single day", speaking from his heart, he meant what he said. He had Maggie and Jimmy but other than that, he was the last of his family. He missed Pam, he missed having someone who understood him, who he could call to talk to and would listen, and he missed sharing her life. She'd married Bobby and things had gotten complicated, but now that she was gone he would have done anything to bring her back, mess and all.
"I love you", his voice cracking again, Bobby expressed his feelings.
He believed Bobby did feel the way he said he did, he hadn't necessarily at first, but it seemed obvious now. There was more to Bobby and Pam's marriage than just a Barnes and a Ewing coming together to stir up controversy or bring some excitement to their lives, they had truly felt something for each other.
"I didn't say it enough when we were face-to-face but I love you too Pammy." Regretting how often they had just behaved as siblings did, feeling what they did without saying it, he told her now, he loved her, and he hoped she was there to hear him say it.
Falling silent, they knelt together for a long while, reflecting on where they were in relation to what had happened.
Pam hadn't wanted to fall pregnant so quickly following her marriage to Bobby, however she had, and as scared and unsure she was about the entire situation he knew she would have made an excellent mother. Although their own mother had left long ago, Pam had grown up to be a caring, nurturing person, she'd always shown concern for him and Digger and he knew she would have eventually come to love being a mother to her own son too.
"Say hello to daddy for me, and give my nephew a big hug."
Hopeful that there was a happier place for Pam, Digger and Will now that they were no longer an active part of his life, the thought of his family gathered together without him made him both happy and sad. He was the last of the Barnes family because he would never have children of his own now that he knew he was a neurofibromatosis carrier; what he did have though were his memories and those would stay with him forever.
"Pamela, please, if mama is there with you, tell her we love her and miss her too, and give our son the love I would have."
Making a request of his own, Bobby waited a few seconds before telling Pam he loved her and Will again and then stood up, turned slowly and walked away.
Saying his own goodbyes, Cliff reassured his sister and father that he'd be back to visit again soon, then followed Bobby's path.
"Bobby?" calling out to his brother-in-law, he caught up to him as they reached the parking lot.
"I meant it, you're a good guy", telling him what he'd come to realise, he didn't know what he hoped to get out of it, but he didn't want things to end badly between them. There had been too much negativity and heartache in their lives to leave things unsaid that could just as easily be said.
"For a Ewing?" smirking, it was obvious to him that Bobby was joking, which was a good sign.
"That, amongst other things. You can't blame me for having concerns with the marriage, but maybe those concerns were a little too strong." Considering that he hadn't even known Pam had been seeing Bobby Ewing, to find out she'd gone and married him was not what he'd expected, and given her history with rushed marriages and their family history with the Ewings, he'd certainly been sceptical that it was a good thing, but he was happy he'd been proved wrong. Bobby loved Pam and Pam had loved Bobby, he didn't doubt that at all.
Nodding, Bobby agreed, "I understand. I wasn't exactly raised to think marrying a Barnes was a good idea, and I can see why Pamela and I eloping might have come as a shock to everyone, Barnes and Ewing alike."
Wanting to confirm there was no bad blood between them, he asked, "truce?"
"I think we came to an agreement a long time ago, but we'll make it official." Smiling, just like the friendly, well-liked man Pam had always said he was, Bobby held his hand out to shake, which he did.
Letting go, Bobby ended their discussion with a companionable, "I'll see you around."
Nodding, he agreed. Dallas wasn't tiny, but it wasn't huge either. He couldn't really see himself ever just spending time with Bobby as friends, they didn't have all that much in common he didn't think, but they were likely to see each other around town at some point and now that they were on friendly terms, he didn't feel anything but good about that.
All the years their families had spent being hostile to each other felt like wasted time; Digger was gone, Pam was gone, Will was gone and Miss Ellie was gone, all for no good reason. No one else was going to lose their life to the Barnes/Ewing feud, not now that he was the only one left.
To be continued…
