25. Chapter 25: Caught Red Handed

Chapter 25: Caught Red-handed

(In Saena's apartment)

Satoshi: What do you know, that I don't?

Todoh: Follow me!

Kyoko looked down nervously … then looked in the direction where the bedroom is

Todoh: Kyoko-chan … just let her be … let her calm down a little, ok?

Kyoko looked at Todoh and nodded

Todoh: Just Pay attention to the dish cooking in the oven for me … I'll be back shortly!

Kyoko: ok … I will

Todoh leaves the apartment with his brother … leaving Kyoko, Ren, and Remi all alone

Ren: Are you ok?

Kyoko: I'm not sure what to do now …. What can I do, Ren?!

Ren hugged Kyoko and said: we shouldn't take any actions for now … in this complicated situation, it's better to wait for the adults to decide, ok?

Kyoko held onto Ren clothes as she was frustrated with this whole situation, coupled with her feeling powerless

Todoh: use your brain for once! … why would someone spy on someone else when they have a legal battle going on?!

Satoshi: I get that part … but you told me they are losing it either way … so what's the point?!

Todoh: That old hag is convinced she can still win … maybe she's hoping she can get something out of Saena herself … despite doing all the digging in the background

Satoshi: like she's trying to catch her red-handed or something

Todoh: that's a possibility … but she went too far! … I'm not going to be silent about this!

Satoshi: and what can you do?!

Todoh grits his teeth in frustration, because he knew he couldn't do much … It's all in Saena's hands … and he knew that she didn't want to go there

Satoshi: you … what's your relationship with them … the mother-daughter pair?

Todoh: I'm Mogami's coworker … you already know that!

Satoshi: just that?!

Todoh: what do you mean?

Satoshi: I'm your brother … I can see through you easily … the way you treat her is much more than just a coworker … or even a friend … you care deeply about them

Satoshi nodded and sat down … he reopened his laptop to check for further information … once he found the information, he said: They were installed 2 weeks ago, Tuesday noon to be exact

Kyoko: Wasn't that, the day of the meeting?!

Todoh looked at Kyoko and said: right! … you were away for the onsite filming trip until very late … they had more than enough time to come install them while you were both away!

Kyoko: Come to think of it … that's exactly when I started feeling like I'm being watched … I just wasn't sure then!

Ren: So, they set them up? … But, how would they know that Kyoko wouldn't be home?

Satoshi: Do they know about her occupation?

Todoh: Certainly … but, I think it's safe to assume they thought you might be out for school if not for work!

Kyoko: but then, who installed them, if they were in the meeting with Todoh-san and Mom?

Satoshi: probably the people she hired … those Cameras are famous in the Black Market … I guess they might have contact with some shady people!

Todoh: Can you figure out who they are?

Satoshi: Even better … I can easily set up a trap to catch them … I will black out the Camera's and mute them … when Miyasaki-san opens the camera to watch, she won't be able to see or hear anything … so she will call them to fix the issue! … I can simply track the call and catch them in the act!

Todoh: One issue remains! … you said they can record … what if they are recording right now? … they will know we found the camera's and won't fall for your trap

Satoshi: No worries! … I can delete those recordings from here … plus … if someone was watching when we first found them, they could have shut off the other cameras but they didn't, so there is a good chance no one knows we found them yet … I'll take my chances!

Kyoko checks on the dish and says: It's ready! … (she takes it out of the oven)

Todoh: I'll go check on her …

Kyoko nodded quietly

Satoshi observed Kyoko's and Todoh's behavior … He figured that Kyoko and Todoh have a good relationship, since they understood each other well

Todoh knocked on the door of the bedroom and said: We need to talk … but first, Dinner is ready!

Saena sighed, then got up and opened the door slightly

Todoh pointed to the bathroom and then said: We'll set up the table … (he then walked back to the Kitchen and smiled

Kyoko smiled back and nodded again

Saena went to the bathroom to wash her face … she took a few deep breaths before leaving the bathroom heading to the kitchen with her usual expression plastered on her face

By then the table was set and ready … they all sat down and started eating

Todoh: This is great … Great choice Kyoko-chan!

Kyoko: It turned out better than I expected … right?!

Ren: Yeah … it took longer in the oven … but it turned out great … it's delicious!

Satoshi: I like both dishes … they are both Amazing! … thank you so much for inviting me!

After finishing their food, both Kyoko and Ren got up and started cleaning up

Saena finished soon after and got up to help them … she looked at Ren and said: You ate well this time around!

Ren: Ah well … I guess I'm trying to fix a bad habit of mine! … besides the food was tasty, which helps a lot!

Kyoko looked a little confused and asked: Did you eat together before?

Ren: When you were hospitalized … We got some food, but I couldn't finish my meal

Kyoko crossed her arms and said: why didn't you eat it all?! … didn't I tell you that you have to eat well?! … what happened to the promise you made back in …..

Ren: I thought that was about the 8 meals I needed to record!

After they finished cleaning, they were all seated together again

Satoshi informed Saena of his plan regarding catching the people who entered her placed and installed the cameras… then he asked: Are you ok with that?

Unsure, Saena: do I even have a say in that?

Todoh: yeah … they violated your privacy by coming in here and installing cameras, behind your back … even if they were asked to do it … it's against the law, so you have every right to press charges against them

Satoshi: So, … are you interested in pressing charges … they will face other charges too, depending on who they are and what they do … but you can make things much worse for them, so what do you say?

Saena looked at Kyoko and said: what do you think, … you felt being watched, so you should have a say in this matter as well!

Kyoko: well … I don't want those people to get away with it … because … if they did this to us, they can do it to others as well … and aren't they from the black market … which is very dark and shady?

Ren: Aren't people in the black-market criminals anyway? … they should be punished for their actions … if they are caught then, more people will be protected eventually

Satoshi: Well, that debatable … some people in that dark hole are also victims to their life circumstances… but your right, the sooner they are caught, the more people can be protected!

Nervous, Saena looked down and asked: Is it possible to press charges against those who installed it … without implicating the people who ordered it?

Todoh: Mogami!

Kyoko looked at her mom and asked: you don't want to punish them?!

Saena: I already declared that I wouldn't press charges … I don't want to play her game!

Todoh: This isn't a game anymore! … she violated your privacy! … this isn't the first time she did something terrible! … she needs to be stopped … think again, if not for you, then for Kyoko's sake at least!

Kyoko: come to think of it … that old lady assaulted you before … and if I'm right! … she assaulted Todoh-san too!

Saena looked at Kyoko with a surprised look, saying: how?!

Todoh: let's get back to the main topic …

Kyoko: before we do that … can you at least tell me what happened to you, Todoh-san?

Todoh: Your completely right … that woman came with a bunch of eggs trying to make a scene … I didn't allow her to get Mogami, so I used myself as a shield

Kyoko: eggs?! … you got hurt by mere eggs?!

Ren: eggs shells are sharp, depending on how they break, … I do remember kids throwing eggs at cars and houses on Halloween … they don't do much damage, except for the mess they leave … but I did hear about them causing bruises depending on how hard they are thrown and the distance!

Hearing that his brother used his body to shield Saena was a huge indication of how his brother feels about her … Satoshi thought to himself (should I let him handle this on his own … or should I try to push them together?! … our parents would be happy if he finally found someone … but … what about her? … how does she feel about him?)

Todoh: Well, even I was surprised I got cut … but it doesn't matter … that women got a clear warning to not come to our office again … and since then we haven't seen her!

Kyoko: that person … he didn't even stop her?

Saena: She came alone!

Kyoko: oh … in any case … they are terrible people and I don't want anything to do with them

Ren looked at Saena and said: Excuse me … but can I ask you something … Mogami-san?

Saena: go ahead

Ren: You said earlier that you won't press charges … was that regarding what he did in the past? … or is it for anything he did or might do in the future? … Moreover … you said you won't press charges against that man … but … in this case, it's his mother who did the spying, right?

Saena looked at Kyoko once again and said: do you mind if I don't press charges? … I frankly don't want to deal with them … whether it concerns the law or not … but if you're against that, I would reconsider … since this involves you too

Kyoko: I understand why you don't want to… she might be trying to get us to get involved to make her presence bigger … however … when would you consider pressing charges?

Saena thought a little bit … she clenched her fist and said: If not pressing charges would make her go back to the US faster … then that's what I would do

Todoh: what if pressing charges would push her to leave … she would try to avoid getting involved with the police … so maybe she would run back to her country if you actually press charges

Satoshi: I'm not sure about that … the moment charges are pressed against her, she can be banned from flying … and detained right away … frankly, the Japanese law isn't kind to foreigners!

Still unsure … Saena felt stuck … she agreed with Satoshi because he's more knowledgeable in that department, but she also thought that Todoh had a point: in that case … can't we just threaten her?

Satoshi: I can do the threatening … it would be bad if you did it yourself!

Todoh: No, it won't … you can both do it … so she can recognize we are dead serious about this!

Kyoko: I think that would do … if she realizes that we won't tolerate her actions any longer, she might stop

Ren: I'm not sure about that … for her as an American … she might think she's above the law with her money … it happens in the US too … some people do crazy things and if they have the money they can get away with it … I'm just worried she might resolve to worse tactics

Satoshi: You're not wrong … but … her money won't do much here! … she might get away with a few things using her money … but in Japan, it's not that easy!

Todoh: when would the law take over and no longer require Mogami to take action?!

Satoshi: well … if she commits a heavy crime … like … kidnapping or worse … but as long as you two stay around people you trust you'll be fine!

Saena looked at Todoh and thought (he really wants to get them for this … I don't blame him … I'm very upset … but I truly worry that I would trigger her to do worse things if I do press charges … I have a terrible feeling about that)

Noticing Saena's intense staring at him, Todoh asked: what's wrong?!

Saena looked down, but said nothing

Todoh: Mogami?

Saena emotions run wild and she confess: I just have a bad feeling about pressing charges … it's not only that I don't want to deal with her … I just feel uneasy about doing so … so perhaps we can just stick with the earlier plan?

Todoh: alright … let's let Satoshi deal with them this time … and we'll give them a clear threatening warning … is that ok with everyone?

Kyoko: I'm ok with that!

Satoshi: Fine by me

Saena: I agree with that

Ren remained silent however … he didn't feel like he had the right to agree or disagree

Todoh looked at Ren expecting an answer from him

Ren looked at Kyoko with a confused look then said: you want me to give my opinion?

Todoh: Sure, you helped find the cameras… you're as involved as we are!

Although he was still unsure, Ren said: sounds like a good plan … I hope it goes well

However deep down, he wasn't so sure, because of the dream he had earlier … he would prefer if they took harsher actions … but he understood that even if that would be more appropriate it might affect them negatively … so he hoped deep down that this decision was the best course of action at this time

The rest of the night went by with a few chats… and ended with Satoshi, Todoh, and Ren leaving together… The two brothers teased Ren a tad bit about how close he and Kyoko are, before arguing with each other about Todoh's feelings for Saena … somehow the discussion changed directions, as Todoh advised his brother to call Kyoko as Kyoko-chan, just to piss the Miyasaki's off, then they laughed about it, … leaving Ren confused but happy that those two men are supportive of Kyoko and Saena, and hoped everything will go as they planned

Kyoko and Saena felt more comfortable since the Cameras were removed … They discussed some of the things they planned for Saturday and agreed on their separate plans

(Next Day – Saturday – Saena's Apartment)

In the early morning, Kyoko wakes up and swiftly gets out of bed … she opens the door to find Remi sitting in front of the door

Surprised, Kyoko: Wah! …

She quickly lowers her voice as she whispered: you surprised me … are you hungry?!

Remi meowed … so Kyoko thought (does she understand me … do I have special powers that allow me to communicate with animals?!) … she giggled denying that idea and thought (that might have been something I would assume, if Corn was still a fairy … but, I prefer it this way! … we're real people working really hard to become legendary actors … I'm pretty sure Kuon will be one very soon … but I'm still a newcomer … I can't get cocky and think I'm any good as of yet … I need to prove myself worthy!)

Kyoko opens a cabinet and takes out a small can … she opens it and scoops half of it in Remi's food dish and says: here … have your first meal

She watched her kitten slowly approach her food … first, she smelled it …then Remi started eating her food happily

Kyoko smiled and got up … putting away the can for Remi's second meal later that night … she then started preparing breakfast for herself and her mother

Saena wakes up and joins Kyoko for breakfast … they both confirm with one another about their plans for the day and Kyoko swiftly gets up to get changed and head out for the day

She does remind her mother to feed Remi the second at the planned time they set … and she proceeds to leave with a happy smile

Both Mother and daughter were upset about the cameras found in their apartment… but since they are no longer there … they felt more comfortable … therefore they were more cheerful and motivated for the day

Walking into the parking lot, Kyoko spots Yoshiro's car and walks towards it with a cheerful smile … making Yashiro happy … because he was worried about her since yesterday

Kyoko: Good Morning

Yashiro: Good Morning … how are you today?!

Kyoko: I'm great! … Today will be a good day … I'm sure!

Yashiro: Glad to hear that … you seem very cheerful! … did something good happen?

Kyoko: ah! … yes … I adopted a kitten yesterday!

Surprised, Yashiro asked: Really? … that's unexpected … I didn't know you liked pets … moreover … your mom …

Kyoko: well … I'm fond of them …I just never got the chance to have any … honestly … it all went so fast in an unexpected way!

Yashiro: how?!

Kyoko: well … after the hospital visit, my mom and I walked in the park next door and when it started raining we found this poor little kitten in a box … so we took it in … our apartment allows small pets and cats so … we decided to keep it!

Yashiro: oh! … I'm glad you found that cat … yesterday was a terribly gloomy day … although it was supposed to be sunny … it rained almost all night!

Kyoko: really … the rain stopped before sunset around our area!

Yashiro: lucky … anyway … did you name it yet?!

Kyoko: Yes … We called her Remi!

Yashiro: Remi … Remi … that's an interesting choice … I like it!

Kyoko: do you want to see her?!

Yashiro: Sure!

Kyoko carefully chooses a picture of Remi on her own … among the countless pictures she snapped of both Ren and Remi together

Yashiro: ah! … she's so cute! … Remi suits her well!

Kyoko: Right! … I'm so glad I found this name … I struggled to choose one!

Yashiro: let me guess … you thought of giving her a princess or fairy name!

A little annoyed, but embarrassed, Kyoko grumbles: am I that predictable?!

Yashiro laughs and says: well … you tend to love those things, so it's kind of expected … don't worry I'm not teasing you … I think it's cute that you still like those things!

Shocked, Kyoko: still?!

Yashiro: what I mean is … not many people your age like …. Never mind me … I should just stop! … Kyoko-chan … I don't think it's wrong to like them … it's part of your life and if you love them … then that's perfectly fine … because it gives you happiness and that's what's important!

Excited, Kyoko asked: You think so?!

He thought to himself (I almost committed a sin and hurt Kyoko … I should be more careful with my words)

Kyoko browsed her photos and smiled happily … while looking at a cute picture of Ren and Remi

Yashiro: ah … by the way … did the doctor give you a clean sheet of health?!

Kyoko: hmm … it wasn't really a checkup … it was more of an update about some tests

Yashiro figured that Kyoko might not want to talk about it … so he let it go … then asked: well … did you tell your mother about the watching thing?

Kyoko: yeah … and we actually found cameras!

Stunned, Yashiro asks: you did! … who put them?!

Kyoko: Well … it's them … that old lady specifically! … we don't know if her son is involved … but the police will take care of that matter!

Yashiro: How Rude of her … doesn't she know that people have the right to their privacy in their own home?!

Kyoko: I don't think she cares … if that man was willing to break the law 18 years ago … I won't be surprised if they do it again … such lawless people … I hate them!

Yashiro: I'm sorry you had to go through that … I'm glad those cameras were found and the police are taking care of it!

Kyoko: yeah, me too!

(In the Grad-Jewel Hotel)

Nanami woke up early in the morning so she can resume her watching spree … however she was faced with an error … that camera no longer showed a picture… and no audio was heard … she tried to play with the settings … but to no avail

She called the guys whole helped her install the camera's and set up, to talk to them, asking them to fix the issue … they told her they will send a guy out to see what's the issue … but then the phone line was cut short …and she was left questioning if she was being scammed

Shortly after, there was a knock on the door, so she thought (they came this fast?!)

However, … she was surprised with a familiar face on her door

The man asked: look familiar?!

Stunned, Nanami: You?!

Satoshi: so, you were watching yesterday! … you missed the best part though … what a shame!

Curious, Nanami asked: what best part?!

Satoshi: You have been caught red-handed!

Faking ignorance, Nanami questioned: what the hell are you talking about?!

Satoshi: We played scavenger hunt and found all six of the cameras you order to be installed in Mogami-san's place … your friends … they're not coming … since they're on a once in a lifetime field trip to … guess where!

Nanami: I don't care!

Satoshi: you're boring! … but you know, they can use a companion … I'm sure you'll find some common ground!

Fuming, Nanami said: what the hell!

Satoshi: You committed a list of crimes you know … first you contacted the black market to enlist them into doing illegal activities like installing cameras in someone else's property … on top of that, you have an ongoing case with them … which makes your actions even worse … are prepared to face the consciousness

Nanami: that was my son's idea … he wanted to see his daughter, so I helped him! … does this make me a bad mother?!

Satoshi: yea! … pretty much … committing a crime will always equal bad in my books!

Nanami: How dare you! … you're harassing me … I'm an old lady! … I thought japan respected the elderly … but I guess they just like to glorify themselves to the west … you people are a bunch of fabricators … how pathetic!

Satoshi: so … you're not Japanese?!

Nanami: I might be Japanese-looking! … But I'm an American who's loyal to my land!

Satoshi: huh?! … a nationalist … but, this might bite you really bad … because when foreigners do something illegal … they get punished severely … and since you're not a Japanese citizen … this will be more fun~!

Nanami: Are you blind?! … Don't I look Japanese to you!? …. I'm even speaking Japanese!

Saena took out some of her work papers and sat down in the living room … she placed the papers on the table, and got up to prepare some tea … she was tense and nervous, so she thought tea would help her relax a little … she sat back down and picked up her papers and tried to focus on her work

However, she was quickly distracted by a meow … she had seen Remi sleep in her bed … but now Remi was up and walking towards her

In Saena opinion, she didn't mind having that cat, if it can make Kyoko happy and ease their relationship … but she wasn't sure she can handle a cat living with them … she thought the cat was cute but preferred to keep her distance from it … since she never really dealt with pets before

She tried to ignore the meowing and focused on the papers in hand, but from the corner of her eyes, she could see Remi approaching her and meowing for attention

Thinking of a solution, she looked at the toys Kyoko bought for Remi and thought (if I throw her a toy, will she leave me alone? … but, she's not a dog, besides dogs would return the toy just for it to be thrown again … how do cats play anyway?)

The meowing stopped abruptly … so Saena sighed as she was relived and returned to her work, however, she suddenly saw Remi Jump towards her so she moved to the side trying to avoid her

A nervous Saena looked at Remi who stared back at her … unsure what to do, she decided to let the kitten do as she pleases as long as she's not hurting or damaging anything … she resumed reviewing her work, just to be interrupted yet again by Remi's paws climbing onto her lap

Saena panicked and said: what are you doing?!

However, she was swiftly ignored, … Remi climbed onto her lap and laid down, making Saena feel very uncomfortable

Staring down at the kitten sleeping in her lap, Saena froze, as she was unsure what to do … she couldn't ignore it, because she was simply scared any sudden movements would terrify Remi and cause her to attack

Saena sighed and tried to return to her work once again, she kept her arms up, holding her papers up in the air … making it hard for her to focus in such an uncomfortable position

A knock on the door made things even worse … as she was unable to get up and answer it … she looked at the kitten who slept in her lap comfortably and said: what do I do now?

Knock knock

Saena picked up her phone and called Todoh

Todoh: hey, you left already?

Saena: No … I'm still home … I just can't get to the door!

Concerned, Todoh hurled questions at her: are you ok? … are you hurt? … did something happen to you? … is your leg injured?!

Saena: I'm completely fine! … I just can't get up

Todoh interrupted her asking: how can you be ok if you can't get up?!

Saena: well, if you didn't interrupt me, I could've told you the reason!

Todoh: sorry, I was just worried!

Saena: sure … I'm still uncomfortable with the idea of holding her

Todoh: don't worry, you'll be able to do that soon … (he slowly picks Remi up and holds her in his arms … then he puts her down in her bed)

Saena picks up the needed file, puts it in her bag and they leave together

Saena and Todoh arrived early, and they were seated in a semi-private area of the café near the window … they chatted a little while they waited for their guests to arrive

Kioshi and Anna arrived at the location and walked to the café, passing Saena and Todoh who were already seated inside

Saena wasn't as stressed knowing Nanami won't be there … and let her guard down a little, … smiling as she talked to Todoh about different things, making her seem comfortable and content

Todoh was glad Saena was opening up to him and loved to see her smile, as she rarely did in the past few years … the only time she smiled was when she won a case … otherwise, she kept a poker face the majority of the time

Kioshi saw the smile on Saena face as he passed her … it bothered him that she was smiling at Todoh, a man he disliked quite lot

Anna addressed her husband before entering the café, saying: I would like you to behave alright?!

Kioshi looked at his wife and asked: why?! … do you think I will misbehave or something?!

Anna: you dislike Todoh-san … and I fear that will cause you to go head to head with him

Kioshi: I would never go physical against anyone!

Kioshi and his wife also bowed, then they took a seat in front of the pair who invited them to the café

A café employee came and handed them a menu and asked for their orders … Saena order green tea, while Todoh-san order black coffee, … Kioshi order espresso latte, and his wife ordered herbal tea … after he left … silence took over once again

Saena broke the silence saying: I believe you're aware that we found cameras in my apartment

Kioshi: yes, I'm aware … the police came today morning concerning that matter

Saena: I would like to assume you weren't aware of their presence, although I'm leaning on the opposite

Kioshi: I was aware of their presence … but only after they were installed … I never planned for that, and I told my mother that what she was doing was illegal

Saena: so, it's safe to assume you kept that knowledge to yourself, as to protect your mother from getting in trouble with the law

Kioshi: yeah … although I wasn't on the same page concerning that matter, I wasn't about to report her myself

Saena: since when were you aware of them?

Kioshi: since she showed me her monitor … she had some kind of setup, that was also connected to her tablet

Saena: and … you said you weren't ok with her idea … does that mean you haven't watched it?

Kioshi: well … if you want me to be honest, then I will say I did … but, I never went out of my way to watch it … I was always called to do so, by my mother … she knows what to say to get me interested … and last night, she sort of threatening me to do so, as I was trying my best to avoid watching!

Kioshi looked at Todoh with a displeased expression, but answered anyway, saying: I didn't tell my father about this whole situation, so he doesn't even know that you have a daughter … and I prefer to keep it that way, at least for now

Anna looked at her husband with a concerned look, as she wasn't aware that he was threatened

Saena kept her emotionless front, as she asked: was her purpose to find some kind of information about me and Kyoko, so she can use it against us?

Kioshi: you can say that …

Saena: and you were curious as to what you can find?

Kioshi: not really … perhaps I was curious to learn more about her …

Todoh: yet, why did she threaten you?

Kioshi: because I kept avoiding her … she comes up with different stories in her head about what you might be scheming against us … not that I believe her or anything … it's just easier to go along with her, and when you've proven her wrong, I just point it out and leave

Todoh: you're aware that she installed 6 cameras? … 2 in her bedroom, which is a very private place, mind you!

Kioshi looked at Todoh and said: I didn't know how many she installed exactly, and honestly, I don't remember if I ever saw the bedroom … I apologize on her behalf for installing those cameras and invading your privacy … and I'm sorry for watching them … I really am!

Anna looked down and seemed a little guilty

Saena looked at Anna and thought (why does she seem guilty … she's the one who tried to warn me about it?)

Anna suddenly broke her silence saying: even if you didn't see the bedroom … it completely wrong to watch it anyway… you never know what you could have seen!

Curious, Todoh asked: have you watched it, Anna-san?

Kioshi: I really didn't have anything to do with installing the cameras! … I wasn't ok with it, to begin with … I was really not interested in watching it either … I was forced!

Anna: That's no excuse! … in the end, we did watch it, and we deserve to be punished

Kioshi looked at Saena and asked: how am I digging my own grave though … you're not even pressing any charges, are you?!

Saena: No, I'm not … I'll let the police handle that … I won't involve myself in this, because if I do anything, she will just retaliate … moreover, I would prefer you return back to your homeland … if I press charges, your mother at least might be jailed, and that might mean you and your family will remain here longer … I would rather avoid that, at least for Kyoko's sake

Kioshi frowned and asked: I always tried to make sure I know where she is, and since that meeting, she hasn't left the hotel much!

Becoming hostile, Todoh glared at Kioshi and said: Tried, huh? … I assure you that you failed to watch her properly … she came to our office once more and tried to make a scene, mind you!

Confused, Kioshi asked: When?!

Saena: Shortly after you received Kyoko's decision, I believe it was Monday morning … she came to our office accusing me of brainwashing my child … she made quite a mess throwing those eggs that ended up hurting Todoh-san instead!

Kioshi looked closely at Todoh and noticed that he did have minor cuts that were nearly healing … personally he didn't care what happens to Todoh-san, but the fact his mother was assaulting another lawyer and making a scene annoyed him

Anna felt really bad for Saena and Todoh for having to go through that

Kioshi realized something, and asked: instead?!

Todoh: She came to throw the eggs at Mogami! … but I wouldn't have allowed that … I wouldn't trust that woman to come near Mogami, especially since she assaulted her after our meeting

Hearing that hit a nerve in Kioshi, … it seemed to him like Todoh was bragging he did something heroic while making his mother look like the worst villain

Saena: She hasn't come again, since she was warned not to! … I hope you can do a better job at keeping her away, because the next time she comes at, I won't hesitate to press charges … as we endured more than enough!

Kioshi: I'll keep that in mind … however … may I ask you something?!

Saena: about?

Kioshi: About her … our … no, your daughter … you left her and came to Tokyo alone, correct?

A crack started to appear on Saena emotionless mask as she frowned, she stared at Kioshi and knitted her eyebrows showing great displeasure and resentment towards Kioshi … the air around her seemed to turn dark … as negative feelings started seeping in large volumes

Todoh noticed that Saena's emotionless mask was beginning to crack and thought (I can't allow her to crack like this … sorry, but I can't keep quiet much longer, Mogami)

Kioshi felt attacked by the expression Saena was giving him … she never frowned that way towards him before … and he felt like that frown was stabbing him with a huge amount of negative emotions … it was actually painful for him to see that

When she knitted her eyebrows sharply, she sent a silent message saying (what do you know?! … you have no right to ask me about those matters, ever! …back the hell off!) … Kioshi was hit with the surge of emotions making him self-doubt his position … alarmed, he finally realized that his words hit a nerve and he couldn't back out from what he just put himself into

To add insult injury, Todoh smiled sarcastically while looking at Kioshi who seemed taken aback seeing Saena expression

Kioshi swallowed nervously, not knowing how he should respond anymore

Anna realized that her husband just opened a very private subject … she felt like he couldn't be stupider preying into her life choices like that … she didn't understand Saena frown, but she could tell that Saena was extremely displeased with his insensitive questions

Breaking the silence Todoh chuckled slyly, then he sarcastically said: I don't know what planet you come from, but I find your question very senseless and foolish! … what did you think would happen exactly?! … what were you expecting?!

Hearing Todoh's chuckle brought Saena back to her senses … she quickly recovered with her doll-like expression and listened to what Todoh was saying … wondering (where is he going with this? … do I stop him?!)

Becoming more hostile, Todoh continued: Really! … what the hell were you expecting?! … was she supposed to stay home and raise the child on her own?! … how was she going to provide for the child?! … do you have any idea how hard it is to raise a child on your own in Japan?! … if you don't then I can easily break it down for you!

Kioshi looked at Todoh but didn't say a word

Anna remembered that Todoh had told her that he knew Saena for around 20 years, so he must have witnessed what happened with Saena … coupled with his career, he's probably very knowledgeable in that area even without mentioning Saena's exact circumstances

Not getting an answer, Todoh decided to do so anyway and said: where do I start?!, … you know that Mogami-san was a junior back then, correct? … do you even know how much money a junior makes? … not to mention the effects of your actions, the least she might face is a wage cut, … that will result in her receiving less money, wouldn't it?! … moreover, she has so many other bills to pay, such as rent, health insurance, and taxes … add to that the increase of expenses for the pregnancy!

The ranting prolonged: was she supposed to give up her dream of becoming a great lawyer to care for her child?! … moreover … she was living off a single income, … which would require her to work extra hours to provide for herself and her child! … do you know how expensive it is to have a child anyway? … I don't know about the US, but I know enough to say that having a child with only a single income would be extremely difficult! … children have different needs, and therefore expenses might increase depending on those needs, won't they?! … you have three, so you must know that!

Annoyed, Kioshi just said: I'm aware …

Todoh: sure, your well off because of your background, and I'm sure you got paid well for that evil scheme you executed!

Kioshi felt like he was smothered with all the facts Todoh was throwing at him … and wanted it to end, but unfortunately for him … Todoh had much more to say

Todoh continued: Don't even get me started on support! … Normally, a pregnant woman is supported by her partner and her family! … however, in Mogami's case, you left without a trace, and I'm sure you're aware that she had no family since both her parents passed on long before you came along! … I'm sure also sure you know how much support is needed since you yourself have 3 kids of your own … I don't know what kind of husband you were, but I'm sure if your wife didn't have your support with her first pregnancy, she wouldn't have had 2 more kids, would she?!

Kioshi looked down in shame admitting that he didn't think of any of that … and was only concerned about Kyoko being alone without understanding the full picture

Anna was also baffled by the amount of ranting Todoh did … she didn't think about all those things too much, therefore, she didn't understand how much suffering Saena went through

However, Todoh wasn't done just yet, as he continued: considering the amount of emotional damage you caused her, I can assure you it was not a fun situation to be in, mind you! … lastly … do you perhaps think it's easy for someone to be a single mother?!

Annoyed, Kioshi glared at Todoh, as he thought (he's still going?!)

Although not a single mother herself, Anna was aware of some of the difficulty's single women face in society … but her knowledge was based on her friend's experience in the US … she wasn't aware they were too different to compared to the experience women face in Japan

Todoh glared back at Kioshi and said: I don't know what kind of experience a single mother would have in the US … but here in Asia, and especially Japan, being a single mother is extremely frowned upon! … even if someone was married and had a child … once a woman becomes a single mother, their life changes negatively … there is a huge sense of shame associated with being a single mother in the Japanese culture, regardless of previous marital status

Kioshi was a little surprised by that fact … although he was Japanese, he didn't pay too much to the culture since he adapted well in the US, … he knew that single mothers face harder situations, but he didn't know how difficult it is for women in Japan

Todoh: I believe that I asked you how you found out that Mogami was Kyoko-chan mother, and your mother was annoyed by the question, asking if it was a secret … sure … it wasn't really secret, but frankly … single mothers don't usually disclose they are in fact a single mother to even their friends and extended family, let alone the general public … especially if they have a child out of wedlock! … so yes, she wasn't a secret, but Mogami wouldn't have told anyone about Kyoko unless she absolutely had to

Kioshi: Even friends and extended family? … why? … besides, aren't you just a friend, why do you know about her then?!

Anna put her arm under the table and pinched her husband, annoyed at his foolish question

Todoh: I knew Mogami for a long time, as a coworker and friend … since we worked together, I saw her often, and sure it might be easy to hide the fact your pregnant in the first few months, but eventually it would be impossible! … I'm sure you know what pregnancy is like, or do I have to spill that to you too?!

Kioshi: No thanks, I'm knowledgeable enough!

Todoh: luckily for Mogami, our boss was already aware of her situation, since he also witnessed it first hand, … but if that wasn't the case, then it would have been difficult for Mogami to find a job if she disclosed that had a child since its usually considered high-risk to hire a single mother, … besides … Women don't even have equal pay, as males on average earn over 20% more than females … so given everything you just heard, I will dare you to once again ask your utterly senseless question again!

Taken back, Kioshi felt cornered and frustrated … Todoh was very clear, yet harsh, although he didn't use any colorful language … he was sure that Todoh wanted to curse him, but even though he didn't, many of the things he implied did come across as Todoh was belittling him

After the rant was over, Saena felt relieved… Todoh didn't reveal too much and everything he said was true … she was very grateful to him, and thought silently (I need to pay him back for everything he's done for me so far … but how?)

Her expression softened a bit while she was thanking Todoh mentally, giving Kioshi a bigger inkling that something was changing between Saena and Todoh … and he didn't like that at all

Todoh however started talking again, saying: Sure, you might think Kyoko living on her own in Kyoto is a terrible thing, but she was never alone, … and … it was the best decision for both of them … so instead of judging them, think first!

Finally speaking up, Saena added: besides, I never once claimed to be a good mother, but I had to survive somehow! … regardless, Kyoko is my child … I might disagree with some of her decisions, but, I think she turned out to be a great person, and I wouldn't change a thing about that!

A phone started ringing, and Saena noticed it was hers, so she got up and excused herself to answer the call

Anna excused herself as well, as she wanted to go to the restroom, leaving her husband and Todoh alone

A long few minutes of silence took over the atmosphere, as the café worker came back with their orders … he places the orders down along with a plate of chocolates, then walked away as soon as he could, as he didn't want to end up in the middle of what was going on between the two men who glared at each other silently

Breaking his silence, Kioshi asked: what are you aiming for, doing all this?!

Todoh smirked without answering

Kioshi: I can tell that you have a hidden motive behind all this support!

Todoh raised an eyebrow at that statement and chuckled, then slyly answered: I'm not the one with rotten motives, mind you … I'm here as a supportive friend, … think all you want, not that your opinion matters anyway … at least you're finally using that brain of yours, maybe you should've used it sooner, you might've avoided that lecture I just gave … it's quite embarrassing to be you, honestly!

Kioshi: are you gasping for straws right now?! … I can tell your trying to justify your actions as a supportive friend, but she means much more to you than you would admit!

Todoh: I never tried to hide my feelings … and frankly, I really don't have to be upfront with you about them … especially not you!

Kioshi: She seems blissfully oblivious to them, though

Nonchalant, Todoh, asks: your point is?!

Kioshi: you're unable to get her to recognize your feelings!

Todoh scoffed, then said: I don't see your point! … are you perhaps proud of the things you've done to hurt her?!

Kioshi: Listen! … I already apologized, ok?! … I'm not proud! … my eldest son isn't even talking to me anymore! … how can I be proud of that, when my own son is angry with me?!

Sarcastic, Todoh said: ah?! … so, that's what's bothering you, huh?! … that's sad, really! … I thought you would regret your actions for what they are, and not only because your son is upset …your shameless, really!

Kioshi: go ahead and swear as you want, no one is stopping you! … show your true colors!

Todoh: I'm not sure why you think I would stoop to your mothers' level, … I'm not interested in copying anyone … I like myself for who I am, no matter how anyone views me!

Kioshi: Do you think you're better than her when you're attacking me this much?!

Todoh: sure, I do! … at least I'm being direct and honest … I'm not making things up!

Kioshi: if you think you're being clever, I assure you, you're not! … you're just salty that you can't have the women you want when ….

Todoh picked up his mug and slammed it down loudly attracting the attention of many people around them, including Saena, who wanted to end the call and return before things get out of hand

Todoh interrupting Kioshi, saying: are you trying to brag?! … I'm sure neither Mogami nor even your wife would like to hear what your we're about to say!

Kioshi: what do you know … stop talking about my wife as if you know her or something!

Todoh: I met her enough time to form an accurate opinion … she's a righteous, and an honest woman, thats how I view her … sadly, she stuck with someone like you, dishonest, deceitful and senseless!

Kioshi: You! (he got up and approached Todoh) … he then said while pointing a finger at Todoh: watch it!

Todoh slanted in his seat, crossed his legs, and sported an amused look on his face, asking: you watched it … you'd rather stay out of trouble with me because if you touch me, I won't hesitate to press charges! … I'm not Mogami, after all!

Kioshi grit teeth trying to hold himself from doing something dangerous

Todoh leaned over the table, picked up a piece of chocolate, and ate it as if he's not fazed by Kioshi at all … he smiled as he threw the chocolate wrapper next to his coffee mug

Kioshi took a deep breath and return to his seat … then said: you're a jerk!

Todoh made a facial expression that made it look like that comment didn't affect him at all

Kioshi: I don't want the likes of you near my child!

Todoh: don't worry, I'm not interested in forming a friendly relationship with your sons!

Kioshi: I was talking about …

Todoh interrupted: you have no choice there … whether you like it or not, we're already close and nothing will change that! … I'm also her lawyer, so even if we don't meet as her mother's friend, I'll meet her as part of my job!

Kioshi: you can simply ask someone to do that job … or do you think that you're the only one who can do this job!

Kioshi stared daggers at Todoh, then said: you think you're some sly dog, doing this?!

Todoh: I could care less what you think!

Kioshi wanted to say something … but he noticed that Saena was walking back to the table, so he held his tongue

Saena sat down and put her phone back in her bag …. While Todoh took out his phone and checked something then put it away

Todoh came closer to Saena and he whispered something, which left her a little concerned, but when he whispered another thing … she nodded with a relieved expression

Anna joined them shortly after and all four sat silently for about a minute or two, … some of them took sips, while others glared at one another

Kioshi: so, …

Saena put down her green tea and looked at Kioshi waiting for him to say what he wanted to say

Kioshi: is that all?

Saena: not really … there is another topic I wanted to bring up!

Kioshi: Go ahead

Reaching her bag, she took out a file, placing it on the table … she gently pushed it towards the couple in front of her and said: here!

Kioshi: what is this?

Saena: That's Kyoko's genetic report, we received it yesterday

Kioshi: I don't remember asking for a DNA test, your statement is enough … besides, I didn't even provide a sample!

Saena: this isn't a paternity test … I said it's a genetic test, concerning Kyoko's health!

Kioshi: why are you giving it to me? … I thought that she didn't want me involved in her life, … so I'm a little lost, what's the meaning of this?!

Todoh nodded to her and kept a calm expression … not wanting to interfere in this matter at all

Although Kioshi felt grateful to be notified about this, he didn't like the fact Todoh was hearing it too … and wasn't sure why she was even telling them about this, given what he did

Saena looked at Anna and awkwardly answered: well … apparently … this is an anomaly that results in many miscarriages … specifically females are affected by it … I was told that Kyoko must have been very lucky to have all the odds on her side, … since she was born on time, and was completely healthy

Kioshi was shell-shocked by the news he just heard … he thought to himself (so the problem was me? … is this some kind of punishment for my actions?!)

Saena: sure, it's rare for females to live with such anomaly, but most live a full healthy life, as long as they don't need any of the medication on the list … besides, most of them have alternatives … Kyoko isn't the only one living with it, so it's possible to survive even if this anomaly is passed down to your children

Puzzled, Anna: I see … so it only affects females?

Saena: as far as I was told, your sons may or may not be carriers … therefore it's best to test them to know for sure … hopefully the report will answer any further questions … if not, the doctor can!

Anna: Alright, thank you for letting us know

Getting back to reality, Kioshi sighed deeply, then asked: why?!

Saena: I don't know if I can answer that!

Kioshi: No … I mean why are you telling us this … shouldn't you hate me and keep me in the dark about it! … or is this your way of punishing me?

Saena: punishing you?! … no thanks I'm not interested in that … it's true that hate you, but I'm not heartless … besides, your wife and kids didn't do me any wrong, therefore, they have the right to know … so take it or leave it! … it's up to you!

Anna took the file and said: thank you for informing us, really!

Kioshi looked at Todoh and asked resentfully: with all due respect, why did you have to bring him along? … I would have preferred if he didn't hear the last part!

Saena: He's already aware! … besides, I wouldn't have come to meet you on my own, because I don't trust you at all! … I prefer to have him by my side as a supportive friend, … which he most definitely is!

Kioshi thought to himself (supportive friend, huh? … I'm really beginning to think it's more than just that)

Saena: That's all I needed to say … if you don't mind, I'm going to take my leave! … (she stood up, and picked up her bag)

Anna stood and bowed

Todoh stood up and bowed with Saena …

Kioshi also stood up and bowed slightly

Saena walked away, but then said: Anna-san … may I have a moment?!

Although Surprised, Anna agreed: Yes, sure … she followed Saena outside for a short while

Todoh smirked as he stood waiting for Saena to finish her chat with Anna, and once he saw Anna returning, he walked away without bedding Kioshi goodbye … he bowed his head to Anna as he passed her … and he joined Saena outside

Kioshi: What did she want from you?!

Anna: nothing important … (she sat down to finish her herbal tea)

Kioshi: We should head back as well

Anna: No, take a seat! … we need to talk!

Nervous, Kioshi asked: about?

Hi everyone … I'm back … I honestly struggled for the past few weeks to sit down and write … I was stuck on some parts, because I know what I want to write, but not how to write it … so it took some time to figure things out … sometime I'm a perfectionist, and its messes with me!

Is Kioshi ever going to behave properly and how is he going to respond to the news he passed an anomaly to Kyoko and maybe also his boys … what is Kyoko planning for the rest of the day and how is Kanae going to react to the news that Ren met Remi first … stay tuned~!
