Author's Note: Ta-da! Another chapter! Quite an important chapter as it is the big revelation about Cat. I wrote this chapter (along with many chapters) about six months ago. But now, I have time to post it! I really want to finish this story but just been busy with writing papers in Japanese, making presentations, studying, working, and etc. Hopefully, I finish this story this next year! I am sorry for my regular readers, including my beloved reviewers xpetti4 Bemer and Msolsun, for waiting patiently for a new chapter! Sorry for the long wait!
Enjoy! :D
Last time on "Indomitable Hope"
The black-haired ADA took a glance at Catherine's peaceful face and then turn his eyes back at the man in front of him.
Once Gabe figured it out, he started his deduction off with ease. "Wait a minute. Before you go, I have one last question. You and Catherine kind of looked like each other. Are you related to her?"
"It's none of your damn business Lowen," the older man spoke in agitation.
"It is my damn business," Gabe retaliated back, staring madly at the other male. "Katherine is my damn business. Now, answer my question: Are you or are you not Catherine's real relative? Could you possibly that bastard of a father of her?"
That was it! Gabe's words severely irritated the other man to the point that Reynolds slugged a fast one into Gabe's upper right cheek. The force caused the black-haired ADA to stumble back a bit as he tended his bruised and pained cheek. A bit of blood was coming out from his nose.
"What is going on?" a murmur came behind the two men. Gabe looked up to see that the voice was coming from Catherine who was waking from her slumber.
"Catherine!" the younger male shouted as he ran towards her. "How are you feeling?"
"I am doing much better," she said as she opened her eyes slowly. "I had the strangest dream through. It dealt with Vincent…" She paused, looking at the two men in the room. She wasn't familiar with the older one. "Gabe, who is this guy?"
Gabe gazed at Catherine for a bit before turning his attention to the other man. The ADA finally answered, "Great question, Catherine. I was wondering the same thing. Catherine, I think he might be your long-lost dad. Doesn't he look a lot like you?"
Catherine gasped at Gabe's accusation. She moved her attention from the younger male to the older one as she closely studied each of his features. They had different color eyes. And, she was unsure if they had similar hair color as the man's hair graying. However, upon a further look, Katherine noticed that they shared similar facial features like their noses and the width of their foreheads.
"Who are you?" the brunette finally whispered after her impromptu investigation.
Gabe continued to eye the man in question, hoping he will spend spill the truth. Taking the hint, Agent Reynolds took a deep breath and headed towards the chair next to Catherine's bed.
He focused his attention on the woman with regret in his eyes. "Catherine, ADA Lowen's presumptions are true I, Roberts Reynolds, am your father. You probably haven't heard of me before?" Catherine nodded her head silently in a"no" gesture as a response.
The older man smiled to himself at the honest yet silent response. "Of course not. I wouldn't doubt that your mother didn't tell you anything about me. Besides, Thomas Chandler did a good job being the male father figure in your life." Reynolds gave a sad smile at that thought. He continued to briefly think the "could have" moments of being in his daughter's life.
"You probably want to know how your mom and I met. As you know, your mother and I were both employed by Muirfield to work in Afghanistan for some time. One thing led to another. However, your mom and I parted ways after our duties overseas ended. One day, I got a letter from your mother that told me that she gave birth to a daughter. Our daughter.
After your birth, I promised to your mother that I would have limited contact with you. We agreed it was for the best to have you think that Thomas Chandler was your actual dad.
Although we drifted apart after we left Muirfield, I still kept tabs on you and your mother over the years. It was very painful to hear the news of your mother's death by the hands of Muirfield.
You are wondering why I have shown up after all these years. When I heard that you were attacked by Muirfield agents and then that beast-like creature…" Reynolds took a pause to glance for a short time at ADA Lowen behind him. Then he continued as shifted his attention back to Catherine. "You were attacked yesterday and it's my fault. I want to apologize for that and make it up to you by protecting you from now on. Maybe someday, you could trust me completely as well."
Cat looked at him with confusion as she tried to digest the information. Her whole world was turned literally upside down by his confession. She didn't know who he was completely and if she was ready to really trust him. What more was that she was seriously confused at his promise of protection. What was he going to protect her from?
Seeing that his daughter was having a tough time with the revelation, Reynolds spoke up. "I'm sorry to cause you trouble. I will give you some time to digest the information and let you think about what I said. I'm going to leave my cell phone number with you for when you want to talk. I'm available at any time.
The gray-haired man quickly took out a business card and jolted down his cell phone number on the back. He then placed it on the small table nearby Cat's bed. Reynolds took one last glance at his daughter sadly before walking away.
Hearing the stunning revelation and witnessing the scene before him, Gabe didn't believe what just happened. Yet, what really got to him was the unusual promise from Reynolds himself. It sounded a little too fishy.
The ADA ran out the door and into the deserted hallways to catch up with the ex-Muirfield agent. It didn't take him long to catch up with the agent.
Gabe wasted no time getting down to the issue.
"You better start telling the goddamn truth. You know something about what happened to Vincent. It was your organization who kidnapped Vincent, wasn't it? You better spill the beans or I can have you arrested."
Reynolds faced Lowen with a wicked grin on his face. "You can't do that because I don't really know where he is at the moment. It seems that he is your problem now."
