Ichabod is briefing his secretary on the wedding when he receives a phone call.
"Miss Gilbert, what a pleasant surprise. I was just in the middle of speaking with my secretary. How is everything faring?"
"Good," she says. "Except the bride is freaking out. I don't know how to calm her down, and she's only requesting to see you. How soon can you get here?"
Ichabod had called Miss Gilbert two days before the ceremony to tell he wouldn't be in attendance. He said he had another client to begin working with and would send his secretary.
"I will arrive in roughly 20 minutes."
"Great. See you in a bit. You remember where the changing room is, right?"
"Yes."
"Okay. Thank you so much, Ichabod."
"My pleasure, Miss Gilbert."
She hangs up, and Ichabod grabs his keys and coat.
"Well, Josh, it appears as though you're off the hook."
"Good. Weddings are not my thing. I just schedule the appointments. Go get her."
"Pardon me?"
"I hear what goes on in your office. These walls are pretty thin, and I can pick up on tone pretty well. You like her."
"You stand corrected. However, she is getting married and not in the best moods as of now. I'm simply going to calm her nerves and be of comfort."
"If you say so," Josh says. "Happy planning."
"Thank you."
He hurries out the door.
When Ichabod arrives at Fredrick's Manor, he's met with Miss Gilbert.
"You're right on time," she says. "Go do your magic."
He rushes upstairs to the bride's quarters and knocks at the door.
One of the bridesmaids opens it. She resembles Abbie.
"May I intrude for a brief moment?" he says.
"You're the wedding planner? You must be good at what you do. None of us could calm her down. I'm Jenny, by the way. The bride's sister."
"Very pleased to meet you."
"Same. I'll round up all the others."
She does so and asks them to leave the room for a bit. They hurry outside. In the doorframe, she says, "Knock yourself out."
The door closes behind him. Abbie's sitting in the chair, in her gown, with her head in her hands.
"It's bad luck to see the bride before her wedding. As the wedding planner, you should know that." Abbie sniffles, wipes her eyes.
Ichabod chuckles. "I am the exception to that rule, you know? Plus, you requested my assistance. Thus, I'm here. What seems to be the matter, Miss Mills?" He clasps his hands behind his back and walks toward her chair.
"I can't do this. Marry Calvin. I can't."
"Miss Mills, are you—?"
"I'm sure about this, Crane."
"What made you decide this?"
"I'm in love with you. And I can't get married knowing this, knowing I'm not being honest with myself and with Calvin. I mean he's been great since he came back. He's been attentive and acting how I want him to, but he's not you. The time we've spent together planning this wedding has been really fun for me. You're charming and gentle and sincere. I just find myself drawn to you. I can't really explain why."
He's beyond flattered and desperately wants to wrap her in his arms but wants to make certain she is sure about what she's saying. He has seen brides call off the wedding due to a worse case of nerves, only to have them recant and go forth with the ceremony.
"Are you positive, Abbie? This can't be undone."
She gets out of her chair and kisses him. "I mean it. I'll be back. I'm going to talk to Calvin."
Ichabod is overjoyed and utterly panicked. What will Mr. Riggs say? How will they explain this to Miss Gilbert and her staff, who have worked so hard? Most importantly, what will they say to their family and guests? He's also witnessed his fair share of weddings that are called off, and guests are left perplexed and/or upset for their time, money, and energy being wasted, especially if they helped the bride and groom prepare the ceremony.
When Abbie returns, she closes the door and slowly walks up to him.
"Well?" he asks.
"I told him everything that's happened. He's really hurt and upset. Embarrassed. I feel bad about doing this to him, but he said he loves me enough to let me go."
"It is unfortunate that his heart is broken. I never wanted to be the cause of the ending of a marriage before it's started, even for my own happiness."
"Same." She steps closer to him. "But our hearts want what they want."
"Indeed."
"What about the wedding party, the guests, and the staff?"
"We'll tell our party together, and then break the news to Lena and her staff. We'll make the announcement to the guests when they arrive."
He nods. "I'm sure Miss Gilbert will be able to make accommodations for the guests, since there will be no ceremony."
"I hope so. His family isn't gonna be happy about this. They'll be upset with me, especially his mom."
"You've made a choice that makes you happy. No one has the right to make you feel bad about that."
"Damn straight. Everything will be okay. Just have to get through this."
"In the meantime, I shall excuse myself."
"Okay. Meet me at the park?"
"Of course."
"I'll text when I'm on the way."
"I shall look forward to it." He kisses her cheek and leaves.
Before he goes downstairs, he knocks on the groom's door. Mr. Riggs opens it.
"Hello, Calvin."
"Look, I'm really not in the mood to see you right now."
"I know, and it's quite understandable. However, I couldn't leave without at least speaking to you about the situation that's transpired. I did ruin your wedding and acted inappropriately with Abbie while you were working. I would like to apologize for the outcome of your wedding. It is much as my fault as it is hers. I was the wedding planner and should have acted accordingly, perhaps even recommended another planner when I knew my feelings from the very start."
"It wouldn't have mattered much if you referred us to someone else. She still wouldn't have gotten over you. I know I have my part to play in this. I'm responsible, too, for leaving her like I did, but I am hurt. And I kind of want to punch your lights out. But… I appreciate you having the balls to come over here. Most men wouldn't do that. At least I know you have integrity."
"You are a good man, Mr. Riggs. Do not doubt that."
"I wasn't enough though. Not compared to you. I mean, I saw the photos. I saw how you two looked at each other while dancing. I had an inkling, even though I still wanted to believe nothing was going on. It's gonna take me a minute to get over this. All I ask is that you take care of her. Make her happy. Can you do that?"
"You have my word."
"Alright."
"Good-bye, Mr. Riggs."
"Bye, Ichabod." He shuts the door.
Ichabod waits at the park for Abbie. When she finally arrives, she runs into his arms and kisses him so. She is finally his, and he is finally hers.
